Abstract:Already used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and agrochemical industries, encapsulation is a strategy used to protect active ingredients from external degradation factors and to control their release kinetics. Various encapsulation techniques have been studied, both to optimise the level of protection with respect to the nature of the aggressor and to favour a release mechanism between diffusion of the active compounds and degradation of the barrier material. Biopolymers are of particular interest as wall materials because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. By forming a stable hydrogel around the drug, they provide a 'smart' barrier whose behaviour can change in response to environmental conditions. After a comprehensive description of the concept of encapsulation and the main technologies used to achieve encapsulation, including micro- and nano-gels, the mechanisms of controlled release of active compounds are presented. A panorama of natural polymers as wall materials is then presented, highlighting the main results associated with each polymer and attempting to identify the most cost-effective and suitable methods in terms of the encapsulated drug.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper primarily explores the encapsulation technology of active substances in natural polymer coatings. Specifically, the paper aims to address the following issues: 1. **Protection of active ingredients**: Using encapsulation technology to protect active ingredients from external environmental factors (such as humidity, reactive chemicals in the medium, and ultraviolet light) and to control their release kinetics. 2. **Optimization of encapsulation methods**: Investigating different encapsulation techniques to optimize the level of protection against various harmful factors and to promote release mechanisms, allowing active compounds to achieve a balance between barrier material degradation and diffusion. 3. **Using natural biopolymers as wall materials**: Due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity, natural biopolymers are particularly favored as wall materials. By forming stable hydrogels to encapsulate drugs, these materials can provide an "intelligent" barrier whose behavior can change according to environmental conditions. 4. **Overview of major encapsulation techniques and release mechanisms**: Providing a detailed description of the main techniques used for encapsulation, including microgels and nanogels, and introducing the controlled release mechanisms of active compounds. 5. **Application of natural polymers as wall materials**: Demonstrating the application of natural polymers as wall materials, highlighting the main results of each polymer, and attempting to determine the most economical and suitable method for the encapsulated drugs. Overall, this paper aims to provide strategies and solutions for the effective protection and controlled release of active substances through a systematic study of encapsulation technology and its applications.
