Abstract:For most knowledge teams,task conflicts resulted from individual cognitive differences cannot be avoided.Conflicts of this kind are both constructive and destructive,the outcomes of which depend mainly on the acts and performances of both sides involved in the interaction.In order to manage intra-group task conflicts effectively,it seems necessary and important to understand and grasp the logic and the rule of team members.Generally,conflicts are considered to be typical face events for most Chinese.The selection and combination of various conflict-handling modes are in essence a manipulation of face.Uncovering the mechanism of face will help to improve the management of task conflicts in a knowledge team,and to keep the conflicts away from escalation.This study demonstrates that perceived face threats do act as a mediator in the process of intra-group task conflicts.Team members,interacting during the conflicts,will perceive at least three kinds of face threats,which include face threats based on interpersonal relationships,individual abilities,and morality.They choose the ″right″ mode to handle intra-group task conflicts in line with their perceptions.

Abstract:Many organizations are using knowledge management systems (KMSs) to facilitate knowledge sharing. However, few studies have empirically investigated how individual characteristics and organizational work practices influence knowledge sharing. Based on accountability theory, the person–situation interactional psychology perspective, and the five-factor model of personality, this study uses a quasi-experimental design to investigate how two accountability-inducing management practices—evaluation and evaluation plus reward—and their interactions with personality characteristics influence knowledge sharing using a KMS. One hundred employees from a Chinese software company participated in the study. The authors found that both evaluation and evaluation plus reward had a positive relationship with knowledge sharing. Greater levels of knowledge sharing occurred in the evaluation-plus-reward condition compared with the evaluation condition. Also, knowledge sharing was influenced by the interaction between evaluation plus reward and conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. Implications of the study results for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to explore the effects of normative and hedonic motivations on continuous knowledge contribution, and how past contribution experience moderates the effects of the motivations on continuous knowledge contribution. Design/methodology/approach Based on goal-framing theory, the present study proposes a comprehensive theoretical model by integrating normative and hedonic motivations, past contribution experience and continuous knowledge contribution. The data for virtual community members' activities were collected using the Python Scrapy crawler. Logit regression was used to validate the integrative model. Findings The results show that both normative motivation (reflected by generalized reciprocity and social learning) and hedonic motivation (reflected by peer recognition and online attractiveness) are positively associated with continuous knowledge contribution. Moreover, these effects are found to be significantly influenced by members' past knowledge contribution experience. Specifically, the results suggest that past knowledge contribution experience undermines the influence of generalized reciprocity on continuous knowledge contribution but strengthens the effect of peer recognition and online attractiveness. Originality/value Although the emerging literature on continuous knowledge contribution mainly focuses on motivations as antecedents that promote continuous knowledge contribution, most of these studies assume that the relationship between motivating mechanisms and continuous knowledge contribution does not change over time. The study is one of the initial studies to examine whether and how the influence of multiple motivations evolves relative to levels of past contribution experience.

Abstract:We use a large-scale field experiment on Wikipedia to examine the effect of motivation on the contributions of domain experts to public information goods. We find that experts are more interested in contributing when we mention the private benefit of contribution, such as the likely citation of their work. More importantly, using cosine similarity, we find that greater matching accuracy between a recommended Wikipedia article and an expert’s paper abstract increases both contribution quantity and quality. Our results show the potential of combining machine learning tools with field experiments to study drivers of prosocial behavior.

Abstract:A central concern for the long-term vibrancy of virtual communities is how to effectively motivate continuous contributions from community members. To address this challenge, a series of motivation factors that range from self-interest driven to prosocial-oriented motives have been identified by scholars. As members participate in continuous contributions and community activities alike, their status or positions within the virtual communities would change, which may influence their cognition and behavior. While status-seeking can lead to greater contributions and a better performance, research has yet to study in a comprehensive manner how an individual's status-standing shape one's recognition and behavior in a systematic way. To fill this research gap, a comprehensive theoretical model based on the status theory of collective action is proposed to explain how status standing moderates the impact of different types of motivations (self-interest vs. prosocial) on continuous contributions in virtual communities. Our findings suggest that improved status-standing can enhance the motivational incentives of virtual rewards and peer recognition, while boosting the prosocial motivation of opinion leadership to contribute content in virtual communities. Overall, this study not only suggests a comprehensive view of our current understandings regarding contribution behavior in virtual communities, but also yields deep insights into how motivational mechanism of virtual communities can be reasonably designed and properly used to promote continuous contributions.

Abstract:imulated team experiments were conducted to examine group composition characteristics as antecedents of shared mental models in two different information-sharing teamwork settings.Sixty-four teams were formed with 192 university students and worked on a complex cooperative task.The results indicated that the social value oriented composition and composition of individual mental model of team members showed a promising main effect on similarity of shared mental models,but information sharing did not show a main effect on the shared mental models as an expected contextual variable.In addition,based on a three-way interaction analysis,the two compositions significantly interacted with information sharing and indicated that similarity of shared mental models was an expected moderator.The theoretical implications of the present study and directions for future research were also discussed.

Abstract:There were few scientific quantitative methods in evaluating knowledge contribution of enterprise staff.In order to tackle this problem,an evaluation model and method for knowledge contribution of enterprise staff was proposed.With the help of Web 2.0 technologies,the method divided knowledge contribution into participation contribution,efficiency contribution and innovation contribution,which were based on staff's behaviors of knowledge publishing,evaluation and application.And then an evaluation model of staff's knowledge contribution was constructed.According to this model,knowledge evaluation algorithm and staff's knowledge contribution evaluation algorithm were put forward.Finally,a simulation test was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In recent years, with the increase of users in wikis, “free rider problem” has been serious. Network Centrality and Contributions to Online Public Good-The Case of Chinese Wikipedia.

Abstract:Internet technology enables virtual collaboration and plays an important role in knowledge production. However, collaborative technology will not function without conducive underlying social mechanisms. Previous research mostly investigates individual-level motivations of editors, with only a few exceptions examining the collaboration relationships. In this paper, we take a structural perspective and investigate the impact of positions (centralities) of editors in the collaboration networks on their efforts and effort allocations. To achieve this, we empirically reconstruct the dynamic collaboration network of Chinese Wikipedia for the period between 2002 and 2007. Based on a dynamic view of the network, we compose a panel data set that covers both the contribution behavior and network position characteristics of Wikipedia editors. We strengthen our causal interpretation by leveraging the exogenous block that prevented Wikipedia editors in Mainland China from accessing the website. We find distinctive effort allocation patterns that strongly correlate with network centrality measures. This confirms theoretical predictions derived in recent developments in network economics and social network theories. This research enhances our understanding about how collaboration network structure shapes individuals' behavior in online collaboration platforms.

Abstract:User contribution determines the success of online knowledge communities. As user contributions are voluntary, many online communities failed due to declining user contributions. Hence, it becomes critical to understand and design mechanisms that are effective to motivate user contributions. This paper studies the effects of two mechanisms, virtual rewards and reputation, on the quantity and quality of user contributions in online community. We analyze user-level panel data from a representative knowledge sharing platform Stack Exchange.com, and investigate whether these two mechanisms improve the quantity and quality of user contributions. Surprisingly, we find that a user's reputation does not directly motivate contribution. It is the relative reputation (ranking) that serves as the motivation. This finding highlights the importance of peer effect and social comparison in the incentive design of open collaboration platforms. Our study provides implications for platform designers on how to motivate community participants and build sustainable online knowledge communities.

Abstract:Modern information technology has enabled many community-based innovations, in which looselyconnected contributors, dispersed across organizational and geographical boundaries, collaborate via the Internet. This community-based model of knowledge creation differs considerably from traditional rm-based production process and has stimulated curiosity of scholars from a variety of elds. Two well-known examples are open source software (OSS) projects (e.g., the Apache project) and open content production (e.g., Wikipedia). In OSS projects, hundreds and thousands of programmers collaborate on some software code base. In open content production, contributors codify some knowledge base with wiki, a piece of server software that allows them to freely create and edit Web page content.

Abstract:We study the effect of collaboration network structure on the contribution behavior of participating editors in Wikipedia. Collaboration in Wikipedia is organized around articles, and any two editors co-editing an article have a collaborative relationship. Based on the economic theories about network games and social role theory, we propose that an editor's position in the collaboration network influences the editor's decisions about her total contribution as well as the allocation of her efforts. By leveraging panel data collected from the Chinese language version of Wikipedia and a natural experiment resulting from blocking it in mainland China, we find strong support for the proposed effect of network position on contribution behavior. Our analysis further reveals that different aspects of an individual's network position have distinct implications. This research enhances our understanding about how collaboration network structure shapes individual behavior in online mass collaboration platforms.

Abstract:Taking the perspective of innovative knowledge management, this study aimed to investigate the stimulation mechanism of continuous innovative knowledge contribution (CIKC). Through a quantitative study conducted in an open innovation community, we modeled a stimulus-organism-response framework to conduct a path analysis from the external environment to internal cognition, and then to knowledge contribution, and filled in the gaps in the mediating and moderating mechanisms. We focused on the stimuli of knowledge contribution, in view of both quantity and quality. Panel data from six periods in one year was collected for dynamic analysis, and we used the fixed effect model to test our hypotheses of mediation effect, moderation effect, and mediated-moderation effect. There were some interesting findings, showing that user's self-efficacy plays a partial mediating role in the quantity, rather than the quality, of CIKC; meanwhile, the users' knowledge level plays a moderating role, and there is a negative moderating mechanism of knowledge level in the process from participation value to the quality of CIKC.

Abstract:Based on motivational theory, this study investigated the effect of users' knowledge seeking on users' knowledge contribution in question-and-answer (Q&A) communities. We collected 4643 samples from the largest social Q&A platform in China (Zhihu) and applied a mediation effect test to the data. The results showed that knowledge seeking affects intrinsic motivations (altruism and self-efficacy) and extrinsic motivations (social support, group identity, and reputation), further affecting knowledge contribution. Our findings indicated that Q&A communities should be concerned with users' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to ensure balanced knowledge exchange on social Q&A platforms, ultimately fostering long-term stability and growth. Existing research has mainly focused on a single behavioral state, such as knowledge seeking or knowledge contribution, and has paid little attention to the connection between these two types of user information behaviors. This study aimed to fill this gap by revealing the mechanisms through which users' knowledge seeking affects their knowledge contribution.
