Abstract:We extend the theory of global geometrical optics method, proposed originally for the linear scalar high-frequency wave-like equations in [Commun. Math. Sci., 2013, 11(1): 105-140], to the more general vectorvalued Schrödinger problems in the semi-classical regime. The key ingredient in the global geometrical optics method is a moving frame technique in the phase space. The governing equation is transformed into a new equation but of the same type when expressed in any moving frame induced by the underlying Hamiltonian ow. The classical Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) analysis benefits from this treatment as it maintains valid for arbitrary but fixed evolutionary time. It turns out that a WKB-type function defined merely on the underlying Lagrangian submanifold can be obtained with the help of this moving frame technique, and from which a uniform first-order approximation of the wave field can be derived, even around caustics. The general theory is exemplified by two specific instances. One is the two-level Schrödinger system and the other is the periodic Schrödinger equation. Numerical tests validate the theoretical results.

Abstract:We introduce a new numerical strategy to solve a class of oscillatory transport PDE models which is able to captureaccurately the solutions without numerically resolving the high frequency oscillations {\em in both space and time}.Such PDE models arise in semiclassical modeling of quantum dynamics with band-crossings, and otherhighly oscillatory waves. Our first main idea is to use the nonlinear geometric optics ansatz, which builds theoscillatory phase into an independent variable. We then choose suitable initial data, based on the Chapman-Enskog expansion, for the new model. For a scalar model, we prove that so constructed model will have certain smoothness, and consequently, for a first order approximation scheme we prove uniform error estimates independent of the (possibly small) wave length. The method is extended to systems arising from a semiclassical model for surface hopping, a non-adiabatic quantum dynamic phenomenon. Numerous numerical examples demonstrate that the method has the desired properties.
Caustics in the sine-Gordon model from quenches in coupled 1D Bose gases

Abstract:Caustics are singularities that occur naturally in optical, hydrodynamic and quantum waves, giving rise to high amplitude patterns that can be described using catastrophe theory. In this paper we study caustics in a statistical field theory setting in the form of the sine-Gordon model that describes a variety of physical systems including coupled 1D superfluids. Specifically, we use classical field simulations to study the dynamics of two ultracold 1D Bose gases (quasi-condensates) that are suddenly coupled to each other and find that the resulting non-equilibrium dynamics are dominated by caustics. Thermal noise is included by sampling the initial states from a Boltzmann distribution for phononic excitations. We find that caustics pile up over time in both the number and phase difference observables leading to a characteristic non-thermal `circus tent' shaped probability distribution at long times.

This quasilinear system is new and has never been considered in the literature. The uniqueness of solutions of the quasilinear Poisson equation is obtained via the Minty--Browder theorem. The variational framework of the quasilinear system is built and the nontrivial solutions of the system are obtained via the mountain pass theorem.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for a contact discontinuity and a shock wave to the Euler system for one-dimensional gas dynamics. For the problem of a contact discontinuity and a shock wave perturbed by a small amplitude, high frequency oscillatory wave train, under suitable stability assumptions, we obtain that the perturbed problem has still a shock wave and a contact discontinuity, and we give their asymptotic expansions.

Abstract:Global geometrical optics method is a new asymptotic theory for solving the high-frequency linear wave equations. It was originally proposed for the Cauchy problem with WKB-type initial data. In this paper, we re-deduce this method in a different manner, so that it can be also applied to the Cauchy problem with extended WKB-type initial data. In particular, we apply this theory to the propagator of the Schr(o)dinger equation. It is revealed that the wave-field presented by the global geometrical optics method is exactly the half phase space formula proposed by Kay. As a by-product, we indicate that the Maslov index in the Van Vleck approximation can be determined by a simple algebraic relation through the global geometrical optics approximation.

Abstract:The interplay between the non-Hermiticity and dimensionality gives rise to exotic characteristics in higher dimensions, with one representative phenomenon known as the geometry-dependent skin effect (GDSE), which refers to that the localization of extensive eigenstates depends on the system's geometry under open boundary conditions. In this paper, we demonstrate the emergence of GDSE in a two-dimensional $sp$ optical ladder lattice with on-site atom loss, which can be manifested by anisotropic dynamics of Bloch oscillations in the bulk of the system. By applying a static force in different directions, the wave-packet dynamics retrieve the complex energy spectra with either nonzero or zero spectral winding number, indicating the presence or absence of skin accumulation in the corresponding directions, respectively. Our results reveal that the GDSE has an intrinsic anisotropic bulk dynamics independent of boundary conditions, and offer its realization and detection in quantum systems.

Abstract:We present a new approach to analyze the validation of weakly nonlinear geometric optics for entropy solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws whose eigenvalues are allowed to have constant multiplicity and corresponding characteristic fields to be linearly degenerate. The approach is based on our careful construction of more accurate auxiliary approximation to weakly nonlinear geometric optics, the properties of wave front-tracking approximate solutions, the behavior of solutions to the approximate asymptotic equations, and the standard semigroup estimates. To illustrate this approach more clearly, we focus first on the Cauchy problem for the hyperbolic systems with compact support initial data of small bounded variation and establish that the L-1-estimate between the entropy solution and the geometric optics expansion function is bounded by O(E-2), independent of the time variable. This implies that the simpler geometric optics expansion functions can be employed to study the behavior of general entropy solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Finally, we extend the results to the case with non-compact support initial data of bounded variation.
Dynamics of the infinite discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Abstract:The discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\Z^d$, $d \geq 1$ is an example of a dispersive nonlinear wave system. Being a Hamiltonian system that conserves also the $\ell^2(\Z^d)$-norm, the well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem follows for square-summable initial data. In this paper, we prove that the well-posedness continues to hold for much less regular initial data, namely anything that has at most a certain power law growth far away from the origin. The growth condition is loose enough to guarantee that, at least in dimension $d=1$, initial data sampled from any reasonable equilibrium distribution of the defocusing DNLS satisfies it almost surely.

Abstract:We develop a novel approach, named the global geometrical optics method, for the numerical solution to wave equations in the high-frequency regime. The initial Cauchy data is assumed to be in the WKB form. We first study the Schrodinger equation, and then extend relevant results to the general scalar wave equations. The basic idea of this approach is to reformulate the governing equation in a moving frame, and to derive a WKB-type function merely defined on the Lagrangian manifold induced by the Hamiltonian flow. From this WKB-type function, the wave solution can be retrieved to within first order accuracy by a coherent state integral. The merit of the proposed approach is manyfold. Firstly, compared with the thawed Gaussian beam approaches, it presents an approximate wave solution with first order asymptotic accuracy pointwise, even around caustics. Secondly, compared with the canonical operator method, this approach does not require any a priori knowledge about the structure of the Lagrangian manifold. Thirdly, compared with the frozen Gaussian beam approaches such as the Herman-Kluk semi-classical propagator method, the proposed approach involves an integral on a manifold of much lower dimension. We report numerical tests on both Schrodinger and Helmholtz equations.

Abstract:We study Schrödinger–Newton equations with general power nonlinearity on the lattice Zd . After the proof of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, our interest is focused on the existence of stable standing (stationary) solutions. Employing variational methods we prove the existence of a ground state solution solving the associated stationary system. Orbital stability as well as exponential localization of the ground state is verified. Finally, we discuss the existence of excitation thresholds for ground state solutions in dependence of the conserved mass ( l2 -norm).

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a class of planar Schrödinger-Poisson systems with critical exponential growth. We establish conditions for the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the energy space, which seems innovative as it was not discussed at all in any previous results. By introducing some new ideas and relaxing some of the classical growth assumptions on the nonlinearity, we show that such system has at least two standing waves with prescribed mass, where one is a ground state standing waves with positive energy, and the other one is a high-energy standing waves with positive energy. In addition, with the help of the local well-posedness, we show that the set of ground state standing waves is orbitally stable.

Abstract:For $n\geq 2$, we establish the smooth effects for the solutions of the linear fourth order Shr\"{o}dinger equation in anisotropic Lebesgue spaces with $\Box_k$-decomposition. Using these estimates, we study the Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equations with three order derivatives and obtain the global well posedness for this problem with small data in modulation space $M^{9/2}_{2,1}({\Real^{n}})$.

First, using reduction argument, truncation technique, Ekeland’s variational principle, and the Mountain Pass theorem, we obtain that the above system admits at least two solutions with different energy for λ large enough and ε fixed. Finally, we research the asymptotic behavior of solutions with respect to the parameters ε .
A Numerical Study of the Gaussian Beam Methods for One-Dimensional Schrodinger-Poisson Equations ⁄

Abstract:As an important model in quantum semiconductor devices, the Schrodinger-Poisson equations have generated widespread interests in both analysis and numerical simulations in recent years. In this paper, we present Gaussian beam methods for the numerical simulation of the one-dimensional Schrodinger-Poisson equations. The Gaussian beam methods for high frequency waves outperform the geometrical optics method in that the former are accurate even around caustics. The purposes of the paper are flrst to develop the Gaussian beam methods, based on our previous methods for the linear Schrodinger equation, for the Schrodinger-Poisson equations, and then check their validity for this weakly-nonlinear system.

Abstract:The solution to the Schrodinger equation is highly oscillatory when the rescaled Planck constant " is small in the semiclassical regime. A direct numerical simulation requires the mesh size to be O("). The Gaussian beam method is an efficient way to solve the high frequency wave equations asymptotically, outperforming geometric optics method in that the Gaussian beam method is accurate even at caustics. In this paper, we solve the Schrodinger equation using both the Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations of the Gaussian beam methods. A new Eulerian Gaussian beam method is developed using the level set method based only on solving the (complex-valued) homogeneous Liouville equations. A major contribution here is that we are able to construct the Hessian matrices of the beams by using the level-set function's first derivatives. This greatly reduces the computational cost in computing the Hessian of the phase function in the Eulerian framework, yielding an Eulerian Gaussian beam method with compu- tational complexity comparable to that of the geometric optics but with a much better accuracy around caustics. We verify through several numerical experiments that our Gaussian beam solutions are good approximations to the Schrodinger solutions even at caustics. We also numerically study the optimal relation be- tween the number of beams and the rescaled Planck constant " in the Gaussian beam summation.
Geometric Optics in Photonic Crystals: Angular Momentum, Dissipation Dipole, and Gauge Fields in the Extended Phase Space

Abstract:We present a geometric optics theory for the transport of quantum particles (or classical waves) in a chiral and dissipative periodic crystal subject to slowly varying perturbations in space and time. Taking account of some properties of particles and media neglected in previous theory, we find important additional terms in the equations of motion of particles. The (energy) current density field, which traces the geometric optics rays, is not only governed by the Bloch band energy dispersion but also involves there additional fields. These are the angular momentum of the particle, the dissipation dipole density, and various geometric gauge fields in the extended phase space spanned by space-time and its reciprocal, momentum and frequency. For simplicity, the theory is presented using light propagation in photonic crystals.
