Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence has rapidly expanded its footprint of use in educational institutions. It has been embraced by students, faculty, and staff alike. The technology is capable of carrying out a sustained sequence of interactive dialogs and creating reasonably meaningful text. Not surprisingly it seems to be routinely used by faculty to generate questions and assignments, by students to submit assignments and aid in self-learning, and administration to create manuals, memoranda, and policy documents. With its potential to lead to significant social innovation, tethering on the verge of becoming a disruptive technology, it seems most unlikely that it will fade away without being fully enfolded into almost all aspects of academic and pedagogical activity. While it is early to predict the exact place of this technology in education, we present thoughts to aid deliberations and give a brief review of the opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:We discuss the implications of generative AI on education across four critical sections: the historical development of AI in education, its contemporary applications in learning, societal repercussions, and strategic recommendations for researchers. We propose ways in which generative AI can transform the educational landscape, primarily via its ability to conduct assessment of complex cognitive performances and create personalized content. We also address the challenges of effective educational tool deployment, data bias, design transparency, and accurate output verification. Acknowledging the societal impact, we emphasize the need for updating curricula, redefining communicative trust, and adjusting to transformed social norms. We end by outlining the ways in which educational stakeholders can actively engage with generative AI, develop fluency with its capacities and limitations, and apply these insights to steer educational practices in a rapidly advancing digital landscape.

Abstract:In a previous Birds of a Feather discussion, we delved into the nascent applications of generative AI, contemplating its potential and speculating on future trajectories. Since then, the landscape has continued to evolve revealing the capabilities and limitations of these models. Despite this progress, the computing education research community still faces uncertainty around pivotal aspects such as (1) academic integrity and assessments, (2) curricular adaptations, (3) pedagogical strategies, and (4) the competencies students require to instill responsible use of these tools. The goal of this Birds of a Feather discussion is to unravel these pressing and persistent issues with computing educators and researchers, fostering a collaborative exploration of strategies to navigate the educational implications of advancing generative AI technologies. Aligned with this goal of building an inclusive learning community, our BoF is led by globally distributed leaders to facilitate multiple coordinated discussions that can lead to a broader conversation about the role of LLMs in CS education.

Abstract:Although generative artificial intelligence (AI) is not new, recent technological breakthroughs have transformed its capabilities across many domains. These changes necessitate new attention from educators and specialized training within the atmospheric sciences and related fields. Enabling students to use generative AI effectively, responsibly, and ethically is critically important for their academic and professional preparation. Educators can also use generative AI to create engaging classroom activities, such as active learning modules and games, but must be aware of potential pitfalls and biases. There are also ethical implications in using tools that lack transparency, as well as equity concerns for students who lack access to more sophisticated paid versions of generative AI tools. This article is written for students and educators alike, particularly those who want to learn more about generative AI in education, including use cases, ethical concerns, and a brief history of its emergence. Sample user prompts are also provided across numerous applications in education and the atmospheric and related sciences. While we don't have solutions for some broader ethical concerns surrounding the use of generative AI in education, our goal is to start a conversation that could galvanize the education community around shared goals and values.

Abstract:What role can generative AI have an art and design education? Given that we are in a year of change as open-source Open AI systems shift how we teach, learn, and assess in times of question-answering chatbot and personal assistance tools. Applying a post-human approach (Blaikie, et al, 2020) to education might help us rethink pedagogy (Wessels, et al, 2022), knowledge creation and scholarly publication for knowledge sharing. In this SoTEL Symposium presentation/discussion with the ASCILITE MLSIG I propose a move away from a humanist world view that continues to shape our thoughts around the binary of teacher-learner within our walled disciplinary and consider how we might Incorporate generative AI tools in the curriculum to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with the more-than human. What if we shifted teaching and learning to facilitate new ways of being on the planet, so that we prioritised ourselves, one another as well as non-human and more-than-humans in our educational ecologies. Building the digital literacies and computational thinking capabilities (George-Reyes, et al, 2021) to learn with GAI will create opportunities to thinking about the world and all its space and places, as interconnected and entangled. In this trendsetter webinar I pose a series of questions and prompts that I had in conversation with Chatty G (ChatGPT) to consider how we might imagine and understand the world in different ways so that we might integrate generative AI and into our education ecologies in higher education. Generative AI in Education: A Study of Educators' Awareness, Sentiments, and Influencing Factors

Abstract:The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and the expanding integration of large language models (LLMs) have ignited a debate about their application in education. This study delves into university instructors' experiences and attitudes toward AI language models, filling a gap in the literature by analyzing educators' perspectives on AI's role in the classroom and its potential impacts on teaching and learning. The objective of this research is to investigate the level of awareness, overall sentiment towardsadoption, and the factors influencing these attitudes for LLMs and generative AI-based tools in higher education. Data was collected through a survey using a Likert scale, which was complemented by follow-up interviews to gain a more nuanced understanding of the instructors' viewpoints. The collected data was processed using statistical and thematic analysis techniques. Our findings reveal that educators are increasingly aware of and generally positive towards these tools. We find no correlation between teaching style and attitude toward generative AI. Finally, while CS educators show far more confidence in their technical understanding of generative AI tools and more positivity towards them than educators in other fields, they show no more confidence in their ability to detect AI-generated work.

Abstract:The recent surge in generative AI technologies, such as large language models and diffusion models, has boosted the development of AI applications in various domains, including science, finance, and education. Concurrently, adaptive learning, a concept that has gained substantial interest in the educational sphere, has proven its efficacy in enhancing students' learning efficiency. In this position paper, we aim to shed light on the intersectional studies of these two methods, which combine generative AI with adaptive learning concepts. By presenting discussions about the benefits, challenges, and potentials in this field, we argue that this union will contribute significantly to the development of the next-stage learning format in education.

Generative AI in Computing Education: Perspectives of Students and Instructors

Abstract:Generative models are now capable of producing natural language text that is, in some cases, comparable in quality to the text produced by people. In the computing education context, these models are being used to generate code, code explanations, and programming exercises. The rapid adoption of these models has prompted multiple position papers and workshops which discuss the implications of these models for computing education, both positive and negative. This paper presents results from a series of semi-structured interviews with 12 students and 6 instructors about their awareness, experiences, and preferences regarding the use of tools powered by generative AI in computing classrooms. The results suggest that Generative AI (GAI) tools will play an increasingly significant role in computing education. However, students and instructors also raised numerous concerns about how these models should be integrated to best support the needs and learning goals of students. We also identified interesting tensions and alignments that emerged between how instructors and students prefer to engage with these models. We discuss these results and provide recommendations related to curriculum development, assessment methods, and pedagogical practice. As GAI tools become increasingly prevalent, it's important to understand educational stakeholders' preferences and values to ensure that these tools can be used for good and that potential harms can be mitigated.

Abstract:In this special issue, we explore the opportunities and challenges of using Generative AI (GenAI), in particular, text generators in higher education learning and teaching. As GenAI has become increasingly popular with many staff and students, this special issue provides an overview of the current state of the field and offers insights into future research. This introduction paper consists of four parts. It begins by providing an overview of AI and Generative AI, identifying the gap and framing the special issue relating to the gaps. The second part explores the opportunities and challenges of GenAI in higher education, as identified in the literature. The third part provides an overview of the papers included in the special issue. The final part is the self-reflection of the lead author. The special issue aims to serve as a valuable resource for higher education stakeholders, such as students, practitioners, researchers and managers. We hope this collection will help advance knowledge and future research, encourage innovation and inform evidence-based policy and practices in the field of Generative AI in higher education.

Abstract:The software development industry is amid another disruptive paradigm change - adopting the use of generative AI (GAI) assistants for programming. Whilst AI is already used in various areas of software engineering, GAI technologies, such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT, have ignited peoples' imaginations (and fears). It is unclear how the industry will adapt, but the move to integrate these technologies by large software companies, such as Microsoft (GitHub, Bing) and Google (Bard), is a clear indication of intent and direction. We performed exploratory interviews with industry professionals to understand current practice and challenges, which we incorporate into our vision of a future of software development education and make some pedagogical recommendations.

Abstract:The computing education community has a rich history of pedagogical innovation designed to support students in introductory courses, and to support teachers in facilitating student learning. Very recent advances in artificial intelligence have resulted in code generation models that can produce source code from natural language problem descriptions -- with impressive accuracy in many cases. The wide availability of these models and their ease of use has raised concerns about potential impacts on many aspects of society, including the future of computing education. In this paper, we discuss the challenges and opportunities such models present to computing educators, with a focus on introductory programming classrooms. We summarize the results of two recent articles, the first evaluating the performance of code generation models on typical introductory-level programming problems, and the second exploring the quality and novelty of learning resources generated by these models. We consider likely impacts of such models upon pedagogical practice in the context of the most recent advances at the time of writing.

Abstract:Because of the rapid development and increasing public availability of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) models and tools, educational institutions and educators must immediately reckon with the impact of students using GenAI. There is limited prior research on computing students' use and perceptions of GenAI. In anticipation of future advances and evolutions of GenAI, we capture a snapshot of student attitudes towards and uses of yet emerging GenAI, in a period of time before university policies had reacted to these technologies. We surveyed all computer science majors in a small engineering-focused R1 university in order to: (1) capture a baseline assessment of how GenAI has been immediately adopted by aspiring computer scientists; (2) describe computing students' GenAI-related needs and concerns for their education and careers; and (3) discuss GenAI influences on CS pedagogy, curriculum, culture, and policy. We present an exploratory qualitative analysis of this data and discuss the impact of our findings on the emerging conversation around GenAI and education.

Abstract:Recently, ChatGPT, a cutting-edge large language model, has emerged as a powerful Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tool with the capacity to influence education. ChatGPT provides ample opportunities for learners, researchers, educators, and practitioners to achieve the intended learning outcomes in various disciplines. This special issue examines the diverse applications and implications of GenAI tools including ChatGPT in education, highlighting their potential to enhance teaching and learning across various contexts. Key findings from seventeen studies collected in this special issue demonstrate that GenAI tools can significantly improve educational outcomes by providing personalized feedback, facilitating language learning, and supporting both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The findings emphasize GenAI’s capacity to increase learner engagement and motivation, yet also underscore the need for robust ethical guidelines and human oversight due to potential issues with privacy, bias, and accuracy. This special issue also highlights the challenges GenAI faces, such as limitations in contextual understanding and its impact on critical thinking skills. In addition, it provides a foundational framework for exploring effective and responsible GenAI integration, aiming to enrich educational experiences. We conclude that future research should focus on the longitudinal effects of GenAI tools on learning outcomes, developing ethical frameworks for their use, and ensuring their adaptability to diverse learner populations to promote inclusive educational practices.

Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) was incorporated into a competitive programming event that targeted undergraduate students, including those with little programming experience. The competition incorporated a range of challenge design approaches that promoted meaningful interaction with generative AI system, even while keeping the challenge difficulty level to an appropriate level. An analysis of survey responses and competition data showed that this format lowered barriers to participation, successfully engaged students throughout the competition, and increased the likelihood that they would participate in a similar event. In an extension of this work, a professional development workshop for high school teachers is being developed, along with a contest for high school students. Participant surveys and logs of interaction with the contest and generative AI systems will be analyzed to measure the effect of generative AI on student self-efficacy and suggest ways to integrate generative AI instruction into computer science curriculum.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), such as ChatGPT, has taken the world by storm. ChatGPT attracted 1 million users in 5 days and 100 million users in 2 months since its launch in November 2022. In this first article of a two-part series, we discuss the overall dynamic frontier of GenAI, its potential uses and benefits in education, essential abilities in the age of GenAI, and the corresponding issues and concerns of this new technology. In the next article of this series, we will expand upon the discussion of the dynamic frontier of GenAI to examine various aspects related to GenAI in education in international contexts.
From Automation to Cognition: Redefining the Roles of Educators and Generative AI in Computing Education

Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) offers numerous opportunities to revolutionise teaching and learning in Computing Education (CE). However, educators have expressed concerns that students may over-rely on GenAI and use these tools to generate solutions without engaging in the learning process. While substantial research has explored GenAI use in CE, and many Computer Science (CS) educators have expressed their opinions and suggestions on the subject, there remains little consensus on implementing curricula and assessment changes. In this paper, we describe our experiences with using GenAI in CS-focused educational settings and the changes we have implemented accordingly in our teaching in recent years since the popularisation of GenAI. From our experiences, we propose two primary actions for the CE community: 1) redesign take-home assignments to incorporate GenAI use and assess students on their process of using GenAI to solve a task rather than simply on the final product; 2) redefine the role of educators to emphasise metacognitive aspects of learning, such as critical thinking and self-evaluation. This paper presents and discusses these stances and outlines several practical methods to implement these strategies in CS classrooms. Then, we advocate for more research addressing the concrete impacts of GenAI on CE, especially those evaluating the validity and effectiveness of new teaching practices.
