Abstract:Two novel thieno[ 3,2-b] thiophene (TT)/3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-based compounds of 2,5( EDOT-TT-EDOT) type bearing electron-withdrawing side groups (4-cyanophenyl or 4-pyridyl) at 3,6-positions of the TT moiety have been synthesized. Their electropolymerization leads to electroactive conjugated polymers, P(CNPh-ETTE) and P(Py-ETTE), which possess electrochromic properties changing the color from purple to pale grey-blue or from sand brown to pale grey-green, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical experiments reveal that functionalization with electron-withdrawing side groups decreases the HOMO and LUMO energy levels and contracts the band gap of materials. Both new polymers demonstrated extremely short response times of 0.9-1.1 s for bleaching and 0.34-0.35 s for coloring. P(CNPh-ETTE) and P(Py-ETTE) polymers showed reasonably good contrast (16-23%) and coloration efficiency (120-190 cm(2) C-1) in the visible region (at the maxima of their pi-pi* transitions, 540/570 nm), and high contrast and coloration efficiency in the near-infrared region (50-62% and 324-440 cm(2) C-1 at 1500 nm, respectively). While the stability of the pyridine-functionalized polymer, P(Py-ETTE), was shown to be low (with unstable charge-discharge characteristics, presumably due to the protonation of the pyridine ring during the redox process), P(CNPh-ETTE) demonstrated superior electrochromic performance retaining 91-96% of its electroactivity after 2000 cycles between -0.5 and +1.0 V. DFT calculations on these and related EDOT-TT-EDOT polymers reported by us early have been presented and analyzed to understand the structure-property relationships in this class of electrochromic polymers.

Abstract:Developing novel donor-acceptor conjugated polymers is essential to obtain desirable electrochromic properties. Herein, naphthobisthiadiazole, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline as electron-deficient units, along with ProDOT-Me2 as an electron-rich block, to create novel donor-acceptor (D-A) type electrochromic polymers (pQWL, pBt and pDBt) for the investigation. The electrochemical/spectroelectrochemistry/colorimetry properties-structure of the ProDOT-Me2-based D-A polymers were systematically investigated. Benefiting from ProDOT-Me2 as an available donor block and matching electron-accepting units for the construction of D-A structures, pQWL and pDBt exhibited blue/green-to-transmissive with excellent electrochromic properties. The pQWL and pDBt exhibited remarkable bifunctional characteristics with reversible colors-to-high transmissive states, shorter switching times, long-term stability, good color memory, excellent coloration efficiency, low color chromaticity in the oxidation state, and large area-specific capacitance. These findings highlight the significant potential of ProDOT-Me2-based D-A polymers as versatile building units for polymer electrochromic-supercapacitor bifunctional materials.

Abstract:Three star-shaped thiophene derivatives, namely TPAT, PHT and TPTT with different central cores of triphenylamine, phenyl and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine respectively, were synthesized and characterized. They were further successfully prepared into the corresponding cross-linked polymers pTPAT, pPHT and pTPTT via electrochemical polymerization. The cyclic voltammetry curves showed that pPHT and pTPTT displayed the relatively higher onset oxidative potentials than pTPAT. After being applied with the positive voltages in an electrochemical cell, pTPAT exhibited the obvious electrochromic behaviors, while such phenomenons were not observed in the case of pPHT and pTPTT. The theory calculation results together with the electrochemistry properties revealed that the electrochromism of pTPAT may mainly depend on its relatively lower oxidative potential because of the introduction of triphenylamine with low ionization energy. Through the copolymerization with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) which is also of relatively low ionization energy, pPHT-EDOT and pTPTT-EDOT both exhibited excellent electrochromic properties. Molecular engineering tuning optoelectronic properties of thieno[3,2- b ]thiophenes-based electrochromic polymers

Abstract:Thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene (TT) monomers end-capped with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) moieties are electropolymerized to form π-conjugated polymers with distinct electrochromic (EC) properties. Steric and electronic factors (electron donor and acceptor substituents) in the side groups of the TT core, as well as the structure of the polymer backbone strongly affect the electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers and their electrochromic characteristics. The studied polymers show low oxidation potentials, tunable from–0.78 to +0.30 V (vs. Fc/Fc + ) and the band gaps from 1.46 to 1.92 eV and demonstrate wide variety of color palettes in polymer films in different states, finely tunable by structural variations in the polymer backbone and the side chains. EC materials of different colors in their doped/dedoped states have been developed (violet, deep blue, light blue, green, brown, purple-red, pinkish-red, orange-red, light gray, cyan and colorless transparent). High optical contrast (up to 79%), short response time (0.57–0.80 s), good cycling stability (up to 91% at 2000 cycles) and high coloration efficiency (up to 234.6 cm 2 C –1 ) have been demonstrated and the influence of different factors on the above parameters of EC polymers have been discussed.
Highly transmissive blue electrochromic polymers based on thieno[3,2-b]thiophene

Abstract:A series of three polymers based on a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene core is synthesized and polymerized via electrochemical polymerization. The addition of benzene and thiophene rings as two different types of substituents on the 3,6-position of the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene core brings about a variance in color changing, optical contrast and morphological demeanor. Electrochromical studies demonstrate that P1 and P2 switch between deep blue neutral and colorless transparent oxidized states, while P3 switches between violet and light green transmissive states. Amid the three polymers, P1 shows the highest optical contrast (71%) in the visible region with complete coloring and bleaching in just 1.10 s and 1.80 s, respectively. In addition, all three polymers reveal about 60% of the transmittance change in the near-IR region, which endows them with commendable applications in NIR electrochromic devices. AFM images depict an augmented surface roughness due to the introduction of alkyl chains in the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene core, which gives rise to a better stability of the polymer thin film. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Abstract:Two monomers named 5-(10-(thiophen-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl)-2,2′-bithiophene (TABT) and 9,10-di([2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)anthracene (DBTA) were sy\nthesized via Stille coupling reaction. Electrochemical polymerization for preparation of their homopolymers was failed in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) and acetonitrile (ACN) systems. However, the copolymers of these compounds with thiophene (Th) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) were synthesized and coated onto indium tin oxide (ITO) surface via low-potential electrochemical polymerization in BFEE. Structural and morphological characterizations of these prepared copolymers were taken by FT-IR, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Additionally, spectroelectrochemical and electrochromic properties of these copolymers were also investigated, red-shift effect can be observed on the absorption spectra of the neutral copolymers via substituting EDOT for thiophene as the comonomers and the increase of anthracene content in the copolymer backbone. Switching and electrochemical measurements indicate the prepared copolymers present fast switching rate and good stability.
Electropolymerized Thiophene-Based Polymer with Pure Donor System Enable Magenta-to-transmissive Electrochromic-Supercapacitor Bifunctional Material

Abstract:Developing electropolymerized magenta-to-transmissive electrochromic polymers is crucial in completing the CMY color palette. In this paper, three pure donor-type monomers (E3TE, Q3TQ and pro3Tpro) with various degrees of twisting blocks as peripheral electropolymerization units (EDOT/Prodot-Me2/proDot) and terthiophene (3T) as the central nucleus have been synthesized. Moreover, the corresponding polymers (pE3TE, pQ3TQ) were prepared via electropolymerization successfully. The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of both polymers were systematically investigated. Introducing the 3, 4-propylenedioxythiophene into 3T yields pQ3TQ with heightened degrees of twisting along the polymer backbone, slightly increasing the onsets of oxidation and blue-shifting the absorption precisely. The neutral polymer colors were fine-tunable from purple to magenta while maintaining transmissive oxidized states from pE3TE to pQ3TQ. The pQ3TQ has low oxidation potential (less than 1 V (E vs Ag/AgCl)), fast-switching time (0.63 s/0.29 s at 531 nm), reasonable optical contrast (31.9 % at 531 nm), good optical memory, excellent coloring efficiency (479.9 cm2/C), robust cycle stability (600 cycles) and large area specific capacitance (2.47 mF/cm2). This work provides a novel strategy to precisely disrupt planarity to obtain available color adjustment of electropolymerized polymer films and also provides an electrochromic-supercapacitor bifunctional material.

Abstract:Copolymers based on 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and naphthalene have been successfully prepared via electropolymerization in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate. Cyclic voltammograms, FTIR, and XPS confirm the formation of copolymers. The EDOT/naphthalene ratio in the polymer chain increases with applied increasing EDOT/naphthalene feed ratio. The copolymers exhibit multicolor electrochromism, and the color can be tuned by controlling the applied feed ratio. The copolymer prepared with EDOT/naphthalene at 8/1 displays multiple colors under various potentials, which presents absorption peak at 531nm and 1.7eV in the neutral state. The bleaching and coloration times at 531nm are 1.2 and 3.6s, respectively. Furthermore, the copolymer has good optical and electrochemical stability, which only loses 2% of its contrast after 500 steps, and 14% of its electroactivity after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Organic electrochromic materials change color rapidly under applied potential. A butterfly-shaped compound, 5,5',-5″,-5'″-(thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,3,5,6-tetrayl) tetrakis-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine) (t-EDOT-TT) is synthesized for the first time and polymerized at different potentials via electropolymerization technique. By applying different polymerization potentials, the optical and electrochromic properties of this newly synthesized polymer can be tuned. Owing to the dependence of functional group position in the polymer structure on the redox potential, this polymer can be utilized in very interesting organic optoelectronic applications.

Multi-color Electrochromism Containing Green Color Based on Electrochemically Polymerized Star-Shaped Phenyl Bithiophene

Abstract:A star-shaped thiophene derivative, namely PHBT, consisting of one central core of phenyl and three arms of bithiophene, was newly synthesized and characterized, in order to further investigate the relationship between the star-shaped monomer structure (central core and peripheral arm) and the polymeric electrochromic properties. Then it was further successfully prepared into the corresponding cross-linked polymer pPHBT via electrochemical polymerization. After applying positive voltage, pPHBT exhibited excellent electrochromic properties with surprising multi-color changes between three colors, orange-yellow, green and blue, and a fast color switching speed. Furthermore, electronic structure, cyclic voltammetry and electrochromic results of pPHBT can contribute much to explain the electrochromic behavior of pTPABT with the triphenylamine core and the quadruple thiophene arm. The electrochromism of pTPABT might consist of two parts derived from the oxidative states of triphenylamine and quadruple thiophene groups, respectively. This offers a new insight into the electrochromism mechanics of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:An electrochromic copolymer based on pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) are electrodeposited on ITO electrode in aqueous micellar solution. The copolymer show blue grey in neutral state (-0.8V) and light blue in oxidized state(0.8V). The λmax of the copolymer in neutral state is 530nm and the onset energy for π-π* transition (Eg) is calculated to be 1.68eV by the onset wavelength. And successive cycle voltammagrams indicate that the incorporation of EDOT units into the Ppy improves the electrochemical stability of the copolymer films, which retains 89% of electroactivity after 500 cycles, the copolymer could be as a promising candidate material for electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Direct arylation methods have been used to polymerize thienylmethylene oxindoles (TEIs) and 3,3-bis[[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]methyl]-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno-[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepin (ProDOT) for new donor-acceptor conjugated polymers. The polymers exhibited blue hues in neutral-state with distinct color-to-transmissive reversible electrochromic switching under applied potentials from 0 V to +1.5 V, and showed high coloration efficiencies (436–438 cm2·C−1) in near-infrared regions with high switching speeds around 1–2 s under ambient conditions.

Tetra-EDOT Substituted 3D Electrochromic Polymers with Lower Band Gaps

Abstract:A couple of novel electrochromic materials poly(2,3,4,5-tetrakis(2,3-hydrothieno[3,4- b ]dixin-5-yl)-1-methyl-1 H -pyrrole) (P( t -EDOT-mPy)) and poly(5,5′,5′′,5′′′-(thiophene-2,3,4,5-tetrayl)tetrakis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4- b ][1,4]dioxine)) (P( t -EDOT-Th)) are electrodeposited via multi-position polymerization of their tetra -EDOT substituted monomers t -EDOT-mPy and t -EDOT-Th, respectively. Compared with the linear 2D structured poly(thiophene) ( E g =2.2 eV) and poly(2,5-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4- b ][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)thiophene) ( E g =1.7 eV), P( t -EDOT-Th) ( E g =1.62 eV) has the lowest band gap. Hence, we speculate that the band gaps of the two polymers, having 3D structures, are decreased in contrast to non-substituted polymers or bi -EDOT substituted polymers, thiophene and 1-methyl-1 H -pyrrole. The results indicated that P( t -EDOT-Th) thin films are more stable and show higher transmittance amid two polymers, which may find their utilization in organic optoelectronics.
Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based conjugated copolymers for solution-processable neutral black electrochromism

Abstract:In the quest for ideal color and performance of black electrochromism, two solution-processable neutral black electrochromic copolymers, PTTBTPh0.35 and PTTBTTh0.30, were prepared through facile direct (hetero)arylation polymerization. Both copolymers exhibit a favorable black color with broad absorption across the visible range of the spectrum and PTTBTPh0.35 shows quite high color neutrality with CIE 1976 coordinates (L* = 37.23; a* = -1.59; b* = 0.32). Moreover, both the copolymers reveal desirable electrochromic performances of fast switching within 1 s, high optical contrasts over 35% and considerable color efficiencies around 200 cm(2) C-1, appearing to be promising candidates for electrochromic displays. Additionally, reliable electroactivity and high contrast in the NIR region make them applicable in energy storage and smart windows.

Abstract:Five carbazole-containing polymeric membranes (PDTC, P(DTC-co-BTP), P(DTC-co-BTP2), P(DTC-co-TF), and P(DTC-co-TF2)) were electrodeposited on transparent conductive electrodes. P(DTC-co-BTP2) shows a high ΔT (68.4%) at 855 nm. The multichromic properties of P(DTC-co-TF2) membrane range between dark yellow, yellowish-green, gunmetal gray, and dark gray in various reduced and oxidized states. Polymer-based organic electrochromic devices are assembled using 2,2′-bithiophene- and 2-(2-thienyl)furan-based copolymers as anodic membranes, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT-PSS) as the cathodic membrane. P(DTC-co-TF)/PEDOT-PSS electrochromic device (ECD) displays a high transmittance change (ΔT%) (43.4%) at 627 nm as well as a rapid switching time (less than 0.6 s) from a colored to a bleached state. Moreover, P(DTC-co-TF2)/PEDOT-PSS ECD shows satisfactory optical memory (the transmittance change is less than 2.9% in the colored state) and high coloration efficiency (512.6 cm2 C−1) at 627 nm.

Abstract:A 1,3-bis(carbazol-9-yl)benzene derivative (BPBC) was synthesized and its related homopolymer (PBPBC) and copolymers (P(BPBC-co-BT), P(BPBC-co-CDT), and P(BPBC-co-CDTK)) were prepared using electrochemical polymerization. Investigations of polymeric spectra showed that PBPBC film was grey, iron-grey, yellowish-grey, and greyish-green from the neutral to the oxidized state. P(BPBC-co-BT), P(BPBC-co-CDT), and P(BPBC-co-CDTK) films showed multicolor transitions from the reduced to the oxidized state. The transmittance change (ΔT) of PBPBC, P(BPBC-co-BT), P(BPBC-co-CDT), and P(BPBC-co-CDTK) films were 29.6% at 1040 nm, 44.4% at 1030 nm, 22.3% at 1050 nm, and 41.4% at 1070 nm. The coloration efficiency (η) of PBPBC and P(BPBC-co-CDTK) films were evaluated to be 140.3 cm2 C−1 at 1040 nm and 283.7 cm2 C−1 at 1070 nm, respectively. A P(BPBC-co-BT)/PEDOT electrochromic device (ECD) showed a large ΔT (36.2% at 625 nm) and a fast response time (less than 0.5 s), whereas a P(BPBC-co-CDTK)/PEDOT ECD revealed a large η (534.4 cm2 C–1 at 610 nm) and sufficient optical circuit memory.

Both PProDTM and copolymer films shown light blue in the oxidized state, while in the reduced state PProDTM and copolymer films shown purple and dark blue, respectively. The optical contrast of PProDTM and copolymer films reached 43.6% and 27.7%. In addition, the coloration efficiency of PProDTM and copolymer films reached 91.3 and 107.8 cm2C-1. The results of electrochemical and electrochromic property shown that the PProDTM and copolymer films potential application in electrochromic field.
4-(Trifluoromethoxy)phenyl-Containing Polymers as Promising Anodic Materials for Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:Three 4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl-based polydithienylpyrroles (PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), and P(TTPP-co-DTP)) were synthesized electrochemically and their electrochromic behaviors were characterized. The introduction of electron withdrawing trifluoromethoxy unit in the side chain of polydithienylpyrroles (PSNS) decreases the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of PSNS. PTTPP film displays three various colors (grayish-yellow at 0 V, grayish-blue at 1.0 V, and bluish-violet at 1.4 V) from reduced to oxidized states. The optical contrast of PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), and P(TTPP-co-DTP) electrodes are 24.5% at 1050 nm, 49.0% at 916 nm, and 53.8% at 1302 nm, respectively. The highest η of the PTTPP electrode is 379.64 cm2 C−1 at 1050 nm. Three ECDs based on PTTPP, P(TTPP-co-DTC), or P(TTPP-co-DTP) as anodic film and PProDOT-Et2 as cathodic film were fabricated. PTTPP/PProDOT-Et2 ECD showed high transmittance change (35.7% at 588 nm) and high η (890.96 cm2·C−1 at 588 nm). P(TTPP-co-DTC)/PProDOT-Et2 and P(TTPP-co-DTP)/PProDOT-Et2 ECDs showed high transmittance change, rapid response time, adequate open circuit memory, and good electrochemical redox stability. Based on these findings, this work provides novel insights for appropriate design of high transmittance change and high efficient multi-colored electrochromic polymers.

Abstract:In order to develop novel electrochromic materials, 5,5 ''-dicyano-2,2 ':5 ',2 ''-terthiophene (DCN3T) 5,5 '''-dicyano-2,2 ':5 ',2 '':5 '',2 '''-tetrathiophene (DCN4T), 5,5 '''-dimethoxy-2,2 ':5 ',2 '':5 '',2 '''-tetrathiophene (DMO4T) and 4,4 ''-bicarboxyl-5,5 ''-bipropyl-2,2 ':5 ',2 ''-tetrathiophene (BP3T-DCOOH) were synthesized, and their electrochromic properties were studied. It was found that DCN3T, DCN4T, DMO4T and BP3T-DCOOH as solid films showed reversible, clear color changes on electrochemical doping and dedoping.

Abstract:In the quest for solution-processable red electrochromic material with high performance, a series of 3,6-bis(dodecyloxy)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DOTT)-based polymers have been designed by combining DOTT with different aromatic building blocks (bithiophene, benzene, and dimethoxybenzene) and prepared through Pd-catalyzed chemical copolymerization. Among them, the solution-processable polymer poly(2,5-dimethoxypheny1-1,4-diy1-3,6-bis-(dodecyloxy)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (P3) showed obvious yellow-green fluorescence in chloroform and demonstrated a rapid reversible switching (1.1 s/0.9 s for doping/dedoping process) between the red and bleached states. This brilliant red polymer exhibited moderate contrast (46% at 510 nm) and excellent cycling stability (in film: 78% for total amount and 63% for reduction after 12000 cycles; in device: 85.6% after 3000 cycles) which qualify it for further device fabrications. This study reveals that this polymer (P3) would be a promising high performance red electrochrome and could be a good candidate for flexible and large-scale organic electrochromic devices as well as for smart indicators or display applications.
