Abstract:Rapid determination of biomass feedstock properties is of value for the production of biomass densification briquetting fuel with high quality. In the present study, visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy was employed to build prediction models of componential contents, i.e. moisture, ash, volatile matter and fixed-carbon, and calorific value of three selected species of agricultural biomass feedstock, i.e. pine wood, cedar wood, and cotton stalk. The partial least squares (PLS) cross validation results showed that compared with original reflection spectra, PLS regression models developed for first derivative spectra produced higher prediction accuracy with coefficients of determination (R-2) of 0.97, 0.94 and 0.90, and residual prediction deviation (RPD) of 6.57, 4.00 and 3.01 for ash, volatile matter and moisture, respectively. Good prediction accuracy was achieved with R-2 of 0.85 and RPD of 2.55 for fixed carbon, and R-2 of 0.87 and RPD of 2.73 for calorific value. It is concluded that the Vis-NIR spectroscopy is promising as an alternative of traditional proximate analysis for rapid determination of componential contents and calorific value of agricultural biomass feedstock.

Abstract:The possibility of using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) for quantitative determination of available energy (calculated digestible energy and metabolizable energy for swine) and essential amino acids in corn DDGS was investigated in this study. Ninety-three samples were collected from 18 plants in China over a three year period and randomly split into a calibration set (N=70) and a validation set (N=23). Calibrations were performed by modified partial least squared algorithm and 15 different spectral pretreatments. The results showed that the second derivative mathematical treatment gave the best prediction performance for most constituents. The coefficient of determination for cross-validation (RCV2) and validation (Rval2) were excellent for available energy (RCV2 ranged from 0.93 to 0.94, Rval2 ranged from 0.88 to 0.91) and most essential amino acids (RCV2 ranged from 0.85 to 0.93, Rval2 ranged from 0.88 to 0.95) with the exception of arginine, lysine, tryptophan and valine. The prediction performance measuring amino acids by NIRS was better than that obtained by protein regression. These results indicate that NIRS can be used as a quantitative method for the rapid determination of energy and most amino acids in corn DDGS.
Rapid Determination of the Content of Digestible Energy and Metabolizable Energy in Sorghum Fed to Growing Pigs by Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy1

Abstract:The object of this study was to establish a new method to predict the content of DE and ME in sorghum fed to growing pigs by using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). A total of 33 sorghum samples from all over China were used in this study. The samples were scanned for their spectra in the range of 12,000 to 4,000 cm-1. Based on principal components analysis of the spectra, the samples were split into a calibration set (n = 24) and a validation set (n = 9) according to the ratio of 3:1. With animal experiment values as calibration reference, the calibration models of DE and ME were established using partial least squares regression algorithm. Different spectral pretreatments were applied on the spectra to reduce the noise level. The best wavenumber ranges were also investigated. Results showed that DE and ME content in sorghum fed to growing pigs ranged from 14.57 to 16.70 MJ/kg DM and 14.31 to 16.35 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The optimal spectral preprocessing method for DE and ME was the combination of first derivative and multiplicative scatter correction. The most informative near-infrared spectral regions were 9,403.9 to 6,094.4 cm ' and 4,605.5 to 4,242.9 cm ' for both DE and ME. The best performance for DE and ME calibration models was the coefficient of determination of calibration (R2c) of 0.94 and 0.93, coefficient of determination of cross-external validation (R2cv) of 0.88 and 0.86, residual predictive deviation of cross-external validation (RPDcv) of 2.86 and 2.64, coefficient of determination of external validation (R2v) of 0.90 and 0.81, and residual predictive deviation of external validation (RPDv) of 3.15 and 2.35, respectively. There were no significant differences between the measured and NIRS predicted values for DE and ME (P = 0.895 for DE and P = 0.644 for ME). As the number of calibration samples increased from 24 to 33, the calibration performance of DE and ME models was improved, indicated by increased R2c, R2cv, and RPDcv values. In conclusion, NIRS quantitative models of the available energy in sorghum were established in this study. The results demonstrated that the content of DE and ME in sorghum could be predicted with relatively high accuracy based on NIRS and NIRS showed the superiority of speediness and practicality when compared with previous research methods including animal experiments, regression equations, and computer-controlled simulated digestion system.

Abstract:An equation for digestible energy (DE) of corn grain fed to pigs has been established based on chemical composition or near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy in our laboratory. And an in vitro digestibility technique to predict the DE value of feed ingredients is also applicable in practice. This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro digestible energy (IVDE) and digestibility of gross energy (GE) in 13 selected samples of corn grain with a wide range in nutrient profiles using a computer-controlled simulated digestion system (CCSDS) and to generate prediction equations based on IVDE and IVDE/GE values for previously determined DE and digestibility of GE (DE/GE). Among the 13 samples, starch, DE and DE/GE content (dry matter basis) ranged from 603 to 662 g/kg, 3843 to 4068 kcal/kg, and 0.89 to 0.94, respectively. The IVDE (3440-3637 kcal/kg) or IVDE/GE (0.80-0.84) showed a similar variation tendency with the DE or DE/GE value in the corn grains. There were highly positive correlations between IVDE and determined DE (r = 0.99, P < 0.01) and between IVDE/GE and determined DE/GE (r = 0.98, P < 0.01). Linear relationships were observed in the 13 corn samples: DE = L14 x IVDE 89.56 (R-2 = 0.97, P < 0.01) and DE/GE = 1.12 x IVDE/GE 0.18 (R-2 = 0.97, P < 0.01). All samples showed the differences of less than 25 kcal/kg between observed and predicted DE and less than 0.005 between observed and predicted DE/GE. The slopes and R-2 for the linear relationship between observed and predicted values were both 1 and 0.97. Overall, CCSDS is a promising in vitro digestibility technique to predict DE and digestibility of GE in corn gain for pigs.
Determination of the Energy Value of Corn Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles Containing Different Oil Levels when Fed to Growing Pigs

Abstract:This experiment used indirect calorimetry to determine the net energy (NE) content of five corn distillers dried grains with solubles (corn DDGS) containing different oil levels and to compare the NE obtained using indirect calorimetry with that calculated using previously published prediction equations. There were two samples of high-oil DDGS, one sample of medium-oil DDGS and two samples of low-oil DDGS. Twelve barrows (initial BW of 32.8 ± 2.0 kg) were used in a repeated 3 × 6 Youden square design with three periods and six diets. The diets were comprised of a corn-soybean meal basal diet and five diets containing 29.25% of one of the corn DDGS added at the expense of corn and soybean meal. During each period, the pigs were individually housed in metabolism crates for 16 days which included 7 days for adaption to feed and environmental conditions. On day 8, the pigs were transferred to respiration chambers and fed one of the six diets at 2300 kJ ME/kg BW0.6 /day. Faeces and urine were collected from day 9 to 13 and heat production (HP) was also measured. From day 14 to 15, the pigs were fed 893 kJ ME/kg BW0.6 /day to allow them to adapt from the fed to the fasted state. On the last day of each period (day 16), the pigs were fasted and fasting HP was measured. The digestible energy value was 16.0, 17.1 and 15.3 MJ/kg DM, the metabolizable energy value was 14.6, 15.5 and 13.7 MJ/kg DM and the NE value was 10.7, 11.0 and 9.4 MJ/kg DM, for the high-oil, medium-oil and low-oil corn DDGS, respectively. The NE obtained with indirect calorimetry in the present study did not differ from values calculated using previously published prediction equations.

Abstract:Background The nutrient composition of corn is variable. To prevent unforeseen reductions in growth performance, grading and analytical methods are used to minimize nutrient variability between calculated and analyzed values. This experiment was carried out to define the sources of variation in the energy content of corn and to develop a practical method to accurately estimate the digestible energy (DE) and metabolisable energy (ME) content of individual corn samples for growing pigs. Twenty samples were taken from each of five provinces in China (Jilin, Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, and Henan) to obtain a range of quality. Results The DE and ME contents of the 100 corn samples were measured in 35.3 ± 1.92 kg growing pigs (six pigs per corn sample). Sixty corn samples were used to build the prediction model; the remaining forty samples were used to test the suitability of these models. The chemical composition of each corn sample was determined, and the results were used to establish prediction equations for DE or ME content from chemical characteristics. The mean DE and ME content of the 100 samples were 4,053 and 3,923 kcal/kg (dry matter basis), respectively. The physical characteristics were determined, as well, and the results indicated that the bulk weight and 1,000-kernel weight were not associated with energy content. The DE and ME values could be accurately predicted from chemical characteristics. The best fit equations were as follows: DE, kcal/kg of DM = 1062.68 + (49.72 × EE) + (0.54 × GE) + (9.11 × starch), with R 2 = 0.62, residual standard deviation (RSD) = 48 kcal/kg, and P < 0.01; ME, kcal/kg of dry matter basis (DM) = 671.54 + (0.89 × DE) – (5.57 × NDF) – (191.39 × ash), with R 2 = 0.87, RSD = 18 kcal/kg, and P < 0.01. Conclusion This experiment confirms the large variation in the energy content of corn, describes the factors that influence this variation, and presents equations based on chemical measurements that may be used to predict the DE and ME content of individual corn samples.

Abstract:Objective An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different diet formulations: F1 (Two complicated basal diets containing different crude protein levels plus tested feedstuff) vs F2 (A simple corn soybean meal [SBM] basal diet plus tested feedstuff) combined with total collection (TC) or chromic oxide (Cr2O3) marker or acid-insoluble ash (AIA) marker method, and freeze-dry or oven-dry (OD) technique on estimation of nutrient digestibility in diets fed to growing pigs. Methods In F1, twelve barrows were allocated to two 6×4 Youden Squares. The treatment diets included a high protein basal (HPB) diet, a low protein basal (LPB) diet, a corn diet and a wheat bran (WB) diet formulated based on the HPB diet, and a SBM diet and a rapeseed meal (RSM) diet formulated based on the LPB diet. In F2, eight barrows were allocated to two 4×4 Latin Squares. The treatment diets included a corn basal diet, a SBM basal diet formulated based on the corn diet, and a WB diet and a RSM diet formulated based on the SBM diet. Results Concentration of digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME), and the apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy, ash, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre determined by Cr2O3 marker method were greater than those determined by TC and AIA marker methods in HPB, LPB, and RSM diets formulated by F1 and in corn diet formulated by F2 (p<0.05). The DE values in WB and both DE and ME values in SBM and RSM estimated using F1 were greater than those estimated using F2 (p<0.05). Conclusion From the accuracy aspect, the AIA marker or TC method combined with OD technique is recommended for determining the energy concentration and nutrient digestibility of components in diets fed to growing pigs.

Abstract:The possibility of using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) for quantitative determination of 8 important nutrient compositions, including moisture, crude protein, ether extract, ash, total phosphorus, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and crude fiber in corn DDGS was investigated in the present study. Ninety-three samples were collected from 18 plants in China over a three years period. Calibrations were performed by modified partial least squared algorithm and 15 different derivatives plus scatter correction spectral pretreatments. The results showed that the second derivative mathematical treatment gave the best prediction performance for most constituents. The prediction performance of models developed using 93 calibration samples was better than that developed using 70 samples. The coefficients of determination for calibration (RSQcal), coefficients of determination for cross-validation (1-VR), and RPD(CV) of cross-validation in models developed using 93 samples were 0.94-0.99, 0.89-0.99, and 2.98-14.85, respectively. These results indicate that NIRS can be used as a quantitative method for rapid determination of nutrient composition in corn DDGS.
Determination of Nutrient Digestibility in Corn and Soybean Meal Using the Direct and Substitution Methods As Well As Different Basal Diets Fed to Growing Pigs

Abstract:Two experiments were conducted to compare methods of determination of the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of various chemical constituents in corn and soybean meal (CS) when fed to growing pigs. Expt. 1, eighteen barrows (34.3 +/- 1.1 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 3 diets. The three diets were Corn, CS-Basal, and CS-Test. The ATTD of DM, GE, CP, and organic matter (OM) in corn determined by the direct method were not different from those determined by the substitution method. Expt. 2, twenty-four barrows (36.2 +/- 1.4 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 diets. The four diets were Basal diet 1 (97.5% corn), Test diet 1(replaced corn in Basal diet 1 with 15% SBM), Basal diet 2 (72.5% corn and 25% SBM), and Test diet 2 (58% corn and 39.5% SBM). The ATTD of GE and CP of SBM were greater (p < 0.05) determined by the Corn-Basal diet method than Corn-SBM-Basal diet method. In summary, there was no difference in the ATTD of nutrients in corn when determined using direct or substitution method, but the ATTD of GE and CP in SBM determined using the Corn-Basal diet method were greater than using Corn-SBM-Basal diet method.
Methodologies on Estimating the Energy Requirements for Maintenance and Determining the Net Energy Contents of Feed Ingredients in Swine: a Review of Recent Work

Abstract:In the past two decades, a considerable amount of research has focused on the determination of the digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of feed ingredients fed to swine. Compared with the DE and ME systems, the net energy (NE) system is assumed to be the most accurate estimate of the energy actually available to the animal. However, published data pertaining to the measured NE content of ingredients fed to growing pigs are limited. Therefore, the Feed Data Group at the Ministry of Agricultural Feed Industry Centre (MAFIC) located at China Agricultural University has evaluated the NE content of many ingredients using indirect calorimetry. The present review summarizes the NE research works conducted at MAFIC and compares these results with those from other research groups on methodological aspect. These research projects mainly focus on estimating the energy requirements for maintenance and its impact on the determination, prediction, and validation of the NE content of several ingredients fed to swine. The estimation of maintenance energy is affected by methodology, growth stage, and previous feeding level. The fasting heat production method and the curvilinear regression method were used in MAFIC to estimate the NE requirement for maintenance. The NE contents of different feedstuffs were determined using indirect calorimetry through standard experimental procedure in MAFIC. Previously generated NE equations can also be used to predict NE in situations where calorimeters are not available. Although popular, the caloric efficiency is not a generally accepted method to validate the energy content of individual feedstuffs. In the future, more accurate and dynamic NE prediction equations aiming at specific ingredients should be established, and more practical validation approaches need to be developed.
Determination of Net Energy Content of Soybean Oil Fed to Growing Pigs Using Indirect Calorimetry

Abstract:The objectives of this experiment were: (i) to determine the net energy (NE) of soybean oil (SBO) fed to growing pigs using indirect calorimetry (IC); and (ii) to evaluate the effects of inclusion rate of SBO on heat production, oxidative status and nutrient digestibility in growing pigs. Eighteen growing barrows were allotted to three diets based on completely randomized design with six replicate pigs (period) per diet. Diets included a corn-soybean meal basal diet and two test diets containing 5% or 10% SBO at the expense of corn and soybean meal. During each period, pigs were individually housed in metabolism crates for 14 days, including 7 days to adapt to feed, metabolism crate and environmental conditions. On day 8, pigs were transferred to the open-circuit respiration chambers for measurement of daily O-2 consumption and CO2 and CH4 production. During this time, pigs were fed one of the three diets at 2.4 MJ metabolizable energy/kg body weight (BW)(0.6)/day. Total feces and urine were collected and daily total heat production (THP) was measured from days 9 to 13 and fasted on day 14 to evaluate their fasting heat production (FHP). The results show that trends of decreased apparent total tract digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (linear, P = 0.09) and acid detergent fiber (linear, P = 0.07) were observed as the content of dietary lipids increased. The average THP for the three diets were 1326, 1208 and 1193kJ/kg BW0.6/day, respectively. The FHP of pigs averaged 843 kJ/kg BW0.6/day and was not affected by diet characteristics. A reduction of the respiratory quotients in the fed state as the inclusion level of SBO increased was observed. In conclusion, the NE values of SBO we determined by indirect calorimetry were 33.45 and 34.05 MJ/kg dry matter under two inclusion levels. THP could be largely reduced when SBO is added in the feed, but the THP of SBO included at 5% in a corn-soybean meal diet is not different from the THP of SBO included at 10%.
Determination And Prediction Of The Digestible And Metabolisable Energy Content Of Barley For Growing Pigs Based On Chemical Composition

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to define the sources of variation determining the energy content of barley and to develop a practical method to predict the digestible energy (DE) and metabolisable energy (ME) content of individual barley samples. The 19 barley samples used in this study were diverse varieties grown in different regions. The feeding experiment used 57 barrows (initial body weight 31.5 +/- 3.2kg) and was conducted over two consecutive periods (n=6 per treatment) using a completely randomised design. During each period, the pigs were placed in metabolic crates for a 5-d total collection of faeces and urine following a 10-d adaptation to the diets. Among the barley samples, on dry matter (DM) basis the levels of neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre (ADF), crude protein and starch ranged from 16.1% to 38.9%, 3.9% to 9.6%, 10.1% to 16.8% and 43.5% to 57.9%, respectively. The mean determined DE and ME contents amounted to 14.7 and 14.4MJ/kg DM and varied among the samples by 1.85 MJ (13.6%) and 1.78 MJ (13.3%), respectively. The ADF fraction accounted for 73% and 76% of the total variation in the DE and ME content, respectively. It revealed that for prediction of the DE and ME contents in barley, equations had the best fit when the analysed contents of ADF, neutral detergent fibre and gross energy were used for calculation (R-2=0.92). On the basis of the developed equations, the DE and ME contents of barley of different origin can be predicted with an acceptable accuracy when used as feed for growing pigs.

Abstract:Capacity to routinely, accurately and cost-effectively measure variation in the nutritional quality of feed ingredients before diet formulation represents a fundamental pillar of sustainable pork production worldwide. Factors driving sustainable pork production include pork price, feed cost, utilisation of co-products and downgraded raw materials and variation in pork production, with all being related to the definition and ultimate nutritional quality of feed ingredients. The present paper defines rapid measures of nutritional quality in feed ingredients for pigs and demonstrates the range that can exist in these parameters, specifically digestible energy of cereal grains and the reactive-lysine concentration of oilseed meals. It provides an overview of the development of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations for key nutritional-quality parameters and how they are being applied by the pork industry. Adjunct ways to measure nutritional quality of feed ingredients for pigs such as the glucose-release index and how these can be used in conjunction with NIRS are reviewed. The paper reports advanced correlation analysis between chemical components and digestible-energy concentration of cereals, and how these could be used for screening of NIRS outliers, and discusses future opportunities for application of nutritional-quality analysis using NIRS calibrations, including feed intake and portable solutions. Using advanced NIRS calibrations for digestible energy in cereals and reactive lysine in oilseed meals, pork producers will ensure that they make best use of limited resources and, as a consequence, pork will remain a nutritionally accretive food source for increasingly discerning consumers worldwide.

Abstract:Two trials in vivo and in vitro were conducted, in vivo to determine the apparent digestibility of gross energy, crude protein, dry matter, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and apparent digestible energy in 10 corn by-products. In vivo the diets included one basal corn diet, four corn gluten meal diets, four corn distillers dried gains with solubles diets and two corn distillers dried grains diets using the different methods, 12 crossbred barrows weigh 40+/-1.6 kg were allocated into individual metabolic crate, according to a 6x6 Latin square design. In vitro using flask technique, filter bag technique and dialysis tubing technique, the digestibilities of gross energy, crude protein and dry matter in corn gluten meal and corn distillers dried grains with solubles were investigated. Pepsin, pancreatin, intestinal fluid, rumen fluid and cellulase were used in incubation. The results showed that correlation coefficient was 0.73 in corn distillers dried grains with solubles between the digestibility of crude protein and acid detergent fiber in vivo (p<0.01); and correlation coefficient was 0.68 in corn distillers dried grains with solubles between the digestibility of gross energy and neutral detergent fiber in vivo (p<0.01). Apparent digestible energy (DE) of corn by-products in pig total tract was predicted by the percentage of crude protein (CP) and the content of gross energy (GE) in feedstuff. The equation: DE=5,601.09+26.69xCP %-0.5904xGE, (R-2=0.72). lit vitro, filter bag technique was more convenient; furthermore, the digestibility for the treatments (pepsin+pancreatin+rumen fluid and pepsin+pancreatin+cellulase) was better.
Determination and Prediction of Digestible and Metabolizable Energy from the Chemical Composition of Chinese Corn Gluten Feed Fed to Finishing Pigs.

Abstract:Two experiments were conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of corn gluten feed (CGF) for finishing pigs and to develop equations predicting the DE and ME content from the chemical composition of the CGF samples, as well as validate the accuracy of the prediction equations. In Exp. 1, ten CGF samples from seven provinces of China were collected and fed to 66 finishing barrows (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial body weight (BW) of 51.9±5.5 kg. The pigs were assigned to 11 diets comprising one basal diet and 10 CGF test diets with six pigs fed each diet. The basal diet contained corn (76%), dehulled soybean meal (21%) and premix (3%). The ten test diets were formulated by substituting 25% of the corn and dehulled soybean meal with CGF and contained corn (57%), dehulled soybean meal (15.75%), CGF (24.25%) and premix (3%). In Exp. 2, two additional CGF sources were collected as validation samples to test the accuracy of the prediction equations. In this experiment, 18 barrows (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial BW of 61.1±4.0 kg were randomly allotted to be fed either the basal diet or two CGF containing diets which had a similar composition as used in Exp. 1. The DE and ME of CGF ranged from 10.37 to 12.85 MJ/kg of dry matter (DM) and 9.53 to 12.49 MJ/kg of DM, respectively. Through stepwise regression analysis, several prediction equations of DE and ME were generated. The best fit equations were: DE, MJ/kg of DM = 18.30-0.13 neutral detergent fiber-0.22 ether extract, with R(2) = 0.95, residual standard deviation (RSD) = 0.21 and p<0.01; and ME, MJ/kg of DM = 12.82+0.11 Starch-0.26 acid detergent fiber, with R(2) = 0.94, RSD = 0.20 and p<0.01. These results indicate that the DE and ME content of CGF varied substantially but the DE and ME for finishing pigs can be accurately predicted from equations based on nutritional analysis.
Measurements of Chemical Compositions in Corn Stover and Wheat Straw by Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

Abstract:Rapid, non-destructive methods for determining the biochemical composition of straw are crucial in ruminant diets. In this work, ground samples of corn stover (n = 156) and wheat straw (n = 135) were scanned using near-infrared spectroscopy (instrument NIRS DS2500). Samples were divided into two sets, with one set used for calibration (corn stover, n = 126; wheat straw, n = 108) and the remaining set used for validation (corn stover, n = 30; wheat straw, n = 27). Calibration models were developed utilizing modified partial least squares (MPLS) regression with internal cross validation. Concentrations of moisture, crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were successfully predicted in corn stover, and CP and moisture were in wheat straw, but other nutritional components were not predicted accurately when using single-crop samples. All samples were then combined to form new calibration (n = 233) and validation (n = 58) sets comprised of both corn stover and wheat straw. For these combined samples, the CP, NDF, and ADF were predicted successfully; the coefficients of determination for calibration (RSQC) were 0.9625, 0.8349, and 0.8745, with ratios of prediction to deviation (RPD) of 6.872, 2.210, and 2.751, respectively. The acid detergent lignin (ADL) and moisture were classified as moderately useful, with RSQC values of 0.7939 (RPD = 2.259) and 0.8342 (RPD = 1.868), respectively. Although the prediction of hemicellulose was only useful for screening purposes (RSQC = 0.4388, RPD = 1.085), it was concluded that NIRS is a suitable technique to rapidly evaluate the nutritional value of forage crops.
Prediction of the Digestible and Metabolizable Energy Content of Wheat Milling By-Products for Growing Pigs from Chemical Composition

Abstract:Thirty samples of wheat milling by-products (wheat bran, wheat middlings, wheat shorts, wheat red dog, wheat feed flour), collected from 11 flour mills, were fed to growing pigs to determine their digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) content and to establish equations for predicting their DE and ME content based on chemical analysis. The basal diet was based on corn and soybean meal while the other 30 experimental diets contained 290.4 g/kg wheat milling by-products added at the expense of corn and soybean meal. The 31 diets were fed to 96 growing pigs (BW = 61.9 +/- 3.2 kg) according to a completely randomized design during two successive periods. During each period, the 30 experimental diets were fed to three pigs and the basal diet was fed to six pigs, resulting in 6 replications per experimental diet and 12 replications for the basal diet over the two periods. The chemical composition of the 30 samples was variable, and starch and fiber content had a strong negative correlation (r = -0.96 to -0.99 for CF and ADF, respectively). The DE content of wheat feed flour, wheat red dog, wheat shorts, wheat middlings and wheat bran averaged 17.4, 16.9, 15.2, 12.5 and 12.0 MJ/kg DM, respectively. From the stepwise regression analysis, a series of DE and ME prediction equations were generated. The best fit equations for wheat milling by-products were: DE (MJ/kg DM) = 19.2 - (0.016 x aNDF) with R-2 = 0.94, RSD = 0.58 and P<0.01; and ME (MJ/kg DM) = 16.9 - (0.0136 x aNDF) with R-2 = 0.94, RSD = 0.50 and P<0.01. Few additional variables came into the equation models because of the strongly correlated relationships among chemical components. The results indicate that DE and ME content varied substantially and various correlated single predictors (aNDF, ash, CF, starch, etc.) can be used to accurately predict the DE and ME content when fed to growing pigs. Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate chemical composition, nitrogen-corrected true metabolizable energy (TMEn) and true amino acids digestibility of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) produced in China. Twenty five sources of corn DDGS was collected from 8 provinces of China. A precision-fed rooster assay was used to determine TMEn and amino acids digestibility with 35 adult cecectomized roosters, in which each DDGS sample was tube fed (30 g). The average content of ash, crude protein, total amino acid, ether extract, crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber were 4.81, 27.91, 22.51, 15.22, 6.35 and 37.58%, respectively. TMEn of DDGS ranged from 1,779 to 3,071 kcal/kg and averaged 2,517 kcal/kg. Coefficient of variation for non-amino acid crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber and TMEn were 55.0, 15.7, 15.9 and 17.1%, respectively. The average true amino acid digestibility was 77.32%. Stepwise regression analysis obtained the following equation: TMEn, kcal/kg = -2,995.6+0.88×gross energy+49.63×a* (BIC = 248.8; RMSE = 190.8; p<0.01). Removing gross energy from the model obtained the following equation: TMEn, kcal/kg = 57.88×ether extracts+87.62×a* (BIC = 254.3, RMSE = 223.5; p<0.01). No correlation was found between color scores and lysine true digestibility (p>0.05). These results suggest that corn DDGS produced in China has a large variation in chemical composition, and gross energy and a* value can be used to generate TMEn predict equation.

Abstract:The present experiment was conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME) content, and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy in growing pigs fed diets containing one of ten cottonseed meals (CSM) collected from different provinces of China and to develop in vitro prediction equations for DE and ME content from chemical composition of the CSM samples. Twelve growing barrows with an initial body weight of 35.2±1.7 kg were allotted to two 6×6 Latin square designs, with six barrows and six periods and six diets for each. A corn-dehulled soybean meal diet was used as the basal diet, and the other ten diets were formulated with corn, dehulled soybean meal and 19.20% CSM. The DE, ME and ATTD of gross energy among different CSM sources varied largely and ranged from 1,856 to 2,730 kcal/kg dry matter (DM), 1,778 to 2,534 kcal/kg DM, and 42.08 to 60.47%, respectively. Several chemical parameters were identified to predict the DE and ME values of CSM, and the accuracy of prediction models were also tested. The best fit equations were: DE, kcal/kg DM = 670.14+31.12 CP+659.15 EE with R(2) = 0.82, RSD = 172.02, p<0.05; and ME, kcal/kg DM = 843.98+25.03 CP+673.97 EE with R(2) = 0.84, RSD = 144.79, p<0.05. These results indicate that DE, ME values and ATTD of gross energy varied substantially among different CSM sources, and that some prediction equations can be applied to predict DE and ME in CSM with an acceptable accuracy.

Abstract:The experiment was conducted to determine the chemical composition, digestible energy (DE), metabolisable energy (ME) and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) in sunflower seed meal (SFSM) and to develop reasonable prediction equations for estimating energy digestibility based on chemical composition of these meals for growing pigs. Ten SFSMs were collected and 66 crossbred barrows (initial body weight=36.43 +/- 5.25 kg) were randomly allocated to one of eleven diets. The basal diet was based on corn and soybean meal which contained 82.2% corn, 14.8% de-hulled soybean meal and 3% premix. The test diets contained 30% SFSM at the expense of corn and soybean meals. The experiment comprised a 7-d adaptation period followed by a 5-d collection period of faecal matter and urine. On a dry matter (DM) basis, the content of crude protein, neutral and acid detergent fibre, and gross energy (GE) ranged from 29.33 to 39.09%, 38.15 to 55.40%, 24.59 to 37.34% and 18.65 to 21.50 MJ/kg, respectively. The concentration of DE and ME ranged from 10.51 to 12.47 MJ/kg and 10.26 to 12.16 MJ/kg of DM, respectively. The DE values and ATTD of GE among the ten SFSMs significantly differed (P<0.05). The ATTD of GE ranged from 52.86 to 63.90%. The best models for predicting DE and ME were also established. In conclusion, the chemical composition of SFSM was variable (coeffiecient of variance>10%) among the ten SFSMs (DM). The results of DE, ME and prediction equations could be applied to evaluate the energy digestibility of SFSM in growing pigs.
