Abstract:Ridesharing, a shared service that uses the information and knowledge matching, can efficiently utilize scattered social resources to reduce the demand for vehicles in urban road networks. However, car ridesharing has the problems of low capacity and high cost, and it cannot satisfy demands for recurring, long-distance, and low-cost trips. In this paper, we formally define the bus ridesharing problem and propose a large-scale bus ridesharing service to resolve this problem. In our proposed model, the rider can use an online bus-hailing service to upload his or her trip demand and wait to be picked up when it gathers enough people. The provider assigns drivers to riders after integrating the matched ride requests. To maximize ridesharing's success rate, we developed both exact algorithms and approximate algorithms to optimize the ride-matching service. A real-life dataset that contains 65,065-trip instances extracted from 10,585 Shanghai taxis from one day (Apr 1, 2018) is used to demonstrate that our proposed service can provide higher cost performance and on-demand bus services for every ride request. Meanwhile, it reduces the number of vehicles used by 92% and 96% and the amount of oil used by 87% and 92% compared with car ridesharing and no ridesharing, respectively.

Abstract:Planning an itinerary before traveling to a city is one of the most important travel preparation activities. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called TRIPPLANNER, leveraging a combination of location-based social network (i.e., LBSN) and taxi GPS digital footprints to achieve personalized, interactive, and traffic-aware trip planning. First, we construct a dynamic point-of-interest network model by extracting relevant information from crowdsourced LBSN and taxi GPS traces. Then, we propose a two-phase approach for personalized trip planning. In the route search phase, TRIPPLANNER works interactively with users to generate candidate routes with specified venues. In the route augmentation phase, TRIPPLANNER applies heuristic algorithms to add user's preferred venues iteratively to the candidate routes, with the objective of maximizing the route score while satisfying both the venue visiting time and total travel time constraints. To validate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach, extensive empirical studies were performed on two real-world data sets from the city of San Francisco, which contain more than 391 900 passenger delivery trips generated by 536 taxis in a month and 110 214 check-ins left by 15 680 Foursquare users in six months.

Abstract:This paper focuses on routing and scheduling of autonomous electric vehicles to provide reservation -based shared ride services, while a set of parking facilities with limited capacity are used for vehicle intermittent charging. A mixed -integer linear program model is formulated in the form of a vehicle routing problem with satellite facilities (VRPSF), subject to a series of additional time and capacity -related constraints. The objective of the model is to minimize the total operating costs of the system, including those related to vehicle miles traveled and the deployed vehicle fleet size. The number of vehicles inside each parking facility is tracked so as to ensure that the capacity is never exceeded throughout the service horizon. A customized solution method based on an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm with an explicit treatment of parking facility choices is developed. A series of numerical experiments, consisting of both hypothetical examples and a real -world case study in Hangzhou, China, have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed model and algorithm. The results demonstrate that ride -sharing services and parking facilities have the potential to significantly reduce the total vehicle energy consumption and operating costs for a shared autonomous electric taxi (SAET) operator in practical scenarios.

Abstract:We proposed and developed a taxi-sharing system that accepts taxi passengers' real-time ride requests sent from smart phones and schedules proper taxis to pick up them via ride sharing, subject to time, capacity, and monetary constraints. The monetary constraints provide incentives for both passengers and taxi drivers: passengers will not pay more compared with no ride sharing and get compensated if their travel time is lengthened due to ride sharing; taxi drivers will make money for all the detour distance due to ride sharing. While such a system is of significant social and environmental benefit, e.g., saving energy consumption and satisfying people's commute, real-time taxi-sharing has not been well studied yet. To this end, we devise a mobile-cloud architecture based taxi-sharing system. Taxi riders and taxi drivers use the taxi-sharing service provided by the system via a smart phone App. The Cloud first finds candidate taxis quickly for a taxi ride request using a taxi searching algorithm supported by a spatio-temporal index. A scheduling process is then performed in the cloud to select a taxi that satisfies the request with minimum increase in travel distance. We built an experimental platform using the GPS trajectories generated by over 33,000 taxis over a period of three months. A ride request generator is developed (available at http://cs.uic.edu/~sma/ridesharing) in terms of the stochastic process modelling real ride requests learned from the data set. Tested on this platform with extensive experiments, our proposed system demonstrated its efficiency, effectiveness and scalability. For example, when the ratio of the number of ride requests to the number of taxis is 6, our proposed system serves three times as many taxi riders as that when no ridesharing is performed while saving 11 percent in total travel distance and 7 percent taxi fare per rider.

Abstract:With the rise of the mobile internet economy, on-demand ride services (or ride-sourcing services) provided by transportation network companies (TNCs) have become prosperous as an emerging mobility service mode. In this paper, we present a simulation framework to study how such an on-demand ride services platform should optimize pricing strategies considering traffic dynamics, that it, the platform charges the passengers and pays the ride-sourcing drivers with the wage. Specifically, we use the cellular automaton model to simulate route choice behavior of both regular cars that impact background traffic dynamics and ride-sourcing cars that provide on-demand ride services in the Manhattan-like urban network. In this model, passengers are sensitive to the waiting time and price, while ride-sourcing drivers are sensitive to the wage. The proposed model framework is capable of simulating the on-demand travel behavior of multiple types of stakeholders, including the on-demand ride services platform, ride-sourcing drivers and cars, and passengers. The model also realizes the process of trip requests, passenger–driver matching, dispatching, and dynamic path planning. We quantitatively evaluate the impacts of various operational strategies on ride-sourcing and passenger behavior. The results show that it is optimal for the platform to charge a higher price and offer a higher payout ratio as demand increases, while the platform should lower its payout ratio as the number of service providers increases. Furthermore, the optimal price and payout ratio are not necessarily monotonic when the travel distance increases. This paper is one of the first quantitative studies that simulate on-demand ride services in a microscopic traffic environment with mixed regular vehicles and ride-sourcing vehicles.
QA-share: Towards efficient QoS-aware dispatching approach for urban taxi-sharing

Abstract:Taxi-sharing allows occupied taxis to pick up new passengers on the fly, promising to reduce waiting time for taxi riders and increase productivity for drivers. However, if not carefully designed, taxi-sharing may cause more harm than benefit - it becomes harder to strike the balance between driver's profit and passenger's quality of service (e.g. travel time, number of strangers that share a taxi, etc.). In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware taxi-sharing system design - QA-Share - by addressing two important challenges. First, QA-Share aims to maximize driver profit and user experience at the same time. Second, QA-Share continuously optimizes these two metrics by dynamically adapting its schedule as new requests arrive, without entering an oscillation state. To address these two challenges, we have formulated the optimization problem using integer linear programming, and derived the optimal solution under a small system scale. When the number of requests and taxis becomes large, we have devised a heuristic algorithm that has a much faster execution time. We have also studied how to minimize oscillations caused by schedule re-calculations by dynamically tuning the update threshold. We have evaluated our approach with real-world dataset in a Chinese city - ZhenJiang - which contains the GPS traces recorded by over 3,000 taxis during a period of three months in 2013. Our results show that the QoS and profit is increased by 38% compared to earlier schemes.
R-Sharing: Rendezvous for Personalized Taxi Sharing

Abstract:Dynamic taxi sharing is an effective approach to reducing travel cost and conserving energy resources. Existing taxi sharing frameworks fail to consider personal preferences of passengers on taxi-sharing and unable to group them with compatible preferences for generating the optimal sharing schedule. In this paper, we propose a novel taxi-sharing framework called R-Sharing to provide a personalized rendezvous-sharing service. It enables passengers to set their preferences on four essential sharing experience, i.e., walking distance, waiting time, travel fare, and extra travel time. Given a sharing request, R-Sharing searches the optimal set of nearby companions with compatible personal preferences and similar destination directions, recommends a rendezvous point for them to meet, and plans the shortest sharing route, such that these passengers’ probability of accepting the sharing schedule is maximized. Specifically, a companion candidate searching algorithm is proposed for searching nearby potential candidates to sharing a taxi for the request. To select the optimal subset of candidates and generate their optimal sharing schedule, we propose an exact taxi-sharing scheduling algorithm, in which, the rendezvous point is set by considering passengers’ personal preference on walking distance and road network factors, and the shortest sharing route is planned by dynamic programming. Further, a heuristic sharing scheduling algorithm is developed to improve the efficiency. Extensive experiments are conducted using a one-month taxi trajectory data set collected in Nanjing, China. Experimental results show that R-Sharing is not only effective in terms of achieving better sharing ratio and reduced total travel distance, but also provides superior sharing experiences.

A Novel Taxi Dispatch System for Smart City.

Abstract:Taxis as a kind of public transit have been taken by citizens thousands of times every day in urban areas. However, it is economically inefficient for vacant taxis to randomly cruise around to seek for passengers. In this paper, we propose a dynamic taxi dispatch system for smart city which dispatches routes with high probability to encounter passengers for vacant taxis. In the system, a dynamic probabilistic model has been established, which considers the impact of time on passenger appearance and the effect of different vacant taxis traveling route on each other's pick-up probability. Specifically, a novel feedback system has been introduced in the system, which utilizes the information about where taxis pick up passengers to amend system probabilistic model. Moreover, extensive trace-driven simulations based on real digital map of Shanghai and historical data of over 2,000 taxis demonstrate the good performance of our system.
Exploring Competitiveness of Taxis to Ride-Hailing Services from a Multidimensional Spatio-Temporal Perspective: A Case Study in Beijing, China

Abstract:As the sharing economy expands in China, the emergence of ride-hailing services has diminished the market share of the taxi industry. As a regulated and publicly convenient service with a dedicated customer base, traditional taxi industry needs to improve its own competitiveness and maintain its market share. However, the specific circumstances under which taxis can gain a competitive edge over ride-hailing services are not well-understood. Aiming to uncover the competitive potential of taxis in the ride-source market, this study proposes a methodology to explore the Competition and Cooperation Relationship (CCR) between taxis and ride-hailing services on a multidimensional spatio-temporal scale. By taking Beijing, China as a case study, we first compare different impacts of Points of Interest (POI) on the traffic volume of taxis/ride-hailing services through Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) models, and explore the corresponding times and locations where taxis/ride-hailing services are more likely to attract passengers. Based on the findings that there are strong correlations between traffic volume and spatio-temporal conditions, we establish the Competition-Cooperation Index (CCI) as a quantitative measure to characterize the CCR and then analyze the spatio-temporal distribution of CCI to identify the times and locations where taxis hold advantages in cooperative or competitive relationship relative to ride-hailing services. Furthermore, we investigate the underlying reasons for these patterns, discovering that CCI has a close connection with land use. The results of our analysis show that taxis exhibit competitive advantages over ride-hailing services under some specific circumstances and can further enhance their competitiveness by proposed targeted measures. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for both industries in formulating growth strategies and for governmental agencies in setting policies.
T-share: A Large-Scale Dynamic Taxi Ridesharing Service

Abstract:Taxi ridesharing can be of significant social and environmental benefit, e.g. by saving energy consumption and satisfying people's commute needs. Despite the great potential, taxi ridesharing, especially with dynamic queries, is not well studied. In this paper, we formally define the dynamic ridesharing problem and propose a large-scale taxi ridesharing service. It efficiently serves real-time requests sent by taxi users and generates ridesharing schedules that reduce the total travel distance significantly. In our method, we first propose a taxi searching algorithm using a spatio-temporal index to quickly retrieve candidate taxis that are likely to satisfy a user query. A scheduling algorithm is then proposed. It checks each candidate taxi and inserts the query's trip into the schedule of the taxi which satisfies the query with minimum additional incurred travel distance. To tackle the heavy computational load, a lazy shortest path calculation strategy is devised to speed up the scheduling algorithm. We evaluated our service using a GPS trajectory dataset generated by over 33,000 taxis during a period of 3 months. By learning the spatio-temporal distributions of real user queries from this dataset, we built an experimental platform that simulates user real behaviours in taking a taxi. Tested on this platform with extensive experiments, our approach demonstrated its efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability. For example, our proposed service serves 25% additional taxi users while saving 13% travel distance compared with no-ridesharing (when the ratio of the number of queries to that of taxis is 6).
An Optimization Framework for Online Ride-Sharing Markets

Abstract:Taxi services and product delivery services are instrumental for our modern society. Thanks to the emergence of sharing economy, ride-sharing services such as Uber, Didi, Lyft and Google's Waze Rider are becoming more ubiquitous and grow into an integral part of our everyday lives. However, the efficiency of these services are severely limited by the sub-optimal and imbalanced matching between the supply and demand. We need a generalized framework and corresponding efficient algorithms to address the efficient matching, and hence optimize the performance of these markets. Existing studies for taxi and delivery services are only applicable in scenarios of the one-sided market. In contrast, this work investigates a highly generalized model for the taxi and delivery services in the market economy (abbreviated as"taxi and delivery market") that can be widely used in two-sided markets. Further, we present efficient online and offline algorithms for different applications. We verify our algorithm with theoretical analysis and trace-driven simulations under realistic settings.

Abstract:Ridesharing is a challenging topic in the urban computing paradigm, which utilizes urban sensors to generate a wealth of benefits and thus is an important branch in ubiquitous computing. Traditionally, ridesharing is achieved by mainly considering the received user ridesharing requests and then returns solutions to users. However, there lack research efforts of examining user acceptance to the proposed solutions. To our knowledge, user decisions in accepting/rejecting a rideshare is one of the crucial, yet not well studied, factors in the context of dynamic ridesharing. Moreover, existing research attention is mainly paid to find the nearest taxi, whilst in reality the nearest taxi may not be the optimal answer. In this paper, we tackle the above un-addressed issues while preserving the scalability of the system. We present a scalable framework, namely TRIPS, which supports the probability of accepting each request by the companion passengers and minimizes users’ efforts. In TRIPS, we propose three search techniques to increase the efficiency of the proposed ridesharing service. We also reformulate the criteria for searching and ranking ridesharing alternatives and propose indexing techniques to optimize the process. Our approach is validated using a real, large-scale dataset of 10,357 GPS-equipped taxis in the city of Beijing, China and showcases its effectiveness on the ridesharing task.
Understanding the potential of taxi sharing: The case of Chengdu

Abstract:The emergence of taxi sharing enhances urban transport efficiency and reduces carbon emissions. Using GPS tracking data from taxis in Chengdu, China, this study first outlines conditions for identifying shareable taxi orders based on their origins and destinations. We then develop a three-phase computational model to optimize matches among all potential shareable orders, calculating the shareable mileage and the proportion of original mileage that could be shared. Our comprehensive temporal and spatial analysis reveal a significant market for taxi sharing in Chengdu, with higher potential on workdays than non-workdays and four distinct demand peaks throughout the day. The morning peak on workdays and the night peak on non-workdays are particularly pronounced. Most shareable orders originate within major city districts. We find a positive correlation between the potential of taxi sharing and average traffic speed, and negative correlations with order volume, regional economic development, and population density. Functional zones related to Enterprises, Motorcycle Services, and Transportation Services exhibit significantly higher sharing potential. Compared to traditional taxi operations, taxi sharing significantly reduces total travel mileage. This quantitative analysis offers insights into the potential demand for taxi sharing among urban residents and may help government authorities optimize taxi resources for the sustainable development of urban transport.

Abstract:This paper builds a Food Delivery Network (FooDNet in short) using spatial crowdsourcing (SC). It investigates the participation of urban taxis to support on demand take-out food delivery. Unlike existing SC-enabled service sharing systems (e.g., ridesharing), the delivery of food in FooDNet is more time-sensitive and the optimization problem is more complex regarding high-efficiency, huge-number of delivery needs. In particular, two on demand food delivery problems under different situations are studied in our work: (1) for O-OTOD, the food is opportunistically delivered by taxis when carrying passengers, and the optimization goal is to minimize the number of selected taxis to maintain a relatively high incentive to the participated drivers; (2) for D-OTOD, taxis dedicatedly deliver food without taking passengers, and the aim is to minimize the number of selected taxis (i.e., to raise the reward for each participant) and the total traveling distance to reduce the cost. A two-stage approach, including the construction algorithm and the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) algorithm based on simulated annealing, is proposed to solve the problem. We have conducted extensive experiments based on the real-world datasets, including city-wide restaurant data, cell tower data, and the large-scale taxi trajectory data with 10,000 taxis in the city of Chengdu, China. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms are more effective and efficient than baselines, fulfilling the food delivery service using a smaller number of taxis within the given time.

Abstract:This paper builds a Food Delivery Network (FooDNet) that investigates the usage of urban taxis to support on demand take-out food delivery by leveraging spatial crowdsourcing. Unlike existing service sharing systems (e.g., ridesharing), the delivery of food in FooDNet is more time-sensitive and the optimization problem is more complex regarding high-efficiency, huge-number of delivery needs. In particular, we study the food delivery problem in association with the Opportunistic Online Takeout Ordering & Delivery service (O-OTOD). Specifically, the food is delivered incidentally by taxis when carrying passengers in the O-OTOD problem, and the optimization goal is to minimize the number of selected taxis to maintain a relative high incentive to the participated drivers. The two-stage method is proposed to solve the problem, consisting of the construction algorithm and the Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) algorithm. Preliminary experiments based on real-world taxi trajectory datasets verify that our proposed algorithms are effective and efficient.
Taxi Exp: A Novel Framework for City-Wide Package Express Shipping via Taxi Crowd Sourcing

Abstract:Despite the great demand on and attempts at package express shipping services such as the same-day delivery feasible for online firms, turning a profit is still difficult. To develop more economical or even cost-free transportation of packages, in this paper, we propose to make use of the existing taxis on the street that are delivering passengers, in a crowd-sourced manner. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that exploits taxis occupied by passengers to help deliver package collectively, without hurting the quality of taxi services. Specifically, we propose a two-phase framework for the package express shipping. In the first phase, we rank the road segments according to their influential factor values, which is similar to the idea of identifying key people in social networks. Hubs are then identified based on the ranking and the geographical locations of the road segments. In the second phase, we develop two inter-hub routing algorithms, namely, First-Come-First-Service (FCFS) and Destination-Closer (Des Closer), to ship a package to its destination. We evaluate the two-phase framework on a large-scale real-world taxi data set, generated by 7,600 taxis in a month. Results show that, on average, the package delivery time based on Des Closer is 5.3 hours, which is 2.6x shorter than that of FCFS, the number of participating taxis per package based on Des Closer is 3.10, which is 10.6x fewer than that of FCFS.

The main goal is to design and demonstrate a prototype of social network enabled transportation system which enables communication between electrical vehicles, monitoring, information gathering, assistant driving and traffic flow control. This service-oriented system targets on significant reduction in energy consumption, pollution impact, traffic congestion, and provides solutions with affordable costs from perspective of both individual travelers and transportation agencies.

To this end, in this paper, we model the time-varying regularities of traffic flows, activity ratios of passengers, and unoccupied taxicabs of road segments by mining statistical data on taxicab trajectories. Along this line, we propose a novel approach to calculate the expected revenue of possible routes for individual taxicabs while considering the influence of others, and at the same time, advance a dynamic taxicab scheduling mechanism with online taxicab calling information. Finally, we evaluate our algorithm on real-world taxicab data. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing alternative solutions in terms of average revenue of taxi drivers.

Abstract:The increasing rate of urbanization has added pressure on the already constrained transportation networks in our communities. Ride-sharing platforms such as Uber and Lyft are becoming a more commonplace, particularly in urban environments. While such services may be deemed more convenient than riding public transit due to their on-demand nature, reports show that they do not necessarily decrease the congestion in major cities. One of the key problems is that typically mobility decision support systems focus on individual utility and react only after congestion appears. In this paper, we propose socially considerate multi-modal routing algorithms that are proactive and consider, via predictions, the shared effect of riders on the overall efficacy of mobility services. We have adapted the MATSim simulator framework to incorporate the proposed algorithms present a simulation analysis of a case study in Nashville, Tennessee that assesses the effects of our routing models on the traffic congestion for different levels of penetration and adoption of socially considerate routes. Our results indicate that even at a low penetration (social ratio), we are able to achieve an improvement in system-level performance.

Abstract:In the last decade, the development of electric taxis has motivated rapidly growing research interest in efficiently allocating electric charging stations in the academic literature. To address the driving pattern of electric taxis, we introduce the perspective of transport energy supply chain to capture the charging demand and to transform the charging station allocation problem to a location problem. Based on the P-median and the Min-max models, we developed a data-driven method to evaluate the system efficiency and service quality. We also conduct a case study using GPS trajectory data in Beijing, where various location strategies are evaluated from perspectives of system efficiency and service quality. Also, situations with and without congestion are comparatively evaluated.
