Abstract:To a planar algebra P in the sense of Jones we associate a natural non- commutative ring, which can be viewed as the ring of non-commutative polynomials in several indeterminates, invariant under a symmetry encoded by P. We show that this ring carries a natural structure of a non-commutative probability space. Non-commutative laws on this space turn out to describe random matrix ensembles possessing special sym- metries. As application, we give a canonical construction of a subfactor and its symmetric enveloping algebra associated to a given planar algebra P. This talk is based on joint work with A. Guionnet and V. Jones.

A Finite Graph Approach to the Probabilistic Hadwiger-Nelson Problem

Abstract:We advance a probabilistic approach to the Hadwiger-Nelson problem initially developed by the Polymath16 project, in particular relating the approach to finite unit-distance graphs. We define the numerical \textit{badness} of a given $k$-coloring of the plane to be the probability that a randomly chosen unit-distance edge is monochromatic under the coloring, and we provide lower bounds on the badness of arbitrary $k$-colorings using a probabilistic technique relating to finite graphs. The contrapositive of the resulting bounds lets us compute lower bounds on the order of non $k$-colorable unit-distance graphs, improving bounds produced by Pritikin and the Polymath16 project in the $k = 4$ and $k = 5$ cases. Additionally, we make partial progress on a probabilistic analog of the de Bruijn-Erdős compactness theorem.

Moduli Space Tilings and Lie-Theoretic Color Factors

Abstract:A detailed understanding of the moduli spaces $X(k,n)$ of $n$ points in projective $k-1$ space is essential to the investigation of generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes, as discovered by Cachazo, Early, Guevara and Mizera (CEGM) in 2019. But in math, conventional wisdom says that it is completely hopeless due to the arbitrarily high complexity of realization spaces of oriented matroids. In this paper, we nonetheless find a path forward. We present a Lie-theoretic realization of color factors for color-dressed generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes, formulated in terms of certain tilings of the real moduli space $X(k,n)$ and collections of logarithmic differential forms, resolving an important open question from recent work by Cachazo, Early and Zhang. The main idea is to replace the realization space decomposition of $X(k,n)$ with a large class of overlapping tilings whose topologies are individually relatively simple. So we obtain a collection of color-dressed amplitudes, each of which satisfies $U(1)$ decoupling separately. The essential complexity appears when they are all superposed.

Abstract:The representations of various color Lie superalgebras by Hilbert series are the main topic of this work. The Color Lie superalgebras appear in various branches of mathematics (e.g., topology, algebraic groups, etc.). They are generalized Lie superalgebras. A generating function known as the Hilbert series of color Lie superalgebras which encodes crucial knowledge about the superalgebras representation. In particular, it provides a way to count the number of states in the a given degree. We present a dimension formula that resembles Witt's formula for free color Lie superalgebras, and a specific class of color Lie p-superalgebras.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:This is a treatise on finite point configurations spanning a fixed volume to be found in a single color-class of an arbitrary finite (measurable) coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, or in a single large measurable subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$. More specifically, we study vertex-sets of simplices, rectangular boxes, and parallelotopes, attempting to make progress on several open problems posed in the 1970s and the 1980s. As one of the highlights, we give the negative answer to a question of Erdős and Graham, by coloring the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ in $25$ colors without creating monochromatic rectangles of unit area. More generally, we construct a finite coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that no color-class contains the $2^m$ vertices of any (possibly rotated) $m$-dimensional rectangular box of volume $1$. A positive result is still possible if rectangular boxes of merely sufficiently large volumes are sought in a single color-class of a finite measurable coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and we establish it under an additional assumption $n\geq m+1$. Also, motivated by a question of Graham on reasonable bounds in his result on monochromatic axes-aligned right-angled $m$-dimensional simplices, we establish its measurable coloring and density variants with polylogarithmic bounds, again in dimensions $n\geq m+1$. Next, we generalize a result of Erdős and Mauldin, by constructing an infinite measure set $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ such that every $n$-parallelotope with vertices in $A$ has volume strictly smaller than $1$. Finally, some results complementing the literature on isometric embeddings of hypercube graphs and on the hyperbolic analogue of the Hadwiger--Nelson problem also follow as byproducts of our approaches.

Interlacing triangles, Schubert puzzles, and graph colorings

Abstract:We show that interlacing triangular arrays, introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler to study certain probability measures, can be used to compute structure constants for multiplying Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians, in the cohomology of their cotangent bundles, and in the cohomology of partial flag varieties. Our results are achieved by establishing a splitting lemma, allowing for interlacing triangular arrays of high rank to be decomposed into arrays of lower rank, and by constructing a bijection between interlacing triangular arrays of rank 3 with certain proper vertex colorings of the triangular grid graph that factors through generalizations of Knutson-Tao puzzles. Along the way, we prove one enumerative conjecture of Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler and disprove another.

Abstract:These are notes from a three-lecture mini-course on free probability given at MSRI in the Fall of 2010 and repeated a year later at Harvard. The lectures were aimed at mathematicians and mathematical physicists working in combinatorics, probability, and random matrix theory. The first lecture was a staged rediscovery of free independence from first principles, the second dealt with the additive calculus of free random variables, and the third focused on random matrix models.

Abstract:For a given Lie superalgebra, two ways of constructing color superalgebras are presented. One of them is based on the color superalgebraic nature of the Clifford algebras. The method is applicable to any Lie superalgebras and results in color superalgebra of $ {\mathbb Z}_2^{\otimes N} $ grading. The other is discussed with an example, a superalgebra of boson and fermion operators. By treating the boson operators as "second" fermionic sector we obtain a color superalgebra of ${\mathbb Z}_2 \otimes {\mathbb Z}_2$ grading. A vector field representation of the color superalgebra obtaind from the boson-fermion system is also presented.

Skein Theory for Affine A Subfactor Planar Algebras

Abstract:The Kuperberg Program asks to find presentations of planar algebras and use these presentations to prove results about their corresponding categories purely diagrammatically. This program has been completed for index less than 4 and is ongoing research for index greater than 4. We give generators-and-relations presentations for the affine A subfactor planar algebras of index 4. Exclusively using the planar algebra language, we give new proofs to how many such planar algebras exist. Categories corresponding to these planar algebras are monoidally equivalent to cyclic pointed fusion categories. We give a proof of this by defining a functor yielding a monoidal equivalence between the two categories. The categories are also monoidally equivalent to a representation category of a cyclic subgroup of SU(2). We give a new proof of this fact, explicitly using the diagrammatic presentations found. This gives novel diagrammatics for these representation categories.

Abstract:The Four color problem is closely related to other branches of mathematics and practical applications. More than 20 of its reformulations are known, which connect this problem with problems of algebra, statistical mechanics and planning. And this is also typical for mathematics: the solution to a problem studied out of pure curiosity turns out to be useful in representing real objects and processes that are completely different in nature. Despite the published machine methods for combinatorial proof of the Four color conjecture, there is still no clear description of the mechanism for coloring a planar graph with four colors, its natural essence and its connection with the phenomenon of graph planarity. It is necessary not only to prove (preferably by deductive methods) that any planar graph can be colored with four colors, but also to show how to color it. The paper considers an approach based on the possibility of reducing a maximally flat graph to a regular flat cubic graph with its further coloring. Based on the Tate-Volynsky theorem, the vertices of a maximally flat graph can be colored with four colors, if the edges of its dual cubic graph can be colored with three colors. Considering the properties of a colored cubic graph, it can be shown that the addition of colors obeys the transformation laws of the fourth order Klein group. Using this property, it is possible to create algorithms for coloring planar graphs.

We address a problem which is a generalization of Turán-type problems recently introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nagy, and Váli. Let [math] be a fixed graph and let [math] be the union of [math] edge-disjoint copies of [math], namely [math], where each [math] is isomorphic to a fixed graph [math] and [math] for all [math]. We call a subgraph [math] multicolored if [math] and [math] share at most one edge for all [math]. Define [math] to be the maximum value [math] such that there exists [math] on [math] vertices without a multicolored copy of [math]. We show that [math] and that all extremal graphs are close to a blow-up of the 5-cycle. This bound is tight up to the linear error term.

Uniformly Random Colourings of Sparse Graphs

Abstract:We analyse uniformly random proper $k$-colourings of sparse graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ in the regime $\Delta < k\ln k $. This regime corresponds to the lower side of the shattering threshold for random graph colouring, a paradigmatic example of the shattering threshold for random Constraint Satisfaction Problems. We prove a variety of results about the solution space geometry of colourings of fixed graphs, generalising work of Achlioptas, Coja-Oghlan, and Molloy on random graphs, and justifying the performance of stochastic local search algorithms in this regime. Our central proof relies only on elementary techniques, namely the first-moment method and a quantitative induction, yet it strengthens list-colouring results due to Vu, and more recently Davies, Kang, P., and Sereni, and generalises state-of-the-art bounds from Ramsey theory in the context of sparse graphs. It further yields an approximately tight lower bound on the number of colourings, also known as the partition function of the Potts model, with implications for efficient approximate counting.

Algebraic groups in non-commutative probability theory revisited

Abstract:The role of coalgebras as well as algebraic groups in non-commutative probability has long been advocated by the school of von Waldenfels and Schürmann. Another algebraic approach was introduced more recently, based on shuffle and pre-Lie calculus, and results in another construction of groups of characters encoding the behaviour of states. Comparing the two, the first approach, recast recently in a general categorical language by Manzel and Schürmann, can be seen as largely driven by the theory of universal products, whereas the second construction builds on Hopf algebras and a suitable algebraization of the combinatorics of noncrossing set partitions. Although both address the same phenomena, moving between the two viewpoints is not obvious. We present here an attempt to unify the two approaches by making explicit the Hopf algebraic connections between them. Our presentation, although relying largely on classical ideas as well as results closely related to Manzel and Schürmann's aforementioned work, is nevertheless original on several points and fills a gap in the non-commutative probability literature. In particular, we systematically use the language and techniques of algebraic groups together with shuffle group techniques to prove that two notions of algebraic groups naturally associated with free, respectively Boolean and monotone, probability theories identify. We also obtain explicit formulas for various Hopf algebraic structures and detail arguments that had been left implicit in the literature.

Abstract:We study coloured invariants of torus knots (where are coprime positive integers). When the colouring Lie algebra is simply-laced, and when , we use the representation theory of the corresponding principal affine algebras to understand the trailing monomials of the coloured invariants. In these cases, we show that the appropriate limits of the renormalized invariants are equal to the characters of certain algebra modules (up to some factors); this result on limits rests on a purely Lie-algebraic conjecture on asymptotic weight multiplicities which we verify in some examples.

Refining the grading of irreducible Lie colour algebra representations

Abstract:We apply the loop module construction of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.05114" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.05114">arXiv:1504.05114</a> in the context of Lie colour algebras. We construct a bijection between the equivalence classes of all finite-dimensional graded irreducible Lie colour algebra representations from the irreducible representations for Lie superalgebras. This bijection is obtained by applying the loop module construction iteratively to simple groups in the Jordan--Hölder decomposition of the grading group. Restricting to simple groups in this way greatly simplifies the construction. Despite the bijection between Lie colour algebra representations and Lie superalgebra representations, Lie colour algebras maintain a non-trivial representation theory distinct from that of Lie superalgebras. We demonstrate the applicability of the loop module construction to Lie colour algebras in two examples: a Hilbert space for a quantum mechanical model and representations of a colour version of $ \mathfrak{sl}_2 $.

Abstract:We exhibit a one-to-one correspondence between $3$-colored graphs and subarrangements of certain hyperplane arrangements denoted $\mathcal J_n$, $n \in \mathbb N$. We define the notion of centrality of $3$-colored graphs which corresponds to the centrality of hyperplane arrangements. Via the correspondence, the characteristic polynomial $\chi_{\mathcal J_n}$ of $\mathcal J_n$ can be expressed in terms of the number of central $3$-colored graphs, and we compute $\chi_{\mathcal J_n}$ for $n = 2, 3$.
