Effects of acid deposition and atmospheric pollution on forest ecosystem biomass in southern China

Abstract:Effects of acid deposition and atmospheric pollution on forest ecosystem biomass in southern China were investigated. The results showed that forest ecosystem biomass was inhibited by environmental pollution. Either Eucalyptus urophylla or Pinus massoniana, the current annual increment of tree height, diameter and volume were higher at non-pollution plots than at pollution plots. The total biomass of E. urophylla and P. massoniana stands were respectively 66.89 t·hm-2 and 77.56 t·hm-2 at pollution plots, which had the less biomass than those at non-pollution plots, only 78.89% and 94.49% respectively. Environmental pollution accelerated root growth of these two trees, but inhibited stem growth. The proportion of root biomass to total biomass of E. urophylla and P. massoniana were respectively 65.16% and 15.08% for pollution plots, while 40.50% and 14.48% for non-pollution plots. Similarly, the proportion of stem biomass to total biomass of these two forest stands were respectively 19.87% and 57.71% for pollution plots, but 38.15% and 70.33% for non-pollution plots. The results will provide the scientific bases for protecting forest ecosystem in southern China.
