Abstract:The area of pulsed-power technology covers a broad range of voltages and pulse durations. State of the art systems have voltages up to a few hundred kilovolts at pulse lengths down to the nanosecond range. Special applications require extreme field strengths in the range of 1 GV/m. The design of a compact source meeting the above requirement aims for 1 MV, 1 ns pulses. In this paper, we propose a concept for a novel compact transmission line transformer. To verify theoretical analyses and understanding, a model of the transmission line transformer has been simulated by time domain electromagnetic field solver. An optimized transmission line transformer has been built and first measurements have been performed. The equivalent simulation model agrees with the experimental results. The effect of secondary mode suppression by means of ferrite has been studied. Both simulations and experiments showed that ferromagnetic cores around each individual transmissions line in our design can be omitted

Abstract:With the development of electromagnetic weapons, nuclear electromagnetic pulse and its engineering protection technology has attracted world-wide attention. For simulating the electromagnetic pulse environment, a compact high voltage pulse generator was developed. The erected waveform with~1.6ns rise time, 42ns pulse width, 60kV peak value can be produced when this generator is connected to bounded-wave EMP simulator of the equivalent impedance of 120 ohms. Design considerations, system architecture, and experimental results of the generator are presented in this paper.

Abstract:This paper describes an efficient, repetitive nanosecond pulsed power generator using a Transmission-Line-Transformer (TLT) based multiple-switch technology. Within this setup, a 10-stage TLT and ten high-pressure spark-gap switches are adopted. At the input side, ten spark-gap switches are interconnected in series via the TLT, so that all the spark-gap switches can be synchronized automatically. At the output side, all the stages of the TLT are connected in parallel, thus a low output impedance (5 12) is obtained, and a large output current is realized by adding the currents through all the switches. Experimental results show that 10 spark-gap switches can be synchronized within about 10 ns. The system has been successfully demonstrated at repetition rates up to 300 pps (Pulses Per Second). Pulses with a rise-time of about 11 ns, a pulse width of about 55 ns, an energy of 9-24 J per pulse, a peak power of 300-810 MW, a peak voltage of 40-77 kV, and a peak current of 6-11 kA have been achieved with an energy conversion efficiency of 93-98%.

Abstract:In this article we discuss a 10 kW high-voltage pulse generator for producing corona-induced plasma. The generator mainly consists of a three-step resonant charging circuit switched by thyristors, a transmission line transformer, and a triggered spark-gap switch. Voltage pulses of 30–100 kV with a rise time of about 20 ns, a pulse duration of 50–250 ns, pulse repetition rate of 1–900 pulses per second, energy of up to 12 J/pulse, and an average power of up to 10 kW have been achieved with a total energy transfer efficiency of about 80%–90%. At each frequency, the deviation of the energy per pulse is around 1.0%. Moreover, the generator has been tested for more than 100 h for both industrial demonstrations and laboratory investigations at an average output power of 1–10 kW.

Abstract:A compact high-power ultra-wideband bipolar pulse generator based on a modified Marx circuit is designed, which is mainly composed of a primary power supply, Marx generator, sharpening and cutoff subnanosecond spark gap switches, and coaxial transmission lines. The Marx generator with modified circuit structure has thirty-two stages and is composed of eight disk-like modules. Each module consists of four capacitors, two spark gap switches, four charging inductors, and a mechanical support. To simplify the design of the charging structure and reduce the number of switches, four groups of inductors are used to charge the capacitors of the Marx generator, two of which are used for positive voltage charging and the other two for negative voltage charging. When the capacitor of each stage is charged to 35 kV, the maximum output peak voltage can reach 1 MV when the Marx generator is open circuit. The high-voltage pulse generated by the Marx generator charges the transmission line and forms a bipolar pulse through sharpening and cutoff switches. All transmission lines used for bipolar pulse generation have an impedance of 10 Ω. When the 950 kV pulse voltage generated by the Marx generator is fed into the transmission line, the bipolar pulse peak voltage can reach 390 kV, the center frequency of the pulse is about 400 MHz, and the output peak power is about 15.2 GW.

Abstract:Pulse generators with high voltage and several nanoseconds of rise time are typically used to carry out the equivalent assessment of the protection performance of typical power equipment in the high-altitude electromagnetic pulse environment. In this paper, a pulse generator with high voltage and fast rise time has been designed, and the diagnostic system with high temporal resolution has been integrated to measure the output pulse voltage of the generator. The experimental results showed that the output pulse voltage of the generator on the output load can reach 645 kV when the charged voltage of Marx generator capacitors is 40 kV. The rise time of the generator is 8.2-9.9 ns when the charged voltage of Marx generator capacitors is in the range of 20-40 kV.

Abstract:High-voltage ultrafast pulses can be effectively used to control the gated traveling-wave amplitude division of microchannel plates. In view of that and according to the microstrip transmission theory, this study proposes a pulse generator based on the Marx circuit of a field-effect tube. In this study, detailed designs of the proposed pulse generator are presented and validated by simulations using the OrCAD PSpice. An experimental setup is constructed to demonstrate the viability of the proposed design. Finally, an optimized pulse with a 2.2-kV amplitude and a 220-ps width is generated. This article provides a reference for future design of advanced direct capacitor discharge pulse generator with adjustable pulse parameters using the silicon carbide field effect.

Abstract:We develop a fast rise time pulser which can be used to test the insulation ability of materials against pulse voltage in electrical system.The pulser can produce a pulse wave with 50 ns rise time and 1000 kV peak voltage.The Marx of the device,which is completely immersed into insulation oil,is comprised of 10 0.015 μF/100 kV plastic shell capacitors.Because the rise time of a pulse wave is decided by the inductance of the discharging circuit,we must adopt methods to decrease the inductance.In our design,we parallel a 500 Ω resistor to the capacitance load in order to accelerate the decay of the output oscillating wave,which can lower the requirements for insulation.Then,the size of the device can be made relatively small and the inductance is reduced.Since the actual load is insulation materials in power system and most operations are in the non-breakdown condition,we adopt a capacitor to replace the load in electrical design,which ranges from 30 pF to 80 pF.In addition,a transforming line is used to connect the Marx with the load and the line is composed of two metal pipes,between which is filled with oil to insulate.The design of the device is presented,and the simulation results by Pspice show that when the peak voltage of the output pulse is set to 1000 kV,the rise time ranges from 23 ns to 28 ns,which meets the requirements completely.
Nanosecond pulsed power technology for transient plasma generation

Abstract:In this chapter we present a design approach of a high-voltage single-line nanosecond pulse source by using a thorough analytical investigation and by verification with 3D EM simulations in CST Microwave Studio. Through detailed analysis and simulation we arrive at a design for a fast rise time, variable pulse duration pulse source which is able to produce 1–10-nanosecond pulses with tens of kilovolt amplitude and less than hundreds of picosecond rise time. The variable pulse duration is achieved in two ways: i) by varying the length of the pulse forming line of the pulse source by using telescopic antennas, and ii) by realising a high-ohmic termination of the pulse forming line by means of magnetic material in the pulse forming line. Finally, we present the design of a first implementation of a 5-nanosecond pulse source with an oil spark gap for very fast switching.

Abstract:Magnetic pulse compression(MPC) system has been widely-used for over a few decades as a technique for producing short-duration,high-peak-power pulses reliably.A novel MPC system which does not contain external demagnetization circuits,has broadened the application of MPC systems.Improvements for novel MPC systems are presented.To meet the required voltage and compression gain and on considering of the overall system efficiency,two kinds of most popular MPC systems based on the improved MPC topology are designed,which are 2-stage MPC system and 3-stage MPC system,respectively.Based on the improved MPC topology,several kinds of compact pulse generators are built in pulsed power and supply technology laboratory of Institute of Electrical Engineering,Chinese Academy of Sciences.These generators illustrate that the improved MPC topology,together with solid state switches provides an ideal way to generate pulses of around 100 nano-seconds in width,with mid and high voltage of 10 kV to 100 kV,and a high repetition frequency of about 30 kHz.

Abstract:Dielectric barrier discharge excitated by pulsed power is a promising approach for producing nonthermal plasma at atmospheric pressure, but pulsed power generators vary widely in performance and should be chosen according to application requirements. In this paper, a repetitive unipolar nanosecond-pulse generator is constructed using resonant charging and one-stage magnetic compression circuits, where IGBT and magnetic switches are the key units, respectively. The generator is capable of providing repetitive pulses with a voltage of up to 30 kV and duration of 70 ns at a 300 resistive load. Output pulse voltage can be adjusted by varying ac input voltage or trigger pulse-width. This compact and convenient generator has been used successfully to produce stable dielectric barrier discharge.

Abstract:A generator which can produce high voltage pulse with nanosecond rise time was designed.The generator is based on the use of avalanche transistor in a Marx Bank circuit.As a result,Qswitching speed increases from 90 ns to less than 20 ns,peak power of output pulse increases from 25 mW to 93 mW and pulse width decreases from 16 ns to 8 ns.The generator has many merits such as small bulk,low power consumption,low EMI,high repetition rate,long operating life etc.

Abstract:A plasma reactor is designed and plasma is excited by a low frequency high-voltage pulse generator,its repetitive rate of the pulse is in the range from 0Hz to 800Hz and the amplitude is up to 20kV.The generator consists of one storage capacitor,one AC power supply,silicon stack,resistance networks,high voltage divider and a motor-controlled carbon brush switching.The frequency of the high-voltage pulse can be adjusted by altering the speed of motor,and its duty cycle can also be adjusted by adding the rotor radius of the brush switching or reducing the number of carbon brushes included in brush switching.The authors present the structure of this low frequency high-voltage pulse generator designed in our lab,give the valuable simulation results,compare it with the actual experiment waveforms and find that there is enough similarity between them,proving the carbon brush switching designing principle is feasible.The Matlab Simulink software is a good tool in the simulation of this high-voltage pulse generator.Now plasma has successfully been excited at low pressure by using the low frequency high-voltage pulse generator,which assures our normal research about applications of plasma.

Abstract:The application of pulsed electric fields with durations in the range of nanoseconds and field strengths on the order of hundred kilovolt per centimeter has demonstrated great potential for the treatment of cancer cells. However, successful exposures require the generation of high voltage pulses that can be sustained across a load with an impedance that is often much lower than 100 ohm. A second challenge is the wish to expose cell suspensions in large volumes and eventually also extended tumors. These requirements are driving the development of pulse generators that can provide pulses with amplitudes of several tens of kilovolts across loads of only a few tens of ohms. In addition pulse generators should be small and portable to bring them to different treatment sites and patients, respectively. Many nanosecond pulse generators that are currently used for biomedical studies rely on transmission line configurations. With this straight forward approach it was possible to develop pulse generators which allow the exposure of samples with an impedance as low as 10 ohm. However, the pulse amplitude across a matched load is generally limited to values of 30-35 kV. An increase of the pulse voltage is possible with Marx-bank topologies and we have constructed a system providing a peak voltage of 90 kV in a pulse with a duration of about 250 ns across a load with an impedance of 300 Ω. However, this pulse is not rectangular. To provideamplitudes. Pulse forming networks and Blumlein line pulse generators were investigated. In particular we studied systems that are based on the concept of stacked Blumlein lines.lines. Several systems for the generation of 100-ns pulses were built and used in experiments with different biological loads.
Electro-optical measurement of pulsed voltage with nanosecond risetime

Abstract:The transient electric field of highly intense electromagnetic pulse (EMP) will seriously damage the military and civil installations, so it is significantly important to measure such electric field with nanosecond risetime. In this paper a sensor of electric voltage and electric field was developed by employing electro-optical effect of LiNbO3 crystal with transversal modulation. The interrelated optical axes of the components were adjusted on the basis of the theoretical analysis and calculations. The collimation of optical components of the sensor was kept by machining. The characteristics of the sensor were tested by using nanosecond voltage generator (MFD-1). The results show that the risetime of the sensor is less than 5 ns (waveform with little over-shot) and 7 ns (waveform without overshot), and the measurement error is approximately 5%.

Abstract:To investigate the overvoltage during direct lightning strike,models on PSCAD/EMTDC platform were designed to simulate the transients during lightning direct strike on transmission tower and impulse voltage waves imposed on insulators According to the simulation results,the actual impulse voltage is not same as standard one.And the differences may cause errors in the evaluation of lightning performance.The breakdown characteristics of air gap under short-tail impulse,which is similar to actual waveform,were experimentally investigated.In the experiment,the impulse wave featured a reduced wave-tail time which was less than 10μs.It would cause equivalent effects to the air-gap with actual lightning strike.The air gap under study was a rod-plane gap with the length ranging from 0.5 ～ 1.4 m.The experimental result indicates that the breakdown voltage of air gap under short tail impulse is significantly higher than that of standard wave,about 40% higher for positive impulses,implying that previously-used methods may yield much lower withstand lightning current and consequently causes an over-investment on insulation.Finally,the parameters of Leader Propagation Model were studied and their effects on the simulation results were illustrated.Experimental data shows that the LPM can be applied to calculate the breakdown characteristics of short-tail waveform with good accuracy,and a set of parameter suitable for short-tail impulse is acquired.
Study on Phenomenon and Mechanism of Overvoltage in Electrothermal-Chemical Launch

Abstract:According to the phenomenon of overvoltage observed in the emission experiment, based on the circuit structure, the characteristics of the main components and the load characteristics of the electrothermal-chemical gun in the system, the mechanism of overvoltage was obtained through the contrast test, resistance measurement of the plasma generator, the equivalent parameter measurement and the theoretical analysis. The studies show that the overvoltage phenomenon occurs only during the firing processof electrothermal-chemical gun, which is directly related to the characteristics of the generator in the gun bore. The studies also show that the mechanism of overvoltage is caused by the broken arc of generator surface where the electric arc is forced to go out by environmentin thegun chamber at the end of the pulse discharge and the load mutation occurs,resulting in overvoltage inside the system. Then the residual magnetic energy of pulse forming inductor is converted into the electric energy of stray capacity in the system, which causes electromagnetic oscillation. According to the characteristics of the main components, the influence of overvoltage on insulation coordination was briefly analyzed and the harm caused by overvoltage was summarized. The overvoltage snubbercircuits were designed, which include resistance-capacitance circuit, buffer resistor and buffer inductor. The experimental resultsthat the buffer circuits can effectively suppress the overvoltagecaused by thebroken arc of generatorsurface during the launching process. The electrothermal-chemical launch technology is currently developing towards engineering application. The research results can be used to guide the miniaturization design of insulation in the launching system and help to improve the reliability of the system.
Development of a 3 MV coaxial peaking capacitor for large-scale electromagnetic pulse simulator

Abstract:Coaxial peaking capacitor is a key component in high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) simulators with fast front pulse output. It poses significant technical and engineering challenges in limiting radiation field amplitude and test space. This paper presents the design and testing of a 180 pF, 3 MV coaxial peaking capacitor with improved insulation performance. In the insulation design, the length of the dielectric film is extended to reduce the background electric field on the flashover path. The electric field threshold obtained from image diagnosis is used as a reference. During capacitor testing, the insulation characteristics are diagnosed using both direct and indirect methods. The voltage measured by a D-dot probe, the output waveform of the Marx generator in the primary source, and the radiation field waveform are analyzed to understand the flashover characteristics of the capacitor and to improve the reliability of the test results. The experimental results demonstrate that the peaking capacitor can operate stably at 3.0 MV. If flashover occurring on the dropping edge of the pulse is permitted, the operating voltage can be greater than 3.7 MV without significantly affecting the radiation field waveform. The analysis on the surface flashover morphology of the peaking capacitor reveals that the flashover mainly occurs at the dropping edge of the capacitor's waveform, indicating that the damage to the film is not serious. This research significantly increases the working voltage of coaxial peaking capacitors and contributes to the development of high-altitude EMP simulation technology.

Abstract:A compact PFN (pulse forming network)-Marx generator, which is based on mica capacitors, is constructed to generate intense electron beams for the purpose of high-power microwave generation. The key components of the generator, including a PFN-Marx, a trigger source, a multi-stage gas switch, and a load, are introduced in this paper. The PFN-Marx is composed of 19 PFN modules, which are formed by four mica capacitors in parallel. The temperature characteristics and pulse characteristics are tested in this study. The mica capacitor is insensitive to the temperature, and its lifetime is tens of thousands. Considering the influence of the ultraviolet light pre-ionization, gas gap switches are assembled in a nylon house. The trigger source, which is a mini-Marx generator based on the integration into the magnetic transformer and the magnetic switch, is used for increasing the stability of the switches. The generator has been tested on a water load and a relative magnetron. The experimental results show that this generator can deliver electrical pulses with the pulse width of 120 ns and the amplitude of 400 kV on a 40-Ω water load at a repetition rate of 50 Hz. In addition, utilizing the generator to drive a Ku band magnetron at a voltage level of 330 kV, a 500 MW microwave pulse with the pulse width of 50 ns at the frequency of 14.4 GHz is obtained.
