Abstract:Developing efficient filtering materials, with both high permeation flux and rejection, by a low-cost and facile way, for oil/water separation has been the goal that mankind pursues. In this paper, we report a porous poly(melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) sponge with superwettability and controlled pore size obtained simply, by introducing hydrophilic fibers, i.e. cellulose fibers. Driven by concentration or pressure difference, the fibers diffuse into the sponge body, and the pore size of the sponge can be regulated by changing only the fiber content. These hydrophilic fibers endow the sponge with inherent superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. The resulting modified sponges, with varied pore sizes, can effectively separate a wide range of oil/water mixtures (including layered oil/water mixtures, surfactant-free oil/water emulsion and the surfactant-stabilized emulsion) solely by gravity, with high permeation flux and satisfactory oil rejection. It is expected that such a facile way will provide a low-cost and easily scaled-up method to construct a series of filtering materials for highly efficient separation of target oil/water mixtures.

Abstract:Abstract The treatment of a large amount of oil-water mixture generated by oil leakage accidents is an environmental issue that cannot be ignored. Achieving fast and efficient oil-water separation is a goal pursued by both academia and industry. In this paper, poly(melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) sponges were modified by the hydrophilic bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) through mild and facile conditions. With increasing the concentration of BNC dispersion used, the pore size of the composite decreases. The water contact angle of the obtained PMF/BNC composite surface is 0° or so, and the underwater oil contact angle is greater than 150°. Based on its hierarchical pore structure, hydrophilicity and oil repellency, the PMF/BNC composite exhibits excellent oil-water separation efficiency and water treatment flux for layered oil-water mixture (>1.0×107L/(m2·h·bar)). In addition, the PMF/BNC composite also exhibits high water treatment flux and oil-water separation efficiency (> 95%) for oil-water emulsion with and without surfactant. Stacking several composite slices could achieve higher oil-water separation efficiency.
Designing MOFs/CuCo-LDHs Hybrid-Based Superhydrophobic Sponge for Speedy Eliminating Microplastics, Dyes, and Oils from High-Salinity Water

Abstract:It is urgent to develop effective materials to decontaminate wastewater owing to water scarcity in the whole world. In this study, we successfully fabricated a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic MOFs/LDHs based-functional sponge (OMCTS/ZIF-67/CuCo-LDHs@Sponge) with large specific surface area and high porosity for the first time through a two-step co-precipitation method and surface modification of polysiloxane. The polydopamine (PDA) molecules not only greatly improved the adhesion between coatings and substrate, but also enhanced growth of MOFs and LDHs structure. The in-situ growth of hexahedron ZIF-67 particles on multiple layered CuCo-LDHs sphere formed heterojunction, which significantly increased adsorption sites, specific area, and porosity and also solved the aggregation problem of powder MOFs. The CuCo-LDHs with large surface area was beneficial to ZIF-67 growth owing to same Co2+connection. The developed superhydrophobic sponge not only quickly and selectively absorbed various microplastics (MPs, as high as 500mg/mL), dyes (C0 = 40mg/L, removal rate of 99.6%), and emulsified oils from high-salinity water with high capacity (e.g. 85mg/g for PP-2000, 94mg/g for PS-100, and 93mg/g for PE-2000), but also exhibited outstanding synchronous decontamination capability for coexisting pollutants through multi-molecular synergistic mechanism and multiple adsorption forces (grasping force, strong capillarity, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonds, π-π interactions, p-π conjugation interaction. Van der Waals forces). The coated sponge showed superior mechanical durability, which still maintained separation ability above 98% after repeated adsorption of MPs for 40 cycles. The adsorption mechanism was detailly investigated through theoretical simulation of adsorption energy. This coated sponge was destined to show broad and useful applications in water purification field.
Fabrication of a Novel Superhydrophobic and Superoleophilic Surface by One-Step Electrodeposition Method for Continuous Oil/water Separation

Abstract:A novel superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface was fabricated by one-step electrodeposition on stainless steel meshes, and the durability and oil/water separation properties were assessed. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and optical contact angle measurements were used to characterize surface morphologies, chemical compositions, and wettabilities, respectively. The results indicated that the as-prepared mesh preformed excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162 +/- 1 degrees and oil contact angle of (OCA) 0 degrees. Meanwhile, the as-prepared mesh also exhibited continuous separation capacity of many kinds of oil/water mixtures, and the separation efficiency for lubrication oil/water mixture was about 98.6%. In addition, after 10 separation cycles, the as-prepared mesh possessed the WCAs of 155 +/- 2 degrees, the OCAs of 0 degrees and the separation efficiency of 97.8% for lubrication oil/water mixtures. The as-prepared mesh also retained superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties after abrading, immersing in salt solutions and different pH solutions. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Effective removal of oils and leakage chemicals from water is of significance in oceanography, environmental protection, and industrial production. Materials that can reduce environmental pollution are in high demand. Herein, we have developed a facile synthesis of ultralight, high-hydrophobic, and superoleophilic sponges (UHS sponges) through a dip adsorbing process based on lignin and commercially available melamine sponges. The obtained UHS sponges consist of an interconnected structure with high porosity and ultralow density (6.4 mg cm(-3)). As the hydrophobic carbon coating of the skeleton and its microstructure trapping the air, the UHS sponge exhibits high-hydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, which are beneficial to its applications in oil water separation. Besides lignin, other biomass like tannin is also suitable as the modification agent to prepare UHS sponges via a dip adsorbing method. As a result, this novel sponge exhibits excellent oil/water separation performance such as high selectivity, good recyclability, and oil absorption capacities up to 217 times of its own weight or 99 vol % of its own volume. We believe that this dip adsorbing method resultant sponge is highly promising as an ideal oil absorbent in oil spill recovery and environmental protection.
Non-fluorinated lignin-based melamine sponges with superhydrophobic and photothermal properties for multi-functional applications

Abstract:Frequent oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewaters become a significant threat to the environment and ecosystem. Herein, a non-fluorinated lignin-based melamine sponge with superhydrophobic and photothermal properties (labeled as MS@COF/LPs/PDMS) has been achieved by decorating with covalent organic framework (COF), lignin particles (LPs) and PDMS. The MS@COF/LPs/PDMS shows excellent surface superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 152.3° and a sliding angle of 6°. The adsorption capacities of the MS@COF/LPs/PDMS range from 38.4 g/g to 100.3 g/g for various oils and organic solvents, and the separation efficiency of the MS@COF/LPs/PDMS for CCl4 reaches 99.7 %. Furthermore, the maximum surface temperature of the MS@COF/LPs/PDMS reaches 61.2 °C because of the thermal vibration of LPs and COF under solar irradiation (1.0 kW/m2). Surprisingly, the MS@COF/LPs/PDMS can rapidly adsorb a droplet of crude oils within 32 s due to the superoleophilicity and excellent photothermal effect. Besides, the melting time of the MS@COF/LPs/PDMS (400 s) reduces by 70 % for an ice droplet under solar irradiation than that of pristine melamine sponge (1330 s). Thus, this study provides new insights into the rational design of low-cost lignin-based melamine sponges for the applications of oil/water separation, crude oil recovery, and de-icing.

Abstract:The manufacturing techniques of superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials typically involve complicated processes. To address the issue, tannic acid, 3–aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane were used as primary ingredients to construct 3D superhydrophobic/superoleophilic melamine sponges by a facile one–step biomimetic method. The surface morphologies and functional composition of the modified 3D melamine sponges were characterized by scanning electron microscope , energy dispersive spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The wetting performance of the modified 3D melamine sponge was estimated by measuring the water contact angle and oil contact angle. The water and oil contact angle were determined to be 155.4° and 0°, suggesting that the modified sponge showed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic performance. The modified sponge also presented remarkable self-cleaning and antifouling performance. As a result of porous skeleton and resilience of the melamine sponge, the superhydrophobic/superoleophilic sponge possessed outstanding oil absorption capacity and recycling durability. The modified sponge exhibited absorption capacities ranging from 38.43 g/g to 194.62 g/g for the chosen absorbents. The recycling absorption capacity for diesel and chloroform remained at 94.32% and 97.76% of their initial absorption capacity after 20 cycles. In addition, the modified sponge could also be used to separate oil and water continuously. The continuous separation efficiency for the mixture of diesel/water and chloroform/water could reach 98.52% and 99.42%, respectively. Therefore, the modified sponge shows considerable potential for practical application in oil/water separation.

Abstract:In the ever-growing environmental concerns caused by crude oil spills and solvent discharges, our study pioneered an ingenious approach to fabricate superhydrophobic melamine formaldehyde (HMF) materials through in situ anchoring of a porous hyper-cross-linked polymer (HCP) and achieved stable integration of HCP on the MF surface by covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds instead of traditional adhesives. The resulting composite material exhibits exceptional performance with an oil adsorption capacity of 130 mL/g, a filtration/separation efficiency exceeding 99%, and remarkable environmental resistance and recyclability. The robust interfacial strength and high degree of cross-linking porous HCP facilitate tailorable design and easy adjustment of pore structures and ensure repeated use through simple squeezing. Notably, the hydrophobicity and porous structure of the sponge can be conveniently regulated by controlling the deposition amount of HCP, realizing a high adsorption capacity and/or efficient emulsion separation on demand. This study not only contributes to the advancement of wettability materials but also presents an efficient, versatile, and convenient method and toolbox to address diverse oil/water separation challenges, paving the way for sustainable environmental solutions and marking a significant stride toward a cleaner future.

Abstract:In this study, an eco-friendly aqueous solution-dipping method was developed for the synthesis of an ultrastable superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS). The MS exhibits not only a high oil adsorption capacity of 46.3–149.5 times of its own weight, but also a good reusability with a slight decrease in adsorption capacity after 20 absorption-desorption cycles. Moreover, the continuous separation of immiscible oils/organic solvents and water with vacuum assistance is also realized. Besides, the material also features with exceptional physicochemical stability and fire-retardant performance, enabling its potential applications in extreme environments (high temperature, strong wind and waves, strong acids and alkalis, UV radiation, etc.). The as-established synthesis pathway has its chance in simplifying the industrial fabrication processes of composited functional sponges.

Abstract:Recyclable, non-toxic, and degradable biological substrates contribute significantly to super-wetting surfaces. In this work, we prepared magnetic micro-nano super-hydrophobic surfaces through a robust solution with magnetic modified lignin particles as the supporting structure. A novel PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/magnetic lignin particle (lignin@Fe3O4)/PDA sponge composite was fabricated. Through dopamine (DA) self-polymerization, covalent deposition of magnetic lignin (ML), and PDMS silane modification, the magnetic super-hydrophobic polyurethane sponge composite (Sponge-P) was synthesized so that the Fe3O4 nanoscale microspheres wrapped with microscale lignin magnetic particles adhered to the sponge surface tighter and were barely dislodged. The as-prepared Sponge-P displayed excellent flexibility and a water contact angle of up to 152.2°. The super-hydrophobic sponge prepared with the proposed method was acid-base stable (pH = 2-12), self-cleaning, and suitable for high-salinity seawater. The magnetic super-hydrophobic sponge has good oil-water separation ability and can absorb 43 times its own weight of oil. In the meantime, due to the introduction of magnetic materials into lignin, we not only constructed micro-nanostructures to improve the surface super-hydrophobicity, but also made Sponge-P have the function of magnetic recovery, which has a unique advantage in treating oily wastewater.

Abstract:To address the high-cost hydrophobic modification of three dimensional commercial sponges, here natural cellulose nanocrystcals (CNCs) were employed to prepare ultralight, robustly compressible and super-hydrophobic biomass-decorated carbonaceous melamine (BCM) sponges by a facile immersing-adsorption-pyrolysis method. Due to the introduction of CNCs, originally pyrolyzed melamine sponges with super-hydrophilicity were changed into the ultralight BCM sponge (7.3 mg cm(-3)) with super-hydrophobicity and excellent mechanical property. Being applied to the oil/water separation, BCM sponges showed good oil selectivity, high oil absorption capacities up to 201 g/g or 94% of its own volume, and even high oil retention. Simultaneously, the excellent compressibility and good flame retardancy of BCM sponges ensured that the absorbed oil can be recovered by combustion and squeezing methods. Based on super-hydrophobicity, good flexibility and high porosity of BCM sponges, the spilled oils could be also consecutively collected from water surface to collecting vessels by our designed oil collection apparatus.
Silk Fibroin-Graphene Oxide Functionalized Melamine Sponge for Efficient Oil Absorption and Oil/water Separation

Abstract:Various oil and organic solvent spill accidents have resulted in severe environmental issues. Thus, hydrophobic sorbents have drawn much attention for oil spill cleanup. An oil/water separation material with robust mechanical properties was developed by modifying melamine sponge with silk fibroin-graphene oxide (SGMS). Here, silk fibroin was used as a molecular binder to combine graphene oxide and the melamine sponge. After modification, the surface of the sponge became hydrophobic. The SGMS exhibited excellent oil adsorption capacity (up to 76 times its own weight), efficient oil-water separation, good mechanical properties (100 cycles), and superior recyclability (50 times). Moreover, SGMS can be used in the separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions with excellent separation efficiency and for the continuous separation of oil/water in a pumping state. These excellent properties indicate that SGMS can be industrially produced and is suitable for the adsorption of organic pollutants under realistic conditions.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic and oleophilic sponges have been demonstrated as promising candidates for oil/water separation. However, there are still challenges in large-scale fabrication of superhydrophobic sponges with low cost and feasible method for industrial applications. Herein, we report a superhydrophobic and oleophilic melamine sponge functionalized by a uniform polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film that can be easily coated onto the sponge skeleton through UV-assisted thiol-ene click reactions. The PDMS films are characterized by a hierarchically striped microstructure with an average distance less than 2 μm. Because of the striped microstructure and the hydrophobic property of silicone, a high contact angle of 156.2° was achieved. Importantly, the interconnected open-cell structure of the melamine sponge was preserved by adapting the thickness of the PDMS film. The PDMS-coated melamine sponge exhibited a desirable absorption capacity of 103-179 times its own weight with oils and organic solvents. The excellent mechanical properties of melamine and the flexibility of PDMS enable the PDMS-coated melamine sponges to be squeezed repeatedly without collapsing. This study offers a robust and effective approach in large-scale preparation of a superhydrophobic sponge for large-scale oil spill containment and environmental remediation by the inexpensive commercial polymethylvinylsilicone and facile dip-coating/UV-curing method.
Facile Preparation of Photothermal Superhydrophobic Melamine Sponge Decorated with MXene and Lignin Particles for Efficient Oil/Water Separation, Fast Crude Oil Recovery, and Active Deicing

Abstract:Frequent oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewaters have caused a serious threat to the environment, ecosystems, and human beings. Herein, a photothermal and superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS) decorated with MXene and lignin particles has been prepared for the separation of oil/water mixtures, the recovery of crude oils, and active deicing. The obtained superhydrophobic melamine sponge shows a water contact angle (WCA) of 152.3° and an oil contact angle of ∼0° and possesses good chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in various liquids (i.e., corrosive solutions, organic solvents, and boiling water) and being abrased by sandpapers. This superhydrophobic MS displays a high oil adsorption capacity of CCl<sub>4</sub>, up to 91.6 times its own weight and a high separation efficiency of 99.4%. Furthermore, the maximum surface temperature of the superhydrophobic MS reaches 57.5 °C under sunlight irradiation (1.0 kW/m<sup>2</sup>) due to the excellent photothermal heating conversion performance of MXene and lignin particles. When exposed to sunlight, the superhydrophobic MS can quickly absorb viscous crude oils up to 72 times its own weight. Also, the WCA of the superhydrophobic MS remains above 146° after 50 icing/deicing cycles, showing excellent photothermal anti-icing properties. Thus, this study presents an easy and low-cost method for designing photothermal superhydrophobic melamine sponges and opens a new avenue to the applications of efficient oil/water separation, fast crude oil recovery, and active deicing.

Abstract:Oil/water separation has become an increasingly important field due to frequent industrial oily wastewater emission and crude oil spill accidents. Herein, we fabricate a robust superhydrophobic loofah sponge via a versatile, environmentally friendly, and low-cost dip coating strategy, which involves the modification of commercial loofah sponge with waterborne polyurea and fused SiO2 nanoparticles without the modification of any toxic low-surface-energy compound. The as-prepared loofah sponge showed excellent superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties and exhibited robustness for effective oil-water separation in extremely harsh environments (such as 1 M HCl, 1 M NaOH, saturated NaCl solution and hot water higher than 95 °C) due to the remarkably high chemical stability. In addition, the as-prepared loofah sponge was capable of excellent anti-fouling, has self-cleaning ability and could act as the absorber for effective separation of surfactant-free oil-in-water emulsions. More importantly, the as-prepared loofah sponge demonstrated remarkable robustness against strong sandpaper abrasion and finger wipes, while retaining its superhydrophobicity and efficient oil/water separation efficiency even after more than 50 abrasion cycles. This facile and green synthesis approach presented here has the advantage of large-scale fabrication of a multifunctional biomass-based adsorbent material as a promising candidate in anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and versatile water-oil separation.

Abstract:The utilization of lignin in material fabrication has garnered significant attention, although the complex structure greatly limits its applications. This paper reports a green method for grading and modifying lignin to prepare stable hydrophobic coatings via the solvent/anti-solvent (ethanol/water) self-assembly method. Firstly, the formic acid lignin particle (FLP) is prepared and the primarily underlying mechanism is primarily ascribed to the hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions among aromatic groups within and between molecules, and hydrophobic interactions. The lignin nanoparticles were utilized to chelate with metal ions (iron) in order to obtain the stable hydrophobic coatings using the special nanostructures of FLP. This hydrophobic coating could be applied to different substrates (blocks, straw and fabric). The cotton fabric exhibited an initial water contact angle (WCA) that increased from 73.4° to 129.6°, and excellent chemical and physics hydrophobic performance. Moreover, this coating has strong self-cleaning ability and could be used for oil-water separation. In this newly proposed fabrication, the ethanol can be recovered in the preparation of lignin nanoparticles, which makes the green and facile preparation of a stable hydrophobic coating possible. Additionally, this work is extremely significant to upgrade formic acid lignin into value-added hydrophobic materials via green classifying controlled by the polarity.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic oil-water separation substrates with low cost, high quality and highly efficient performance are desirable in practical fields; however, utilizing the synergistic chemistry of intrinsic molecular characters of lignin (HTL) and dopamine (DA) was rarely reported, even both of which extensively studied for fabricating varied functional materials. Here, inspired by mussel chemistry, superhydrophobic melamine foam (MF) composites with stable micro-islands projections were constructed () by free radical addition of dopamine (DA) and hydrothermal extraction of β-O-4 bond-rich lignin (HTL) as a primer and installation of an auxiliary coating silicon coating (SC). In a certain area, MF formed porous network channels supplying space for oil absorption, while the slender MF fiber acted as a "temporary antenna" to adsorb the wee oil droplets in oily wastewater, ensuring efficient oil/water separation for oil/water mixture (98% after 10 cycles) and achieving strong adsorption capacity (57.48–147.33 g/g). Several technology-model-supported experiments presented that the superhydrophobic material with micro-island projections maintained greatly mechanical stability and apparent contact angle considerable to withstand 10 friction and tape stripping cycles. Even being treated by different pH environments, as-designed superhydrophobic surface still maintained a water contact angle beyond 150°, favorably confirming its acid and alkali resistance under testing conditions.

Abstract:Inspired by the development of smart oil/water separation materials, a pH responsive melamine sponge has been obtained by grafting poly (4-vinylpyridine) on the skeleton surface through atom transfer radical polymerization. Through scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the successful grafting of poly (4-vinylprridine) onto the melamine sponge has been confirmed. When contacting with different pH water droplets in air, the as-prepared product shows excellent switchable wettability between super- hydrophilicity (0 degrees.) and highly hydrophobicity (135 degrees.). Meanwhile, this responsive sponge also exhibits super- hydrophilic/oleophobic property underwater at pH = 1.0, and highly hydrophobic/super-oleophilic property in neutral solution at pH = 7.0. Furthermore, the excellent responsiveness is remained after five cycle water contact angle tests between two different pH stages at pH 1.0 and 7.0. The modified melamine sponges could not only absorb the oil from the oily water at pH = 7.0, but also quickly release the absorbed oil underwater at pH = 1.0 without leaving any residues and hurting the environment nearly, showing a good potential in controlled oil/water separation and oil recovery. Abstract:The preparation of conventional superhydrophobic sponges inevitably requires the involvement of noxious and non-degradable raw materials,thus threatening ecosystems. As reported herein, an environmentally friendly and superhydrophobic melamine sponge is facilely prepared for efficient oil-water separation, which is completely derived from eco-friendly substances. The formation of a hierarchical structure on the sponge skeleton was achieved via the in-situ controllable growth of polydopamine nanoparticles in mildly alkaline solution. In addition, octadecyl amines (ODA) with long chains of hydrophobic alkyl groups were grafted onto the polydopamine coating to reduce the surface energy through Schiff base or Michael addition reactions. Ultimately, the resulted sponge possessed extreme water repellency with a water contact angle (WCA) of 153.21 ± 1.31° and could retain its superhydrophobicity when it was exposed to solutions with different pH values and high temperature. Moreover, the resultant sponge exhibited fully reversible compressibility with up to 80 % strain and excellent structural stability after 200 cyclic compression tests. Meanwhile, distinct organic liquid absorption experiments were conducted to confirm the resulted sponge with excellent oil absorption capacity (73.46–119.66 g/g) and oil-water separation properties. Therefore, the as-prepared superhydrophobic sponge provides valuable insight into efficient oil-water separation.
