Abstract:Nitrogen (N) application is often known to influence various properties in Chinese fir growth, but the regeneration failure and productivity decline in Chinese fir plantations are often affected by allelochemical compounds. Little is known about the interactive effect of allelochemicals and N sources on the plant growth in Chinese fir seedlings. Chinese fir seedlings were respectively subjected to the addition of ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA) and their combined additions. The pHBA addition alone promoted Chinese fir seedlings growth, but this effect was differentially affected by the interaction with NH4+ or NO3−. Both NH4+ and NO3− application improved plant growth, but the stimulatory effect of NO3− was weakened with addition of pHBA. Although NO3− addition combined with pHBA increased N accumulation in roots, the enzymes activities related to N assimilation were significantly decreased. These negative influences were also manifested through the decreased photosynthetic capacity, the reduction in photosynthates production and accumulation, and the destruction of chloroplast structural integrity. Moreover, the C/N ratio in root was obviously decreased and N assimilation was inhibited under the combined treatment of pHBA and NO3−, thereby aggravating C − N imbalance. The Chinese fir seedlings shifted their N uptake preference from NO3− to NH4+ when pHBA were added in soil. The dominant N source and allelochemicals interaction should be considered for Chinese fir growth.
Mature Conifers Assimilate Nitrate As Efficiently As Ammonium From Soils In Four Forest Plantations

Abstract:Conifers are considered to prefer to take up ammonium (NH4+) over nitrate (NO3-). However, this conclusion is mainly based on hydroponic experiments that separate roots from soils. It remains unclear to what extent mature conifers can use nitrate compared to ammonium under field conditions where both roots and soil microbes compete for nitrogen (N).We conducted an in situ whole mature tree nitrogen-15 (N-15) labeling experiment ((NH4+)-N-15 vs (NO3-)-N-15) over 15 d to quantify ammonium and nitrate uptake and assimilation rates in four 40-yr-old monoculture coniferous plantations (Pinus koraiensis, Pinus sylvestris, Picea koraiensis and Larix olgensis, respectively).For the whole tree, (NO3-)-N-15 contributed 39% to 90% to total N-15 tracer uptake among four plantations during the study period. At day 3, the (NO3-)-N-15 accounted for 77%, 64%, 62% and 59% by Larix olgensis, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus sylvestris and Picea koraiensis, respectively.Our study indicates that mature coniferous trees assimilated nitrate as efficiently as ammonium from soils even at low soil nitrate concentration, in contrast to the results from hydroponic experiments showing that ammonium uptake dominated over nitrate. This implies that mature conifers can adapt to increasing availability of nitrate in soil, for example, under the context of globalization of N deposition and global warming.

Effects of Nitrogen Forms on Nutrient Uptake and Growth of Trees

Abstract:Forest tree species take up both NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N forms of nitrogen (N) during their growth. However, the effects of N form on nutrition uptake and tree growth are different due to the different N forms. Generally, trees show preference to N source, and most conifers prefer to NH4(+)-N while the preference to N form of broadleaved trees is unclear. The preference may be correlated with the pH value of the site on which the trees grown. The trees grown on acid soil generally appear preference to NH4(+)-N while trees grown on litmusless or alkaline soil prefer to NO3(-)-N. Fungus also can alter the tree uptake characteristic to NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N. In some species, the NO3(-)-N uptake capacity increased remarkably while uptake capacity of NH4(+)-N keep consistent when fungus were inoculated. NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N have different effects on other nutrient ions uptake because of the difference charge of NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N. In general, NH4(+)-N accelerates the anion absorption while inhibits cation absorption. The effects of nitrogen forms on nutrition uptake are related with not only the charge of NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N, but also the restrain effects among other ions. Sometimes, NH4(+)-N inhibits NO3(-)-N uptake, but the mechanism is not very clear now. The form of which nitrogen is taken up by trees will induce the change of rhizospheric pH value. Uptake of NH4(+)-N results in the decrease of rhizospheric pH value. Contrary, uptake of NO3(-)-N will cause the increase of rhizospheric pH value. The change of rhizospheric pH value will affect nutrient availability and thus affect nutrition uptake and utilization by trees. Trees grow differently after NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N uptake. When supplied with NH4(+)-N, some confers that prefer to NH4(+)-N grow better while a few ammonium-preference conifers hardly show the better growth. Nevertheless, most plants grow better when both forms of N supplied simultaneously than either of N source supplied alone. For few similar studies were carried out with tree species, it needs to do more researches.
Uptake Patterns of Glycine, Ammonium, and Nitrate Differ among Four Common Tree Species of Northeast China

Abstract:Fundamental questions of how plant species within secondary forests and plantations in northeast China partition limited nitrogen (N) resource remain unclear. Here we conducted a 15N tracer greenhouse study to determine glycine, ammonium, and nitrate uptake by the seedlings of two coniferous species, Pinus koraiensis (Pinus) and Larix keampferi (Larix), and two broadleaf species, Quercus mongolica (Quercus) and Juglans mandshurica (Juglans), that are common in natural secondary forests in northeast China. Glycine contributed 43% to total N uptake of Pinus, but only 20, 11, and 21% to N uptake by Larix, Quercus, and Juglans, respectively (whole plant), whereas nitrate uptake was 24, 74, 88, and 68% of total uptake for these four species, respectively. Retention of glycine carbon versus nitrogen in Pinus roots indicated that 36% of glycine uptake was retained intact. Nitrate was preferentially used by Larix, Quercus, and Juglans, with nitrate uptake constituting 68∼88% of total N use by these three species. These results demonstrated that these dominant tree species in secondary forests in northeast China partitioned limited N resource by varying uptake of glycine, ammonium and nitrate, with all species, except Pinus, using nitrate that are most abundant within these soils. Such N use pattern may also provide potential underlying mechanisms for the higher retention of deposited nitrate than ammonium into aboveground biomass in these secondary forests.
Neighboring Tree Species Alter Uptake of NH4+ and NO3− by Chinese Fir

Abstract:Most of the plantations were planted with single species for economic reasons. Continuous planting of such single tree species over a longer period has led to a series of ecological problems including soil degradation, low stand productivity and ecosystem stability. Studies have suggested that mixed-species plantations have greater levels of ecosystem functions and services such as higher nutrient utilization and productivity than do monocultures. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata), as an important tree species of fast-growing timber, has been widely planted in subtropical areas of China over 4 decades. The growth of Chinese fir is largely modified by soil nutrient dynamics. To better manage Chinese fir plantation and provide suitable tree species selection for mixed Chinese fir, the study aims to explore the effect of different neighboring species on nitrogen (N) uptake of Chinese fir because N is a major nutrient limiting plant growth. Three typical species (Schima superba, Michelia macclurei, and Pinus massoniana) were selected to plant with Chinese firs. Similar size of 1-year-old seedlings was planted in pots, each containing one C. lanceolata and one other tree species, with two C. lanceolata seedlings in one pot as the control. After 6 months, the soil was labeled with 15NH4+ or 15NO3− at 0–5 cm and 5–15 cm depths. The results showed that the neighbor species identity caused the changes of Chinese firs biomass. The above- and below-ground biomass of Chinese firs in monoculture was 8.7 g and 4.2 g, respectively, while P. massoniana increased it by 60% and 40%, respectively. M. macclurei did not change the biomass of Chinese firs, while S. superba decreased the above- and below-ground biomass by 28% and 33%, respectively. Neighboring tree species increased N uptake rates of Chinese firs from the 5- to 15-cm-deep layer, but not from the 0- to 5-cm-deep layer. Chinese firs preferred NO3− in the 5- to 15-cm-deep layer, while in the 0- to 5-cm-deep layer, it did not show preference between the two N forms. These findings demonstrated, under the pot-specific vertical distribution patterns of roots, species interaction between certain neighboring species promoted the growth and N uptake of Chinese firs as they had flexible uptake strategies to use inorganic N in different soil layers. This pot study provided insights into forest management to enhance ecosystem services through the selection of appropriate combinations of tree species.
Effect of Different Nitrogen Sources on Ph and Phosphorus Availability in the Root-Soil Interface Zone of Pinus Massoniana

Abstract:The effects of different nitrogen sources on pH and the phosphorus availability in the root-soil interface zone of Pinus massoniana were studied by means of root-mat method.The results revealed that the addition of NH+4-N decreased the pH in the root-soil interface,while the addition of NO-3-N increased the pH in contrast with the control treatments.When fertilized with soluble P(PS),the pH change in the root-soil interface induced from different nitrogen forms changed little and the content of available P increased obviously.When fertilized with insoluble rock phosphate(PR),the extent to which the pH in the root-soil interface increased was bigger and the content of available P near the root plane changed little compared with the addition of only NO-3-N,while the extent to which the pH in the root-soil interface decreased was obviously smaller and the contents of the available P increased remarkably very near the root plane compared with the addition of only NH+4-N.The results showed that the protons excreted by the roots were the main activating factors for the solution of the rock P in the root-soil interface.
Nitrogen Uptake Strategies of Mature Conifers in Northeastern China,illustrated by the 15N Natural Abundance Method

Abstract:Abstract Background Conifers partition different N forms from soil, including ammonium, nitrate, and dissolved organic N (DON), to sustain plant growth. Previous studies focused on inorganic N sources and specific amino acid forms using 15 N labelling, but knowledge of the contribution of DON to mature conifers’ N uptake is still scarce. Here, we quantified the contribution of different N forms (DON vs. NH 4 + vs. NO 3 − ) to total N uptake, based on 15 N natural abundance of plant and soil available N, in four mature conifers ( Pinus koraiensis , Pinus sylvestris , Picea koraiensis , and Larix olgensis ). Results DON contributed 31%, 29%, 28%, and 24% to total N uptake by Larix olgensis , Picea koraiensis , Pinus koraiensis , and Pinus sylvestris , respectively, whereas nitrate contributed 42 to 52% and ammonium contributed 19 to 29% of total N uptake for these four coniferous species. Conclusions Our results suggested that all four conifers could take up a relatively large proportion of nitrate, while DON was also an important N source for the four conifers. Given that DON was the dominant N form in study soil, such uptake pattern of conifers could be an adaptive strategy for plants to compete for the limited available N sources from soil so as to promote conifer growth and maintain species coexistence.
Contrasting Effects of NH4+ and NO3− Amendments on Amount and Chemical Characteristics of Different Density Organic Matter Fractions in a Boreal Forest Soil

Abstract:Elevated nitrogen (N) deposition variously affects the soil carbon (C) cycle. It is not clear how deposited NH4+ and NO3− divergently affect the amount and stability of soil organic C (SOC) in the N-limiting forests. A multi-form N addition experiment was conducted in a boreal forest in the Great Khingan mountain in 2010. Three fertilizers, NH4Cl, KNO3 and NH4NO3, were applied at four rates of 0, 10, 20, and 40kgNha−1yr−1. Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis were used to determine the chemical structure and C contents in bulk soils and/or two density fractions (<1.70gcm−3 light fraction and >1.70gcm−3 heavy fraction). NH4Cl addition significantly decreased the SOC contents in the organic layer by 28.35% to 54.23%, but KNO3 addition significantly increased the SOC contents in the organic layer and mineral layer by 26.53% and 87.44%, respectively. Nitrogen addition rates significantly influenced the degradability (alkyl-C/O-alkyl-C) and hydrophobicity ((alkyl C+aromatic C)/(O-alkyl C+carboxyl C)) of light and heavy fractions, whereas N addition forms only impacted their aromaticity (aromatic C/(aromatic C+alkyl C+O-alkyl C)). The movement between residue-C and stable humin fraction, as well as the chemical stability of SOM could profoundly affect the storage of SOC under N enrichment. Overall, added NH4+ and NO3− differently affect C sequestration in the N-limiting forest soils. This should be differentiated in the biogeochemical models of CN cycle coupling.
Inorganic and organic nitrogen acquisition by a fern Dicranopteris dichotoma in a subtropical forest in South China

Abstract:The fern Dicranopteris dichotoma is an important pioneer species of the understory in Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) forests growing on acidic soils in the subtropical and tropical China. To improve our understanding of the role of D. dichotoma in nitrogen (N) uptake of these forests, a short-term (15)N experiment was conducted at mountain ridge (MR, with low N level) and mountain foot (MF, with high N level). We injected (15)N tracers as (15)NH4, (15)NO3 or (15)N-glycine into the soil surrounding each plant at both MR and MF sites. Three hours after tracer injection, the fern D. dichotoma took up 15NH4+ significantly faster at MF than at MR, but it showed significantly slower uptake of (15)NO3- at MF than at MR. Consequently, (15)NO3- made greater contribution to the total N uptake (50% to the total N uptake) at MR than at MF, but (15)N-glycine only contributed around 11% at both sites. Twenty-four hours after tracer injection, D. dichotoma preferred (15)NH4+ (63%) at MR, whereas it preferred (15)NO3- (47%) at MF. We concluded that the D. dichotoma responds distinctly in its uptake pattern for three available N species over temporal and spatial scales, but mainly relies on inorganic N species in the subtropical forest. This suggests that the fern employs different strategies to acquire available N which depends on N levels and time.
Uptake of Various Nitrogen Forms by Co-Existing Plant Species in Temperate and Cold-Temperate Forests in Northeast China

Abstract:The uptake of different soil nitrogen (N) forms by co-existing plant species is ecologically crucial, but in situ studies conducted to investigate this phenomenon across forest ecosystems are still limited. Here, stable isotope tracer techniques (C-13 and N-15)were used in the field, examining the uptake of inorganic and organic N by coexisting plant species, plasticity in N preference, and difference in the N uptake between layers of forest in temperate and cold-temperate forests in northeast China. Amino acid-N composed an important part (29% avg.) in the pool of available soil N (inorganic N and amino acid-N). The vegetation could take up glycine-derived N (intact uptake from 48% to 99%). With variation in habitat, Betula platyphylla and Sphagnum palustre modified their competitive abilities for uptake of intact glycine and apparent N preferences, illustrating the plasticity in the N preferences of plants. Due to the plasticity, the co-existing species appeared to show various N preference strategies in these forests. Canopy trees took up more glycine-derived N than understory plants, and vice versa for the inorganic N, which may be related to differences in the intensity of photosynthesis. This study indicates that soil amino acids are a potentially important N source, and various choices for N nutrition may alleviate interspecies competition and contribute to species co-existence in forest ecosystems in northeast China. Plasticity in N preference could underlie N source partitioning among the co-existing species. With ongoing N deposition in these and many other forest ecosystems, this research helps to clarify how soil-plant N cycling varies between canopy layers and the feedbacks that are taking place.
Higher resistance of larch-broadleaf mixed forests than larch forests against soil acidification under experimental nitrogen addition

Abstract:Background and aimsGrowing evidence has shown that nitrogen (N) deposition can lead to soil acidification and tree nutrient imbalance. Tree species-specific differences in plant-soil interactions may render different forest types exhibiting contrasting responses to N deposition, yet this remains largely untested.MethodsWe conducted N addition experiments (0 and 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1) separately in a larch (Larix kaempferi) forest and an adjacent larch-broadleaf mixed forest, and examined whether soil N availability, soil acid–base chemistry, leaf nutrients and stoichiometry of these two forests responded differently to four-year N addition.ResultsWe found that N addition increased soil nitrate concentrations at four soil layers (i.e. Oa + e, 0–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm), and resulted in soil acidification at Oa + e and 0–10 cm layers characterized by decreased pH and exchangeable base cations and increased hydrolyzing cations in the larch forest. In contrast to soil chemical properties, larch leaf nutrient stoichiometry except the C:N ratio showed no significant responses to N addition in the larch forest. Moreover, N addition did not significantly affect soil inorganic N concentration, soil acid–base chemistry, and tree leaf nutrients in the larch-broadleaf mixed forest.ConclusionsOur results suggest the higher resistance of larch-broadleaf mixed forests than larch forests against soil acidification under N addition, and highlight the establishment of conifer-broadleaf mixed forests is an important silvicultural practice to alleviate soil acidification induced by N deposition.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is essential in regulating plant growth and biomass allocation. Plant N uptake and assimilation influence species adaptation and distribution, yet intra-specific comparisons across environmental gradients are scarce. In this study, white birch ( Betula platyphylla ) seedlings from three Chinese provenances spanning a wide latitude and temperature gradient were cultivated with two inorganic (NO 3 and NH 4 ) and one organic (glycine) N forms. We evaluated seedling performance and N uptake for each N form, including the seedling's ability to uptake intact glycine using stable isotopes ( 13 C and 15 N). Our data show that both organic (glycine) and inorganic (NO 3 − ) fertilization forms significantly promoted seedling growth and increased the concentration of N, potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) in plant tissues. However, NH 4 + caused toxicity, evidenced by chlorosis and necrosis in the apex of old leaves, thereby limiting growth. Seedling growth increased with decreasing latitude, while nutrient concentrations in both shoots and roots decreased with decreasing latitude. Counter to traditional mineral nutrition theory, all seedlings took up intact glycine. Our study can help guide nursery fertilization practices and suggests that the climate of origin affects growth but does not substantially change the preferred N source.
Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Supply on Growth and Physiological Traits of Two Larix Species

Abstract:To investigate how nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization affect plant growth, biomass accumulation and allocation, leaf N and P concentration, and also eco-physiological responses of Larix species with contrasting growth characteristics, slow growing (L. olgensis) and fast growing (L. kaempferi) saplings grown in larch plantation soil were exposed to different N and P regimes. The results showed that N and combined N and P (NP) fertilization promoted growth with a higher biomass accumulation, height growth rate (GR(H)), net photosynthesis rated (P-n), and photosynthetic P-use efficiency (PPUE) in both species, while P fertilization alone had a positive effect on the growth of L. olgensis but a negative effect on that of L. kaempferi. Moreover, N and NP fertilization increased the photosynthetic N -use efficiency (PNUE) of L. olgensis, while all fertilization treatments decreased that of L. kaempferi. Furthermore, P fertilization increased the N concentration of L. olgensis leaves but had no influence on that of L. kaempferi leaves, while it decreased the NSC concentration of L. olgensis leaves but stimulated the accumulation of starch, fructose and NSC in L kaempferi leaves. In addition, L kaempferi with higher GRH showed a greater biomass accumulation, growth, P-n, PNUE, and PPUE when compared to L. olgensis, except for biomass and PPUE under P fertilization and PNUE under N fertilization. These results indicated that the N and P balance rather than the absolute amount of them enhances the growth of L. kaempferi effectively, and P fertilization affects the morphological and physiological traits of the two larch species differently. We propose that the distinct effects of P fertilization on the two larch species were related to different regulation effects of P fertilization on the N concentration, and on the accumulation and transportation of photosynthetic products. In a 19-year N addition experiment on plantations of ectomycorrhizal tree species Larix gmelinii (larch) and arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species Fraxinus mandshurica (ash), we determined root morphological, chemical and mycorrhizal traits, as well as soil properties. Concurrently, we used a field isotopic hydroponic method to measure root uptake rates of NH4+, 4 + , NO3-, 3- , and glycine in the early, mid and late growing season. Following N addition, mycorrhizal colonization rates in both species were reduced in early and late growing season. Root tissue density was reduced but specific root length and area were increased in ash under N addition across growing seasons, however, no significant differences in these traits were found in larch. Under N addition, both species showed lower uptake rates of all N forms and the total N than the controls throughout the growing season, except for the glycine-uptake of larch in early growing season. N addition did not modify the N-uptake preference in both species, but the contributions of specific N form to the total N varied with seasons. Collectively, referring to the framework of "root economics space", these two species particularly ash showed greater reliance on the "do-it-yourself" strategy for N acquisition under long-term N addition, although the degree of which somewhat varied with season. Seasonal dynamics in root N-uptake rates of ash were mainly related to soil temperature and moisture, rather than soil N properties, showing less direct impact of N addition. Our findings provide deep insights into the effect of N deposition on root N acquisition strategy and related functions of forest ecosystem.
Contrasting effects of N addition on the N and P status of understory vegetation in plantations of sapling and mature Larix principis-rupprechtii

Abstract:Aims The productivity of forest plantations in temperate areas is often limited by nitrogen (N), but may shift towards phosphorus (P) limitation with increasing atmospheric N deposition. Nutrient resorption is a nutrient conservation strategy in plants. Although data on nutrient resorption are available for overstory trees, there are few data for understory vegetation. Methods We examined leaf N and P concentrations and N and P resorption efficiencies (NRE and PRE, respectively) in eight understory species in 11- and 45-year-old Larix principis-rupprechtii stands subjected to N supplementation over a 3-year period. Important findings Leaf N concentrations and N:P ratios increased and P concentrations decreased, with N input in species within the 45-year-old stand, but not in the 11-year-old stand. NRE and PRE were not altered by N input in any of the species in either stand, but N resorption proficiency decreased and P resorption proficiency increased, in the species in the 45-year-old stand. Thus, the growth of understory species may be more P-limited in the 45- versus 11-year-old stand, and nutrient resorption proficiency was more sensitive to N addition than nutrient resorption efficiency. These results will improve the understanding of nutrient use strategies and their responses to N addition in understory vegetation. The contrasting effects of N addition on nutrient status between stand ages cannot be ignored when modeling ecosystem nutrient cycling under global N deposition conditions.
The Preference of Nitrate Uptake in Chinese Prickly Ash Estimated by Δ 15 N Values and Cation Concentrations

Abstract:The nitrogen isotopic compositions of plant tissue could reflect its uptake of and preference for ammonium or nitrate. However, various factors may influence the field-collected δ15N values under field condition, which causes the interpretation problematic. The spatial variation of nitrogen (N) concentrations and the isotopic compositions were investigated in the soils and tissues of Chinese prickly ash from the southwest China to the east China. The objectives were to investigate the variation in soil and tissue δ15N values and N forms taken up by the plant. The leaf and root δ15N values varied significantly in response to the pattern of soil δ15N values. The difference in δ15N values between the leaves and roots was 2.57‰ and may be caused by an increase in the transport of unassimilated \( {\text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } \) and \( {\text{NH}}_{4}^{ + } \) to the leaves. Leaf nitrogen was significantly and positively correlated with leaf potassium and negatively related to leaf calcium. Because potassium is the favoured counter-cation for nitrate transport in the xylem, the enrichment of 15N in leaf relative to root induced by preferenced uptake of nitrate should be accompanied by significant and positive relationship of leaf nitrogen with leaf potassium concentrations. These results suggest that Chinese prickly ash prefers \( {\text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } \) over \( {\text{NH}}_{4}^{ + } \).
Geographical variation of ecological stoichiometry and nutrient resorption in leaves of Pinus koraiensis and Fraxinus mandshurica

Abstract:In this study, we sampled leaves of coniferous species Pinus koraiensis and broad-leaved tree species Fraxinus mandshurica from four latitudes in northeastern China to investigate the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) stoichiometric characteristics and nutrient resorption efficiency and their potential relationships, as well as their responses to climatic and edaphic factors. The results showed that stoichiometric characteristics were species-specific, and that the C and N contents in leaves of F. mandshurica significantly increased with increasing latitude. The C:N of F. mandshurica and N:P of P. koraiensis were negatively correlated with latitude, but an inverse relationship was found for N:P of F. mandshurica. P resorption efficiency was significantly correlated with latitude in P. koraiensis. The spatial variation of ecological stoichiometry of these two species was mainly affected by climatic factors such as mean annual temperature and precipitation, while that of nutrient resorption was influenced by several soil factors such as soil pH and nitrogen content. Principal component analysis showed that P resorption efficiency of P. koraiensis and F. mandshurica was significantly negatively correlated with N:P, but positively correlated with P content. N resorption efficiency showed significantly positive correlation with P content but negative correlation with N:P in P. koraiensis. Compared with P. koraiensis, F. mandshurica was more inclined to fast investment and return in terms of leaf traits.
Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilization on Nutrient Dynamics and Stoichiometric Ratios of Three-Understory Plants in Chinese Fir Plantation

Abstract:Understory plants have important function in the ecological system. However, the influence of fertilization on the understory,especially the effect of phosphorus (P) input,which alters the influence of nitro?gen ( N) deposition in a forest has seldom reported. A typical Chinese fir plantation was selected as the re?search object in a subtropical forest.Five replications were established on five separate hilly slopes,and four treatments with nitrogen addition,phosphorus addition,both N with P addition and a control plot were randomly arranged within each replication. The leafs of three dominant understory plants were collected including two herbs and one shrub in their growing season and non?growing season 3 years after the field experiment of nitro?gen and andphosphorus addition.The nutrient dynamic change of the understory plant leaves was measured by determining its nutrient content, and the effect of fertilizer on nutrient dynamic was analyzed. The results showed that nitrogen addition increased plant N concentrations,by 18% for Cibotium barometz,25.4% for Di?cranopteris dichotoma and 19.6% for Adinandra millettii.Phosphorus addition increased plant P concentrations, by 31.1% for Cibotium barometz,33. 9% for Dicranopteris dichotoma and 11. 9% for Adinandra millettii. The content of P in plant tissues was the major driver for N∶P alteration.Nitrogen addition decreased the gap of the understory plant leaf nutrient content between the growing season and the non?growing season,phosphorus ad?dition decreased the gap of understory plant leaf nutrient content between the growing season and the non?grow?ing season,while N+P addition had no significantly effect on the gap of understory plant leaf nutrient content between the growing season and the non?growing season. In conclusion,in the ecological system relatively lac?king,P addition P is favourable to the stability of plant N/P ratio,and the control of the resource allocation of understory plants effectively.

Abstract:Background and aims Growth, morphological traits, and mycorrhizal colonization of fine roots show high degree of plasticity in response to changes in nutrient availability, causing shifts in root nutrient-foraging strategy. However, little is known about how this plasticity associated with root branching orders respond to atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in subtropical coniferous forests. Methods We used soil block sampling method to examine the responses of six key root functional parameters (including three morphological traits (specific root length (SRL), root tissue density (RTD), and root diameter), two growth indices (total root length (TRL) and biomass) on an areal basis across five root orders, and ectomycorrhizal (EM) tip colonization) to different doses and species of N addition in a slash pine ( Pinus elliottii ) plantation in subtropical China. Results TRL, root biomass in all root orders, and EM tip colonization increased significantly with N addition. However, SRL, RTD, and root diameter did not change in any root orders. In comparison to low doses of N input, high doses of N input exerted greater effects on lower-order roots. In regard to species of N added, stronger responses in lower-order roots were observed under ammonium-based than nitrated-based N input. Foliar P content was significantly decreased and stoichiometric N:P ratio was markedly increased in response to high dose of ammonium-based N input. Conclusions Fine root growth and EM tip colonization displayed higher degree of plasticity than morphological traits in response to N addition. The plastic responses were not root-order dependent, but dependent on both N dose and species, especially for ephemeral lower-order roots that are mostly like to be the main nutrient acquisition structures. Our results imply that while N limitation was alleviated by exogenous N input, P limitation may persist or even be exacerbated, thus causing an increase of absorptive root length, biomass, and dependence on ectomycorrhizae for nutrient acquisition in subtropical slash pine plantation forests.
