Abstract:The landscape of miniaturized wireless biomedical devices (MWBDs) is rapidly expanding as proactive mobile healthcare proliferates. MWBDs are diverse and include various injectable, ingestible, implantable, and wearable devices. While the growth of MWBDs increases the flexibility of medical services, the adoption of these technologies brings privacy and security risks for their users. MWBDs can operate with sensitive, private information and affect patients through the use of stimulation and drug delivery. Therefore, these devices require trust and need to be secure. Embedding protective mechanisms into MWBDs is challenging because they are restricted in size, power budget, as well as processing and storage capabilities. Nevertheless, MWBDs need to be at least minimally securable in the face of evolving threats. The main intent of this work is to make the primary stakeholders of MWBDs aware of associated risks and to help the architects and the manufacturers of MWBDs protect their emerging designs in a repeatable and structured manner. Making MWBDs securable begins with performing threat modeling. This paper introduces a domain-specific qualitative-quantitative threat model dedicated to MWBDs. The proposed model is then applied to representative case studies from each category of MWBDs.

Abstract:The new culture of networked systems that offer everywhere accessible services has given rise to various types of security tradeoffs. In fact, with the evolution of physical systems that keep getting integrated with cyber frameworks, cyber threats have far more critical effects as they get reflected on the physical environment. As a result, the issue of security of cyber physical systems requires a special holistic treatment. In this paper, we study the tradeoff between security, safety, and availability in such systems and demonstrate these concepts on implantable medical devices as a case study. We discuss the challenges and constraints associated with securing such systems and focus on the tradeoff between security measures required for blocking unauthorized access to the device and the safety of the patient in emergency situations where such measures must be dropped to allow access. We analyze the up to date proposed solutions and discuss their strengths and limitations.

Emerging Security Mechanisms for Medical Cyber Physical Systems

Abstract:The following decade will witness a surge in remote health-monitoring systems that are based on body-worn monitoring devices. These Medical Cyber Physical Systems (MCPS) will be capable of transmitting the acquired data to a private or public cloud for storage and processing. Machine learning algorithms running in the cloud and processing this data can provide decision support to healthcare professionals. There is no doubt that the security and privacy of the medical data is one of the most important concerns in designing an MCPS. In this paper, we depict the general architecture of an MCPS consisting of four layers: data acquisition, data aggregation, cloud processing, and action. Due to the differences in hardware and communication capabilities of each layer, different encryption schemes must be used to guarantee data privacy within that layer. We survey conventional and emerging encryption schemes based on their ability to provide secure storage, data sharing, and secure computation. Our detailed experimental evaluation of each scheme shows that while the emerging encryption schemes enable exciting new features such as secure sharing and secure computation, they introduce several orders-of-magnitude computational and storage overhead. We conclude our paper by outlining future research directions to improve the usability of the emerging encryption schemes in an MCPS.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a boom of connected medical devices, which brings security issues in the meantime. Medical imaging devices, an essential part of medical cyber-physical systems, play a vital role in modern hospitals and are often life-critical. However, security and privacy issues in these medical cyber-physical systems are sometimes ignored. We perform an empirical study on imaging devices to analyse the security of medical cyber-physical systems. To be precise, we design a threat model and propose prospective attack techniques for medical imaging devices. To tackle potential cyber threats, we introduce protection mechanisms, evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of protection mechanisms as well as its interplay with attack techniques. To scoring security, we design a hierarchical system that provides actionable suggestions for imaging devices in different scenarios. We investigate 15 devices from 9 manufacturers to demonstrate empirical comprehension and real-world security issues.

Abstract:The rapid evolutions in micro-computing, mini-hardware manufacturing, and machine to machine (M2M) communications have enabled novel Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to reshape many networking applications. Healthcare systems are among these applications that have been revolutionized with IoT, introducing an IoT branch known as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) systems. IoMT systems allow remote monitoring of patients with chronic diseases. Thus, it can provide timely patients' diagnostic that can save their life in case of emergencies. However, security in these critical systems is a major challenge facing their wide utilization. In this paper, we present state-of-the-art techniques to secure IoMT systems' data during collection, transmission, and storage. We comprehensively overview IoMT systems' potential attacks, including physical and network attacks. Our findings reveal that most security techniques do not consider various types of attacks. Hence, we propose a security framework that combines several security techniques. The framework covers IoMT security requirements and can mitigate most of its known attacks.

Abstract:Implantable Medical Devices (IMD) is a fast pace growing medical field and continues to grow in the foreseeable future. Advancement in science and technology has led to the IMD devices offering advanced medical treatments. Modern IMDs can automatically monitor and manage different patients’ health conditions without any manual intervention from medical professionals. While IMDs are also becoming more connected to enhance the delivery of care remotely and provide the means for both patients and physicians to adjust therapy at the comfort of their homes, it also increases security-related concerns. Adversaries could take advantage and exploit device vulnerabilities to manipulate device settings remotely from any-where around the world. This manuscript reviews the current threats, security goals, and proposed solutions by comparing them with their strengths and limitations. We also highlight the emerging IMD technologies and innovative ideas for new designs and implementations to improve the security of IMDs. Finally, we conclude the article with future research directions toward securing IMD systems to light the way for researchers.

Abstract:The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has become a strategic priority for future e-healthcare because of its ability to improve patient care and its scope of providing more reliable clinical data, increasing efficiency, and reducing costs. It is no wonder that many healthcare institutions nowadays like to harness the benefits offered by the IoMT. In fact, it is an infrastructure with connected medical devices, software applications, and care systems and services. However, the accelerated adoption of connected devices also has a serious side effect: it obscures the broader need to meet the requirements of standard security for modern converged environments (even beyond connected medical devices). Adding up different types and numbers of devices risks creating significant security vulnerabilities. In this paper, we have undertaken a study of various security techniques dedicated to this environment during recent years. This study enables us to classify these techniques and to characterize them in order to benefit from their positive aspects.

Abstract:The Internet has become the primary vehicle for doing almost everything online, and smartphones are needed for almost everyone to live their daily lives. As a result, cybersecurity is a top priority in today’s world. As Internet usage has grown exponentially with billions of users and the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, cybersecurity has become a cat-and-mouse game between attackers and defenders. Cyberattacks on systems are commonplace, and defense mechanisms are continually updated to prevent them. Based on a literature review of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, attacks, and preventive measures, we find that cybersecurity problems are rooted in computer system architectures, operating systems, network protocols, design options, heterogeneity, complexity, evolution, open systems, open-source software vulnerabilities, user convenience, ease of Internet access, global users, advertisements, business needs, and the global market. We investigate common cybersecurity vulnerabilities and find that the bare machine computing (BMC) paradigm is a possible solution to address and eliminate their root causes at many levels. We study 22 common cyberattacks, identify their root causes, and investigate preventive mechanisms currently used to address them. We compare conventional and bare machine characteristics and evaluate the BMC paradigm and its applications with respect to these attacks. Our study finds that BMC applications are resilient to most cyberattacks, except for a few physical attacks. We also find that BMC applications have inherent security at all computer and information system levels. Further research is needed to validate the security strengths of BMC systems and applications.

Abstract:Protecting embedded security is becoming an increasingly challenging research problem for embedded systems due to a number of emerging trends in hardware, software, networks, and applications. Without fundamental advances in, and an understanding of embedded security it will be difficult for future engineers to provide assurance for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Operational Technology (OT) in wide ranging applications, from home automation and autonomous transportation to medical devices and factory floors. Common to such applications are cyberphysical risks and consequences stemming from a lack of embedded security. The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) held a one-day visioning workshop to explore these issues. The workshop focused on five major application areas of embedded systems, namely (1) medical/wearable devices, (2) autonomous systems (drones, vehicles, robots), (3) smart homes, (4) industry and supply chain, and (5) critical infrastructure. This report synthesizes the results of that workshop and develops a list of strategic goals for research and education over the next 5-10 years. Embedded security in connected devices presents challenges that require a broad look at the overall systems design, including human and societal dimensions as well as technical. Particular issues related to embedded security are a subset of the overall security of the application areas, which must also balance other design criteria such as cost, power, reliability, usability and function. Recent trends are converging to make the security of embedded systems an increasingly important and difficult objective, requiring new trans-disciplinary approaches to solve problems on a 5-10 year horizon.

Abstract:Science and engineering disciplines are provoking fundamental and applied discoveries in numerous applications, such as to deeply understand brain functions, precisely diagnose diseases, and to then properly address these. The later advances call upon biomedical integrated circuits and systems (BioCAS) to provide needed research tools. In fact, with the increase of the personalized healthcare market and BioCAS featuring wearability, implantability and intelligence, it has become significantly more important to address these emerging trends. These circuits and systems deal with various signals and images such as electrophysiological, electrochemical, optical, and magnetic, which require various front-end circuits to acquire signals and usually cancel out the noise. With the booming artificial intelligence methods, these biosignals became mandatory for the monitoring, detection, diagnosis and even prediction of diseases for example. This monograph focusses on the current research activities and emerging trends that relate to the above-mentioned functionalities, and it should be of interest to students, researchers and engineers active in the fields related to Circuits and Systems for Biomedical Engineering. Section I is a summary of the main BioCAS research interests, and in Section II various biosignal acquisition circuits techniques are discussed. In Section III the authors cover circuits for biosignal processing, with emphasis on the newly emerging artificial intelligence. Sections IV and V contain a review of wireless power harvesting and communication circuits. Sections VI and VII represent circuits that help miniaturizing biomedical imaging systems, and other systems intended for the detection of chemical and molecular assays. Section VIII describes one of the main neural prostheses intended to address vision disorders, whilst the last section reviews electrode-tissue interfaces that essentially bridge the circuits and systems with the human body.

However, these systems are complex in software and hardware, and optimizing between security, privacy, and treatment is crucial for healthcare systems as any security or privacy violation can lead to severe effects on patients' treatments and overall health conditions. Indeed, the healthcare domain is increasingly facing security challenges and threats due to numerous design flaws and the lack of proper security measures in healthcare devices and applications. In this paper, we explore various security and privacy threats to healthcare systems and discuss the consequences of these threats. Abstract:In this editor's column, I would like to advocate for putting more research effort in the security of electronic systems that are based on emerging hardware technologies. The reason for existence of these emerging technologies is that they are more efficient than traditional semiconductor technologies with respect to one or more nonfunctional properties, such as the energy consumption, the peak power dissipation, the computational delay, the cost and/or the size of the chip. The requirements of a system determine which of these properties are the most important for that system and whether it is necessary to step away from traditional technologies. For example, a pacemaker chip should consume as little energy as possible because the battery should last as long as possible, while a disposable medical sensor should be as cheap as possible because it cannot be reused. When traditional semiconductor technologies cannot fulfill these requirements, emerging technologies can offer a solution.

Abstract:The advent of the fourth industrial revolution along with developments in other emerging technologies, such as Internet of Things, big data, artificial intelligence as well as cloud and quantum computing, smart healthcare systems (SHS) are becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives. Meanwhile, patients, doctors, and other medical personnel rely on the safe and efficient storage, transmission, and analysis of medical images and electronic health records for successful diagnosis, treatment, and management of different ailments. Moreover since, for various reasons, medical images are always the target of different illicit criminal activities, studies to utilise advanced information technologies to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of such data have become a major priority in all SHS platforms. Our study evaluates recent efforts to deploy emerging technologies to design, secure, and enhance the efficiency of SHS that are based on medical images. It is hoped that this work will stimulate further interest aimed at the pursuit of more advanced algorithms and frameworks covering all aspects of security and privacy in emerging and future smart healthcare applications.

Abstract:<p>Internet of medical things (IoMT) is an emerging technology aiming to improve the patient's quality of life by enabling personalized e‐health services without limitations on time and location. Nevertheless, IoMT devices (eg, medical sensors) that constitute the key underlying elements of the IoMT edge network are vulnerable to various types of security threats and thus, they pose a significant risk to patient's privacy and safety. Based on that and the fact that the security is a critical factor for the successful integration of IoMT technology into pervasive healthcare systems, there is an urgent need for novel security mechanisms to preserve the security of the IoMT edge network. Toward this direction, the first step is the comprehensive understanding of existing and potential threats to the IoMT edge network environment. Thus, in this article, we provide a categorization of security threats to the edge network environment based on the major security objectives that they target. Moreover, we present a categorization of security countermeasures, derived from the literature, against threats to IoMT edge networks. The authors' intent is to provide a foundation for organizing research efforts toward the development of proper security countermeasures for protecting IoMT edge networks against internal and external threats.</p>

In recent times, numerous private enterprises and governmental institutions worldwide have encountered the issue of cyber- attacks and the peril associated with wireless communication technology. The modern society heavily relies on electronic technology, and safeguarding this data from cyber-attacks poses a formidable challenge. Cyber-attacks are intended to inflict financial harm onto companies. Cyber- attacks may serve military or political objectives in certain instances. Some examples of these damages include PC infections, knowledge breaches, data distribution service (DDS), and other attack routes. For this purpose, different companies employ diverse strategies to mitigate the harm caused by cyber-attacks. Cybersecurity monitors up-to-date information on the most recent IT data. Researchers worldwide have proposed several techniques to prevent cyber-attacks or mitigate their impact. Several approaches are currently in the operational phase, while others are still in the study phase. The objective of this study is to conduct a thorough examination and evaluation of the latest advancements in the field of cyber security, with the purpose of identifying and analyzing the problems, vulnerabilities, and strengths of the proposed methodologies. A comprehensive analysis is conducted on several forms of novel descendant attacks.
