Abstract:Metal organic coordination polymers (MOCPs) provide an intriguing platform to design functional thermoelectric materials through modifying metal atoms, organic ligands, etc. Based on density functional theory (DFT) coupled with Boltzmann transport theory, the thermoelectric properties of several MOCPs, which is designed by intercalating organic linkers ranging from benzene to pentacene between two inorganic units, have been investigated. We found that the interplay of d orbital of Ni atom and π orbitals of the organic linkers play an important role in band engineering and then thermoelectric efficiency. Combining the high conductivity for π orbitals of organic ligands and high Seebeck coefficient of the d orbital of Ni atom, such intercalated MOCPs provide new way to design high performance thermoelectric materials. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Chemical bond hierarchy (CBH) depicts a unique structural type of solids, in which fractions of the materials are loosely bonded in a relatively rigid framework. The weak bonding in materials with CBH induces special atomic vibrational motions and has a significant influence on the thermoelectric transport properties. The architecture of compounds with CBH was first proposed by Slack in his ‘phonon glass electron crystal’ paradigm and has led to the discovery of numerous new thermoelectric compounds over the years. This review covers various types of thermoelectric materials with different levels of CBH, focusing on their lattice thermal conductivities (κLs). Caged compounds, with foreign impurities in the cages as the rattlers, are the first type of compounds stimulating the study of CBH. The fillers in both the clathrates and the filled skutterudites greatly reduce the κL accompanied by abnormal temperature dependence. As reviewed herein, the reduced κL is attributed to different mechanistic sources, i.e., the resonant scattering or the enhanced anharmonic phonon scatterings. Both may contribute to the κL reductions. In recent years, more materials with different types of CBH have been discovered, some containing complex atomic clusters as the rattlers, and others having flowing atoms that cause multiple equilibrium sites and even liquid-like behaviors. All CBHs strongly interfere with the heat transport of the corresponding materials. Future perspectives and possible research directions for thermal transport in thermoelectric materials with CBH have also been summarized herein.

Abstract:We investigate the thermoelectric-transport properties of metal/graphene/metal hetero-structure. We use a single band tight-binding model to present the two-dimensional electronic band structure of graphene. Using the Landauer-Butticker formula and taking the coupling between graphene and the two electrodes into account, we can calculate the thermoelectric potential and current versus temperature. It is found that in spite of metal electrodes, the carrier type of graphene determines the electron motion direction driven by the difference in temperature between the two electrodes, while for n type graphene, the electrons move along the thermal gradient, and for p type graphene, the electrons move against the thermal gradient.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted much attention due to their novel properties. An exciting new class of 2D materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has recently emerged, displaying high electrical conductivity, a rarity among organic nanoporous materials. The emergence of these materials raises intriguing questions about their fundamental electronic, optical, and thermal properties, but few studies exist in this regard. Here we present an atomistic study of the thermoelectric properties of crystalline 2D MOFs X3(HITP)2 with X = Ni, Pd or Pt, and HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene, using both ab initio transport models and classical molecular dynamics simulations. We find that these materials have a high Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity, making them promising for thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, we explore the dependence of thermoelectric transport properties on the atomic structure by comparing the calculated band structure, band alignment, and electronic density of states of the three 2D MOFs, and find that the thermoelectric transport properties strongly depend on both the interaction between the ligands and the metal ions, and the d orbital splitting of the metal ions induced by the ligands. This demonstrates that selection of the metal ion is a powerful approach to control and enhance the thermoelectric properties. Interestingly we reveal an unexpected effect where, unlike for electrons, the thermal and electrical current may not be equally carried by the holes, leading to a significant deviation from the Wiedemann-Franz law. The results of this work provide fundamental guidance to optimize the existing 2D MOFs, and to design and discover new families of MOF-like materials for thermoelectric applications.
Polymer morphology and interfacial charge transfer dominate over energy-dependent scattering in organic-inorganic thermoelectrics

Abstract:Hybrid (organic-inorganic) materials have emerged as a promising class of thermoelectric materials, achieving power factors exceeding those of either constituent. The mechanism of this enhancement is still under debate, and pinpointing the underlying physics has proven difficult. In this work, we combine transport measurements with theoretical simulations and first principles calculations on a prototypical PEDOT:PSS-Te(Cux) nanowire hybrid material system to understand the effect of templating and charge redistribution on the thermoelectric performance. Further, we apply the recently developed Kang-Snyder charge transport model to show that scattering of holes in the hybrid system, defined by the energy-dependent scattering parameter, remains the same as in the host polymer matrix; performance is instead dictated by polymer morphology manifested in an energy-independent transport coefficient. We build upon this language to explain thermoelectric behavior in a variety of PEDOT and P3HT based hybrids acting as a guide for future work in multiphase materials.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic materials have been considered as a new candidate in the field of thermoelectric materials since the last decade owing to their great potential to enhance the thermoelectric performance by utilizing the low thermal conductivity of organic materials and the high Seebeck coefficient, and high electrical conductivity of inorganic materials. Herein, we provide an overview of interfacial engineering in the synthesis of various organic-inorganic thermoelectric hybrid materials, along with the dimensional design for tuning their thermoelectric properties. Interfacial effects are examined in terms of nanostructures, physical properties, and chemical doping between the inorganic and organic components. Several key factors which dictate the thermoelectric efficiency and performance of various electronic devices are also discussed, such as the thermal conductivity, electric transportation, electronic band structures, and band convergence of the hybrid materials.

Abstract:Both thermodynamic stability and high thermoelectric figure of merit are required for organic thermoelectric materials for practical application. However, it is extremely time-consuming to design advanced organic thermoelectric materials via conventional theoretical calculation. In this work, combining first-principles calculations, machine learning fitted potential and solving phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we propose a new group of two-dimensional covalent organic frame semiconductors 2AL-PR-X (X = 2H, Ni, Pt, Zn) as promising organic thermoelectric materials. We found that the embedding metal atoms in the center can enhance remarkably the stability of porphyrin ring, demonstrated by evaluating the system total energy and phonon dispersion relationship. Moreover, the interaction between the metal atoms and the porphyrin ring will affect the phonon modes in the porphyrin ring, result in reduction in thermal conductivity. We found that 2AL-PR-Pt is the best thermoelectric candidate material among the studied 2AL-PR-X, which has a peak ZT of 0.32 at room temperature and can reach around 0.9 at 800 K. Our work provides strategy for the thermal transport regulation of two-dimensional covalent organic frame materials and demonstrates the large potential of 2AL-PR-X materials for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:Superior long-range electric transport has been observed in several organometallic wires. Here, we discuss the role of the metal center in the electric transport and examine the possibility of high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) by controlling the quantum resonance effects. We examined a few metal center (and metal-free) terpyridine-based complexes by first-principles calculations and clarified the role of the metals in determining the transport properties. Quasi-resonant tunneling is mediated by organic compounds, and narrow overlapping resonance states are formed when d-electron metal centers are incorporated. Distinct length (L) and temperature (T) dependencies of thermopower from semiconductor materials or organic molecular junctions are presented in terms of atomistic calculations of ZT with and without considering the phonon thermal conductance. We present an alternative approach to obtain high ZT for molecular junctions by quantum effect.

Abstract:AB 2 Sb 2 -type Zintl phases, especially Mg 3 Sb 2 , have garnered widespread attention in virtue of their nontoxic constituent elements and outstanding thermoelectric performance in n-type materials. However, the p-type counterpart of AB 2 Sb 2 still struggles with a low figure of merit zT , primarily because of the limited valence band degeneracy, large band effective mass, and relatively high thermal conductivity. Here we simultaneously optimize the electrical and thermal transports of p-type AB 2 Sb 2 -based materials through shaping the band edge and distorting the crystal lattice. By alloying Zn at Mg2 site and Ca at Mg1 site, we successfully decorate the crystal lattice of Mg 3 Sb 2 in real space and thereby modify the band structure in reciprocal space. Zn alloying promotes the band degeneracy while Ca alloying reduce the single band effective mass, which largely promotes the transport of charge carriers. Moreover, the distorted crystal lattice effectively blocks the heat-carry phonons to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity κ L . A high zT of 0.81 is finally realized at 750 K in our Zn/Ca co-alloyed samples, which is three times larger than that of Mg 3 Sb 2 matrix. Our work opens new possibilities for the synthetic optimization of both electrical and thermal transports in Zintl phase and other thermoelectric systems.

Abstract:The understanding of thermoelectric transport in hybrid perovskites is advanced by creating an atomistic picture consisting of lattice and charge dynamics. The low lattice thermal conductivity is critical to their decent figure of merit, and the complex interactions between PbI3− and cations lead to the coupled motions of inorganic framework and cations, resulting in their strong anharmonicity. Due to their tantalizing prospect of heat‐electricity interconversion, hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites have sparked considerable research interests recently. Nevertheless, understanding their complex interplay between the macroscopic properties, nonintuitive transport processes, and basic chemical structures still remains far from completion, although it plays a fundamental role in systematic materials development. On the basis of multiscale first‐principles calculations, this understanding is herein advanced by establishing a comprehensive picture consisting of atomic and charge dynamics. It is unveiled that the ultralow room‐temperature lattice thermal conductivity (≈0.20 W m−1 K−1) of hybrid perovskites is critical to their decent thermoelectric figure of merit (≈0.34), and such phonon‐glass behavior stems from not only the inherent softness but also the strong anharmonicity. It is identified that the 3D electrostatic interaction and hydrogen‐bonded networks between the PbI3− cage and embedded cations result in the strongly coupled motions of inorganic framework and cation, giving rise to their high degree of anharmonicity. Furthermore, such coupled motions bring about low‐frequency optical vibrational modes, which leads to the dominant role of electron scattering with optical phonons in charge transport. It is expected that these new atomistic‐level insights offer a standing point where the performance of thermoelectric perovskites can be further enhanced.

Abstract:Electrically conductive two‐dimensional (2D) metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as good candidates for thermoelectric applications owing to their high electrical and low thermal conductivities. This work studies the microscopic origin of the thermoelectric properties of copper benzenehexathiol (Cu‐BHT), a highly electrically conductive 2D MOF. 2D MOFs usually have polycrystalline domains because of the bottom‐up synthesis, and the polycrystallinity makes it challenging to understand the intrinsic properties of 2D MOFs. We fabricate mesoscopic‐scale devices to measure the thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient of Cu‐BHT by exfoliating the synthesized Cu‐BHT samples into thin films of thickness ranging from 30 nm to 400 nm. We verify that the low thermal conductivity of Cu‐BHT originates from the unique intrinsic structure of 2D MOFs, while our data indicates that the electrical conductivity is largely controlled by the polycrystallinity. The Seebeck effect measurement reveals the presence of robust electronic bands arising from definite crystallinity, which differentiates 2D MOFs from conductive polymers. This work points to opportunities in optimizing the thermoelectric figure of merit of 2D MOFs through the appropriate combination of metal ions and organic ligands.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Organic semiconductors are attracting increasing interest as flexible thermoelectric materials owing to material abundance, easy processing and low thermal conductivity. Although progress in p-type polymers and composites has been reported, their n-type counterpart has fallen behind owing to diffculties in n-type doping of organic semiconductors. Here, we present an approach to synthesize n-type flexible thermoelectric materials through a facile electrochemical intercalation method, fabricating a hybrid superlattice of alternating inorganic TiS2 monolayers and organic cations. Electrons were externally injected into the inorganic layers and then stabilized by organic cations, providing n-type carriers for current and energy transport. An electrical conductivity of 790 S cm(-1) and a power factor of 0.45 mW m(-1) K-2 were obtained for a hybrid superlattice of TiS2/[(hexylammonium)(x)(H2O)(y)(DMSO)(z)], with an in-plane lattice thermal conductivity of 0.12 +/- 0.03 W m(-1) K-1, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the thermal conductivities of the single-layer and bulk TiS2. High power factor and low thermal conductivity contributed to a thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, of 0.28 at 373 K, which might find application in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Thermoelectric energy converters can directly convert heat to electricity using semiconducting materials via the Seebeck effect and electricity to heat via the Peltier effect. Their efficiency depends on the dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit of the material, which is defined as zT = S-2 sigma T/kappa with S, sigma, kappa, and T being the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and absolute temperature respectively. Organic materials for thermoelectric applications have attracted great attention. In this review, we present our recent progress made in developing theories and computational schemes to predict the thermoelectric figure of merit at the first-principles level. The methods have been applied to model thermoelectric transport in closely-packed molecular crystals and one-dimensional conducting polymer chains. The physical insight gained in these studies will help in the design of efficient organic thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Thermoelectrics that enable direct heat–electricity conversion possess unique advantages for green and renewable energy revolution and have received rapidly growing attention in the past decade. Among various thermoelectric materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with intrinsic high porosity and tunable physical/chemical properties are emerging as a promising class of materials that have been demonstrated to exhibit many unique merits for thermoelectric applications. Their structural topologies and thermoelectric properties can be facilely regulated by precisely selecting and arranging metal centers and organic ligands. Besides, a large variety of guest molecules can be incorporated within their pores, giving rise to novel avenues of raising energy-conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent advances in designing conductive MOFs and MOF-based composites for thermoelectric applications. It first introduces the fundamental thermoelectric parameters and the underlying regulation mechanisms specifically effective for MOFs, then summarizes the related studies conducted in recent years, where the structural design strategies of tuning thermoelectric properties are demonstrated and discussed. In the final part, conclusions and perspectives with the envision of an outlook for this promising area are presented.

Abstract:Defects engineering is an effective approach to improve thermoelectric performance of thermoelectric materials. In this work, a simple strategy has been developed to introduce large scale defects of Se2- enrichment in the Te2--based anionic framework of AgCuTe-based thermoelectric materials. As a consequence, the structure of anionic Se2-/Te2--based framework is modified and its electrical transport properties are largely affected. It is observed that the carrier concentration is reduced because the Se2- enrichment hinders the formation of cation vacancies, leading to the decreasing of electric conductivity and the increasing of Seebeck coefficient in high temperature range. Significantly, the electron thermal conductivity decreases to an extremely low level due to the further reduction in carrier concentration. As a result, the Se-rich AgCuTe sample achieves a maximum ZT value of 1.2 at 723 K, which is about 20% higher than that of the pristine AgCuTe sample. The results evidence that optimizing the anionic framework is an effective approach to improve the thermoelectric properties of AgCuTe and is expected to be a universal modification strategy to enhance the thermoelectric performance of other Ag/Cu-based superionic conductor materials.

Abstract:The development of high efficiency thermoelectric materials would revolutionize energy harvesting capabilities and be useful for a large number of applications. Hybrid organic–inorganic nanostructured materials are an intriguing platform for developing efficient thermoelectric systems due to the possibility of independently controlling the thermal and electrical conductivity of the material with intelligent choices for material components. In this study we control the thermopower of hybrid 2-dimensional (2D) nanoparticle–molecule superlattices by systematically modifying molecular properties. Five conjugated, ladder-type, heteroacene molecules are used to interlink gold nanoparticles and control the thin films' properties. Interestingly, we measure a change in the sign of the Seebeck coefficient, corresponding to a crossover of the majority charge carrier (from hole to electron). Hall-effect measurements are used to confirm the change in dominant carrier for these systems. And density functional theory (DFT) is used in combination with Green's function-based transport calculations to examine the energy level-alignments in the system. The single–molecule Seebeck coefficient predictions from these results compare favorably with the experimental results of the molecular arrays and provide potential insights into the origins of the sign-change of the carriers in the system. In addition, the thermoelectric power factor σS2 is found to range above predicted values for hybrid systems and to deviate from optimization strategies for conventional materials. A simple strategy to further increase σS2 is highlighted. Limitations of the model and sources of variability in the experimental results are discussed. Our findings develop a stronger understanding of charge transport in molecule–nanoparticle hybrid films; demonstrate that these hybrid materials allow facile control over both the carrier type and the power factor of the material, both of which are important for maximizing the efficiency of functional thermoelectric devices; and establish a framework for continuing to maximize the thermoelectric efficiency of these materials.

Abstract:In the area of energy storage and conversion, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are receiving more and more attention. They combine organic nature with long-range order and low thermal conductivity, giving them qualities to be potentially attractive for thermoelectric applications. To make the framework electrically conductive so far, thermoelectricity in this class of materials requires infiltration by outside conductive guest molecules. In this study, an in-situ polymerization of conductive polyaniline inside the porous structure of MOF-801 was conducted to synthesize PANi@MOF-801 nanocomposites for thermoelectrical applications. The growth of polyaniline chains of different loadings inside the host MOF matrix generally enhanced bulk electrical conductivity by about 6 orders of magnitude, leading to Seebeck coefficient value of -141 μVK −1 and improved thermal stability. The unusual increase in electrical conductivity was attributed to the formation of highly oriented conductive PANi chains inside the MOF pores, besides host–guest physical interaction, while the Seebeck coefficient enhancement was because of the energy filtering effect of the developed structure. Modulating the composition of PANi@MOF-801 composites by varying the aniline: MOF-801 ratio in the synthesis bath from 2:1 and 1:1 to 1:2 leads to a change in the semiconductor properties from p-type semiconductor to n-type. Among the examined composites with n-type semiconducting properties exhibited the highest ZT value, 0.015, and lowest thermal conductivity, 0.24 Wm −1 K −1 . The synthesized composites have better performance than those recently reported for a similar category of thermoelectric materials related to MOF-based composites.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic materials have attracted intensive research interests due to the superb physical properties that take advantage of both organic and inorganic components and their promising applications in functional devices such as light emitting diodes, solar cells, and flexible thermoelectrics. Understanding thermal transport in hybrid materials is of importance for both the reliability and the performance of the hybrid material-based systems. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials can be classified as nanocomposites, superlattices and crystals depending on the strength of organic-inorganic bonding and the feature size of organic and inorganic components. Previous research on thermal transport mainly focus on hybrid nanocomposites where phonon-interface scattering dominates the thermal transport process. However, in hybrid superlattices and crystals, organic and inorganic components are blended at the atomic scale by chemical bonds without a clear interface, and the phonon transport physics is not well understood. This article reviews the recent progress in ab-initio modeling on phonon transport in hybrid crystals and superlattices. The predicted thermal conductivity of II–VI based organic-inorganic semiconductors, organometal perovskites and organic-intercalated TiS2 superlattices are reviewed and compared with experimental data when available. This review provides guidance for modeling thermal conductivity of materials with complex atomic structures from the first principles, which could be a good tutorial for both graduate students and experienced researchers who are interested in thermal energy transport in emerging hybrid materials.
