Abstract:Let $M$ be a 3-connected binary matroid and let $Y(M)$ be the set of elements of $M$ avoiding at least $r(M)+1$ non-separating cocircuits of $M$. Lemos proved that $M$ is non-graphic if and only if $Y(M)\neq\emp$. We generalize this result when by establishing that $Y(M)$ is very large when $M$ is non-graphic and $M$ has no $M\s(K_{3,3}"')$-minor if $M$ is regular. More precisely that $|E(M)-Y(M)|\le 1$ in this case. We conjecture that when $M$ is a regular matroid with an $M\s(K_{3,3})$-minor, then $r\s_M(E(M)-Y(M))\le 2$. The proof of such conjecture is reduced to a computational verification.

Abstract:Gross, Mansour, and Tucker introduced the partial-duality polynomial of a ribbon graph [Distributions, European J. Combin. 86, 1--20, 2020], the generating function enumerating partial duals by the Euler genus. Chmutov and Vignes-Tourneret wondered if this polynomial and its conjectured properties would hold for general delta-matroids, which are combinatorial abstractions of ribbon graphs. Yan and Jin contributed to this inquiry by identifying a subset of delta-matroids-specifically, even normal binary ones-whose twist polynomials are characterized by a singular term. Building upon this foundation, the current paper expands the scope of the investigation to encompass even non-binary delta-matroids, revealing that none of them have width-changing twists.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of graphic cocircuits and show that a large class of regular matroids with graphic cocircuits belongs to the class of signed-graphic matroids. Moreover, we provide an algorithm which determines whether a cographic matroid with graphic cocircuits is signed-graphic or not.

Abstract:We show that the number of linear spaces on a set of $n$ points and the number of rank-3 matroids on a ground set of size $n$ are both of the form $(cn+o(n))^{n^2/6}$, where $c=e^{\sqrt 3/2-3}(1+\sqrt 3)/2$. This is the final piece of the puzzle for enumerating fixed-rank matroids at this level of accuracy: the numbers of rank-1 and rank-2 matroids on a ground set of size $n$ have exact representations in terms of well-known combinatorial functions, and it was recently proved by van der Hofstad, Pendavingh, and van der Pol that for constant $r\ge 4$ there are $(e^{1-r}n+o(n))^{n^{r-1}/r!}$ rank-$r$ matroids on a ground set of size $n$. In our proof, we introduce a new approach for bounding the number of clique decompositions of a complete graph, using quasirandomness instead of the so-called entropy method that is common in this area.

Abstract:Sparse graphs and their associated matroids play an important role in rigidity theory, where they capture the combinatorics of generically rigid structures. We define a new family called {\bf graded sparse graphs}, arising from generically pinned (completely immobilized) bar-and-joint frameworks and prove that they also form matroids. We address five problems on graded sparse graphs: {\bf Decision}, {\bf Extraction}, {\bf Components}, {\bf Optimization}, and {\bf Extension}. We extend our {\bf pebble game algorithms} to solve them.

Abstract:We establish a connection between problems studied in rigidity theory and matroids arising from linear algebraic constructions like tensor products and symmetric products. A special case of this correspondence identifies the problem of giving a description of the correctable erasure patterns in a maximally recoverable tensor code with the problem of describing bipartite rigid graphs or low-rank completable matrix patterns. Additionally, we relate dependencies among symmetric products of generic vectors to graph rigidity and symmetric matrix completion. With an eye toward applications to computer science, we study the dependency of these matroids on the characteristic by giving new combinatorial descriptions in several cases, including the first description of the correctable patterns in an (m, n, a=2, b=2) maximally recoverable tensor code.

Abstract:Colourings and flows are well-known dual notions in graph theory. In turn, the definition of flows in graphs naturally extends to flows in oriented matroids. So, the colour-flow duality gives a generalization of Hadwiger's conjecture about graph colourings, to a conjecture about coflows of oriented matroids. The first non-trivial case of Hadwiger's conjecture for oriented matroids reads as follows. If O is an M ( K 4 ) -minor free oriented matroid, then O has a nowhere-zero 3-coflow, i.e., it is 3-colourable in the sense of Hochstättler-Nešetřil. The class of generalized series parallel (GSP) oriented matroids is a class of 3-colourable oriented matroids with no M ( K 4 ) -minor. So far, the only technique towards proving that all orientations of a class C of M ( K 4 ) -minor free matroids are GSP (and thus 3-colourable), has been to show that every matroid in C has a positive coline. Towards proving Hadwiger's conjecture for the class of gammoids, Goddyn, Hochstättler, and Neudauer conjectured that every gammoid has a positive coline. In this work we disprove this conjecture by showing that there are infinitely many strict gammoids that do not have positive colines. We conclude by proposing a simpler technique for showing that certain oriented matroids are GSP. In particular, we recover that oriented lattice path matroids are GSP, and we show that oriented cobicircular matroids are GSP.

Interdiction of minimum spanning trees and other matroid bases

Abstract:In the minimum spanning tree (MST) interdiction problem, we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$ with edge weights, and want to find some $X\subseteq E$ satisfying a knapsack constraint such that the MST weight in $(V,E\setminus X)$ is maximized. Since MSTs of $G$ are the minimum weight bases in the graphic matroid of $G$, this problem is a special case of matroid interdiction on a matroid $M=(E,\mathcal{I})$, in which the objective is instead to maximize the minimum weight of a basis of $M$ which is disjoint from $X$. By reduction from 0-1 knapsack, matroid interdiction is NP-complete, even for uniform matroids. We develop a new exact algorithm to solve the matroid interdiction problem. One of the key components of our algorithm is a dynamic programming upper bound which only requires that a simpler discrete derivative problem can be calculated/approximated for the given matroid. Our exact algorithm then uses this bound within a custom branch-and-bound algorithm. For different matroids, we show how this discrete derivative can be calculated/approximated. In particular, for partition matroids, this yields a pseudopolynomial time algorithm. For graphic matroids, an approximation can be obtained by solving a sequence of minimum cut problems, which we apply to the MST interdiction problem. The running time of our algorithm is asymptotically faster than the best known MST interdiction algorithm, up to polylog factors. Furthermore, our algorithm achieves state-of-the-art computational performance: we solved all available instances from the literature, and in many cases reduced the best running time from hours to seconds.

The complexity of the greedoid Tutte polynomial

Abstract:We consider the Tutte polynomial of three classes of greedoids: those arising from rooted graphs, rooted digraphs and binary matrices. We establish the computational complexity of evaluating each of these polynomials at each fixed rational point (x,y). In each case we show that evaluation is #P-hard except for a small number of exceptional cases when there is a polynomial time algorithm. In the binary case, establishing #P-hardness along one line relies on Vertigan's unpublished result on the complexity of counting bases of a matroid. For completeness, we include an appendix providing a proof if this result.

The decomposition is based on [math]-sums and a new operation called star composition, while the building blocks are graphic matroids and nongraphic matroids which become graphic upon the deletion of any cocircuit. This result generalizes previous results for binary signed-graphic matroids and graphic matroids, and it provides the theoretical basis for a recognition algorithm.

Abstract:We give a new decomposition theorem in unit disk graphs (UDGs) and demonstrate its applicability in the fields of Structural Graph Theory and Parameterized Complexity. First, our new decomposition theorem shows that the class of UDGs admits an “almost” Contraction Decomposition Theorem. Prior studies on this topic exhibited that the classes of planar graphs [Klein, SICOMP, 2008], graphs of bounded genus [Demaine, Hajiaghayi and Mohar, Combinatorica 2010] and H -minor free graphs [Demaine, Hajiaghayi and Kawarabayashi, STOC 2011] admit a Contraction Decomposition Theorem. Even bounded-degree UDGs can contain arbitrarily large cliques as minors, therefore our result is a significant advance in the study of contraction decompositions. Additionally, this result answers an open question posed by Hajiaghayi ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bq2gy1N01w ) regarding the existence of contraction decompositions for classes of graphs beyond H -minor free graphs though under a relaxation of the original formulation. Second, we present a “parameteric version” of our new decomposition theorem. We prove that there is an algorithm that given a UDG G and a positive integer k , runs in polynomial time and outputs a collection of $\mathcal {O}(k) $ tree decompositions of G with the following properties. Each bag in any of these tree decompositions can be partitioned into $\mathcal {O}(k) $ connected pieces (we call this measure the chunkiness of the tree decomposition). Moreover, for any subset S of at most k edges in G , there is a tree decomposition in the collection such that S is well preserved in the decomposition in the following sense. For any bag in the tree decomposition and any edge in S with both endpoints in the bag, either its endpoints lie in different pieces or they lie in a piece which is a clique. Having this decomposition at hand, we show that the design of parameterized algorithms for some cut problems becomes elementary. In particular, our algorithmic applications include single-exponential (or slightly super-exponential) algorithms for well-studied problems such as Min Bisection , Steiner Cut , s - Way Cut , and Edge Multiway Cut-Uncut on UDGs; these algorithms are substantially faster than the best known algorithms for these problems on general graphs.

Faster algorithms on linear delta-matroids

Abstract:We show new algorithms and constructions over linear delta-matroids. We observe an alternative representation for linear delta-matroids, as a contraction representation over a skew-symmetric matrix. This is equivalent to the more standard "twist representation" up to $O(n^\omega)$-time transformations, but is much more convenient for algorithmic tasks. For instance, the problem of finding a max-weight feasible set now reduces directly to the problem of finding a max-weight basis in a linear matroid. Supported by this representation, we provide new algorithms and constructions over linear delta-matroids. We show that the union and delta-sum of linear delta-matroids define linear delta-matroids, and a representation for the resulting delta-matroid can be constructed in randomized time $O(n^\omega)$. Previously, it was only known that these operations define delta-matroids. We also note that every projected linear delta-matroid can be represented as an elementary projection. This implies that several optimization problems over (projected) linear delta-matroids, including the coverage, delta-coverage, and parity problems, reduce (in their decision versions) to a single $O(n^{\omega})$-time matrix rank computation. Using the methods of Harvey, previously used by Cheung, Lao and Leung for linear matroid parity, we furthermore show how to solve the search versions in the same time. This improves on the $O(n^4)$-time augmenting path algorithm of Geelen, Iwata and Murota. Finally, we consider the maximum-cardinality delta-matroid intersection problem. Using Storjohann's algorithms for symbolic determinants, we show that such a solution can be found in $O(n^{\omega+1})$ time. This is the first polynomial-time algorithm for the problem, solving an open question of Kakimura and Takamatsu.

Domination Polynomials of the Grid, the Cylinder, the Torus, and the King Graph

Abstract:We present an algorithm to compute the domination polynomial of the $m \times n$ grid, cylinder, and torus graphs and the king graph. The time complexity of the algorithm is $O(m^2n^2 \lambda^{2m})$ for the torus and $O(m^3n^2\lambda^m)$ for the other graphs, where $\lambda = 1+\sqrt{2}$. The space complexity is $O(mn\lambda^m)$ for all of these graphs. We use this algorithm to compute domination polynomials for graphs up to size $24\times 24$ and the total number of dominating sets for even larger graphs. This allows us to give precise estimates of the asymptotic growth rates of the number of dominating sets. We also extend several sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

An activities expansion of the transition polynomial of a multimatroid

Abstract:The weighted transition polynomial of a multimatroid is a generalization of the Tutte polynomial. By defining the activity of a skew class with respect to a basis in a multimatroid, we obtain an activities expansion for the weighted transition polynomial. We also decompose the set of all transversals of a multimatroid as a union of subsets of transversals. Each term in the decomposition has the structure of a boolean lattice, and each transversal belongs to a number of terms depending only on the sizes of some of its skew classes. Further expressions for the transition polynomial of a multimatroid are obtained via an equivalence relation on its bases and by extending Kochol's theory of compatible sets. We apply our multimatroid results to obtain a result of Morse about the transition polynomial of a delta-matroid and get a partition of the boolean lattice of subsets of elements of a delta-matroid determined by the feasible sets. Finally, we describe how multimatroids arise from graphs embedded in surfaces and apply our results to obtain an activities expansion for the topological transition polynomial. Our work extends results for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.

Abstract:We provide a combinatorial way of computing Speyer's $g$-polynomial on arbitrary Schubert matroids via the enumeration of certain Delannoy paths. We define a new statistic of a basis in a matroid, and express the $g$-polynomial of a Schubert matroid in terms of it and internal and external activities. Some surprising positivity properties of the $g$-polynomial of Schubert matroids are deduced from our expression. Finally, we combine our formulas with a fundamental result of Derksen and Fink to provide an algorithm for computing the $g$-polynomial of an arbitrary matroid.

Abstract:It is a notorious open question whether integer programs (IPs), with an integer coefficient matrix $M$ whose subdeterminants are all bounded by a constant $\Delta$ in absolute value, can be solved in polynomial time. We answer this question in the affirmative if we further require that, by removing a constant number of rows and columns from $M$, one obtains a submatrix $A$ that is the transpose of a network matrix. Our approach focuses on the case where $A$ arises from $M$ after removing $k$ rows only, where $k$ is a constant. We achieve our result in two main steps, the first related to the theory of IPs and the second related to graph minor theory. First, we derive a strong proximity result for the case where $A$ is a general totally unimodular matrix: Given an optimal solution of the linear programming relaxation, an optimal solution to the IP can be obtained by finding a constant number of augmentations by circuits of $[A\; I]$. Second, for the case where $A$ is transpose of a network matrix, we reformulate the problem as a maximum constrained integer potential problem on a graph $G$. We observe that if $G$ is $2$-connected, then it has no rooted $K_{2,t}$-minor for $t = \Omega(k \Delta)$. We leverage this to obtain a tree-decomposition of $G$ into highly structured graphs for which we can solve the problem locally. This allows us to solve the global problem via dynamic programming.

Geometric graphs with exponential chromatic number and arbitrary girth

Abstract:In 1975 Erdős initiated the study of the following very natural question. What can be said about the chromatic number of unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that have large girth? Over the years this question and its natural extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$ attracted considerable attention with the high-dimensional variant reiterated recently by Alon and Kupavskii. We prove that there exist unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with chromatic number at least $(1.074 + o(1))^d$ that have arbitrarily large girth. This improves upon a series of results due to Kupavskii; Sagdeev; and Sagdeev and Raigorodskii and gives the first bound in which the base of the exponent does not tend to one with the girth. In addition, our construction can be made explicit which allows us to answer in a strong form a question of Kupavskii. Our arguments show graphs of large chromatic number and high girth exist in a number of other geometric settings including diameter graphs and orthogonality graphs.

Abstract:To compute the hyperbolicity constant is an almost intractable problem, thus it is natural to try to bound it in terms of some parameters of the graph. Let $\mathcal{G}(g,c,n)$ be the set of graphs $G$ with girth $g(G)=g$, circumference $c(G)=c$, and $n$ vertices; and let $\mathcal{H}(g,c,m)$ be the set of graphs with girth $g$, circumference $c$, and $m$ edges. In this work, we study the four following extremal problems on graphs: $A(g,c,n)=\min\{\delta(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{G}(g,c,n) \}$, $B(g,c,n)=\max\{\delta(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{G}(g,c,n) \}$, $\alpha(g,c,m)=\min\{\delta(G)\,|\; \in \mathcal{H}(g,c,m) \}$ and $\beta(g,c,m)=\max\{\delta(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{H}(g,c,m) \}$. In particular, we obtain bounds for $A(g,c,n)$ and $\alpha(g,c,m)$, and we compute the precise value of $B(g,c,n)$ and $\beta(g,c,m)$ for all values of $g$, $c$, $n$ and $m$.
