Abstract:Quadruply bonded dimolybdenum complexes assembled with redox-active 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (dmit) ligand, Na[(ArNCHNAr)3Mo2(dmit)] (Ar = p-OCH3C6H4 (Na[2]), p-ClC6H4 (Na[3]), and p-CF3C6H4 (Na[4])), have been synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. In electrochemical measurements, the complexes show two successive redox waves which are attributed to the oxidation process Mo2 4+ → Mo2 5+ and the redox-active dmit unit, respectively. The potential difference (ΔE 1/2) between the redox events are fall in the range of 550–620 mV, reflecting a substantially strong electronic interaction between the dimolybdenum and dmit redox sites. The Mo2 5+ dyads 2, 3, and 4, obtained by the chemical oxidation with ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate, show a broad ligand (dmit) to metal (Mo2) charge transfer (LMCT) band in the near-IR region. Interestingly, this LMCT band has the vibronic feature analogous to the intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) band for the mixed-valence complexes. DFT calculations rationalize that the LMCT band arises from an electronic transition from the dmit-based HOMO–1 to the dimolybdenum-based HOMO, corresponding to donor(dmit)–acceptor(Mo2) charge transfer. The electronic coupling matrix elements (H ab), determined by optical analysis of the LMCT band using the generalized Mulliken-Hush (GMH) equation, fall in the range of 550–1090 cm−1 and increases with electron withdrawing character of the substituent present in supporting formamidinate ligands.
