Abstract:Topological Weyl semimetal (TWS), a new state of quantum matter, has sparked enormous research interest recently. Possessing unique Weyl fermions in the bulk and Fermi arcs on the surface, TWSs offer a rare platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. TWSs can be classified into type-I that respect Lorentz symmetry and type-II that do not. Here, we directly visualize the electronic structure of MoTe2, a recently proposed type-II TWS. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we unravel the unique surface Fermi arcs, in good agreement with our ab-initio calculations. From spin-resolved ARPES measurements, we demonstrate the non-degenerate spin-texture of surface Fermi-arcs, thereby proving their non-trivial topological nature. Our work not only lead to new understandings of the unusual properties discovered in this family of compounds, but also allow for the further exploration of exotic properties and practical applications of type-II TWSs, as well as the interplay between superconductivity (MoTe2 was discovered to be superconducting recently) and their topological order.

Abstract:Newly emergent type-II Weyl semimetals with topological surface states so-called Fermi arcs have attracted much attention for their novel physical properties and potential application in quantum devices. Here, we investigate the in-plane anisotropic structure and inversion symmetry breaking by angle-resolved polarized Raman and second harmonic generation and observe the anisotropic Shubnikov-de Haas effect in Weyl Semimetal MoTe2, which is only present in the b-axis (armchair chain) direction. First-principles calculation depicts the type-II Weyl points and clear topological Fermi arcs. A nontrivial π Berry's phase from Landau quantization and an extra-quantum oscillation frequency arising by Weyl orbit are obtained, which provide evidence for the existence of an anisotropic type-II Weyl state in MoTe2. This work reveals the nontrivial topological surface state of Weyl semimetal MoTe2 in both theory and experiment, providing a promising platform for unique physical properties and applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract:The recent discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs offers the first Weyl fermion observed in nature and dramatically broadens the classification of topological phases. However, in TaAs it has proven challenging to study the rich transport phenomena arising from emergent Weyl fermions. The series MoxW1 - xTe2 are inversion-breaking, layered, tunable semimetals already under study as a promising platform for new electronics and recently proposed to host Type II, or strongly Lorentz-violating, Weyl fermions. Here we report the discovery of a Weyl semimetal in MoxW1 - xTe2 at x = 25%. We use pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (pump-probe ARPES) to directly observe a topological Fermi arc above the Fermi level, demonstrating a Weyl semimetal. The excellent agreement with calculation suggests that MoxW1 - xTe2 is a Type II Weyl semimetal. We also find that certain Weyl points are at the Fermi level, making MoxW1 - xTe2 a promising platform for transport and optics experiments on Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:Quantum topological materials, exemplified by topological insulators, three-dimensional Dirac semimetals and Weyl semimetals, have attracted much attention recently because of their unique electronic structure and physical properties. Very lately it is proposed that the three-dimensional Weyl semimetals can be further classified into two types. In the type I Weyl semimetals, a topologically protected linear crossing of two bands, i.e., a Weyl point, occurs at the Fermi level resulting in a point-like Fermi surface. In the type II Weyl semimetals, the Weyl point emerges from a contact of an electron and a hole pocket at the boundary resulting in a highly tilted Weyl cone. In type II Weyl semimetals, the Lorentz invariance is violated and a fundamentally new kind of Weyl Fermions is produced that leads to new physical properties. WTe2 is interesting because it exhibits anomalously large magnetoresistance. It has ignited a new excitement because it is proposed to be the first candidate of realizing type II Weyl Fermions. Here we report our angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) evidence on identifying the type II Weyl Fermion state in WTe2. By utilizing our latest generation laser-based ARPES system with superior energy and momentum resolutions, we have revealed a full picture on the electronic structure of WTe2. Clear surface state has been identified and its connection with the bulk electronic states in the momentum and energy space shows a good agreement with the calculated band structures with the type II Weyl states. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence on the observation of type II Weyl states in WTe2. It has laid a foundation for further exploration of novel phenomena and physical properties in the type II Weyl semimetals.

Abstract: Weyl semimetals have sparked intense research interest, but experimental work has been limited to the TaAs family of compounds. Recently, a number of theoretical works have predicted that compounds in the Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ series are Weyl semimetals. Such proposals are particularly exciting because Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ has a quasi two-dimensional crystal structure well-suited to many transport experiments, while WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ have already been the subject of numerous proposals for device applications. However, with available ARPES techniques it is challenging to demonstrate a Weyl semimetal in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$. According to the predictions, the Weyl points are above the Fermi level, the system approaches two critical points as a function of doping, there are many irrelevant bulk bands, the Fermi arcs are nearly degenerate with bulk bands and the bulk band gap is small. Here, we study Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ for $x = 0.07$ and 0.45 using pump-probe ARPES. The system exhibits a dramatic response to the pump laser and we successfully access states $> 0.2$eV above the Fermi level. For the first time, we observe direct, experimental signatures of Fermi arcs in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$, which agree well with theoretical calculations of the surface states. However, we caution that the interpretation of these features depends sensitively on free parameters in the surface state calculation. We comment on the prospect of conclusively demonstrating a Weyl semimetal in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$.

Abstract:We present experimental evidence of an intriguing phase transition between distinct topological states in the type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. We observe anomalies in the Raman phonon frequencies and linewidths as well as electronic quasielastic peaks around 70 K, which, together with structural, thermodynamic measurements, and electron-phonon coupling calculations, demonstrate a temperature-induced transition between two topological phases previously identified by contrasting spectroscopic measurements. An analysis of experimental data suggests electron-phonon coupling as the main driving mechanism for the change of key topological characters in the electronic structure of MoTe2.We also find the phase transition to be sensitive to sample conditions distinguished by synthesis methods. These discoveries of temperature and material condition-dependent topological phase evolutions and transitions in MoTe2 advance the fundamental understanding of the underlying physics and enable an effective approach to tuning Weyl semimetal states for technological applications.

Abstract:It has recently been proposed that electronic band structures in crystals give rise to a previously overlooked type of Weyl fermion, which violates Lorentz invariance and, consequently, is forbidden in particle physics. It was further predicted that Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ may realize such a Type II Weyl fermion. One crucial challenge is that the Weyl points in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ are predicted to lie above the Fermi level. Here, by studying a simple model for a Type II Weyl cone, we clarify the importance of accessing the unoccupied band structure to demonstrate that Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ is a Weyl semimetal. Then, we use pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (pump-probe ARPES) to directly observe the unoccupied band structure of Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$. For the first time, we directly access states $> 0.2$ eV above the Fermi level. By comparing our results with $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations, we conclude that we directly observe the surface state containing the topological Fermi arc. Our work opens the way to studying the unoccupied band structure as well as the time-domain relaxation dynamics of Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ and related transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Recently, researchers from the Department of Physics at Tsinghua University and collaborators have made important progress in the study of Weyl semimetals. They have report-ed the first experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in a type-II semimetal MoTe2, thus confirming the violation of Lorentz invariance in type-II Weyl fermions in a real material. The re-sults were published online in Nature Physics on Sept. 6, 2016. This is a major progress in the field of condensed matter physics, after the realization of type-I Weyl fermions. What are type-II Weyl fermions? And how is it different from type-I Weyl fermions? Here we shall give a brief introduc-tion.

Revealing Fermi Arcs and Weyl Nodes in MoTe 2 by Quasiparticle Interference Mapping

Abstract:A Weyl semimetal exhibits unique properties with Weyl nodes in the bulk and Fermi arcs on the surface. Recently, MoTe2 was found to be a type-II Weyl semimetal, providing a platform for realizing these Weyl physics. Here, we report visualization of topological surface states on the surface of MoTe2 using a scanning tunneling microscope. Scattering between topological states forms quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns in the Fourier transform of conductance maps. The complete existence of topological surface states in energy momentum space is revealed by dI/dV mapping. By comparing QPI results with a first-principles calculation, we further unveil the locations of Weyl nodes in the surface Brillouin zone. Our work provides spectroscopic information in the unoccupied states, especially those around the Weyl nodes energy, demonstrating the node-arc correlation in Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:It has recently been proposed that electronic band structures in crystals can give rise to a previously overlooked type of Weyl fermion, which violates Lorentz invariance and, consequently, is forbidden in particle physics. It was further predicted that MoxW1-xTe2 may realize such a type-II Weyl fermion. Here, we first show theoretically that it is crucial to access the band structure above the Fermi level epsilon(F) to show a Weyl semimetal in MoxW1-xTe2. Then, we study MoxW1-xTe2 by pump-probe ARPES and we directly access the band structure > 0.2 eV above epsilon(F) in experiment. By comparing our results with ab initio calculations, we conclude that we directly observe the surface state containing the topological Fermi arc. We propose that a future study of MoxW1-xTe2 by pump-probe ARPES may directly pinpoint the Fermi arc. Our work sets the stage for the experimental discovery of the first type-II Weyl semimetal in MoxW1-xTe2.

Abstract:Weyl semimetals are conductors whose low-energy bulk excitations are Weyl fermions, whereas their surfaces possess metallic Fermi arc surface states. These Fermi arc surface states are protected by a topological invariant associated with the bulk electronic wave functions of the material. Recently, it has been shown that the TaAs and NbAs classes of materials harbor such a state of topological matter. We review the basic phenomena and experimental history of the discovery of the first Weyl semimetals, starting with the observation of topological Fermi arcs and Weyl nodes in TaAs and NbAs by angle and spin-resolved surface and bulk sensitive photoemission spectroscopy and continuing through magnetotransport measurements reporting the Adler–Bell–Jackiw chiral anomaly. We hope that this article provides a useful introduction to the theory of Weyl semimetals, a summary of recent experimental discoveries, and a guideline to future directions.

Abstract:The recent discovery of the first Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature and demonstrates a novel type of anomalous surface state, the Fermi arc. Like topological insulators, the bulk topological invariants of a Weyl semimetal are uniquely fixed by the surface states of a bulk sample. Here we present a set of distinct conditions, accessible by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), each of which demonstrates topological Fermi arcs in a surface state band structure, with minimal reliance on calculation. We apply these results to TaAs and NbP. For the first time, we rigorously demonstrate a nonzero Chern number in TaAs by counting chiral edge modes on a closed loop. We further show that it is unreasonable to directly observe Fermi arcs in NbP by ARPES within available experimental resolution and spectral linewidth. Our results are general and apply to any new material to demonstrate a Weyl semimetal.
Measuring Chern numbers above the Fermi level in the Type II Weyl semimetal Mo W Te

Abstract:It has recently been proposed that electronic band structures in crystals give rise to a previously overlooked type of Weyl fermion, which violates Lorentz invariance and, consequently, is forbidden in particle physics. It was further predicted that Mo W Te may realize such a Type II Weyl fermion. One crucial challenge is that the Weyl points in Mo W Te are predicted to lie above the Fermi level. Here, by studying a simple model for a Type II Weyl cone, we clarify the importance of accessing the unoccupied band structure to demonstrate that Mo W Te is a Weyl semimetal. Then, we use pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (pump-probe ARPES) to directly observe the unoccupied band structure of Mo W Te . For the first time, we directly access states eV above the Fermi level. By comparing our results with calculations, we conclude that we directly observe the surface state containing the topological Fermi arc. Our work opens the way to studying the unoccupied band structure as well as the time-domain relaxation dynamics of Mo W Te and related transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Weyl nodes and Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have led to lots of exotic transport phenomena. Recently, Mo0.25W0.75Te2 has been established as a type-II WSM with Weyl points located near Fermi level, which offers an opportunity to study its intriguing band structure by electrical transport measurements. Here, by selecting a special sample with the thickness gradient across two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) regimes, we show strong evidence that Mo0.25W0.75Te2 is a type-II Weyl semimetal by observing the following two dimensionality-dependent transport features: (1) a chiral-anomaly-induced anisotropic magnetoconductivity enhancement, proportional to the square of in-plane magnetic field (B-in(2)); and (2) an additional quantum oscillation with thickness-dependent phase shift. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed quantum oscillation originates from a Weyl-orbit-like scenario due to the unique band structure of Mo0.25W0.75Te2. The in situ dimensionality-tuned transport experiment offers an alternative strategy to search for type-II WSMs.

Abstract:The experimental manifestation of topological effects in bulk materials is attracting enormous research interest. However, direct experimental evidence of the effective k-space monopole of the Weyl nodes has so far been lacking. Here, signatures of the singular topology of the type-II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe4 are revealed in the photoresponses, which are related to divergence of the Berry curvature. TaIrTe4 exhibits a large photoresponsivity of 130.2 mA W−1—with 4 μm excitation in an unbiased field-effect transistor at room temperature—arising from the third-order nonlinear optical response, approaching the performance of commercial low-temperature detectors. In addition, the circularly polarized galvanic response is enhanced at 4 μm, possibly due to the same Berry curvature singularity enhancement. Considering the optical selection rule of chiral Weyl cones, this may open the door for studying and controlling the chiral polarization of Weyl fermions with an electric field in addition to the optical helicities. A large photoresponse is observed in the type-II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe4, and attributed to the diverging Berry curvature of the Weyl nodes.

Abstract:Weyl physics emerges in the laboratory Weyl fermions—massless particles with half-integer spin—were once mistakenly thought to describe neutrinos. Although not yet observed among elementary particles, Weyl fermions may exist as collective excitations in so-called Weyl semimetals. These materials have an unusual band structure in which the linearly dispersing valence and conduction bands meet at discrete “Weyl points.” Xu et al. used photoemission spectroscopy to identify TaAs as a Weyl semimetal capable of hosting Weyl fermions. In a complementary study, Lu et al. detected the characteristic Weyl points in a photonic crystal. The observation of Weyl physics may enable the discovery of exotic fundamental phenomena.
