Abstract:Porous ternary metal sulfide integrated electrode materials with abundant electroactive sites and redox reactions are very promising for supercapacitors. Herein, a porous zinc cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Zn-Co-S/NF) was constructed by facile growth of 2D bimetallic zinc/cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Zn/Co-MOF) nanosheets with leaf-like morphology on NF, followed by additional sulfurization. The Zn-Co-S/NF nanosheet array acted directly as a supercapacitor electrode showing much better electrochemical performance (2354.3 Fg(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles) when compared with zinc cobalt sulfide powder (355.3 Fg(-1) and 75.8% retention over 1000 cycles), which originates from good electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, abundant electroactive sites, and facilitated transportation of electrons and electrolyte ions due to the unique nanosheet array structure. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device assembled from Zn-Co-S/NF and activated carbon electrodes can deliver a highest energy density of 31.9 Whkg(-1) and a maximum power density of 8.5 kWkg(-1). Most importantly, this ASC also shows good cycling stability (71.0% retention over 10000 cycles). Furthermore, a red LED can be powered by two connected ASCs, and thus as-synthesized Zn-Co-S/NF has great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Porous nanosheet-structured electrode materials are very attractive for the high efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, a porous cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Co9S8-NSA/NF) is successfully fabricated by a facile method, which involves the uniform growth of 2D Co-based leaf-like zeolitic imidazole frameworks (Co-ZIF-L) on Ni foam followed by subsequent sulfurization with thioacetamide (TAA). Benefiting from the unique porous nanosheet array architecture and conductive substrate, the Co9S8-NSA/NF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high capacitance (1098.8 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), good rate capacity (54.6% retention at 10 A g(-1)) and long-term stability (87.4% retention over 1000 cycles), when acted as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device using the as-fabricated Co9S8-NSA as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 20.0 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 828.5 W kg(-1). The method developed here can be extended to the construction of other structured metal (mono or mixed) sulfide electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.

Abstract:Integrated hybrid nanoarrays with hierarchical porous structures have attracted much attention as energy materials for their excellent synergistic effects. Herein, we provide a facile strategy for integrating a NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 hybrid nanoneedle array on nickel foam derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors and a Ni/Co-precursor by sulfurization. When directly used as the free-standing electrode for a supercapacitor, the NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1536.8 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). Furthermore, the assembled NiCo2S4@Ni3S2//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) exhibited a high energy density of 35.26 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 724.93 W kg(-1). The capacitance retention of NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 was up to 97.4% after 10000 cycles.

Abstract:One of the key challenges for pseudocapacitive electrode materials with highly effective capacitance output and future practical applications is how to rationally construct hierarchical and ordered hybrid nanoarchitecture through the simple process. Herein, we design and synthesize a novel NiMn-layered double hydroxide nanosheet@Ni 3 S 2 nanorod hybrid array supported on porous nickel foam via a one-pot hydrothermal method. Benefited from the ultrathin and rough nature, the well-defined porous structure of the hybrid array, as well as the synergetic effect between NiMn-layered double hydroxide nanosheets and Ni 3 S 2 nanorods, the as-fabricated hybrid array-based electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 2703 F g −1 at 3 A g −1 . Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor with this hybrid array as a positive electrode and wood-derived activated carbon as a negative electrode demonstrates high energy density (57 Wh Kg −1 at 738 W Kg −1 ) and very good electrochemical cycling stability.

Abstract:In this work, we synthesized: the hierarchical ZnO@C@NiO core shell nanorods arrays (CSNAs). grown on a carbon cloth (CC) conductive substrate by a three-step Method involving, hydrothermal and chemical bath methods. The morphology and chemical structure of the hybrid nanoarrays were characterized in detail. The combination and formation mechanism was proposed. The conducting carbon layer between. ZnO and NiO layers can efficiently enhance the electric conductivity of the integrated electrodes, and also protea the corrosion of ZnO in an alkaline solution. Compared with ZnO@NiO nanorods arrays (NAs), the NiO in CC/ZnO@C@NiO electrodes, which possess a unique multilevel core-shell nanostructure exhibits a higher specific capacity (677 C/g at 1.43 A/g) and an enhanced cycling stability (capacity remain 71% after 5000 cycles), on account of the protection of carbon layer derived from glucose. Additionally, a flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor is readily constructed by coating the PVA/KOH gel electrolyte between the ZnO@C@NiO CSNAs and commercial graphene. The energy density of this all-solid-state device decreases from 35.7 to 16.0 Wh/kg as the power density increases from 380.9 to 2704.2 W/kg with an excellent cycling stability (87.5% of the initial capacitance after 10000 cycles). Thereby; the CC/ZnO@C@NiO CSNAs of three-dimensional hierarchical structure is promising electrode materials for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors.
Hierarchical CuO@ZnCo–OH core-shell heterostructure on copper foam as three-dimensional binder-free electrodes for high performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:Rational architecture design and ingenious electrochemical performance optimization are highly desirable in developing high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors. Herein, a facile electrodeposition strategy is adopted to construct the hierarchical core-shell architecture of binary transitional metal hydroxide nanosheets anchored on copper foam ( CF) supported three-dimensional (3D) CuO scaffolds. The synergistic contributions from different electro-active components are maximized by the heterostructures construction and components optimization. As a result, the 3D binder-free electrode of CF supported 1Co2-OH core-shell heterostructure achieve a high areal capacitance of 2.634 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2, enhanced rate performance (71.6% retention at 30 mA cm−2), and long durability (99.1% after 4000 cycles). Additionally, a 1Co2–OH//LSDC (loofah sponge derived carbon) asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is assembled with an operating voltage of 1.5 V. The ASC device delivers a maximum energy density of 0.21 mW h cm−2 (22.10 W h kg−1) at a power density of 4.08 mW cm−2 (434 W kg−1), and exceptional cycling stability (91.7% of capacitance retention after 4000 cycles). Of practical importance, this work broadens our horizons in fabricating novel hierarchical core-shell heterostructures for next-generation electrochemical energy-storage technologies.

Abstract:The high-energy density of supercapacitors is urgently needed. In this work, we develop a high energy density hierarchical ZnCo2S4/ZnCo2O4 electrode material with flower-like structure directly anchored on nickel foam by hydrothermal and ion exchange method. The as-prepared hierarchical arrays take advantage of ZnCo2S4 with high electroactive surface area, flower-like morphology with rapid channels for ion diffusion and electron transport. ZnCo2O4 possesses good stability and cooperativity with ZnCo2S4. Remarkably, the ZnCo2S4/ZnCo2O4 delivers a specific capacitance of 1057.78 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 in a three-electrode system. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled with ZnCo2S4/ZnCo2O4 as positive electrode and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as negative electrode, delivers a high energy density of 127.4 W h kg−1 at a power density of 2520 W kg−1 and a long cycle life (89% of capacity retention after 5000 cycles). The assembled ASC can work as a power source, which can drive the fan after being charged.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructures have attracted intensive attention due to their ability to boost electrochemical performance. However, it remains challenging to construct such intriguing structures. In the present work, a MnCo-LDH/NiCo-LDH array with hierarchical heterostructures is designed based on 1D nanoneedles, 2D nanosheets, and 3D hollow nanocages on nickel foam. It is synthesized by combined trimetallic co-doping, in-situ co-precipitation, and hydrothermal techniques. Benefiting from the delicately structure, the MnCo-LDH/NiCo-LDH array exhibits a specific capacitance of 1778.2 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor composed of positive MnCo-LDH/NiCo-LDH electrode and a negative activated carbon electrode offers an energy density of 36.9 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 750.0 W kg −1 . The ASC device features outstanding cycling stability (e.g., 91.4 % of initial capacitance even after 8000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 7 A g −1 ). Therefore, the hierarchical nanostructure provides an effective strategy to construct high-performance electrodes. The assembled flexible ASCs are demonstrated to power electronic devices effectively.

Abstract:Reasonable design of electrodes with well-defined nanostructure is the central aspect in the practical application of high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, hollow tube@sheets NiCo2S4 core-shell nanoarrays are rationally constructed to the free-standing electrode by in situ growing ZIF-67 on Co-precursor nanorods array and sequentially performing anion-exchange (S2-) and cation-exchange (Ni2+). The well-defined nanostructures can shorten the ion transport path in the charging-discharging process, increase the specific surface area and electrochemical active cites, which help in improving electrochemical performance. Therefore, the unique tube@sheets NiCo2S4 core-shell nanoarrays exhibit intriguing electrochemical performance and show excellent areal capacitance of 11.3 F cm-2 (3227.94 F g-1) at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 (2 A g-1). The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers a high energy density of 0.42 mW h cm-2 at a power density of 2.1 mW cm-2 and displays outstanding cyclic stability (90.2% retention after 5000 cycles). Consequently, the well-defined nanostructure engineering strategy is beneficial for designing active electrode materials for efficient energy storage devices.

Abstract:Hierarchical tubular heterostructures of Cu-Co-O/CuO are prepared.A self-engaged oxidizable nanowires is adopted to construct advanced nanostructures.Cu-Co-O/CuO serves for pseudocapacitors with high performance.The pseudocapacitive electrode shows high capacitance and superb cycling stability.Hierarchical hollow structures of materials used for electrodes of supercapacitors is effective for the large specific surface area and fast ions and charge transports. Cu nanowires, served as self-engaged templates, provide sites and paths for the nucleation and growth of the ZIF-67. Meanwhile, Cu atoms could disperse into MOFs to form Cu-Co mixed oxides and construct heterostructures. In this way, Cu nanowires are not only used as a template, but also as an activated part to improve internal electronic structures. All these features are helpful for improving electrochemical performances. Herein, Cu nanowires and MOFs are firstly combined, via a mild and efficient approach, to fabricate Cu-Co-O/CuO electrode materials. This electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performances with a specific capacitance 834.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) show an ultra-high energy density of 40.7 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 915 W kg-1. The ASC shows good capacitance retention after 8000 cycles in a 2 M KOH aqueous solution. Abstract:Rational design of the electrode materials in distinctive architecture and tailored composition is critical for regulating their electrochemical properties. Herein, the novel porous zinc-cobalt sulfides (ZCS) bead-curtain-like arrays (BCA) supported by three-dimensional Ni foam (NF) (denoted as ZCS/NF BCA) are fabricated as advanced electrode for supercapacitors (SCs), which exhibit remarkable electrochemical performances in respect of superb capacity of ~837 C g−1 (specific capacitance of ~1860 F g−1) at 1 A g−1 and ultra-long cycling stability (~92.9% retention after 5000 cycles at 6 A g−1). Furthermore, the assembled hybrid supercapacitors based on ZCS/NF BCA delivers ultrahigh energy density of ~88 Wh kg−1 with a maximum power density of ~800 W kg−1. The excellent properties may be ascribed to the combined contributions from the hierarchical bead-curtain architecture of ZCS/NF BCA composite and the bimetallic sulfide with abundant valence states for rich redox reactions.

Abstract:Here, we prepare three-dimensional nanoflower-shaped CuCo2O4@CuCo2S4@Co(OH)2 core–shell materials on nickel foam (NF). CuCo2O4 (CuC) nanowire arrays and CuCo2S4 (CuS) nanosheets are grown directly on NF as the core through routine hydrothermal and high-temperature calcination methods and Co(OH)2 (CH) small nanosheets deposited on CuC@CuS nanoflowers via the potentiostatic deposition for 15 mins. Due to its distinctive structure and the synergistic effect between multiple components of CuCo2O4@CuCo2S4@Co(OH)2, the electrode has a fantastic specific capacitance (Cs, 4075F/g) under the current density of 1 A/g and satisfying cyclic stability (88.4 % capacitance retention and 84.6 % coulomb efficiency after 10,000 cycles). Additionally, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device equipped with CuC@CuS@CH-15/NF as a positive and active carbon (AC) electrode as a negative electrode can work steadily at 0–1.6 V. The ASC device can offer an excellent energy density (E, Wh kg−1) of 232.02 Wh kg−1 at a high-power density of 2879.8 W kg−1 (P, W kg−1) and an unexpected cycle stability (84.2 % of the original Cs and 81.7 % of coulombic efficiency after 10,000 repeated GCD tests), which far surpasses other ASCs of the same type. These results guide to enhancement of the electrochemical properties of cobalt-based oxides/sulfides@Co(OH)2 as the positive electrode for supercapacitors.

Abstract:This work reports hierarchical "tube-on-fiber" nanostructures, composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on carbon nanofibers (CNFs), impregnated with mixed-metal selenide nanoparticles (Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs), as high performance supercapacitors. Co-Zn hybrid zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (Co-Zn ZIF-67) was electrospun with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form nanofibers that were sequentially thermally treated and subjected to selenylation. The "tube-on-fiber" structure is designed to confine the Co-Zn mixed-metal selenide nanoparticles and prevents their agglomeration. Extruded CNTs rooting in carbon nanofibers further improve the electronic conductivity. The mixed-metal selenide allows more accommodation space and faradic reactions compared to single metal selenide. Based on these merits, the hierarchical Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs exhibit a high specific capacity of 1040.1 C g-1 (1891 F g-1) at 1 A g-1 with impressive rate performance in supercapacitors. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor with Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs as the cathode and porous carbon nanofibers as the anode (denoted as Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs//PCNFs) is fabricated. It delivers a superior energy and power density of 61.4 W h kg-1 and 754.4 W kg-1, respectively, and meanwhile retains 31.7 W h kg-1 of the energy density with 15 421.6 W kg-1 of the working power. In addition, the assembled supercapacitor device displays an excellent capacity retention of 88.6% after 8000 cycles at 5 A g-1.

Abstract:Tailoring the electronic structure of nanomaterials by constructing core-shell heterostruture is a compelling strategy to design novel electrode materials with modified physiochemical properties for supercapacitors with improved performance. Herein, for the first time, we in situ fabricate iron nickel selenide (FeNiSe2)@nickel cobalt sulfide (Ni4.5Co4.5S8) core-shell nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition approach and a selenization treatment. This three-dimensional hierarchcial porous framework formed by plentiful interconnected nanosheets can expose numerous redox active sites with varied oxidation states and provide a conductive and porous skeleton for rapid ion/electrolyte ions transport. Benefiting from its modulated electronic structure and synergetic effect of metal-like FeNiSe2 and Ni4.5Co4.5S8, the as-synthesized FeNiSe2@Ni4.5Co4.5S8 electrode displays a large specific capacity of 236.9 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1, remarkable rate capability with 80.6% capacity retention at 20 A g-1, and stable cyclic performance, which are superior to those of pure FeNiSe2 and Ni4.5Co4.5S8 electrodes. Besides, the assembled FeNiSe2@Ni4.5Co4.5S8//porous carbon hybrid supercapacitor device offers an energy density of 69.0 Wh kg-1 at 799.2 W kg-1, and exceptional cycling stability with 91.2% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. This work offers a synthetic strategy to explore core-shell electrode materials with tunable architecture and morphology for high-performance energy storage devices.

Rational Engineering of Hierarchical Mesoporous CuxFeySe Battery-Type Electrodes for Asymmetric Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:Highly-ranked positive electrode materials with distinct electrochemical properties and appropriate designs of heterostructured porous architectures integrating mixed transition metal selenides are necessary to boost energy storage capability, which thus have been intensively investigated in the recent years. In this work, we develop a one-step chemical deposition method to grow 3D copper iron selenides (CuxFeySe) heterostructures on the surface of a nickel foam (NF) current collector. The macroporous skeleton of NF not only boosts the homogeneous growth of CuxFeySe architectures but also improves the electrical conductivity of resultant electrodes due to the robust mechanical strength at the junction. The effect of Cu2+/Fe2+ ions is also investigated and noticeably contributed to electrochemical performance. Benefitting from the synergetic effect of integrated Cu and Fe ions with different chemical states, improved electronic configuration, and effective electron/ion transport rate, the battery-type Cu7.5Fe7.5Se electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 186.1 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) with an enhanced capacity retention (63.7% at 50 A g(-1)). Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device fabricated with the self-standing Cu7.5Fe7.5Se electrode and benchmark activated carbon (AC) as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively realizes a large cell potential of 1.5 V and exhibits a high specific capacity of 70 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and a good rate capability (61.6% at 25 A g(-1)). The assembled device reaches a maximum energy density of similar to 74.2 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 1058.3 W kg(-1) together with an appropriate lifespan (91.3% after 8000 cycles at 12 A g(-1)).

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are considered as attractive materials in the areas of energy storage because of their unique redox properties, excellent electronic conductivity, as well as environmental friendliness. However, poor cyclic stability and limited electrochemical active sites hinder their further application. To address this issue, a flower-like hierarchical CuCo2S4 structure is constructed by a two-step hydrothermal method. In this nanostructure, CuCo2S4 grows outward to form a tightly bound hierarchical structure on the nickel foams (NFs). This oriented structure can provide more laminar gaps for electrolyte ion diffusion, exposing more reaction sites to increase the ion transport efficiency between the layers, reducing the ion transport resistance and improving the reaction kinetics. Thus, the CuCo2S4 electrode exhibits excellent energy storage performance, exhibiting a high specific capacity of 1415.6 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. After 10,000 cycles of 10 A g−1, it still has 91.9% of the initial performance. In addition, an asymmetrical supercapacitor (ASC) was constructed by choosing CuCo2S4 as the anode and RGO as the cathode, which has the maximum energy density (61.8 Wh Kg−1) at 812.1 W Kg−1 and significant cycling endurance (92.05% retention) at 10,000 turns. Briefly, the researchers successfully constructed an array of CuCo2S4 flower-like hierarchical nanostructures and confirmed their potential application in supercapacitors.

Abstract:The conductivity of NiCo2O4 is at least 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of NiO or Co3O4, which makes it exhibit better electrochemical performance when it is used for supercapacitor applications. Morphology engineering is a crucial way to provide easy access for the electrolyte ions to the surface of the electrode to generate more surface redox reactions. Here, we use a sacrificial template method to prepare hollow NiCo2O4 nanoboxes and investigate their potential application for supercapacitors. SEM and TEM reveal that the unique hierarchical hollow NiCo2O4 nanoboxes were constructed by nanosheets with a large specific surface area and favorable pore structure, which provide fast electron and ion transport between the electrode and electrolyte and bring about abundant electrochemically active sites for redox reactions. Three-electrode electrochemical measurements show that it can deliver a high specific capacitance of 930 F g−1 and excellent cycling stability with 88 % retention after 2000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was constructed using hollow NiCo2O4 nanoboxes as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The device displays a maximum energy density of 51.7 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 800 W kg−1, and excellent performance stability with a capacity retention of 85.9 % after 10,000 cycles. These results demonstrate that the as-prepared hollow NiCo2O4 nanoboxes hold great potential as electrode materials for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:High electrical conductivity and rational design of structures are two crucial routes to improving the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. However, highly conductive electrode materials with short ion-transport paths remain a challenge in energy storage. Here, we propose manganese cobalt sulfide (MnCo2S4) nanowire wrapping by a flocculent shell layer using a facile hydrothermal method with post-sulfurization treatment. The resultant MnCo2S4 electrode employed for supercapacitor delivered a remarkable specific capacitance of 2067 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device was successfully assembled using MnCo2S4 and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as electrodes, achieving a high energy density of 31.3 W kg−1 at a power density of 800 W kg−1. With such outstanding electrochemical performance, this asymmetric supercapacitor device holds great potential in developing high-energy-storage applications.
