Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and monolayer hexagonal BN (h-BN), are attractive for demonstrating fundamental physics in materials and potential applications in next-generation electronics. Atomic sheets containing hybridized bonds involving elements B, N and C over wide compositional ranges could result in new materials with properties complementary to those of graphene and h-BN, enabling a rich variety of electronic structures, properties and applications. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of large-area atomic layers of h-BNC material, consisting of hybridized, randomly distributed domains of h-BN and C phases with compositions ranging from pure BN to pure graphene. Our studies reveal that their structural features and bandgap are distinct from those of graphene, doped graphene and h-BN. This new form of hybrid h-BNC material enables the development of bandgap-engineered applications in electronics and optics and properties that are distinct from those of graphene and h-BN.

Abstract:Graphene has initiated intensive research efforts on 2D crystalline materials due to its extraordinary set of properties and the resulting host of possible applications. Here the authors report on the controllable large‐scale synthesis of C3N, a 2D crystalline, hole‐free extension of graphene, its structural characterization, and some of its unique properties. C3N is fabricated by polymerization of 2,3‐diaminophenazine. It consists of a 2D honeycomb lattice with a homogeneous distribution of nitrogen atoms, where both N and C atoms show a D6h‐symmetry. C3N is a semiconductor with an indirect bandgap of 0.39 eV that can be tuned to cover the entire visible range by fabrication of quantum dots with different diameters. Back‐gated field‐effect transistors made of single‐layer C3N display an on–off current ratio reaching 5.5 × 1010. Surprisingly, C3N exhibits a ferromagnetic order at low temperatures (<96 K) when doped with hydrogen. This new member of the graphene family opens the door for both fundamental basic research and possible future applications.
Penta-Pt2N4: an Ideal Two-Dimensional Material for Nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.
Two-dimensional multifunctional materials from endohedral fullerenes

Abstract:A multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) material is theoretically predicted based on systematic ab initio calculations and model simulations for the honeycomb lattice of endohedral fullerene W@C28 molecules. It has structural bistability, ferroelectricity, multiple magnetic phases, and excellent valley characters and can be easily functionalized by the proximity effect with magnetic isolators such as MnTiO3. Furthermore, we may also manipulate the valley Hall and spin transport properties by selectively switching a few W@C28 molecules to the metastable phase. These findings contribute to integrating different functions in a single 2D material for technological innovations.

Abstract:Moiré pattern superlattice formed by 2D van der Waals layered structures have attracted great attention for diverse applications. In experiments, the enhancement of catalytic performance in twisted bilayer systems is reported while its mechanism remains unclear. From high-accuracy first-principles and time-dependent ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics calculations, ultrafast interlayer charge transfer within 120 fs, excellent charge separation, improved visible-light absorption, and satisfactory overpotentials for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions in twisted graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) bilayers are found, which are beneficial to photocatalytic, photo-electrocatalytic, or electrocatalytic water splitting. This work provides insightful guidance to advanced nanocatalysis based on twisted layered materials.

Stacking-Dependent Spatial Charge Separation in Graphitic Carbonic Nitride layers

Abstract:We reveal the existence of stacking-dependent spatial(SDS) charge separation in graphitic carbonic nitride (g-C3N4) layers, with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In g-C3N4 bilayers, such SDS charge separation is found in particular effective for top valence bands that can drive electrons 100% away from one layer to the other. However, for bottom conduction ones, it results in little charge redistribution between layers. As spatial charge separation naturally suppresses the electron-hole recombination, that makes g-C3N4 layers with proper stacking much more efficient for harvesting solar energy in photovoltaic or photocatalytic applications. The SDS charge separation has been understood as a result of the inter-layer quantum entanglement from those g-C3N4 band electrons, whose unique chirality and phases in corner-atom-shared C6N10 units are relatively isolated and in tune only through the corner N atoms. The SDS charge separation in g-C3N4 may lead to an intrinsic way, i.e. without alien dopings, interfaces or electrical fields, to manipulate charge carriers in semiconducting materials. That may lead to new physics in the future optoelectronics or electronics of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as realizing the layer-selected charge transport through the bilayer or multi-layer 2D materials.

Abstract:As an analog of graphite, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been the hotspot in the materials science for its unique electronic structure. With medium band gap as well as thermal and chemical stability in ambient environment, it becomes one of the most promising photocatalytic materials. Intensive investigation has been focus on its photocatalytic performance for various reactions to date. What is more, controllable modulation of its electronic structure via doping or chemical functionalization is available. In addition, considerable attention has been paid on its photoelectronic application, such as light emitting device, photocathode, optical sensor, etc. Based on the electronic properties and pathway to modulate its electronic structure, in this review, we highlight the applications of g-C3N4 ranging from photocatalytic to photoelectronic materials. Abstract:Graphene was grown directly on porous nickel films, followed by the growth of controlled lengths of vertical carbon nanotube (CNT) forests that seamlessly emanate from the graphene surface. The metal-graphene-CNT structure is used to directly fabricate field-emitter devices and double-layer capacitors. The three-dimensional nanostructured hybrid materials, with better interfacial contacts and volume utilization, can stimulate the development of several energy-efficient technologies.

Abstract:The exotic physicochemical properties of TM atoms (3d, 4d, and 5d) embedded g-C4N3 as a novel class of 2D monolayers were systematically investigated through hierarchical high-throughput screening combined with spin-polarized first-principles calculations. After several rounds of efficient screening, 18 types of TM2@g-C4N3 monolayers with TM atoms embedded g-C4N3 substrate in large cavities on both sides in asymmetrical mode have been obtained. The effects of transition metal permutation and biaxial strain on the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties of TM2@g-C4N3 monolayers were comprehensively and deeply analyzed. By anchoring different TM atoms, various magnetic states including ferromagnetism (FM), antiferromagnetism (AFM), and nonmagnetism (NM) can be obtained. The Curie temperatures of Co2@ and Zr2@g-C4N3 are substantially improved up to 305 K and 245 K by applying –8% and –12% compression strains, respectively. This renders them promising candidates for low-dimensional spintronic device applications at or close to room temperature. Additionally, rich electronic states (metal, semiconductor, and half-metal) can be realized through biaxial strains or diverse metal permutation. Interestingly, Zr2@g-C4N3 monolayer undergoes a transition of FM semiconductor → FM half-metal → AFM metal under biaxial strains from –12% to 10%. Notably, the embedding of TM atoms dramatically enhances visible light absorption compared to the bare g-C4N3. Excitingly, the power conversion efficiency of Pt2@g-C4N3/BN heterojunction can be as high as 20.20%, which has great potential in solar cell applications. This large class of 2D multifunctional materials provide a candidate platform to develop promising applications under different circumstances and are expected to be prepared in the future.

Abstract:As cut-outs from a graphene sheet, nanographenes (NGs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are ideal cases with which to connect the world of molecules with that of bulk carbon materials. While various top-down approaches have been developed to produce such nanostructures in high yields, in the present perspective, precision structural control is emphasized for the length, width, and edge structures of NGs and GNRs achieved by modern solution and on-surface syntheses. Their structural possibilities have been further extended from "flatland" to the three-dimensional world, where chirality and handedness are the jewels in the crown. In addition to properties exhibited at the molecular level, self-assembly and thin-film structures cannot be neglected, which emphasizes the importance of processing techniques. With the rich toolkit of chemistry in hand, NGs and GNRs can be endowed with versatile properties and functions ranging from stimulated emission to spintronics and from bioimaging to energy storage, thus demonstrating their multitalents in present and future materials science.

Abstract:Graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes are carbon materials that exhibit excellent electrical conductivities and large specific surface areas. Theoretical work suggested that a covalently bonded graphene/single-walled carbon nanotube hybrid material would extend those properties to three dimensions, and be useful in energy storage and nanoelectronic technologies. Here we disclose a method to bond graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes seamlessly during the growth stage. The hybrid material exhibits a surface area >2,000 m(2) g(-1) with ohmic contact from the vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes to the graphene. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we observed the covalent transformation of sp(2) carbon between the planar graphene and the single-walled carbon nanotubes at the atomic resolution level. These findings provide a new benchmark for understanding the three-dimensional graphene/single-walled carbon nanotube-conjoined materials.

Abstract:The study of two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted considerable attention owing to their unique but fascinating properties. Here we systematically explored 2D carbon nitride monolayer sheets via the particle swarm optimization algorithm in combination with density functional theory. As a result of structural searches, four carbon nitride monolayers are predicted with stable stoichiometries of C5N2, C2N, C3N2 and CN. These predicted structures are semiconductors with an optimal band gap for solar cell application as indicated in our electronic simulations. Our current results also reveal the high tensile strengths of the predicted structures compared to known porous carbon nitride monolayer sheets. This work may provide a route for the design of 2D candidates in the application of photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:Carbon-based Materials that process wide bandgap, high mechanical performance, thermal stability and adjustable characteristics are highly demanded. Auxeticity is one of the factors that help enhancing the mechanical performance. Based on this, two series of stable layered carbon-based materials (namely -C2O and -C2O) are proposed. A new mechanism that multi-directional negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect is induced, which is attribute to the interaction of the modified pz orbitals between the interfacial layers. Such effect introduces the high mechanical properties of the materials. Besides, all the layered materials are ultrawide bandgap semiconductors, which endows them comparable dielectric properties of diamond. Furthermore, α-BK-C2O would maintain the complete configuration over 2000 K, guaranteeing an extremely high thermodynamic stability. So far, these advantages confer the predicted carbon-based layer materials as potential candidates in the future nanoelectronics, especially in the electromechanical devices.

Abstract:<p>Graphene is a single carbon layer of zero bandgap without edges and basal plane fluctuations. Engineering such infinite plane structure to finite size or appropriate structure will lead to different electronic structures, opening the bandgap of graphene and further achieving the target-specific applications. Multidisciplinary research efforts have been devoted to the development of diverse low-dimensional or hierarchical structures as well novel functionalities. To gain insights into the further development, this review comprehensively covers the recent progress of different graphene architectures categorized by dimensionality and their applications in electronics, biosciences, energy storage and conversion as well as environmental remediation. Although these materials are made of the same building block, they exhibit distinct properties and behaviors depending on how the carbon atoms in the graphene planar are bonded and on how the graphene sheets are functionalized to form larger structures. In order to highlight the structural characteristics of different dimensional graphene materials, this review independently starts with the properties of one kind of architecture, followed by various synthesis methods as well as potential applications. Finally, some insights and outlooks on the future directions and foreseeable challenges for graphene materials are also suggested as concluding remarks based on our own understanding.</p>

First-principles Study of Two Dimensional C3N and Its Derivatives.

Abstract:Here we have performed a comprehensive first-principles study for electronic and mechanical properties of newly synthesized C3N and its derivatives. The C3N monolayer is evaluated to be an indirect semiconductor with a HSE06 level bandgap of 1.09 eV, which can be effectively tuned by the number of layers, stacking order and B-doping concentration. With strong polar covalent bonds, C3N is predicted to be a superior stiff material with high in-plane Young's modulus (1090.0 GPa) and thermal dynamic stability (up to 2000 K). Remarkably, the C3N monolayer possesses a fascinating bending Poisson's effect, namely, bending induced lateral contraction, which is rare in other 2D materials. What's more, C3N nanosheets can be rolled into nanotubes with a tunable bandgap corresponding to the radius of curvature. Due to high stability, suitable band gap and superior mechanical strength, two dimensional C3N will be an ideal candidate in high-strength nano-electronic device applications.
Bandgap engineering of two-dimensional C3N bilayers

Abstract:Carbon materials such as graphene are of potential use in the development of electronic devices because of properties such as high mechanical strength and electrical and thermal conductivity. However, technical challenges, including difficulties in generating and modulating bandgaps, have limited the application of such materials. Here we show that the bandgaps of bilayers of two-dimensional C3N can be engineered by controlling the stacking order or applying an electric field. AA′ stacked C3N bilayers are found to have a smaller bandgap (0.30 eV) than AB′ stacked bilayers (0.89 eV), and both bandgaps are lower than that of monolayer C3N (1.23 eV). The larger bandgap reduction observed in AA′ stacked bilayers, compared with AB′ stacked bilayers, is attributed to the greater pz-orbital overlap. By applying an electric field of ~1.4 V nm−1, a bandgap modulation of around 0.6 eV can be achieved in the AB′ structure. We also show that the C3N bilayers can offer controllable on/off ratios, high carrier mobilities and photoelectric detection capabilities. The bandgaps of bilayers of two-dimensional C3N can be modulated by controlling the stacking order of the layers or by applying an electric field.

Abstract:Stimulated by the recent experimental synthesis of a new layered carbon allotrope-graphdiyne film, we provide the first systematic ab initio investigation of the structural and electronic properties of bilayer and trilayer graphdiyne and explore the possibility of tuning the energy gap via a homogeneous perpendicular electric field. Our results show that the most stable bilayer and trilayer graphdiyne both have their hexagonal carbon rings stacked in a Bernal way (AB and ABA style configuration, respectively). Bilayer graphdiyne with the most and the second most stable stacking arrangements have direct bandgaps of 0.35 eV and 0.14 eV, respectively; trilayer graphdiyne with stable stacking styles have bandgaps of 0.18-0.33 eV. The bandgaps of the semiconducting bilayer and trilayer graphdiyne generally decrease with increasing external vertical electric field, irrespective of the stacking style. Therefore, the possibility of tuning the electronic structure and optical absorption of bilayer and trilayer graphdiyne with an external electric field is suggested.
Two-dimensional fullerene-based monolayer materials assembled by C80 and Sc3N@C80

Abstract:Construction of two-dimensional (2D) materials using fullerenes as building blocks has attracted particular attention, primarily due to their ability to integrate desired functionalities into devices. However, realization of stable 2D phases of polymerized fullerenes remains a big challenge. Here, we propose two stable 2D monolayer phases with covalently bridged C80 cages, namely α-C80-2D and β-C80-2D, which are semiconductors with strong absorption in the long wave range and appreciable carrier mobility, respectively. The high stability originates from the bond energy released by the [2+2] cycloaddition polymerization of C80 is greater than the deformation energy of a cage. Starting from α-C80-2D, endohedral incorporation of the Sc3N molecule into each C80 cage leads to 2D semiconductors of α-Sc3N@C80-2D and α'-Sc3N@C80-2D, which possess exceptional stability and diverse physical properties, including unique electronic band structures, strong optical absorption in the visible (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) regime, and anisotropic optical characteristics. Remarkably, a temperature-induced order-disorder transition in the α-Sc3N@C80-2D phase has been observed at elevated temperatures above 600 K. These findings expand the family of 2D carbon materials and provide useful clue for the potential applications of fullerene-assembled monolayer networks.

Abstract:Graphene and fullerene, two types of C allotropes with very different structures and properties, have attracted considerable attention from the scientific community as new forms of carbon for several decades. It will be a great advantage to combine the geometrical features of the two. Herein, we report a series of novel two-dimensional carbon allotropes that possess fullerene-like hollow structures (bubbles) embedded in a graphene sheet. These carbon allotropes are both thermally and dynamically stable. Calculations using hybrid functionals show that these two-dimensional carbon allotropes could be metals or semiconductors depending on the size and the pattern of the bubbles. The band gap can be as large as 1.66 eV. Due to the unique atomic configuration, some bubble-wrap carbons have unusual negative Poisson's ratios. The combination of graphene and fullerenes provides an appealing approach to design carbon-based materials with dexterous properties. For example, the insertion of the metal atoms inside the bubbles may greatly enhance the functions of such materials in photovoltaics and catalysis.
