Abstract:To release traffic congestion, highway expansion is one of the most common methods. However, the result of highway expansion usually turns out to be a counterproductive effect, namely, the so-called Downs-Thomson Paradox. This work tries to investigate the mechanism within the traffic system with heterogeneous commuters. We model the highway as bottleneck, and model the transit considering the cost of in-vehicle crowding. The highlights of this work are: (1) A method to calculate transit operator's strategy with heterogeneous commuters; (2) Establishment of the relationship between transit operator's strategy and modal share, in order to investigate Downs-Thomson Paradox with heterogeneous commuters. Finally inspired from a case study, we find an interesting trend by which the D-T Paradox is related to the friction parameter which describes in-vehicle crowding.
