Abstract:In the Loess Plateau, the impact of abandoned farmland on soil properties and enzyme activity, along with its temporal variations and potential driving factors, remains a mystery. This study was designed to systematically and comprehensively examine the variations in soil enzyme activities, particle size distribution, and stability of soil aggregates at different stages of ecological recovery in the Loess Plateau. Our findings reveal a nuanced temporal pattern: with the progression of cropland abandonment, there is a notable decrease in soil bulk density. Concurrently, a dynamic trend in enzyme activities is observed-initially exhibiting a decline, followed by an increase over extended periods of recovery. Notably, prolonged abandonment leads to marked enhancements in soil structure. Parameters such as the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of soil aggregates show an overall increasing trend. In terms of the Relative Dissipation Index (RSI), our data indicate a sequence of control > 2 years of abandonment > 4 years > 6 years > 14 years. From this, it can be seen that fallowing may be an effective natural restoration strategy for improving the physical structure of soils in the Loess Plateau and restoring soil nutrients. However, positive changes may take a long time to become evident.
Effects of Different Crop Root Systems on Soil Detachment by Concentrated Flow on the Loess Plateau in China

Abstract:Soil erosion in sloping cropland is a major water and soil conservation issue in the Loess Plateau region, one of the main areas with sloping cropland in China. However, the effect of crop root systems, a major factor potentially influencing soil and water conservation in cropland, on farmland erosion, remains unclear. In the present study, soil erosion was investigated using indoor runoff scouring experiments with millet, maize, and soybean cover, with a bare surface as the control (CK), on sloping surfaces. Crop root system characteristics, rill initiation time, and erosion law, as well as their interactions, were investigated. Rill initiation time in slopes with all three crops slope were greater than that in the bare slope, indicating that crops could significantly enhance soil anti-scourability. Soil detachment rate decreased under crop cover when compared with bare land, considering the average soil detachment rate was the highest under CK, followed by under maize and soybean, and the least under millet. Slope gradient and unit discharge rate were positively correlated with soil detachment rate. Root length density, root surface area density, and root volume density were negatively correlated with soil detachment rate. Moreover, roots in the 0–1 mm diameter range dominantly influenced soil erosion.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau of China has experienced a lengthy drought and severe soil erosion. Changes in precipitation and land use largely determine the dynamics of runoff and sediment yield in this region. Trend and mutation analyses were performed on hydrological data (1981-2012) from the Yanwachuan watershed in the Loess Plateau Gully Region to study the evolution characteristics of runoff and sediment yield. A time-series contrasting method also was used to evaluate the effects of precipitation and soil and water conservation (SWC) on runoff and sediment yield. Annual sediment yield declined markedly from 1981 to 2012 although there was no significant change in annual precipitation and annual runoff. Change points of annual runoff and annual sediment yield occurred in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Compared with that in the baseline period (1981-1996), annual runoff and annual sediment yield in the change period (1997-2012) decreased by 17.0% and 76.0%, respectively, but annual precipitation increased by 6.3%. Runoff decreased in the flood season and normal season, but increased in the dry season, while sediment yield significantly declined in the whole study period. The SWC measures contributed significantly to the reduction of annual runoff (137.9%) and annual sediment yield (135%) and were more important than precipitation. Biological measures (forestland and grassland) accounted for 61.04% of total runoff reduction, while engineering measures (terraces and dams) accounted for 102.84% of total sediment yield reduction. Furthermore, SWC measures had positive ecological effects. This study provides a scientific basis for soil erosion control on the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:The study aimed at the impacts of the different landforms on the soil physical composition,soil moisture content and soil fertility of the slope loess field under sand cover.The series of samples were collected at section planes and vertical soil layers,in Yinmaquan watershed located on the boundary between Shenmu County and Dongsheng City,where the slope field had the representations.The soil texture,gravimetric soil moisture content and organic matter content of the samples were measured.Based on the analysis of the data,conclusions were obtained: 1) The soil texture and physical clay granule content were indices to indicate the desertification degree and evolvement trend.The study area demonstrated a drier and coarser trend towards northwest.2) There were different evolution laws of soil moisture content with different landform positions.It increased vertically from the top to upside of hilly slope,but decreased from the downside to foot.Whatever position the landform had,there was a similar balanced depth existed for the soil to evaporate,infiltrate,leak and hold water.3) The physical clay granule content had closely relationship with the soil fertility and moisture content.The section planes with higher physical clay granule contents had richer soil fertility and more moisture content.4) Effects of the combination of water,fertilizer and organic matter became more effective from the top to the foot of slope field,indicating that landform always had significant impacts on the series of evolution processes such as soil mellowing processes,soil degradation,soil erosion and soil desertification.Furthermore,the results also highlighted the evolution of soil texture with the landforms and the vertical soil layers,and could indicate the process of soil desertification and materials sources.
Effects of the Gully Land Consolidation project on soil erosion and sediment yield on the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Land consolidation can increase area of arable land, improve the ecological environment and is widely used worldwide. The Gully Land Consolidation (GLC), as a special type of land consolidation, significantly impacts soil erosion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the GLC on soil erosion and sediment yield under different rainfall events and hydrological years in Xingshuyaozi watershed on the Chinese Loess Plateau, where the GLC area accounted for 10.36% of the watershed. A computer model integrated with the Chinese Soil Loss Equation (CSLE) and the continuity equation of sediment was used. Sediment connectivity before and after the GLC were compared to illustrate the effect of the GLC on sediment yield. The results showed that the reduction in soil loss increased with increasing rainfall amount, and the reduction rate of soil erosion was over 50%. The GLC had the largest effect on soil erosion in wet years. The GLC effectively decreased sediment at the outlet of the watershed, with over 99% of sediment being trapped. The reduction efficiency of soil erosion and sediment yield decreased in order of wet year, normal year and dry year. The decreased soil erosion and sediment yield resulted from the significantly lowered slope gradients and sediment connectivity after the GLC. These results indicate that the GLC is an effective soil and water conservation measure. These results can provide technical support for the application of the GLC and policymaking. Abstract:Rocky desertification induced by severe deforestation has caused the water loss and soil erosion in karst regions in southeast China, limiting local social and economic developments. To prevent further rocky desertification, the farmland which had obtained by deforestation were abandoned for recovery. As soil quality improved by agriculture abandonment should be examined, it is necessary to investigate the dynamics of physical and chemical properties of soil in different ages after abandonment. In this study, 38 investigation sites were selected for soil sampling on the slopes in Longtan trough valley in Youyang County, Chongqing Municipality, China. The dominant plant species of the investigation sites were also noted during soil sampling. The sites were divided into seven age classes according to their abandonment time. Dynamics of water content, bulk density, pH, and concentration of available potassium, available phosphorus, available nitrogen, total nitrogen and organic matters were examined. It suggests that soil quality might be deteriorated right after abandonment and then improved from around 20 years after abandonment. Deterioration of soil quality may be induced by lack of plant coverage and exposure of rock outcrops which may accelerate water loss and swelling and shrinkage cycles of soil. After the formation of plant communities and litter layer above the ground, soil quality was then apparently improved. These findings can provide a potential guideline for recovery management in karst regions in southwest of China.

Abstract:Soil aggregate stability can indicate soil quality, and affects soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic nitrogen (SON) sequestration. However, for erodible soils, the effects of soil aggregate stability on SOC and SON under land use change are not well known. In this study, soil aggregate distribution, SOC and SON content, soil aggregate stability, and soil erodibility were determined in the soils at different depths along the stages following agricultural abandonment, including cropland, abandoned cropland, and native vegetation land in an erodible region of Southwest China. Soil aggregation, soil aggregate stability, and SOC and SON content in the 0–20 cm depth soils increased after agricultural abandonment, but soil texture and soil erodibility were not affected by land use change. Soil erodibility remained in a low level when SOC contents were over 20 g·kg−1, and it significantly increased with the loss of soil organic matter (SOM). The SOC and SON contents increased with soil aggregate stability. This study suggests that rapidly recovered soil aggregate stability after agricultural abandonment promotes SOM sequestration, whereas sufficient SOM can effectively maintain soil quality in karst ecological restoration.

Abstract:Large-scale land consolidation projects (LCPs) have been carried out on the Loess Plateau to increase the area of agriculture land. The newly created land is prone to soil erosion under the effects of water and gravity. Taking a typical high-filling body (HFB) formed by LCPs in Yan'an, China as the subject, this study comprehensively investigated the types and causes of soil erosion with multiple methods of field investigation, on-site monitoring and laboratory tests. Results showed that the HFB presented a composite pattern of soil erosion with multiple types mainly including underground erosion, mixed water-gravity erosion, seepage erosion, and scouring erosion. The type of erosion varied spatially in different parts of the HFB depending on the dominant factors, mainly including the groundwater state, rainfall, runoff, gravity action, topography, and soil erodibility. The underground erosion mainly occurred at the positions with higher groundwater level and larger hydraulic gradient, while scouring erosion mainly occurred at the positions with extensive interactions of surface runoff, channel slope gradient and soil properties. And near the leading edge of the top of the slope, a band of mixed water-gravity erosion occurred owing to the effects of water and gravity. In addition, nearly saturated soils at the toe of HFB displayed groundwater exfiltration and slope-face slumping. Based on our findings on the causes and variation of soil erosion for the HFB, we proposed the following erosion prevention and control measures to protect the LCPs on the Loess Plateau: to construct drainage ditches and blind ditches to form a complete drainage system, plant alfalfa on the top platform to increase rainfall interception and reduce surface runoff, set seepage ditches and planting deep-rooted plants at the toe of the slope to improve slope toe stability, monitor groundwater level and slope deformation to learn the erosion dynamics and slope stability, and optimize the geometry of HFB such as the slope gradient and slope steps to reduce soil erosion.

Abstract:The combination of continuous cereal cropping, tillage and stubble removal reduces soil fertility and increases soil erosion on sloping land. The objective of the present study was to assessment soil fertility changes under stubble removal and stubble retention in the Loess Plateau where soil is prone to severe erosion. It was indicated that soil N increased a lot for and two stubble retention treatments had the higher N balance at the end of two rotations. Soil K balance performed that soil K was in deficient for all treatments and two stubble retention treatments had lower deficit K. The treatments with stubble retention produced higher grain yields than the stubble removal treatments. It was concluded that stubble retention should be conducted to increase crops productivity, improve soil fertility as well as agriculture sustainability in the Loess plateau, China.
Assessing the effects of changes in land use and climate on runoff and sediment yields from a watershed in the Loess Plateau of China

Abstract:The changes in runoff and sediment load in the Loess Plateau of China have received considerable attention owing to their dramatic decline during recent decades. In this paper, the impacts of land-use and climate changes on water and sediment yields in the Huangfuchuan River basin (HFCRB) of the Loess Plateau are investigated by combined usage of statistical tests, hydrological modeling, and land-use maps. The temporal trends and abrupt changes in runoff and sediment loads during 1954-2012 are detected by using non-parametric Mann-Kendall and Pettitt tests. The land-use changes between 1980 and 2005 are determined by using transition matrix analysis, and the effects of land-use and climate changes on water and sediment yields are assessed by using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model and four scenarios, respectively. The results show significant decreasing trends in both annual runoff and sediment loads, whereas slightly decreasing and significantly increasing trends are detected for annual precipitation and air temperature, respectively. 1984 is identified as the dividing year of the study period. The land-use changes between 1980 and 2005 show significant effects of the Grain for Green Project in China. Both land-use change and climate change have greater impact on the reduction of sediment yield than that of water. Water and sediment yields in the upstream region show more significant decreases than those in the downstream region under different effects. The results obtained in this study can provide useful information for water resource planning and management as well as soil and water conservation in the Loess Plateau region.
Evaluating the coupling effects of climate aridity and vegetation restoration on soil erosion over the Loess Plateau in China

Abstract:In this study, the coupling effects of climate aridity and vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment yield over the Loess Plateau were examined and characterized. To take into consideration the complexity of drought, as well as the varied strengths and weaknesses of different drought measures, two drought indices are selected to identify and evaluate drought variability. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data were obtained to monitor and express spatiotemporal variations in vegetation cover. The results show that most regions of the Loess Plateau experienced increasingly severe droughts over the past 40years, and these regions comprise the major source of the Yellow River sediment. Climatic drying initially occurred in the 1990s, and became statistically significant in 2000s. The increasingly severe droughts could negatively impact surface and groundwater supplies as well as soil water storage, but may also minimize surface runoff yield, which is one of the major causes of soil erosion on the Loess Plateau. Vegetation cover on the Loess Plateau was significantly improved after the implementation of "Grain for Green" project, which were helpful for controlling severe soil erosion. With the impacts of the construction of check dams, terraces and large reservoirs, runoff and sediment yield over the Loess Plateau initially exhibited downward trends between 1970 and 1990. After 1990, with the effects of the climate warming and drying, a second sharp reduction in runoff and sediment yield occurred. The coupling effects of climate aridity and vegetation restoration have led to a third significant decrease in runoff and sediment yield over the Loess Plateau after 2000.

Abstract:Because of overcultivation in the semiarid Loess Plateau during the past half century, soil erosion has become a serious problem in maintaining a sustainable ecosystem. To find an effective way to overcome soil erosion, we investigated the changes of soil pH, soil bulk density, soil aggregate distribution and stability, and soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and available phosphorus associated with soil aggregates when cropland was converted to grassland on the semiarid Loess Plateau of China. In 2003, a typical cropland was planted with (i) perennial legume species alfalfa (Medicago sativa Linn.) at a density of 22.5 kg ha(-1), (ii) the biennial legume species sweetclover (Melilotus of. cianalis Linn.) at a density of 11.3 kg ha(-1), and (iii) natural regeneration. By 2008, the soil pH and soil bulk density significantly decreased in all treatments. The number of soil aggregates in the 2 to 1-mm and 1 to 0.5-mm categories and the stability of aggregates significantly increased (P < 0.05) in all treatments. In different size categories of soil aggregates, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen increased, but available phosphorus significantly decreased in all treatments. Soil total phosphorus was not significantly different between treatments. Overall, soil physical properties significantly improved after the cropland was converted to grassland in all treatments. The natural regeneration treatment showed the best improvement.
Asynchronized erosion effects due to climate and human activities on the central Chinese Loess Plateau during the Anthropocene and its implications for future soil and water management

Abstract:Variations and regional differences in land surface processes during the Anthropocene have directly impacted local economic development and social stability. Nevertheless, little is known about the historical erosion effects and human–environment interactions at annual and decadal scales on the central Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) over the past 200 years, when human activities and annual sediment discharge both reached historical peaks. Located in the northcentral hilly–gully and southcentral plateau–gully regions, respectively, the Jingbian and Heshui landslide‐dammed reservoirs were ideal settings to reconstruct the erosion flux and precipitation over A.D. 1850–2000 due to vertical stacking of interannual couplets. During this period, the mean annual specific sediment yield reached 1.17 × 104 t/(km2 a) in the Jingbian catchment (precipitation threshold of 30 mm), while it reached 1.13 × 104 t/(km2 a) in the Heshui catchment (precipitation threshold of 40 mm) according to sediment yield with frustum and extrapolation of historical precipitation. Interannual El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events were deemed a primary climatic factor inducing soil erosion over the central CLP. This should remind decision‐makers that it is necessary to prevent large‐scale floods and severe erosion before future ENSO events. Changes in population, policies, and human activities also affected land surface processes on the central CLP during 1850–2000. In addition, the results revealed that abandoned farmlands in the southcentral regions with 600 mm and more precipitation had a strong ecological resilience, while this was weak in the northcentral drier region. These findings imply that future ecological restoration of the central CLP should consider the ecological resilience of farmlands that have been recently abandoned due to urbanization. These novel results provide new insights into regional soil and water management under China's development agenda of ‘Ecological Conservation and High‐quality Development of the Yellow River Basin’. Asynchronized effects of soil erosion driven by interannual precipitation and human activities in the northcentral hilly–gully and southcentral plateau–gully regions at the Chinese Loess Plateau over A.D. 1850‐2000.

Water and Sediment Evolution in Areas with High and Coarse Sediment Yield of the Loess Plateau

Abstract:In the past few years, the amount of sediment entering the Yellow River decreased significantly in areas with high and coarse sediment yield of the Loess Plateau. Some researchers considered that it was owing to the soil and water conservation project, while others believed that it was caused by the low precipitation. The observation data showed that the ultimate soil erosion modulus in 1960s could reach 150,000 t km−2. However some experts preferred to believe that the ultimate soil erosion modulus in 1960s was wrong due to some uncertain mistakes. This paper quantitatively analyzed the spatial-temporal evolution pattern of sediment yield in areas with high and coarse sediment yield of the Loess Plateau over the past 50 years, by simulating the precipitation-runoff and soil erosion in 12 sample years with the digital watershed model. Some preliminary conclusions have been drawn as following: since the 1960s and 1970s, the rainstorm center had moved southward and the intensity of rainfall center became weaker and spread into dispersed rainfall distribution in areas with high and coarse sediment yield; the decrease of the amount of sediment entering the Yellow River was caused by the changes of rainfall type in recent years; the rainstorm of 1967 was concentrated in the region nearby “Shenmu-Fugu” in Shaanxi Province, and the annual maximum transport modulus (150,000 t km−2) measured in Bullpen Ditch of the left bank tributary between “Shenmu” and “Fugu” in 1967 is reasonable.
Effects of vegetation restoration on soil infiltrability and preferential flow in hilly gully areas of the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Soil infiltration plays a critical role in soil hydrological processes. Land use/cover changes are generally considered to influence soil infiltration. However, the effect of long-term vegetation restoration on the soil infiltration capacity and infiltration pattern is poorly understood. In the present study, we analyzed the infiltration capacity with a double ring infiltrometer and detected the degree of preferential flow using a dye tracer in a typical loess hilly gully catchment of China. Additionally, we identified the relationships between soil characteristics and infiltration capacity and preferential flow. The results showed that (1) converting cropland to forest, shrubland and grassland generally enhanced the soil infiltration capacity. Compared with cropland, the steady-state infiltration rate (SIR) and saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K s ) increased by 135 % and 155 % in shrubland, by 76 % and 91 % in forest, and by 22 % and 23 % in grassland. (2) Land use changes markedly increased the degree of preferential flow, following the order of shrubland > forest > grassland > cropland. (3) The decline in soil moisture (SM) and bulk density (BD) and the increase in total porosity (TP), macroporosity (MP) and soil organic matter (SOM) could cause higher infiltration capacity and preferential flow. SM and TP were the dominant factors affecting soil infiltrability, while MP was the greatest contributor to variations in preferential flow. Our findings demonstrated that vegetation restoration had a positive impact on soil infiltrability and preferential flow. This effect should be considered when assessing the influence of vegetation restoration on water resources in the Loess Plateau and other arid and semiarid regions.

Abstract:Investigations of runoff and sediment yield changes and their relationships with potential driving factors provide good insights for understanding the mechanisms of hydrological processes. This study attempted to present a comprehensive investigation on the spatiotemporal variations of sediment yield in the Loess Plateau using continuous observed data at 46 hydrological stations during 1961–2016, and its responses to changes of precipitation, land use/cover and vegetation cover were analyzed by using the Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM). The results indicated that sediment yield reduced pronouncedly during 1961–2016 in the Loess Plateau, and 77.9% of this variation was explained by the combined effects of precipitation, land-use change, vegetation dynamics and runoff reduction. Indirect effects of precipitation, land-use change, and vegetation cover on sediment yield were 0.242, −0.528 and −0.630 (P < 0.05), respectively, and direct effect of runoff on sediment yield was 0.833 (P < 0.05). According to the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, the strongest positive correlation existed between annual sediment yield and runoff (r = 0.88, P < 0.05), followed by vegetation cover (r = −0.47, P < 0.05) and land-use change (i.e. forest land and grassland) suggesting their significant trapping effects on soil erosion. However, lower correlations were examined between sediment yield and precipitation indices (−0.14<r < 0.34), (p 25) (r = 0.34). Overall, changes in runoff and land-use/vegetation cover well explained variations in sediment yield in the Loess Plateau. The findings are expected to provide scientific and technical support for future soil and water conservation planning in the Loess Plateau, and are valuable for sustainable water resources and sediment load management in the Yellow River Basin.</r

Abstract:Soil erosion has become a major global environmental problem and is particularly acute on the Loess Plateau (LP), China. It is therefore highly important to control this process in order to improve ecosystems, protect ecological security, and maintain the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. We compared the effects of rainfall and land use (LU) patterns on soil erosion in different LP watersheds in this study in order to augment and improve soil erosion models. As most research on this theme has so far been focused on individual study areas, limited analyses of rainfall and LU patterns on soil erosion within different- scale watersheds has so far been performed, a discrepancy which might influence the simulation accuracies of soil erosion models. We therefore developed rainfall and LU pattern indices in this study using the soil erosion evaluation index as a reference and applied them to predict the extent of this process in different-scale watersheds, an approach which is likely to play a crucial role in enabling the comprehensive management of this phenomenon as well as the optimized design of LU patterns. The areas considered in this study included the Qingjian, Fenchuan, Yanhe, and Dali river watersheds. Results showed that the rainfall erosivity factor (R) tended to increase in these areas from 2006 to 2012, while the vegetation cover and management factor (C) tended to decrease. Results showed that as watershed area increased, the effect of rainfall pattern on soil erosion gradually decreased while patterns in LU trended in the opposite direction, as the relative proportion of woodland decreased and the different forms of steep slope vegetation cover became more homogenous. As watershed area increased, loose soil and craggy terrain properties led to additional gravitational erosion and enhanced the effects of both soil and topography.

Abstract:Land disturbance and land restoration are important factors influencing runoff production and sediment yield in the semi-arid loess regions of China. This study compared the runoff production and sediment yield during the early stage after land disturbance (ESLD) with those during restoring stage after land disturbance (RSLD). Grey relational analysis was used to analyse the importance of each one of the influencing factors (vegetation, rainfall, soil and topography) in affecting the runoff production and sediment yield. Our results showed that during ESLD, topography was the most critical factor controlling the runoff production, while soil was the most important factor controlling the sediment yield. During RSLD, vegetation was more important in affecting runoff production, while rainfall was more important in affecting sediment yield. In additional, this study demonstrated that both the runoff production and the sediment yield can be effectively reduced by restoring vegetation on severely-disturbed lands, thus providing an important theoretical basis for better implementations of the Grain for Green Program. Our results revealed that the vegetation types of Hippophae rhamnoides+Pinus tabulaeformis and H. rhamnoides are better plant selections for land restoration in this area, especially for relatively gentle slopes (i.e., less than 20 degrees).

Abstract:Determining changes in grassland ecosystem carbon (C) storage and soil C stability after cropland abandonment is important for estimating the regional C budget and global C cycle. However, the understanding of ecosystem C storage and allocation and soil C stability along the grassland restoration chronosequence is insufficient. Thus, grasslands with different recovery years (0, 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 18, 26 and 30 years) were chosen to monitor the dynamics of grassland ecosystem C storage, vegetation biomass C storage, soil C storage, and soil C stability in different soil depths, as well as a natural grassland (NG) reference. The results showed that aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), soil C storage, ecosystem C storage, the very labile fraction of oxidizable C (C1) (0 – 0.3 m layers), the labile fraction of oxidizable C (C2) (0 – 0.3 m layers), and the C management index (CMI) increased with the recovery years. The vegetation species richness (R), vegetation species evenness (E) and vegetation species diversity (H') initially increased, peaking at 18a and then decreasing with recovery years, but the soil C stability index (SI) at 0 – 0.3 m decreased over time. Additionally, the AGB, BGB, litter biomass (LB), R, H', ecosystem C storage, and SI (0 – 0.3 m and 0.5 – 1.0 m layers) of 30 year grassland (GL30) showed no significant differences relative to those found in the NG. Furthermore, the soil C sequestration rate decreased with decreasing soil depth, while the soil C stability increased. These results suggest an optimistic outlook for the recovery of ecosystem C, but the soil C under these conditions is unstable, posing a risk to soil C sequestration in abandoned cropland on the Loess Plateau without appropriate management.This article is protected by copyright. Effects of vegetation and climate on the changes of soil erosion in the Loess Plateau of China

Abstract:Soil erosion is simultaneously driven by multiple factors. Identifying the dominant controlling factors and quantifying the contribution of each factor would be helpful to sustain water and soil resources. China's Loess Plateau was taken as an example area to investigate the above issues since it is the most eroded region in the world, and its soil loss is being controlled by a large-scale revegetation program. We extended the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to large-scale erosion estimation with the aid of GIS for the period of 1986–2015, analyzed the relationship between erosion and controlling factors by correlation and wavelet coherence analysis, and quantified the contribution of each factor to erosion change by the elasticity coefficient method. Results showed that the soil erosion decreased from 1013 t·km−2·a−1 in 1991–1995 to 595 t·km−2·a−1 in 2011–2015, with a downward trend in the whole period. Spatially, most areas had soil erosion of slight intensity, and the areas with high-intensity erosion concentrated in a northeast-southwest strip with hilly-gully landscapes or densely distributed rivers. The changes in surface conditions including vegetation cover and soil conservation measures had dominant effects on the spatial heterogeneity of erosion, their contribution to erosion reduction was 119%. But rainfall erosivity increased soil erosion, and it had a contribution to erosion reduction of −28%. These results are helpful in understanding the mechanism behind the changes in soil erosion and providing information for sustainable soil and water management and vegetation restoration.
