Abstract:Based on the generalized logistic model, we propose and study the global attractivity of the following generalized Lotka–Volterra competition model with distributed delays, [ ẋ_1(t) = r_1x_1(t) (1- (x_1(t)/K_1 )^θ_1-α_12∫_-∞^tx_2(s)/K_1dH_2(t-s) ),; ẋ_2(t) = r_2x_2(t) (1-α_21∫_-∞^tx_1(s)/K_2dH_1(t-s)- (x_2(t)/K_2 )^θ_2), ] where all the constants are positive and H_i:[0,∞)→ℝ is a non-increasing function of bounded variation with ∫_0^∞dH_i(s) =-1 ( i = 1, 2). Suppose that K 1 > α 12 K 2 and K 2 > α 21 K 1 . First, we completely describe the structure of equilibria. The system has at least one positive equilibrium. Roughly speaking, the system has a unique positive equilibrium if max θ 1 , θ 2 ≥ 1 and, otherwise, it has at most three positive equilibria. Then, using the iterative method, we show that the system is globally attractive if it has a unique positive equilibrium. The obtained results not only correct but also greatly improve some existing ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a discrete Gilpin–Ayala competition model and a discrete Gilpin–Ayala type multispecies competition–predator model. For general nonautonomous case, sufficient conditions which ensure the permanence and the global stability of the system are obtained; For periodic case, sufficient conditions which ensure the existence of an unique globally stable positive periodic solution of the system are obtained. An example together with its numeric simulations shows the feasibility of the main results.

Abstract:In this article, we study the global dynamics of a discrete two-dimensional competition model. We give sufficient conditions on the persistence of one species and the existence of local asymptotically stable interior period-2 orbit for this system. Moreover, we show that for a certain parameter range, there exists a compact interior attractor that attracts all interior points except Lebesgue measure zero set. This result gives a weaker form of coexistence which is referred to as relative permanence. This new concept of coexistence combined with numerical simulations strongly suggests that the basin of attraction of the locally asymptotically stable interior period-2 orbit is an infinite union of connected components. This idea may apply to many other ecological models. Finally, we discuss the generic dynamical structure that gives relative permanence.

Abstract:Beverton–Holt Ricker competition model is a planar difference system that describes intraspecific competition among individuals and interspecific competition. Known works investigated the stability of equilibria in some cases, showed the existence of stable 2-periodic points when there are no interior equilibria, and found numerically an attractor with riddled basin of attraction for some appropriate parameters. In this paper, we prove the existence of the global attractor, and give a complete description on qualitative properties and bifurcations of all equilibria except for some cases of high degeneracy. Moreover, we obtain different kinds of 1-dimensional or 2-dimensional structures of the global attractor, which were not considered in the known work.

Abstract:We propose new results for the existence and uniqueness of a general nonparametric and nonseparable competitive equilibrium with substitutes. These results ensure the invertibility of a general competitive system. The existing literature has focused on the uniqueness of a competitive equilibrium assuming that existence holds. We introduce three properties that our supply system must satisfy: weak substitutes, pivotal substitutes, and responsiveness. These properties are sufficient to ensure the existence of an equilibrium, thus providing the existence counterpart to Berry, Gandhi, and Haile (2013)'s uniqueness results. For two important classes of models, bipartite matching models with full assignment and discrete choice models, we show that both models can be reformulated as a competitive system such that our existence and uniqueness results can be readily applied. We also provide an algorithm to compute the unique competitive equilibrium. Furthermore, we argue that our results are particularly useful for studying imperfectly transferable utility matching models with full assignment and non-additive random utility models.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze a spatial Bertrand oligopoly model called network-city model. Firms compete directly and simultaneously with all other firms. In the model, we allow for heterogeneous product differentiation, heterogeneous constant marginal costs of production, and heterogeneous consumer densities. We show that the equilibrium is unique and easily computable. Our model is more general than the existing spatial models, and more importantly, our model provides a spatial microfoundation for the traditional linear demand functions in a differentiated Bertrand oligopoly.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to study the stationary problem for a Lotka–Volterra competition system with advection under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions . By using global bifurcation theory, we establish the sufficient conditions on terms of the birth rates of two competing species assuring the existence of positive solutions. Moreover, some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of positive solutions are also given. These contrast with the mathematical analyses carried out by Kuto and Tsujikawa (2015) and Wang and Yan (2015), where the corresponding Neumann problem is analyzed.

Abstract:A model of exploitative competition of n species in a chemostat for a single, essential, nonreproducing, growth-limiting resource is considered. S. B. Hsu [SIAM J. Appl. Math., 34 (1978), pp. 760763] applies LaSalles extension theorem of Lyapunov stability theory to study the asymptotic behavior of solutions in the special case that the response functions are modeled by MichaelisMenten dynamics. G. J. Butler and G. S. K. Wolkowicz [SIAM J. Appl. Math., 45 (1985), pp. 138151], on the other hand, allow more general response functions (including monotone and nonmonotone functions), but their analysis requires the assumption that the death rates of all the species are negligible in comparison with the washout rate, and hence can be ignored. By means of Lyapunov stability theory, the global dynamics of the model for a large class of response functions are studied, including both monotone and nonmonotone functions (though it is not as general as the class studied by Butler and Wolkowicz) and the results in Hsu are extended for this class, to the differential death-rate case. That is, it is shown that for this class the outcome depends on the relative sizes of the break-even concentrations. Provided that these concentrations are distinct, at most one competitor population avoids extinction, the one with the lowest break-even concentration. All populations approach limiting values.

Abstract:In this paper we study variations of the standard Hotelling-Downs model of spatial competition, where each agent attracts the clients in a restricted neighborhood, each client randomly picks one attractive agent for service. Two utility functions for agents are considered: support utility and winner utility. We generalize the results by Feldman et al. to the case where the clients are distributed arbitrarily. In the support utility setting, we show that a pure Nash equilibrium always exists by formulating the game as a potential game. In the winner utility setting, we show that there exists a Nash equilibrium in two cases: when there are at most 3 agents and when the size of attraction area is at least half of the entire space. We also consider the price of anarchy and the fairness of equilibria and give tight bounds on these criteria.

Dynamics of a Generalized Beverton-Holt Competition Model Subject to Allee Effects

Abstract:We propose and study {a generalized Beverton-Holt competition model} subject to Allee effects to obtain insights on how the interplay of Allee effects and contest competition affects the persistence and the extinction of two competing species. By using {the theory of monotone dynamics} and the properties of critical curves for non-invertible maps, our analysis shows that our model has simple equilibrium dynamics for most conditions. The coexistence of two competing species occurs only if the system has four interior equilibria.} We provide an {approximation to} the basins of the boundary attractors (i.e., the extinction of one or both species) where our results suggests that {contest species are more prone to extinction than scramble ones are at low densities}. In addition, {in comparison to the} dynamics of two species scramble competition models subject to Allee effects, our study suggests that (i) Both contest and scramble competition models can have only three boundary attractors without the coexistence equilibria, or four attractors among which only one is the {persistent attractor}, {whereas} scramble competition {models} may have the extinction of both species as its only attractor under certain conditions, i.e., \emph{the essential extinction} of two species due to strong Allee effects; (ii) {Scramble competition models like Ricker type models can} have much more complicated dynamical structure of interior attractors than contest ones like Beverton-Holt type models have; and (iii) Scramble competition models {like Ricker type competition models} may be more likely to promote the coexistence of two species at low and high densities under certain conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide sharp criteria of global attraction for a class of non-autonomous reaction–diffusion equations with delay and Neumann conditions. Our methodology is based on a subtle combination of some dynamical system tools and the maximum principle for parabolic equations. It is worth mentioning that our results are achieved under very weak and verifiable conditions. We apply our results to a wide variety of classical models, including the non-autonomous variants of Nicholson's equation or the Mackey–Glass model. In some cases, our technique gives the optimal conditions for the global attraction.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a two-species reaction–diffusion competition model with Gompertz growth, where the intrinsic growth rates and carrying capacities of environments are heterogeneous. At firstly, assuming two competing species only admit different diffusive rates, we show that 'slower diffuser prevails', which is consistent with the well-known result in Dockery J, Hutson V, Mischaikow K, Pernarowski M. [The evolution of slow dispersal rates: a reaction–diffusion model. J Math Biol. 1998;37(1):61–83; Hastings A. Can spatial variation alone lead to selection for dispersal? Theor Popul Biol. 1983;24:244–251]. Then, for the "weak competition" case, we establish a prior estimate, which combined with the theory of monotone dynamical system and spectral analysis implies that the model admits a unique coexistence steady state, which is globally asymptotically stable. Finally, for the "strong–weak competition" case, we give the expression of critical competition intensity and the weak competitor will be wiped out.

Abstract:We characterize the equilibrium behavior in a broad class of competition models in which the competing firms' market shares are given by an attraction model, and the aggregate sales in the industry depend on the aggregate attraction value according to a general function. Each firm's revenues and costs are proportional with its expected sales volume, with a cost rate that depends on the firm's chosen attraction value according to an arbitrary increasing function. Whereas most existing competition papers with attraction models can be viewed as special cases of this general model, we apply our general results to a new set of quality competition models. Here an industry has N suppliers of a given product, who compete for the business of one or more buyers. Each of the suppliers encounters an uncertain yield factor, with a given general yield distribution. The buyers face uncertain demands over the course of a given sales season. The suppliers compete by selecting key characteristics of their yield distributions, either their means, their standard deviations, or both. These choices have implications for their per-unit cost rates.

Abstract:The existence and nonexistence of semi-trivial or coexistence steady-state solutions of one-dimensional competition models in an unstirred chemostat are studied by establishing new results on systems of Hammerstein integral equations via the classical fixed point index theory. We provide three ranges for the two parameters involved in the competition models under which the models have no semi-trivial and coexistence steady-state solutions or have semi-trivial steady-state solutions but no coexistence steady-state solutions or have semi-trivial or coexistence steady-state solutions. It remains open to find the largest range for the two parameters under which the models have only coexistence steady-state solutions. We apply the new results on systems of Hammerstein integral equations to obtain results on steady-state solutions of systems of reaction-diffusion equations with general separated boundary conditions. Such type of results have not been studied in the literature. However, these results are very useful for studying the competition models in an unstirred chemostat. Our results on Hammerstein integral equations and differential equations generalize and improve some previous results.
