Abstract:In this paper, we examine the distribution of headways collected from Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) datasets. Statistics show that the observed headways follow a certain log-normal type distribution within each preselected velocity range. To explain this phenomenon, an asymmetric stochastic extension of the Tau Theory is proposed. This novel approach assumes that the observed headway distributions are due to drivers' continuous headway adjustment behaviours, and that the intensity of headway change is proportional to headway magnitude. The agreement between the model predictions and the empirical observations indicates that driving behaviours may be implicitly governed by the physiological Tau characteristics of drivers. Abstract:In this paper, we link two research directions of road traffic-the mesoscopic headway distribution model and the microscopic vehicle interaction model-together to account for the empirical headway/spacing distributions. A unified car-following model is proposed to simulate different driving scenarios, including traffic on highways and at intersections. Unlike our previous approaches, the parameters of this model are directly estimated from the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) Trajectory Data. In this model, empirical headway/spacing distributions are viewed as the outcomes of stochastic car-following behaviors and the reflections of the unconscious and inaccurate perceptions of space and/or time intervals that people may have. This explanation can be viewed as a natural extension of the well-known psychological car-following model (the action point model). Furthermore, the fast simulation speed of this model will benefit transportation planning and surrogate testing of traffic signals.

Abstract:To model car-following behavior and make the model extend easily from micro-behavior to macro traffic phenomenon, we use headway as the drivers' decision variable for changing velocity and establish the car-following model. First, the universe of running vehicles is divided into car-following and free driving with the two-fluid theory for reference. The mixed distribution model is presented to describe the characteristic of measured headway distribution. Second, the parameters correlated with car-following behavior are selected from the mixed distribution model and used to design the car-following model. The established car-following model simulated individual vehicle actions with comparing headway changing and the driver's expecting to adjust the velocity of vehicle. Finally, verified the effect of car-following model with numerical simulations. The results showed that the car-following model can simulate individual vehicle behavior in many situations effectively and reflects the status of macro traffic platoon in some extent with combining dynamic multi-individual vehicles. © 2011 ASCE.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the car following behavioral stochasticity based on two sets of field experimental trajectory data by measuring the wave travel time series of vehicle n. The analysis shows that (i) No matter the speed of leading vehicle oscillates significantly or slightly, wave travel time might change significantly; (ii) A follower's wave travel time can vary from run to run even the leader travels at the same stable speed; (iii) Sometimes, even if the leader speed fluctuates significantly, the follower can keep a nearly constant value of wave travel time. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller test indicates that the time series the changing rate of wave travel time follows a mean reversion process, no matter the oscillations fully developed or not. Based on the finding, a simple stochastic Newell model is proposed. The concave growth pattern of traffic oscillations has been derived analytically. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that the new model well captures both macroscopic characteristic of traffic flow evolution and microscopic characteristic of car following.

Abstract:This paper discusses three kinds of IDM car-following models that consider both the multi-anticipative behaviors and the reaction delays of drivers. Here, the multi-anticipation comes from two ways: (1) the driver is capable of evaluating the dynamics of several preceding vehicles, and (2) the autonomous vehicles can obtain the velocity and distance information of several preceding vehicles via inter-vehicle communications. In this paper, we study the stability of homogeneous traffic flow. The linear stability analysis indicates that the stable region will generally be enlarged by the multi-anticipative behaviors and reduced by the reaction delays. The temporal amplification and the spatial divergence of velocities for local perturbation are also studied, where the results further prove this conclusion. Simulation results also show that the multi-anticipative behaviors near the bottleneck will lead to a quicker backwards propagation of oscillations.

Abstract:The Car-following models is a kind of microscopic simulation model for vehicular traffic, which describe the one-by-one following behaviors of vehicles in the same traffic lane. As a common traffic phenomenon, following behavior is of great importance in the micro-study of intelligent traffic control. Compared with other traffic-flow models, car-following model embodies the human factors and reflects the real traffic situation in a better way. This paper gives a systematic review of the development and actuality of car-following models by introducing and analyzing in detail the advantages and disadvantages of GHR model, OV model, CA model and fuzzy-logic model. In addition, local stability and asymptotic stability of car-following models are discussed in this paper.
A New Car-Following Model Yielding Log-Normal Type Headways Distributions

Abstract:Different from previous models based on scatter theory and random matrix theory, a new interpretation of the observed log-normal type time-headway distribution of vehicles is presented in this paper. Inspired by the well known Galton Board, this model views driver's velocity adjusting process similar to the dynamics of a particle falling down a board and being deviated at decision points. A new car-following model based on this idea is proposed to reproduce the observed traffic flow phenomena. The agreement between the empirical observations and the simulation results suggests the soundness of this new approach.

Abstract:Car-following theory is of significance in microscopic traffic flow theory. The key assumption of current car-following theory is that vehicles travel in the middle of a single lane. However, this assumption is unrealistic and cannot describe driving behavior in a complex traffic environment. When the lateral separation characteristics between the follower and the leader are taken into account, the time-to-collision equation is modified with visual angle information and introduced into the General Motors model. A non-lane-based model of car following was developed; it uses time to collision and is based on the stimulus–response framework. The proposed model was investigated with simulations conducted under several driving scenarios. The model could describe local and asymptotic stabilities, lateral movement, and the effect of neighboring vehicles. Results implied that this staggered car-following model incorporating lateral separation greatly enhanced the realism of car-following behavior.

Abstract:The conventional car-following theory is based on the assumption that vehicles will travel along the center line of lanes. However, according to the field survey data, in complex traffic conditions, a lateral separation between the leader and the follower frequently occurs. Accordingly, by taking lateral separation into account, we redefined the equation of time-to-collision (TTC) using visual angle information. Based on the stimulus-response framework, TTC was introduced into the basic General Motors (GM) model as a stimulus, and a non-lane-based car-following model of steady-state traffic flow was developed. The property of flow-density relationship was further investigated after integrating the proposed car-following model with different parameters. The results imply that the property of steady-state traffic flow and the capacity of each lane are highly relevant to the microscopic staggered car-following behavior, and the proposed model significantly enhances the practicality of the human driving behavior model.

Abstract:This paper presents a new car-following model which focuses on car-following behavior along a discrete time sequence. We find an independent and identically distributed (IID) parameter ∆aj by performing autocorrelation tests on a field experiment driving dataset. We further find ∆aj follows a normal distribution and incorporate this parameter into Newell's car-following framework. The model is validated by successfully explaining the concave oscillation phenomenon observed in real-world vehicle platoon experiments. This paper also introduces two applications of the proposed model in mixed traffic flow analysis. We find that (i) Autonomous vehicles (AVs) can significantly stabilize their follower's car-following behavior and (ii) an increase in AV penetration rate can improve traffic safety without undermining traffic throughput.

Abstract:For describing the distribution characteristics of headway,driving behaviors are classified into car-following state and free driving state by reference to the two-fluid theory.After analysis of their operation features,a mixed distribution model that can describe the headway distribution of both the two driving states was built.The model parameters were determined by expectation maximization(EM) algorithm using the measured data.Then,the differences between the statistical characteristics of the driving behaviors in up-stream section,downstream section and different lanes were analyzed and verified through a case study.The results show that the mixed distribution model can pass the chi-square test in all road situations.Compared with the negative exponential distribution,Erlang distribution,and M3 distribution,the mixed distribution model can improve the fitting accuracy of simulation by more than 10%,and obtain a more close result to the measured data in calculating the traffic capacity of an expressway on-ramp.

Abstract:Real‐world traffic flow is influenced by various random factors. Gaussian white noise is employed to describe the inherent randomness of traffic flow. A stochastic optimization velocity model is established for dynamic analysis. To enhance the traffic flow stability, the velocity difference of two successive vehicles ahead is considered. The velocity difference feedback control strategy is proposed, utilizing the velocity differences between the vehicle and the two targeted vehicles as control signals. Stability conditions for both the stochastic optimization velocity model and the feedback control model are derived by using the moment stability theory. The study demonstrates that the random factors can destabilize traffic flow, while the proposed feedback control strategy effectively stabilizes traffic flow. Additionally, the influences of random factors on the stability of traffic flow are discussed extensively, aiding in understanding actual traffic congestion mechanisms and offering insights for traffic control strategies.

Abstract:This Letter develops a new staggered car-following model taking into consideration lateral separation effects. Time-to-collision, calculated using visual angle variables, is introduced to describe the lateral separation distance and improve the optimal velocity model. The analytical and numerical results show that the stability of traffic flow can gradually be enhanced with the increase of lateral separation effects. The asymmetry property of traffic flow is also investigated using the new model. The results imply that incorporating lateral separation effects into the car-following model leads to the suppression of traffic jams and greatly enhances the realism of the model.

Abstract:Existing traffic flow models give little consideration on vehicle sizes. We introduce the solid angle into car-following theory, taking the driver's perception of the leading vehicle's size into account. The solid angle and its change rate are applied as inputs to the novel model. A nonlinear stability analysis is performed to analyze the asymmetry of the model and the size effect of the leading vehicle, and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is derived. The solid angle model can explain complex traffic characteristics and provide an important basis for modeling nonlinear traffic phenomena.

Abstract:In order to describe car following behavior in real world, this paper presents a non-lane-based car following model by incorporating the effects of the lane width in traffic. The stability condition of the model is obtained by using the linear stability theory. And numerical simulation is carried out to validate the analytic results. The property of the model is investigated, and it is found that the proposed model can describe the phase transition of traffic flow and estimate the evolution of traffic congestion. The results implied that incorporating the lane width effects in car following model not only stabilize traffic flow and suppress the traffic jam, but also lower critical headway and increase capacity. Thus, the lateral separation effects greatly enhance the realism of car following models.

Abstract:The vast majority of car-following models are lack of the consideration of human drivers’ characteristics. Based on the fact that each driver of a following vehicle perceives closing-in or shying-away a leading vehicle in front of him/her, primarily due to changes in the apparent size of the leading vehicle, we improved the full velocity difference (FVD) model and presented a visual angle car-following model. This model is in view of the stimulus–response framework and uses the visual angle and the change rate of the visual angle as stimulus. Results from linear analysis showed that the neutral stability line is asymmetry and the width of the leading vehicle has a great impact on the stability of traffic flow. Numerical simulations obtained the same results as theoretical analysis clearly such as density wave, shrinking hysteresis, asymmetry and wide scattering. Thus, the introducing of the visual angle can explain some complex nature of traffic flow and contribute to the design of more realistic car-following models.

Abstract:This paper presents a car-following model that considers the asymmetric characteristic of the velocity differences of the vehicles in a traffic stream. The problems of the prevalent general force (GF) model and the full velocity difference (FVD) model were solved. Furthermore, the optimal velocity (OV) model, the GF model, and the FVD model are proved to be the special cases of the proposed asymmetric full velocity difference (AFVD) model. The mathematical model is presented, followed by simulation analysis which demonstrates the properties of the AFVD model.

Abstract:The car-following behavior can be influenced by its driver's backward-looking effect. Especially in traffic congestion, if vehicles adjust the headway by considering backward-looking effect, the stability of traffic flow can be enhanced. A model of car-following behavior considering backward-looking effect was built using visual information as a stimulus. The critical stability conditions were derived by linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The results of parameter sensitivity analysis indicate that the stability of traffic flow was enhanced by considering the backward-looking effect. The spatiotemporal evolution of traffic flow of different truck ratios and varying degrees of backward-looking effect was determined by numerical simulation. This study lays a foundation for exploring the complex feature of car-following behavior and making the intelligent network vehicles control rules more consistent with human driver habits.
