Abstract:We report an optical phenomenon that allows perfect quantum communication through a pair of dephasing channels each with zero quantum capacity. Our results are useful for enriching the structure of the quantum communication theory.

Abstract:We investigate the scheme for controlling information characterized by Von-Neumann entropy and the stationary state entanglement characterized by concurrence of two solid state qubits in the collective dephasing channel. It is shown that the local maximal value of the stationary state concurrence always corresponds to the local minimal value of information. We also propose a scheme for remotely controlling the entanglement of two solid state qubits against the collective dephasing. This idea may open a door to remotely suppress the detrimental effects of decoherence.
Interference of short optical pulses from independent gain-switched laser diodes for quantum secure communications

Abstract:Since the introduction of the decoy-state technique, phase-randomised weak coherent light pulses have been the key to increase the practicality of quantum-based communications. Their ultra-fast generation was accomplished via compact gain-switched (GS) lasers, leading to high key rates in quantum key distribution (QKD). Recently, the question arose of whether the same laser could be employed to achieve high-speed measurement-device-independent-QKD, a scheme that promises long-haul quantum communications immune to all detector attacks. For that, a challenging highvisibility interference between independent picosecond optical pulses is required. Here, we answer the above question in the affirmative by demonstrating high-visibility interference from two independent GS lasers triggered at 1GHz. The result is obtained through a careful characterization of the laser frequency chirp and time jitter. By relating these quantities to the interference visibility, we obtain a parameter-free verification of the experimental data and a numerical simulation of the achievable key rates. These findings are beneficial to other applications making use of GS lasers, including random number generation and standard QKD.

General Communication Enhancement via the Quantum Switch

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that quantum information may be effectively transmitted by a finite collection of completely depolarizing channels in a coherent superposition of different orders, via an operation known as the quantum $\tt SWITCH$. Such results are quite remarkable, as completely depolarizing channels taken in isolation and in a definite order can only output white noise. For general channels however, little is known about the potential communication enhancement provided by the quantum $\tt SWITCH$. In this Letter, we define an easily computable quantity $\mathcal{P}_n$ associated with the quantum ${\tt SWITCH}$ of $n$ copies of a fixed channel, and we conjecture that $\mathcal{P}_n>0$ is both a necessary and sufficient condition for communication enhancement via the quantum $\tt SWITCH$. In support of our conjecture, we derive a simple analytic expression for the classical capacity of the quantum $\tt SWITCH$ of $n$ copies of an arbitrary Pauli channel in terms of the quantity $\mathcal{P}_n$, which we then use to show that our conjecture indeed holds in the space of all Pauli channels. Utilizing such results, we then formulate a communication protocol involving the quantum $\tt SWITCH$ which enhances the private capacity of the BB84 channel.

Abstract:Is quantum communication possible over an optical fiber with transmissivity λ≤1/2 ? The answer is well known to be negative if the environment with which the incoming signal interacts is initialized in a thermal state. However, Lami et al. [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 125 , 110504 (2020)] found the quantum capacity to be always bounded away from zero for all λ>0 , a phenomenon dubbed "die-hard quantum communication" (D-HQCOM), provided that the initial environment state can be chosen appropriately, depending on λ . Here we show an even stronger version of D-HQCOM in the context of entanglement-assisted classical communication: entanglement assistance and control of the environment enable communication with performance at least equal to that of the ideal case of absence of noise, even if λ>0 is arbitrarily small. These two phenomena of D-HQCOM have technological potential provided that we are able to control the environment. How can we achieve this? Our second main result answers this question. Here we provide a fully consistent protocol to activate the phenomena of D-HQCOM without directly accessing the environment state. This is done by sending over the channel "trigger signals," i.e., signals which do not encode information, prior to the actual communication, with the goal of modifying the environment in an advantageous way. This is possible due to the memory effects which arise when the sender feeds signals separated by a sufficiently short temporal interval. Our results may offer a concrete scheme to communicate across arbitrarily long optical fibers, without using quantum repeaters. Long-distance quantum communication with atomic ensembles and linear optics

Abstract:Quantum communication holds promise for absolutely secure transmission of secret messages and the faithful transfer of unknown quantum states. Photonic channels appear to be very attractive for the physical implementation of quantum communication. However, owing to losses and decoherence in the channel, the communication fidelity decreases exponentially with the channel length. Here we describe a scheme that allows the implementation of robust quantum communication over long lossy channels. The scheme involves laser manipulation of atomic ensembles, beam splitters, and single-photon detectors with moderate efficiencies, and is therefore compatible with current experimental technology. We show that the communication efficiency scales polynomially with the channel length, and hence the scheme should be operable over very long distances.
Capacity-Achieving Entanglement Purification Protocol for Pauli Dephasing Channel

Abstract:Quantum communication facilitates the secure transmission of information and the distribution of entanglement, but the rates at which these tasks can be achieved are fundamentally constrained by the capacities of quantum channels. Although quantum repeaters typically enhance these rates by mitigating losses and noise, a simple entanglement swapping protocol via a central node is not effective against the Pauli dephasing channel due to the additional degradation introduced by Bell-state measurements. This highlights the importance of purifying distributed Bell states before performing entanglement swapping. In this work, we introduce an entanglement purification protocol assisted by two-way classical communication that not only purifies the states but also achieves the channel capacities. Our protocol uses an iterative process involving CNOT gates and Hadamard basis measurements, progressively increasing the fidelity of Bell states with each iteration. This process ensures that the resulting Bell pairs are perfect in the limit of many recursive iterations, making them ideal for use in quantum repeaters and for correcting dephasing errors in quantum computers. The explicit circuit we propose is versatile and applicable to any number of Bell pairs, offering a practical solution for mitigating decoherence in quantum networks and distributed quantum computing.

Abstract:Quantum optical systems are typically affected by two types of noise: photon loss and dephasing. Despite extensive research on each noise process individually, a comprehensive understanding of their combined effect is still lacking. A crucial problem lies in determining the values of loss and dephasing for which the resulting loss-dephasing channel is anti-degradable, implying the absence of codes capable of correcting its effect or, alternatively, capable of enabling quantum communication. A conjecture in [Quantum 6, 821 (2022)] suggested that the bosonic loss-dephasing channel is anti-degradable if and only if the loss is above $50\%$. In this paper we refute this conjecture, specifically proving that for any value of the loss, if the dephasing is above a critical value, then the bosonic loss-dephasing channel is anti-degradable. While our result identifies a large parameter region where quantum communication is not possible, we also prove that if two-way classical communication is available, then quantum communication -- and thus quantum key distribution -- is always achievable, even for high values of loss and dephasing.

Experimental Demonstration of Robust Bidirectional Quantum Optical Communications

Abstract:We experimentally realized a new method for transmitting quantum information reliably through paired optical polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers. The physical setup extends the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, where noises are canceled through interference. This method can be viewed as an improved version of the current decohernce-free subspace (DFS) approach in fiber optics. Furthermore, the setup can be applied bidirectionally, which means that robust quantum communication can be achieved from both ends. To rigorously quantify the amount of quantum information transferred, optical fibers are analyzed with the tools developed in quantum communication theory. These results not only suggests a practical means for protecting classical and quantum information through optical fibers, but also provides a new physical platform for enriching the structure of the quantum communication theory.
Exact solution for the quantum and private capacities of bosonic dephasing channels

Abstract:The capacities of noisy quantum channels capture the ultimate rates of information transmission across quantum communication lines, and the quantum capacity plays a key role in determining the overhead of fault-tolerant quantum computation platforms. In the case of bosonic systems, central to many applications, no closed formulas for these capacities were known for bosonic dephasing channels, a key class of non-Gaussian channels modelling, e.g., noise affecting superconducting circuits or fiber-optic communication channels. Here we provide the first exact calculation of the quantum, private, two-way assisted quantum, and secret-key agreement capacities of all bosonic dephasing channels. We prove that that they are equal to the relative entropy of the distribution underlying the channel to the uniform distribution. Our result solves a problem that has been open for over a decade, having been posed originally by [Jiang & Chen, Quantum and Nonlinear Optics 244, 2010].

Abstract:Quantum interference plays an essential role in understanding the concepts of quantum physics. Moreover, the interference of photons is indispensable for large-scale quantum information processing. With the development of quantum networks, interference of photons transmitted through long-distance fiber channels has been widely implemented. However, quantum interference of photons using free-space channels is still scarce, mainly due to atmospheric turbulence. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with photons transmitted by free-space channels. Two typical photon sources, i.e., correlated photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process and weak coherent states, are employed. A visibility of 0.744 ± 0.013 is observed by interfering with two photons generated in the SPDC process, exceeding the classical limit of 0.5. Our results demonstrate that the quantum property of photons remains even after transmission through unstable free-space channels, indicating the feasibility and potential application of free-space-based quantum interference in quantum information processing.

Abstract:Optical fibers are widely used as one of the main tools for transmitting not only classical but also quantum information. We propose and report an experimental realization of a promising method for creating robust bidirectional quantum communication links through paired optical polarization-maintaining fibers. Many limitations of existing protocols can be avoided with the proposed method. In particular, the path and polarization degrees of freedom are combined to deterministically create a photonic decoherence-free subspace without the need for any ancillary photon. This method is input state-independent, robust against dephasing noise, postselection-free, and applicable bidirectionally. To rigorously quantify the amount of quantum information transferred, the optical fibers are analyzed with the tools developed in quantum communication theory. These results not only suggest a practical means for protecting quantum information sent through optical quantum networks but also potentially provide a new physical platform for enriching the structure of the quantum communication theory.
Exact quantum sensing limits for bosonic dephasing channels

Abstract:Dephasing is a prominent noise mechanism that afflicts quantum information carriers, and it is one of the main challenges towards realizing useful quantum computation, communication, and sensing. Here we consider discrimination and estimation of bosonic dephasing channels, when using the most general adaptive strategies allowed by quantum mechanics. We reduce these difficult quantum problems to simple classical ones based on the probability densities defining the bosonic dephasing channels. By doing so, we rigorously establish the optimal performance of various distinguishability and estimation tasks and construct explicit strategies to achieve this performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a non-Gaussian bosonic channel for which there are exact solutions for these tasks.

Abstract:We present an experimental approach to construct a dephrasure channel that contains both dephasing and erasure noises and can be used as an efficient tool to study the superadditivity of coherent information. Using a three-fold dephrasure channel, the superadditivity of coherent information is observed, and a substantial gap is found between the zero single-letter coherent information and zero quantum capacity. Particularly, we find that, when the coherent information of n channel uses is zero, with a larger number of channel uses the quantum capacity becomes positive. These phenomena exhibit a more obvious superadditivity of coherent information than previous works and demonstrate a higher threshold for nonzero quantum capacity. Such novel channels built in our experiment also can provide a useful platform to study the nonadditive properties of coherent information and quantum channel capacity.

Abstract:We present an experimental realization of a robust quantum communicationscheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 220501 (2004)] using pairs of photons entangled inpolarization and time. Our method overcomes errors due to collective rotationof the polarization modes (e.g., birefringence in optical fiber ormisalignment), is insensitive to the phase's fluctuation of the interferometer,and does not require any shared reference frame including time reference,except the need to label different photons. The practical robustness of thescheme is further shown by implementing a variation of the Bennett-Brassard1984 quantum key distribution protocol over 1 km optical fiber.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of quantum interference in atom-field systems via dephasing, which can be precisely and selectively controlled by phase-diffusion induced dephasing of interacting fields. The continuous control of quantum interference from destructive interference (suppression of absorption) to constructive interference (enhancement of absorption) can be obtained by changing the dephasing rate. Our work highlights the key role of dephasing in intentionally manipulation of quantum interference for tunable delay and storage of broadband pulses.

Abstract:Intuition from our everyday lives gives rise to the belief that information exchanged between remote parties is carried by physical particles. Surprisingly, in a recent theoretical study [Salih H, Li ZH, Al-Amri M, Zubairy MS (2013) Phys Rev Lett 110:170502], quantum mechanics was found to allow for communication, even without the actual transmission of physical particles. From the viewpoint of communication, this mystery stems from a (nonintuitive) fundamental concept in quantum mechanics-wave-particle duality. All particles can be described fully by wave functions. To determine whether light appears in a channel, one refers to the amplitude of its wave function. However, in counterfactual communication, information is carried by the phase part of the wave function. Using a single-photon source, we experimentally demonstrate the counterfactual communication and successfully transfer a monochrome bitmap from one location to another by using a nested version of the quantum Zeno effect.
The Experimental Demonstration of High Efficiency Interaction-free Measurement for Quantum Counterfactual-like Communication

Abstract:We present an interaction-free measurement with quantum Zeno effect and a high efficiency η = 74.6% ± 0.15%. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, this measurement can be used to implement a quantum counterfactual-like communication protocol. Instead of a single photon state, we use a coherent light as the input source and show that the output agrees with the proposed quantum counterfactual communication protocol according to Salih et al . Although the counterfactuality is not achieved due to the presence of a few photons in the public channel, we show that the signal light is nearly absent in the public channel, which exhibits a proof-of-principle quantum counterfactual-like property of communication.
Irreversible encoding on high-dimensional entanglement improves quantum communication

Abstract:Shared entanglement can significantly amplify classical correlations between systems interacting over a limited quantum channel. A natural avenue is to use entanglement of the same dimension as the channel because this allows for unitary encodings, which preserve global coherence until a measurement is performed. Contrasting this, we here demonstrate a distributed task based on a qubit channel, for which irreversible encoding operations can outperform any possible coherence-preserving protocol. This corresponds to using high-dimensional entanglement and encoding information by compressing one of the subsystems into a qubit. Demonstrating this phenomenon requires the preparation of a four-dimensional maximally entangled state, the compression of two qubits into one and joint qubit-ququart entangled measurements, with all modules executed at near-optimal fidelity. We report on a proof-of-principle experiment that achieves the advantage by realizing separate systems in distinct and independently controlled paths of a single photon. Our result demonstrates the relevance of high-dimensional entanglement and non-unitary operations for enhancing the communication capabilities of standard qubit transmissions.

High Capacity Noisy Unruh--DeWitt Quantum Channels with Bosonic Dephasing

Abstract:Unruh--DeWitt (UDW) detectors implemented as UDW quantum gates provide a framework for evaluating quantum Shannon theory properties of qubit-field systems. UDW quantum channels consist of qubits encoding/decoding quantum information onto/off of quantum fields. With the controlled unitary structure of UDW gates, the encoding/decoding process happens on the diagonals of the coherent state density matrix describing the field. However, given the non-orthogonality of coherent states the output of UDW channels consists of unwanted states and unwanted mixing of states that lower the channel capacity. In idealized models, these appear in the off-diagonals and diagonals of the field's density matrix in the coherent state basis. For this reason, we show that UDW quantum channels have an unexpected representation as certain bosonic dephasing channels with dephasing parameters captured by a combination of the coupling, smearing, and switching functions of the UDW detector model. We demonstrate the unexpected consequence that a larger dephasing parameter results in higher channel capacity and helps alleviate unwanted state mixing. We illustrate these properties through two examples: inserting an additional ideal dephasing channel into the quantum channel and inserting cross-talk noise via a third UDW gate. Remarkably, the cross-talk noise channel qualitatively improves a lower bound on the quantum capacity suggesting UDW gates will have unexpected performance improvements if realized in condensed matter experiments.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for secure information processing and communications. The canonical optical quantum information processing encodes a single qubit per photon, with remarkable demonstrations of secure quantum communications, linear optical quantum computing amongst others. Often the polarization qubit, a discrete variable with entangled Bell states, is used. Continuous variables such as energy-time modes and spatial modes, however, present a dramatically larger Hilbert space for quantum information processing. The high-dimensional entanglement capture more qubits per photon, enabling dramatically higher secure key rates over longer distances and with better error resilience. Here I will describe our results on high-dimensional entanglement in quantum frequency combs for dense quantum communications. We first demonstrate revival of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences, long postulated by theorists more than a decade ago, up to 19-dimensions and with visibilities up to 96.5%. The mode-locked two-photon state in high-dimensions is further witnessed through a stabilized Franson interferometer, as a generalized Bell’s inequality test and hyperentangled through multiple degrees-of-freedom. Entanglement revivals of the non-local interference at discrete time-bins are uncovered, up to 97.8% visibility, as a fundamental resource for dense secure information processing.
