Abstract:Aberration theory is a fundamental understanding of the optical aberrations and remains the best way to guide optical system design. The nodal aberration theory, which can be used to describe the aberration fields of freeform imaging systems, is limited by the small field of view (FOV) of the imaging system. In this paper, we propose a method to predict the induced aberration of Fringe Zernike terms with field-dependent footprints. The footprint of each field point is calculated in its corresponding local tangent plane of the optical surface; therefore, a more accurate prediction of the induced aberrations of Fringe Zernike terms can be achieved. Both the FOV and highly tilted architecture of freeform imaging systems are considered when calculating the footprints. Two examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which we believe can provide good guidance for the design of freeform imaging systems with a relatively large FOV.

Abstract:Mid-spatial frequency surface errors (MSFSE) can cause small angle scattering in optical systems. In order to determine a reasonable tolerance for MSFSE in optical design and processing, this paper conducts a quantitative study on the impact of MSFSE on the modulation transfer function (MTF) of optical systems. Under diffraction-limited conditions, we derived an expression for the influence of MSFSE on the MTF of optical systems and analyzed it. Then, we verified the theoretical derivation results through optical design software simulation. Assuming that the optical system has a sinusoidal MSFSE on the pupil, we performed the Fourier transform on the pupil function and squared it to obtain the point spread function (PSF), and then performed the Fourier transform on the PSF to obtain the optical transfer function (OTF) of the optical system. By taking the OTF mode, the expression of MTF under the influence of MSFSE can be obtained. By comparing this expression of MTF with the MTF of an optical system without MSFSE under diffraction-limited conditions, the quantitative impact of MSFSE on the MTF of the optical system can be obtained. Theoretical calculation results indicate that sinusoidal MSFSE can lead to different losses of MTF at different spatial frequencies and that the changes in MTF losses are periodic. The maximum loss ratios of MTF in optical systems caused by sinusoidal MSFSE with peak-to-valley (PV) of 0.030 mu m, 0.095 mu m, 0.159 mu m and 0.223 mu m are 0.89 %, 8.80 %, 23.48 % and 43.31 %, respectively. The loss of MTF will increase nonlinearly with the increase of PV of MSFSE. The theoretical calculation results are consistent with the software simulation results.
Calibration for the Errors Resulted from Aberration in Long Focal Length Measurement

Abstract:In this paper, a high-accuracy calibration method for errors resulted from aberration in long focal length measurement, is presented. Generally, Gaussian Equation is used for calculation without consideration of the errors caused by aberration. However, the errors are the key factor affecting the accuracy in the measurement system of a large aperture and long focal length lens. We creatively introduce an effective way to calibrate the errors, with detailed analysis of the long focal length measurement based on divergent light and Talbot interferometry. Aberration errors are simulated by Zemax. Then, we achieve auto-correction with the help of Visual C++ software and the experimental results reveal that the relative accuracy is better than 0.01%. By comparing modified values with experimental results obtained in knife-edge testing measurement, the proposed method is proved to be highly effective and reliable.
Spectral Characterization of Optical Aberrations in Fluidic Lenses

Abstract:We report an extensive numerical study and supporting experimental results on the spectral characterization of optical aberrations in macroscopic fluidic lenses with tunable focal distance and aperture shape. Using a Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor we experimentally reconstruct the near-field wave-front transmitted by the fluidic lenses, and we characterize the chromatic aberrations in terms of Zernike polynomials in the visible range. Moreover, we further classify the spectral response of the lenses using clustering techniques, in addition to correlation and convolution measurements. Experimental results are in agreement with our theoretical model of the non-linear deformation of thin elastic membranes.

Abstract:The leading order monochromatic aberrations are investigated for the optical systems, which obey single-plane symmetry and translational invariance. These aberrations are classified from the symmetry principles for the wave aberration function. The Fermat's Principle is applied for a system made of generic cylindrical surfaces and a complete set of the aberration coefficients required for calculation of the aberrations for any paraxial ray is obtained. To demonstrate the applied value of the analytical results obtained the criteria of compensation of the leading aberrations for cylindrical analog of the Cassegrain telescope were found.

Abstract:As the large-scale SiC materials, CCOS and MRF processing technology is gradually developing, optical manufacturing quickly entered the "era of giant mirror". As every basis of all optical processing, surface testing technology is facing enormous challenges with high efficiency and high precision and high accuracy. As an essential method in large aperture optical testing, we proposed a worthy attempt to estimate the actual surface error map RMS from individual measurement results. In order to overcome some actual working condition limits, it is a supplement to the state-of-the-art large sample averaging methods. This part of work is based on the orthogonality hypothesis, and proposed the real surface error estimation methods using interact scalar product. The experiment of a ∅3m aspherical mirror measurement and analysis indicates that the actual surface error RMS is 0.020~0.023λ, with estimation accuracy ±λ/700.

Abstract:Zernike polynomials have been widely used to fit lens surface figure error and the wavefront aberration of optical systems, for its orthogonality in the unit circle and its corresponding relationships with optical aberrations 1. Because the current extensively used Zernike polynomials are just functions of the aperture, without consideration of the field factor, it can only represent single field wavefront aberration. This is incomplete for the description of the wavefront aberration, especially for lithographic lens with a large field and high imaging quality 2. Thus, considering the field factor in the description of wavefront aberration becomes very necessary. This paper presents a convenient and practical method to describe the full field wavefront aberration. A rotationally symmetric optical system has been taken as an example, in the scope of normalized full field, taking the Chebyshev zero points as nodes, and applying the Chebyshev polynomials to the fitting of Zernike coefficients of different fields. Meanwhile, the influence of the degree of Chebyshev polynomials and the number of fitting nodes on the fitting accuracy is taken into account. The results show that the fitting method used in this paper is of high accuracy, and this fitting method is very significant for the analysis of full field wavefront aberration.
Real-time MTF Measurement System for Projection Lens

Abstract:There is no standard method for the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measurement of projection lens,so we analyze a real-time MTF measurement system based on image analysis for projection lens in this paper. Using CCD as an image receiver and based on image analysis,a method of MTF measurement is discussed. According to analyzing a single pixel image,the method can acquire tangential and sagittal MTF data at one measurement. The structure and theoretical model of the test system are expounded. The importance of system parameter calibration and how to calibrate correctly are emphatically analyzed. The factors that influence the results and how to correct the noise effect are also analyzed. Compared measurement results of a qualified projection lens and an unqualified projection lens with the designed datum,the comparison experiment show the validity of the system and the method.

Abstract:Traditional imaging methods often separate the two technical procedures of optical system design and imaging processing, where the lens subsystem is firstly optimized using an optical measure of performance and the image processing subsystem is optimized subsequently, resulting in the failures in efficient cooperation between the optical and digital elements and missing of the optimal solution. Therefore, an innovative approach is presented to combine optical system design and image processing together to obtain high resolution images from the final system. In this paper, the theoretical foundations for this computing optical design method is analyzed by considering the modulation transfer functions (MTF) and aberrations. According to the wave aberration theory and Zernicke formula, the relationship between the point spread function (PSF) and a certain monochromatic aberration can be obtained. Fourier transformation is taken on these PSFs and then modulus value calculation is adopted to get the MTFs. By analyzing the MTFs of idealized optical systems, the influence of each monochromatic aberration on the image can be concluded. Note that some of the MTFs values have zeros and others do not. Considering that imaging processing algorithm cannot recover the information lost at such zeros, thus some aberrations can be easily corrected through imaging processing algorithm, while others not. Aimed at a single monochromatic aberrations respectively, the optical system with single lens is designed in ZEMAX software and the relevant imaging processing algorithm is adopted. From the comparison among the final images, the theoretical foundations for the computing optical design method considering the MTF and aberrations can be verified. The compensation for aberration of imaging processing can be utilized to reduce the pressure of optical system design. The computing optical design method provides a new approach to simplify structure and reduce cost, as well as to gain high resolution images simultaneously, especially for designing certain complex optical system, which shows promising perspective of industrial application.

Abstract:The shape of the aspheric lens changes caused by machining errors, resulting in a change in the optical transfer function, which affects the image quality. At present, there is no universally recognized tolerance criterion standard for aspheric surface. To study the influence of aspheric tolerances on the optical transfer function, the tolerances of polynomial fitting are allocated on the aspheric surface, and the imaging simulation is carried out by optical imaging software. Analysis is based on a set of aspheric imaging system. The error is generated in the range of a certain PV value, and expressed as a form of Zernike polynomial, which is added to the aspheric surface as a tolerance term. Through optical software analysis, the MTF of optical system can be obtained and used as the main evaluation index. Evaluate whether the effect of the added error on the MTF of the system meets the requirements of the current PV value. Change the PV value and repeat the operation until the acceptable maximum allowable PV value is obtained. According to the actual processing technology, consider the error of various shapes, such as M type, W type, random type error. The new method will provide a certain development for the actual free surface processing technology the reference value.

Abstract:Objective Optical systems with low tolerance sensitivity have good machinability and high manufacturing yield,reducing processing and adjustment costs.To achieve this,it is necessary to evaluate and optimize the system's tolerance sensitivity in its design,so it is necessary to study related desensitization methods.Traditional desensitization methods include using global optimization algorithms,establishing multiple structures or a combination of both to conduct extensive searches in the solution space,which requires a large amount of computational resources and has low optimization efficiency.Besides,the method by controlling the system structure and ray tracing parameters(such as surface curvature,ray deflection angle,etc.)or optimizing specific aberration distributions to obtain tolerance-insensitive structures lacks the analysis of introduced aberrations,and there is still a certain blindness in the setting of evaluation functions,which also affects the optimization efficiency.Therefore,in order to achieve higher optimization efficiency,this paper proposes a tolerance desensitization method based on the analysis and control of introduced aberrations,and provides corresponding operation counts. Methods Zernike polynomials are used to quantify aberrations.Based on this,linear algebra theory and Monte Carlo analysis are used to find the aberration change rule of the system after introducing perturbations.The main introduced aberrations are then determined through the aberration field and eigenvalue distribution after dimension reduction(Fig.7,Fig.11).Asymmetric perturbations and axial perturbations that may occur during the system manufacturing process are modeled.The introduced aberrations caused by the perturbations are described based on the node aberration theory,and the key surfaces are determined through statistical analysis(Fig.8,Fig.12).According to the correspondence between Zernike terms and wave aberrations,the aberration space is transformed,and a corresponding evaluation function is proposed.Based on the previous analysis,the weights and application surfaces of each term of the evaluation function are determined,and then it is included in the optimization process to suppress the generation of new aberrations.The analysis and optimization ideas of this method are shown(Fig.3). Results and Discussions This method has been applied to the design of the F#11 optical system(Structure 1)and the NA0.5 optical system(Structure 2).After optimization,the expected machining performance has been significantly improved.Taking the MTF performance at the specified spatial frequency on the axis with a 98%confidence level as an example,the performance of the two systems after optimization has increased by about 68%(Fig.9)and 20%(Fig.13)respectively.Compared with the optimization using the TOLR operation number in Zemax software,the optimization time of Structure 1 has been reduced from 7 hours to 36 minutes,and tolerance desensitization has been successfully achieved in the optimization of Structure 2. Conclusions A method for reducing tolerance sensitivity based on the analysis and suppression of introduced aberrations is proposed.The obtained Zernike coefficient matrix is processed by the method of principal component analysis,and the dimensionality reduction of the aberration space is realized according to the obtained eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors.After analyzing the dimensionally reduced aberration space,the main introduced aberration items after perturbation are clarified.The types of aberrations caused by asymmetric perturbations and axial perturbations in the optical system are analyzed,and the quantitative expression of the introduced aberration items is obtained based on the node aberration theory.According to the correspondence between Zernike terms and primary aberrations,the expression of the evaluation function M is derived.The evaluation function is applied to two design examples,and the optimization results show that this method has higher optimization efficiency compared to existing methods,and it has a tolerance desensitization effect on optical systems with different complexities and different introduced aberration characteristics.

Analytical Aberration Theory for Plane-symmetric Optical Systems and its Application in the Analysis of Distortion in Freeform Spectrometers

Abstract:The recent history of optical design saw a progressive trend of also designing without rotational symmetry, especially spectrometers due to the use of reflective and diffractive elements in their designs. A freeform hyperspectral imager design in CubeSat format is presented in this work, which has large deviation from rotational symmetry. Based on a generalization of paraxial optics and wavefront aberration expansion applicable to plane-symmetric systems, in this dissertation we derived the aberration coefficients of aberration types in the third group for plane-symmetric systems that include the second order effects of the light beam footprint on optical surfaces. We also expanded the theory to include the contributions from freeform surfaces and induced aberrations. For the application to plane-symmetric spectrometers, the aberration coefficients related to distortion are of special interest. Comparisons between the distortion results predicted by the aberration coefficients and simulated from real raytracing show good consistency in example systems of a Dyson spectrometer and freeform spectrometers that share the three-mirror double-pass structure, which is similar to the spectrometer component of the hyperspectral imager we designed. In comparison to real raytracing, results of the theory applied to the spectrometer of the hyperspectral imager we designed show the limits of the theory that is limited to the third group of aberrations, while in this design, high-order groups also significantly contribute. In all cases, the analytical formulae of the aberration coefficients contain the information on surface contributions, induced aberrations, and the relation between the aberration behavior and system parameters, which provide valuable insights in the analysis of plane-symmetric systems.

Abstract:Interference-fit joints are typically adopted to produce permanent assemblies among mechanical parts. The resulting contact pressure is generally used for element fixing or to allow load transmission. Nevertheless, some special designs take advantage of the contact pressure to induce desiderata deformation or to mitigate the stress field inside the structure. Biased interference fitting between a planar mirror and an external ring could be used to induce the required curvature to realize new adaptive lens for optical aberration correction. Recently, thermally-actuated deformable mirror on this principle based, was proposed and prototyped. Although the feasibility and utility of such innovative lens was demonstrated, no comprehensive theory was developed to describe mirror behavior and predict their curvature. Nowadays, the use of approximated numerical approach, such as the finite element method, is the only way to study the interaction between biased and interference fitted bodies. The paper aims to give the theoretical background for the correct design of adaptive lens actuated by interference fitting. A new formulation for the curvature prediction is proposed and compared with finite element analysis and available experimental measurements.

Abstract:When aberrations are small, it is possible to use wave aberration variance to obtain the position of the best image plane in both conventional and holographic optical systems. However, when aberrations increase, this measurement is not sufficient and it does not provide the correct plane position for the best image. In this paper, two alternative methods for evaluating image quality in spherically aberrated on-axis holographic lenses are compared. These two methods are the standard deviation of the distribution of light intensity and entropy. Both methods are based on the calculation of the diffraction integral and the subsequent analysis of the distribution of light intensity as a probability density function for each image plane being analysed. Even though the results obtained with both methods are identical when aberrations are small, only entropy provides the best image when the value of these aberrations increases.

Design Method for Freeform Off-Axis Three-Mirror Anastigmat Optical Systems with a Large Field of View and Low Error Sensitivity

Abstract:A freeform off-axis three-mirror anastigmat (TMA) optical system with a large field of view (FOV) can obtain target image information with a larger spatial range and more spatial details, which is a development trend within the realm of space optics. The optical aberration increases exponentially with the FOV, resulting in a significant increase in error sensitivity for large-FOV optical systems. To address this issue, a method for designing optical systems with a large FOV and low error sensitivity is proposed. The FOV is gradually expanded from a small initial value in equal-length increments until it reaches the full FOV. At each step, the error sensitivity is recalculated and controlled to a lesser extent than in the previous step. In this design process, the freeform surface is used to correct the aberration and obtain low error sensitivity. An optical system with a focal length of 1000 mm and an F-number of 10 is used as an example, and the FOV is enlarged from 5° × 1°to 20° × 4°. The design results show that the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the optical system can reach 0.45@50 lp/mm, and the average wavefront aberration is 0.029λ. After four rounds of FOV expansion and error sensitivity optimization, the error sensitivity is reduced by 37.27% compared to the initial system, which verifies the correctness and practicality of the method.

We describe a mirror as an inclined phase-transforming plane, where the phase transformation across the plane is determined by the depth of the mirror as a function of position. The scattering matrix is calculated in the usual way by evaluating the overlap integrals over some surface for which the amplitudes and phases of the incoming and outgoing fields are known; because, however, the modes are not orthogonal over the surface of interest, a system of linear equations has to be solved. We demonstrate the “thin-mirror” technique by studying the behaviour of paraboloidal and ellipsoidal mirros, and we show how the performance of measured and approximate surfaces can be assessed.

Abstract:The Zernike representation of wavefronts interlinks low- and high-order aberrations, which may result in imprecise clinical estimates. Recently, the Gatinel–Malet wavefront representation has been introduced to resolve this problem by deriving a new, unlinked basis originating from Zernike polynomials. This new basis preserves the classical low and high aberration subgroups' structure, as well as the orthogonality within each subgroup, but not the orthogonality between low and high aberrations. This feature has led to conversions relying on separate wavefront reconstructions for each subgroup, which may increase the associated numerical errors. This study proposes a robust, minimised-error (lossless) analytical approach for conversion between the Zernike and Gatinel–Malet spaces. This method analytically reformulates the conversion as a nonhomogeneous system of linear equations and computationally solves it using matrix factorisation and decomposition techniques with high-level accuracy. This work fundamentally demonstrates the lossless expression of complex wavefronts in a format that is more clinically interpretable, with potential applications in various areas of ophthalmology, such as refractive surgery.
