Abstract:High storage density optical disk is expected as the key device for storage at the dawn of the full-scale multimedia age. It meets the requirement of a large storing capacity to record and retrieve great amounts of data including motion pictures, audio information and data for computer processing. The advanced storage media are the most important means for high density optical disk storage. According to optical diffraction limitation the diameter of the focused spot is proportional to (lambda) /NA, where (lambda) is writing and reading laser wavelength and NA is optical numerical aperture of focusing lens. Therefore, the practical approach for minimizing the mark length is to decrease (lambda) and to increase NA. There are three steps for decreasing laser wavelength from 780 - 800 nm used now to 630 - 650 nm (red diode lasers) and then to 400 - 500 nm (blue-green lasers). The advanced storage materials should be sensitive, stable and with recording performances at 630 - 650 nm and 400 - 500 nm laser wavelength regions. This paper reports our progress of three kinds of advanced storage materials for high density optical disks, there are: magneto-optical, phase change and organic storage materials. The main attention is put on rewritable (erasable) optical storage.

Abstract:High-density Optical storage technology which uses a 405 nm laser and an objective lens of high numerical aperture (NA)of 0.85 is developing rapidly due to its high capacity over 23 GB on a single layer of a 120mm-diameter optical disc and great commercial demands. New storage media have been the bottleneck in high density optical storage. Organic material can be an attractive optical storage medium with various advantages, such as good sensitivity, easy fabrication, reasonable cost and structural flexibility, etc, compared with inorganic storage material. Efforts have been made to seek for new organic storage materials with high performance matching the 405 nm short wavelength laser. In this paper, recent progresses in developing organic materials as recording media for high density blue laser optical storage are presented. The recording mechanism of recordable dye layer and basic requirements for the dye materials are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:The development of information technique requires that a data storage device must possess the character of ultra-high density, ultra-fast transfer rate and longer storage longevity. At present, the storage density of the most popular optical data storage is reaching the physics limit. Because of its strong penetration and high resolution, two-photon absorption can be applied to multi-layer optical data storage, and the bit density of which can reach as large as 10(12) bits/ cm(3). Now the key problem is to develop materials that have big two-photon absorption cross-sections. In this paper, progress in two-photon-absorbed organic materials is reviewed, and the new development of three-dimensional optical data storage based-on these materials is introduced.

Abstract:Although recordable disk are rapidly developing, the mainstream in the market is still the read-only manufactures such as CD-ROM and DVD-ROM which have prerecorded information. How to enhance the storage density of read only memory is one of the hotspots in optical data storage. The authors put forward novel theory for read only memory. The novel theory takes little organic molecule as memory medium of read only memory, and the writing process is photon-mode, which is called organic photonic read only memory (OP-ROM). According to the novel theory, disks can be massively copied by exposure. Furthermore, because of diversity and modifiability of organic molecules, the storage density can be improved by multi-wavelength, multi-level and multi-layer.

Abstract:With the development of optical data storage technology, how to improve storage density has been paid much attention to. Using the method of channel analysis, the factors and parameters influencing optical storage density are discussed, and it is concluded that the resolution of the optical system and the storage mechanism are two most important factors. In order to realize high density storage, either the resolution is improved through shorter wavelength, larger numerical aperture, super resolution and adding one more recording dimensions, or storage mechanism by decreasing recording spots and multiplexing recording spots.

Abstract:Research interests in short wavelength optical storage have been growing considerably in recent years. In this paper, we first present a brief introduction to the materials requirements for short wavelength optical storage and basic considerations on the relation between reflectivity and optical constants of the materials, and then report our experimental results on the optical and short wavelength recording properties of the azo dye and the phase change compounds, Ge2Sb2Te5 and Ag8In14Sb55Te23. The reflectivity contrast due to optical recording at 514.5 nm in the dye-polymer film is as high as 25%. The change in n and k of the phase change materials due to heat treatment can cause reasonably high reflectivity change at 500 nm, writing and erasing at 514.5 nm result in moderate reflectivity contrast. These suggest that the materials can be used for short wavelength optical storage.

Abstract:In this paper the magnetic and magneto-optical properties of amorphous rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys as well as the magnetic coupling in the multi-layer thin films for high density optical data storage are presented. Using magnetic effect in scanning tunneling microscopy the clusters structure of amorphous RE-TM thin films has been observed and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in amorphous RE-TM thin films has been interpreted. Experimental results of quick phase transformation under short pulse laser irradiation of amorphous semiconductor and metallic alloy thin films for phase change optical recording are reported. A step-by-step phase transformation process through metastable states has been observed. The waveform of crystallization propagation in micro-size spot during laser recording in amorphous semiconductor thin films is characterized and quick recording and erasing mechanism for optical data storage with high performance are discussed. The nonlinear optical effects in amorphous alloy thin films have been studied. By photo-thermal effect or third order optical nonlinearity, the optical self-focusing is observed in amorphous mask thin films. The application of amorphous thin films with super-resolution near field structure for high-density optical data storage is performed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Following the rapid development of information technologies,the great amounts of data require the storage media with higher volume.The recording materials matched with the recordable high density optical compact disc develop quickly.Phthalocyanine derivants have been successfully used in the optical storage system with the infrared light as reading and writing light sources.Seeking for the molecule system at short wavelength with the similar structure of great conjugate π bond system becomes the sticking point.Ferrocene substituted tetraaza annulene(14) nickel(II) complexes have the great conjugate π bond system,and the molecular absorption at 650nm is advisable,which match the laser of DVD drivers.Its sensitivity and thermal stability also satisfy the operating requirement.This kind of materials can be further developed as new storage materials.

Abstract:3D optical storage, spatially expanding storage capacity, is regarded as an effective and economical way to break the diffraction limit of the conventional 2D optical storage. In this study, a new kind of 3D optical storage medium, i.e., vanadium ions (V5+) doped sodium borate glass, is developed, showing intriguing spatially-selected photochromism (PC) upon laser driven excitation. Significantly, a brand-new PC mechanism of V5+-aggregation regulated by localized optical basicity (OB) of glass is proposed and demonstrated. The developed PC glass is responsive to a low-price desktop-level mini-laser to encode optical information, yields unique twofold decoding modes in bright- and dark-fields, and shows good data erasibility. 3D volumetric optical storage with a memory density of approximate to 480 Mbit cm-3 is realized with the aid of an advanced femtosecond laser micro-machining system. The findings suggest a novel design approach to fabricate 3D PC glass in terms of manipulating the scale of optical basicity in glass, hopefully stimulating the development of new multi-dimensional PC optical storage media. A new strategy to design photochromic glass as 3D optical storage medium is proposed, following a principle of regulating local optical basicity of glass during the interaction with a laser.image

Abstract:Optical data storage is a frontier in the information science. Currently, there are mainly two kinds of storage materials, i.e., thermal-optic and photonic materials. The storage methods are divided into serial and parallel modes. In the market, the mature technique is CD-RW, which uses the thermal-optic material and serial method. The storage density of the CD-RW is restricted by the size of material particles, the conduction of heat, etc. Besides, the recording speed is seriously limited by the process of heating. Photonic materials and parallel method will be the trend in the optical data storage. Because it is based on the photon reaction on the molecule scale, the storage density and speed will be greatly increased. In this paper, a new kind of organic photochromic material - pyrrylfulgide was studied. A parallel optical data storage system was established. Using the pyrrylfulgide/PMMA film as a recording medium, micro-images and binary digital information could be recorded, readout and erased in this parallel system. The recorded information on the film can be kept for at least 8 months in dark at room temperature. So far, the storage density is 3x10(7) bit/cm(2).

Enabling significant gains in both data transfer rates and storage densities,holographic storage has gained a great deal of recent attention.One of the primary challenges in the advancement of holographic storage has heen the development of suitable recording materials.In this article,we provide a brief introduction to holographic storage and its potential advantages over current technologies,outline the requirements for recording materials,and survey candidate materials. We end by highlighting recent progress in photopolymer materials,which can satisfy the requirements of practical holographic data storage systems.

Abstract:The principles and advances of micro-holographic multilayer optical disk data storage technology are introduced. The bit-oriented micrometer-sized reflection holograms can be written into a rapidly rotating homogeneous photopolymer disk.The focus of high-numerical-aperture beams and the counter propagating beams record micro-gratings with multiplexing methods inside the material.The traditional optical disk technology can also be utilized in this system.It expands the conventional bit-oriented storage into the third dimension,which has the advantages of high density,large capacity,simple structure and low cost.
