Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions in chiral magnets with the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction have received intensive attention because of their potential in prospective applications. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that another novel spin texture in chiral magnets—the chiral strip-domain wall (SDW)—can generate a deep one-dimensional potential well of magnetic origin. We show by micromagnetic simulations that the potential well caused by a SDW can serve as an internal channel to guide spin-wave (SW) propagation, which makes the ultrathin chiral magnet including the SDW become a reconfigurable self-cladding optic-fiber-like magnonic waveguide with a graded refractive index. Furthermore, we design logical NOT and NAND gates based on the state-modulated transmission property of the magnonic waveguide. We also reveal that a SDW can be reliably written into the gate arms using the Slonczewski spin torque. Finally, prospective applications of the observed potential well in other fields are envisioned. This work is expected to open new possibilities for SW guiding and manipulation in ultrathin magnetic nanostructures as well as to help shape the field of beam magnonics. Chiral magnets can guide spin waves and hence act as the magnonic equivalent of optical fibres, researchers in China theoretically show. Circuits that use spin currents rather than conventional electrical currents are anticipated to have considerably higher throughputs and be suitable for tasks such as image processing and speech recognition. Now, Xiangjun Xing at Wenzhou University and Yan Zhou at Nanjing University have performed simulations that show that deep one-dimensional potential wells can be created in chiral magnets. Such wells can guide spin waves, acting as magnonic waveguides that resemble optic fibres with a graded refractive index. The pair also designed simple logic gates based on these waveguides. They claim that this will open up new avenues for guiding spin waves in ultrathin magnetic structures. To realize practical application, the attenuation of spin waves because of boundary scattering and multimode dispersion in magnonic waveguides must be greatly reduced. Up to now, there have been not good solutions to this problem. Here, we propose and demonstrate by micromagnetic simulations to use the longitudinal chiral domain wall imprinted into a waveguide with the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) to introduce a deep potential well and guide spin waves forming an ultra narrow internal spin-wave channel (~10 nm). Spin waves along this channel can prevent scattering arising from boundary roughness and multimode coexistence and thus should exhibit reduced attenuation and enhanced coherence, which is highly desired in building real spin-wave devices. Moreover, we show that the spin-wave transmission in this waveguide with the DMI can be switched on and off at the frequencies lower than a threshold frequency f2 by changing the static domain state. This property is explored to construct logical NAND gate by connecting two logical NOT gates in parallel.
