Abstract:Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common male disease characterized by the inability of the penis to achieve or maintain sufficient erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse for a sustained duration, typically exceeding 3 months. [ 1 ] Epidemiological investigations [ 2 ] indicate a high prevalence of ED among adult males in China, reaching up to 41.6%. The pathogenesis of ED is not fully elucidated, but it is likely related to factors such as vascular health, endocrine function, and psychological well-being. [ 3 , 4 ] Research has shown a strong association between obesity and the occurrence of ED, suggesting that obesity is an independent risk factor for ED. [ 5–7 ] Leptin and insulin resistance, low testosterone levels, and endothelial dysfunction in obese individuals are believed to contribute to the development of erectile dysfunction. [ 8 ] China has a significant population with obesity, with a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity among males compared to females. Furthermore, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults in China is on the rise. [ 9–11 ] While ED itself is not a life-threatening condition, it can negatively impact quality of life, sexual relationships, and family stability. Additionally, ED may be an early indicator of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. [ 12 , 13 ] Therefore, focusing on the prevention and treatment of male obesity with ED is of particular importance.
