Abstract:Uncertainty measure in data fusion applications is a hot topic; quite a few methods have been proposed to measure the degree of uncertainty in Dempster-Shafer framework. However, the existing methods pay little attention to the scale of the frame of discernment (FOD), which means a loss of information. Due to this reason, the existing methods cannot measure the difference of uncertain degree among different FODs. In this paper, an improved belief entropy is proposed in Dempster-Shafer framework. The proposed belief entropy takes into consideration more available information in the body of evidence (BOE), including the uncertain information modeled by the mass function, the cardinality of the proposition, and the scale of the FOD. The improved belief entropy is a new method for uncertainty measure in Dempster-Shafer framework. Based on the new belief entropy, a decision-making approach is designed. The validity of the new belief entropy is verified according to some numerical examples and the proposed decision-making approach.

Abstract:Decision-making in water management requires the delivery of accurate scientific information. However, the task is challenging under the situation where a large amount of uncertainty exists in the available information (e.g., model outputs). This paper investigates the effect of uncertainty on the ranking of options in water management. Different methods for ranking the management options under uncertainty are reviewed and they account for only partial uncertainty information in model outputs. To consider the full uncertainty information, a new ranking procedure is proposed in this paper, which is capable of providing more information to decision makers and at the same time taking their opinions on uncertainty into consideration. The ranking is achieved by conducting pair-wise comparison of management options, on the basis of the risk defined by the probability of obtaining an unacceptable ranking and the mean difference in model outputs in pair-wise comparison. An application example is presented to illustrate the use of the proposed ranking approach. Furthermore, the sensitivity of management option ranking to different ranking methods and to model uncertainty is also investigated.

In this paper, a compromise method has been proposed for transforming basic probability assignment to probability function. The novel transformation method can acquire better balance between easy decision-making and high risk. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the rationality and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:In decision-making analysis, the description on decision makers' risk attitude under uncertainty is a focus topic. This paper presents a novel decision analysis framework that considers uncertainty and risk using the cumulative prospect theory. The proposed approach describes uncertain preference information using interval-valued fuzzy sets, maintaining this representation without converting intervals into crisp numbers throughout the entire process. To quantify the distance between interval-valued fuzzy sets, we introduce a comprehensive interval-valued distance model that accounts for multiple situations determined based on the relative positions between intervals. Afterwards, some related theorems about the proposed interval-valued distance model are explored mathematically. Then, with the aid of different reference points and interval-valued distance model, the overall interval-valued prospect value of each alternative is investigated. Finally, an Enhanced Minimax Regret-based (EMR) approach is developed to compare and rank the obtained overall interval-valued prospect values. An illustrative example, accompanied by detailed discussions, is provided to demonstrate the flexibility and superiority of the proposed decision analysis framework.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a new and efficient solution approach for the problem of decision making under uncertainty, which can be formulated as decision making in a belief space, over a possibly high-dimensional state space. Typically, to solve a decision problem, one should identify the optimal action from a set of candidates, according to some objective. We claim that one can often generate and solve an analogous yet simplified decision problem, which can be solved more efficiently. A wise simplification method can lead to the same action selection, or one for which the maximal loss in optimality can be guaranteed. Furthermore, such simplification is separated from the state inference and does not compromise its accuracy, as the selected action would finally be applied on the original state. First, we present the concept for general decision problems and provide a theoretical framework for a coherent formulation of the approach. We then practically apply these ideas to decision problems in the belief space, which can be simplified by considering a sparse approximation of their initial belief. The scalable belief sparsification algorithm we provide is able to yield solutions which are guaranteed to be consistent with the original problem. We demonstrate the benefits of the approach in the solution of a realistic active-SLAM problem and manage to significantly reduce computation time, with no loss in the quality of solution. This work is both fundamental and practical, and holds numerous possible extensions.

Abstract:The multiple attribute decision making (MADM) with interval grey uncertain linguistic (IGUL) is a topic of current interest, and various methods have been developed. However, few approaches taking the behavioral characteristics of the decision maker into account. In this paper, an extension of TODIM (i.e., an acronym in Portuguese of interactive and multiple attribute decision making) method, in which three behavioral characteristics of the decision maker (i.e., risk aversion, reference dependence and loss aversion) are considered, is proposed. First, the d-Hamming distance is defined to deal with the interval grey uncertain linguistic variables by considering the level of the decision maker's risk aversion, and its distinguish ability is validated by compared to the classical Hamming distance. Then, the details of the TODIM. SIR method is demonstrated: (i) considering the reference dependence behaviour of the decision maker, the positive-ideal alternative (i.e., PIA) and the negative-ideal alternative (i.e., NIA) are defined, and the gain and loss degrees of each alternative relative to NIA and PIA are computed based on the delta-Hamming distance; (ii) taking the loss aversion behaviour of the decision maker into account, the perceived dominance degree of the decision maker for the gain and the loss is calculated; (iii) according to the idea of the Superiority and Inferiority Ranking method (i.e., SIR, an outranking method), the Gain-flow and the Loss-flow are defined, and the partial ranking orders and the complete ranking order are obtained. Finally, two numerical examples are given to illustrate the robustness and validity of the method, and a comparative analysis is also conducted to compare the TODIM. SIR method with both the classical TODIM method and the classical SIR method.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method for ranking interval grey numbers to address the challenge in multi-criteria decision making problems with interval grey numbers has been proposed. This new method involves the risk preferences of decision makers. First, we propose a new method to rank the interval grey numbers by comparing the possibility degree or whitened-value. Second, we classify the decision makers into three different types according to their risk preferences then we establish the corresponding risk preference assumptions to solve the problem that different interval grey numbers with the same possibility degree or whitened-value. Finally, we use a realistic voting example to demonstrate the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In a typical formulation of decision-making under uncertainty, a decision-maker must choose a single-optimal option among many possible options. However, the problem of selecting a unique and optimal choice has remained a significant challenge to solve. In this article, we propose a new interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy soft set (IVIFSS) based decision-making approach to address this problem. The proposed approach is based on the choice value and score value of membership/nonmembership degrees. Furthermore, three parameter reduction algorithms are proposed. We apply the proposed approaches on a real application to demonstrate their working and effectiveness. We also compare the proposed approach against the adjustable IVIFSSs approach and show that the proposed approach has lower computation overhead and enable a decision-maker to choose top options to make a proper decision.

Abstract:In decision-making systems, conflict management is an important concept that represents the degree of dissimilarity between bodies of evidence, ultimately enhancing decision-making performance. Jousselme's distance, as the most commonly emoployed one so far, is used to measure the distance between basic belief assignments (BBAs) in Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory. However, the Jousselme's distance has limitations, which can also be demonstrated in other methods theoretically. To address this issue, a BBA refinement method and a novel multi-granularity distance are proposed in this paper. Moreover, the methods are verified to be effective in the problems that Jousselme's distance cannot satisfy. Additionally, a hypothetical physical model is employed to verify the practicability of the proposed methods with multiple granularity. Furthermore, based on the proposed multiple granularity distance, a novel decision-making algorithm is designed. The results validate that the proposed decision-making method is beneficially applicable to classification scenarios and different real-world data.

Abstract:This position paper reflects on the state-of-the-art in decision-making under uncertainty. A classical assumption is that probabilities can sufficiently capture all uncertainty in a system. In this paper, the focus is on the uncertainty that goes beyond this classical interpretation, particularly by employing a clear distinction between aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty. The paper features an overview of Markov decision processes (MDPs) and extensions to account for partial observability and adversarial behavior. These models sufficiently capture aleatoric uncertainty but fail to account for epistemic uncertainty robustly. Consequently, we present a thorough overview of so-called uncertainty models that exhibit uncertainty in a more robust interpretation. We show several solution techniques for both discrete and continuous models, ranging from formal verification, over control-based abstractions, to reinforcement learning. As an integral part of this paper, we list and discuss several key challenges that arise when dealing with rich types of uncertainty in a model-based fashion.

Abstract:Dempster-Shafer theory (D-S theory) is widely used in decision making under the uncertain environment. Ranking basic belief assignments (BBAs) now is an open issue. Existing evidence distance measures cannot rank the BBAs in the situations when the propositions have their own ranking order or their inherent measure of closeness. To address this issue, a new ranking evidence distance (RED) measure is proposed. Compared with the existing evidence distance measures including the Jousselme's distance and the distance between betting commitments, the proposed RED measure is much more general due to the fact that the order of the propositions in the systems is taken into consideration. If there is no order or no inherent measure of closeness in the propositions, our proposed RED measure is reduced to the existing evidence distance. Numerical examples show that the proposed RED measure is an efficient alternative to rank BBAs in decision making under uncertain environment.

Abstract:Recent advances in decision making have incorporated both risk and ambiguity in decision theory and optimization methods. These methods implement a variety of uncertainty representations from probabilistic and non-probabilistic foundations, including traditional probability theory, sets of probability measures, uncertainty sets, ambiguity sets, possibility theory, evidence theory, fuzzy measures, and imprecise probability. The choice of uncertainty representation impacts the expressiveness and tractability of the decision models. We survey recent approaches for representing uncertainty in both decision making and optimization to clarify the trade-offs among the alternative representations. Robust and distributionally robust optimization are surveyed, with particular attention to standard form ambiguity sets. Applications of uncertainty and decision models are also reviewed, with a focus on recent optimization applications. These applications highlight common practices and potential research gaps. The intersection of behavioral decision making and robust optimization is a promising area for future research and there is also opportunity for further advances in distributionally robust optimization in sequential and multi-agent settings.

Abstract:Considering the intuitionistic fuzzy multi-attribute decision-making problem that the decision makers with bounded rationality psychological characteristics and attribute weights and probability information of situation are completely unknown,a multi-attribute decision-making based on the prospect theory and Dempster-Shafer theory was proposed.Firstly,the probabilites of the states were calculated by Dempster-Shafer theory,and the decision-making weight functions of the states were determined.Then,the normal distribution probability density function was utilized to construct the intuitionistic fuzzy reference point.Based on the difference between the attribute value and the reference point,the value function matrix and the prospect value matrix were obtained.In addition,an optimization model was developed to derive the attribute weights with the principle of maximizing the comprehensive prospect value,and all the alternatives were further ordered.Finally,the proposed approach was applied to a numerical example about the selection of game products.The experimental results show that the decision-making results are reasonable and reliable,and the actual situation can be reflected.

Abstract:A decision maker starts from a judgmental decision and moves to the closest boundary of the confidence interval. This statistical decision rule is admissible and does not perform worse than the judgmental decision with a probability equal to the confidence level, which is interpreted as a coefficient of statistical risk aversion. The confidence level is related to the decision maker's aversion to uncertainty and can be elicited with laboratory experiments using urns a la Ellsberg. The decision rule is applied to a problem of asset allocation for an investor whose judgmental decision is to keep all her wealth in cash.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel fuzzy multiple-attribute group decision-making approach based on expert reliability and the evidential reasoning (ER) rule in an interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy environment. First, to determine the reliabilities of experts, an objective method is developed by combining the similarity between the assessments provided before and after group discussion. Second, the proposed approach extends the ER rule to the case where belief degrees are intervals and employs it to combine experts’ assessments. Hereinto, several optimization models are established to produce the aggregated assessments of the alternatives. Then, the overall priority degree of each alternative can be obtained according to the aggregated assessments and further utilized to yield a ranking of alternatives. Finally, a shopping center site selection problem is analyzed by the proposed approach to demonstrate its validity and applicability.

Abstract:Dynamic decision-making is the process of seeking optimal choice with multiple related attributes under the multi-time-point situation. Considering that the time-varying nature of decision information can have a specific impact on the psychology of decision makers, in this paper, a dynamic decision-making method based on the cumulative prospect theory is proposed. Combining this with infinite parameterization of fuzzy soft sets, a time series interval triangular fuzzy soft set is presented, which has characteristics of boundedness, monotonicity, and symmetry. Then, based on the new information priority principle, the exponential decay model is used to determine the time weight coefficient, and a static fuzzy soft matrix is obtained. Furthermore, a method of calculating psychological utility values is proposed, in which the threshold-reference point set is introduced to analyze the psychological "profit and loss" values. Simultaneously, the time probability of the decision-making scenario is transformed into the corresponding weight function. On the basis of prospect maximization theory and maximum entropy theory, an optimization model for determining the weight of decision parameters is established. The cumulative prospect values of the alternatives are given to achieve the best choice for the alternatives. Finally, an example showed the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:To depict the influence of decision makers' risk psychology on the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making process, this paper proposes a new method based on prospect theory. Considering the risk attitude of the decision maker, we transform interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers into real numbers via a prospect value function and consequently derive the prospect decision matrices. Regarding the criteria weights that are incompletely known or completely unknown, a new nonlinear optimization model is developed to determine the criteria weights by considering the subjective and objective factors. Furthermore, we calculate the prospect projection of each alternative for the ideal solution and rank all the alternatives according to the prospect projection values. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the application of the developed approach.

Abstract:An improved interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy multi-attribute group decision-making method considering the risk preference of decision-makers is proposed to solve the multi-attribute group decision-making problem with interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers and the condition that the attribute weight information is completely unknown. Firstly, the decision-maker weight of each attribute is determined by combining similarity and proximity. In order to consider the influence of the decision-maker's risk preference on the decision result and avoid the asymptotic behavior of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy matrix, the risk aversion coefficient of the decision-maker is introduced and combined with the determined decision-maker's weight aggregation to form a group decision matrix. Then, the information of group decision matrix is mined, and the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy entropy is used to determine the attribute weight and relative weight. Based on the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy distance measure formula and the TODIM method, the overall superiority of each scheme relative to other schemes is obtained by calculating the superiority between schemes, and the optimal scheme is determined by comparing and sequencing. Finally, the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by an example of mechanical assembly supplier selection decision.

Abstract:This study examines decision theory based on interval type-2 fuzzy sets with linguistic information for the three-way decision approach by addressing the challenge of uncertainty for information analysis and fusion in subjective decision-making processes. First, the interval type-2 fuzzy linguistic term sets (IT2 FLTSs) are defined to represent and normalize the uncertain preference information in linguistic decision-making. Subsequently, perception computing based on computing with words paradigm is introduced to implement information fusion among different decision-makers in the linguistic information-based fuzzy logic reasoning process. Then, a three-way decision (3WD) theory based on IT2 FLTSs with fuzzy neighborhood covering is proposed, and the corresponded tri-partitioning strategies that satisfy Jaccard similarity of membership distributions are given. Finally, 3WD theory is applied to multi-criteria group decision-making with linguistic terms, and the algorithm steps are illustrated by a promising application under the background of coronavirus disease 2019 to reveal the feasibility and practicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy environment, a new multi-attribute three-way decision-making model is proposed to address the problems that the relative loss function in the existing multi-attribute three-way decision-making model does not consider the degree of hesitancy, and the alternative conditional probabilities are given subjectively by the authors, which lacks objectivity. First, three types of ideal solutions are introduced, and the correlation coefficients between the evaluated values and ideal solutions are utilized to construct alternative relative loss functions. Second, the ELECTRE-I method is generalized to the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy environment to establish the outranking relation and a method for estimating the conditional probability of alternatives is given. Finally, the model is used to experimentally analyze examples to illustrate the effectiveness and rationality of the model.
