Since earlier record of the species from the southwest coast was based on a single female specimen, the description of male with dimorphic characters is presented.

Abstract:Phyllognathia ceratophthalma was originally documented in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in Japan, by Balss in 1913. Subsequently, it was recorded in the Maldives within the Indian Ocean, thus broadening its known habitat range. This current study marks its first observation from the Indian coast and a sighting from the Indian Ocean after a span of 105 years, indicating its range extension to the west coast of India. A pair of spiny tiger shrimps were discovered in association with hard coral ( Porites sp.) from the lower intertidal zone of the Sikka reef, Gujarat. This study illustrates the morphology of the species and provides information about its distribution and habitat ecology.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Parhyale, Stebbing 1897 was collected from the intertidal region of Chilika Lagoon associated with the seaweed Gracilaria sp. Parhyale odian sp. nov. differs from other species of the genus by having a stout robust seta on the surface of the propodus near to dactyl hinge of male gnathopod 1. With the new description of P. odian sp. nov., the global species number in the genus rises to 16.

Abstract:The reef-associated palaemonid shrimp fauna of Indian waters, especially in island ecosystems, is one of the least studied. During explorations at Lakshadweep Islands, Cuapetes elegans (Paulson 1875), C. grandis (Stimpson 1857) and a new species, Cuapetes purushothamani sp. nov., were recorded and illustrated based on the specimens collected from dead coral and rocky shore regions of eastern lagoon of Agatti Island (0.5–1.0 m), Lakshadweep, India. The new species shows close relation with C. elegans , possessing distinctive characteristics as indicated: rostrum extends as far as antennal scale, arrangement of ventral teeth below the wide edentulous dorsal part of rostrum, long dorsal spines of telson, a fewer number of segments in antennal flagellum, fingers of first chelated leg slightly longer than palm, chela of second cheliped longer than combined length of merus and carpus with inflated palm. In addition, the partial sequences of mitochondrial genes cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), 16S and nuclear Histone 3 (H3) gene were generated and compared with other available species of Cuapetes. Abstract:The Sabellids, commonly called marine feather dusters, identified as Bispira melanostigma (Schmarda, 1861), were collected at the Vellapati, Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu. This paper provides new insight into the morphological features of this species, which was previously reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Goa coasts. This study provides the first-ever occurrence of this species on the Eastern coast of India, Bay of Bengal.

Abstract:The Zoological Survey of India, Western Regional Centre, Pune (ZSI-WRC) contains 1887 specimens of mostly unstudied marine brachyuran crabs. The present systematic study on the marine crabs of ZSI-WRC reports 62 species in 44 genera, 18 families and nine superfamilies. Of these, four genera and 13 species are new distributional records within India. We also record three species for the first time from the Indian waters: Metopograpsus cannicci Innocenti, Schubart Fratini, 2020 (Grapsidae MacLeay, 1838), Varuna yui Hwang Takeda, 1986 (Varunidae H. Milne Edwards, 1853), and Ilyograpsus paludicola (Rathbun, 1909) (Macrophthalmidae Dana, 1851). The record of Varuna yui is significant as it is the first time it has been found from the western Indian Ocean. The subfamily Ilyograpsinae tevi, 2005, has likewise not previously been reported from India. The taxonomy of the poorly known menippid crab, Sphaerozius scaber (Fabricius, 1798), is clarified with the designation of a lectotype, and its taxonomy is discussed. Sphaerozius scaber can be distinguished from the only congener S. nitidus Stimpson, 1858, by its prominently tuberculated carapace, palm and carpus of the chelipeds, and the strongly curved male first gonopod, with the distal part gently tapering into a truncate tip. Sphaerozius scaber is a new addition to the west coast of India. With the inclusion of the present new records, India is now known to have 939 species of marine brachyuran crabs in 375 genera of 63 families.

Abstract:The Japanese skeleton shrimp Caprella mutica, originally from the north-west Pacific, artificially introduced to many parts of the world, is recorded in Sweden for the first time. The new record is from Eastern Skagerrak, slightly north of the border between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. A detailed morphological description of the specimens from Swedish waters with notes on habitat is presented. In comparison with the specimens from the native range, the large males of C. mutica from Sweden, and material earlier reported from elsewhere in Europe, are characterized by rather long pereonites 1 and 2, which are longer than the combined length of pereonites 3 and 4; and long segments of antenna 1 peduncle; among them segment 3 is longer than flagellum. Abstract:Present study provides first live occurrence of a mantis shrimp Lysiosquilla tredecimdentata Holthuis, 1941 (Total length—238 mm and Total wet weight—110 g) from the intertidal sea grass bed of Haripur creek (19°15′ 45′′ N and 84°54′ 52′′ E) of Gopalpur-on-sea, Odisha coast being noticed on 21st June 2022. This study reports about the Lysiosquilla tredecimdentata range extension from Andhra Pradesh in south and West Bengal in north to Odisha coast of India. Although the creek ecosystem is not completely free from the impact of pollution stress and natural calamities such as tropical cyclone, the factors responsible for such occurrence have not been identified yet. Conversely, habitat suitability and availability of preferred food substance due to the newly formed sea grass meadow might have supported such type of stomatopod species for migrating towards the creek waters. Indeed, this record has increased the Odisha coast's stomatopod species diversity to fifteen.

Abstract:Three uncommon fishes, viz. porcupine whipray, Urogymnus asperrimus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), Shaggy angler, Antennarius hispidus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), and barless cardinalfish, Taeniamia ataenia (Randall & Satapoomin, 1999), are reported herein as first records from the Andaman Islands. The former two are hitherto not reported from the Islands, while the latter was found to be a new record for India. Porcupine whipray and barless cardinalfish were identified based on in situ photographs. Shaggy angler was identified based on two specimens collected from a discarded commercial beach–seine fishery. Categorized by IUCN as Vulnerable, porcupine whipray is previously known from Lakshadweep and the peninsular coasts of India. The shaggy angler was reported from a shallow muddy habitat of 5–7 m in the present study. Though the type locality of barless cardinalfish is the eastern Indian Ocean, this has not been recorded earlier from India.

Abstract:A single male specimen of Goneplacid crab, Carcinoplax haswelli (Miers, 1884) is recorded for the first time from the Indian Ocean. The crab specimen was collected from the trawl bycatch landing of the commercial demersal trawler operated between 30 and 150 m depth along the Gujarat coastal region, Northwest coast of India. This C. haswelli is previously recorded from northern Australia and Taiwan to South China Sea. Until now, C. haswelli is not observed or recorded from the Indian Ocean. In the present study, detailed information regarding the taxonomic identification and previous distribution of the goneplacid crab, C. haswelli is described.

Fishery, biology, and dynamics of Parapenaeopsis maxillipedo (Alcock, 1905) off the SE coast of Tamil Nadu (India).The current study was carried out between September 2022 to September 2023 from SE coast of Tamil Nadu for Parapenaeopsis shrimp. This shrimp, estimated to rank third in shrimp production, landed as 2216, 2032, and 1704 kg from Thoothukudi, Mandapam, and Nagapattinam landing centers, respectively. The catch per unit effort was calculated to check the abundance of this species and ranged from 21.83 to 96.41 kg, averaging 46.33% in both years. The total length of males and females was observed in the range of 5.5 to 10.5 cm and 6.5 to 12.5 cm, respectively. Female shrimp attained first maturity at 6.5 cm, whereas male shrimp were 5.5 cm. The gonadosomatic index was calculated and found to be the highest (5.64–5.78) in March and September and the lowest in April and October for both years. The absolute fecundity for P. maxillipedo was recorded and ranged from 38,500 to 1,32,000 ova per female. The highest index of relative importance was observed in October and April for both male (57.04) and female (73.82) shrimp. To estimate von Bertalanffy's growth equation in P. maxillipedo , the asymptotic length and growth coefficient ( K ) growth parameters were combined for both sexes and analyzedas 13.55 cm and 1.5 y −1 , respectively. The total mortality and natural mortality ( M ) were observed as 3.04 and 2.86 y −1 , respectively. Hence, fishing mortality was 0.18 y −1 , and the exploitation rate ( E ) was 0.06. The length at first catch per length (LC/L) and M / K values were calculated using the Y / R model as 0.52 and 1.2 for males and 0.48 and 1.3 for females, respectively. E was observed as 0.06, which was lower than the maximum E of 0.4, which showed that the P. maxillipedo fisheries along the SE coast of Tamil Nadu were at unexploited conditions.

Abstract:In the present study, 15 new records from Kavaratti Atoll are added to the ichthyofaunal diversity of the Lakshadweep Archipelago and six to the Indian fish fauna based on underwater photographs and videos. Fishes were recorded from both lagoon and forereef areas off Kavaratti. The new records include Cirripectes auritus (Blackflap blenny), Cirripectes polyzona (Barred blenny), Ecsenius bicolor (Bicolor blenny), Glyptoparus delicatulus (Delicate blenny), Amblyeleotris wheeleri (Gorgeous prawn-goby), Eviota punyit (Punyit dwarfgoby), Eviota cf. teresae (Viridescent dwarfgoby), Cirrhitichthys falco (Dwarf hawkfish), Halichoeres leucoxanthus (Canarytop wrasse), Pseudocheilinus evanidus (Disappearing wrasse), Coris latifasciata (Broad banded wrasse), Pomacentrus xanthocercus (Yellowtail damsel), Plectroglyphidodon luteobrunneus (Indian gregory), Pomacentrus indicus (Indian damsel) and Synodus dermatogenys (Sand lizardfish). Six species, G. delicatulus, E. cf. teresae, E. punyit, P. xanthocercus, P. evanidus and C. latifasciata represent new records for Indian waters. The genus Amblyeleotris is recorded for the first time from Lakshadweep.

Abstract:Shrimps are among the most intriguing groups within the Decapoda order. In Bangladesh, penaeid shrimps hold significant economic value as a major export commodity. This study aimed to analyze the morphometric and molecular characteristics of penaeid shrimps in Bangladesh. Two species of penaeid shrimp, Penaeus pulchricaudatus and Kishinouyepenaeopsis incisa were identified as new records in Bangladesh waters. A distinguishing feature of P. pulchricaudatus is its dark brown transverse bands that do not extend to the lower half of the carapace. The identification of these species was confirmed using both morphometric characteristics and DNA barcoding techniques. Two sequences were generated for these species utilizing the 16S rRNA gene marker. The findings reveal two new records of shrimp species in Bangladesh, expanding the known diversity of shrimp in the region and highlighting the presence of previously undocumented species. Abstract:In the present study, the fish parasitic Cymothoid, Nerocila phaiopleura Bleeker, 1857 attached with a Baitfish, Spratelloides delicatulus (Bennett, 1832) is reported for the first time from Lakshadweep Islands. Collected parasites were confirmed as N. phaiopleura based on morphological diagnosis. In total, eleven numbers of N. phaiopleura were collected from the anterior part of the individuals of S. delicatulus . Smaller size lesions in the body of host fish were also noticed. The report of this parasitic isopod from Lakshadweep Islands provides evidence on its geographic range extension and occurrence of the parasite, N. phaiopleura with a baitfish species, S. delicatulus , which is a new host.

Abstract:Four adult females of a rare benthic/epiphytic harpacticoid copepod species of the genus Peltidium Philippi, 1839 were collected from insular zooplankton samples obtained at Revillagigedo National Park, Mexico. They were identified as Peltidium nayarit Suárez-Morales & Jarquín-González, 2013 with type location (and the single previously known distribution site) at Playa Careyeros ( 20°46'59.46"N, 105°30'35.48"W ), Nayarit, Mexico. We provide a complementary description of this species including new details of antennules, caudal rami, legs 1 and 5, and cuticular ornamentation using scanning electron microscopy observations. Peltidium nayarit has a dark reddish-pink coloration allegedly mimicking the color of the macroalgae where they live, but specimens collected in the present study were obtained from sea surface zooplankton net tows. The record of Peltidium nayarit in the Revillagigedo Islands represents the southwestern-most record of the genus in the Americas and the second record for Mexico.

Abstract:Two species of stenopodidean shrimps are newly recorded from the tropical eastern Atlantic, each representing considerable extensions to their previously known biogeographical ranges. The shrimp genus Chicosciencea Bochini, Cunha, Terossi & Almeida, 2020, is confirmed as a junior synonym of Microprosthema Stimpson, 1860. Microprosthema pernambucensis (Bochini, Cunha, Terossi & Almeida, 2020), previously only known from northeastern Brazil, is reported for the first time from the tropical eastern Atlantic based on material collected in subtidal lava tubes on the coast of Sal, Cabo Verde, and re-illustrated in view of the limited original description. Odontozona addaia Pretus, 1990, previously only known from the Mediterranean Sea, is herein reported from the Atlantic Ocean proper, based on specimens from the same habitat, also in Cabo Verde.

Abstract:A new species of mangrove sesarmid crab, Nanosesarma gomantaka n. sp. is described on the basis of specimens collected from Chapora Estuary in Goa State, India. Nanosesarma gomantaka n. sp. closely resembles N. pontianacense (De Man, 1895) from Southeast and East Asia in having an elongated carapace, arcuate frontal lobes with a median notch and the presence of strong proximal spine on outer surface of male cheliped dactylus, but can be distinguished by the generally more arcuate frontal lobes with deep V-shaped median notch, the tip of the external orbital angle not extending beyond the rudimentary epibranchial tooth, and the proportionately more slender male first gonopod, with a straight distal portion bent at an obtuse angle.

Abstract:The tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon is native to the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, covering the east coast of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, China, the Sea of Japan, New Guinea and Australia. A new report was recorded on the capture in the wild of a female tiger shrimp P. monodon in conditions of reproductive maturity on the coast of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. The specimen was captured by a trawler operating near the coast of Campeche, in front of Carmen Island. The specimen was identified using dichotomous keys, additionally corroborated with analysis of the sequence of a fragment of 650 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI), and compared with the sequence of P. monodon reported in GenBank. The specimen was deposited in the National Collection of Crustaceans of the Institute of Biology of the UNAM. Histological analysis of the gonads revealed that the organism was in a reproductive condition as ovaries contained oocytes in an advanced development state. The molecular data (sequenced fragments F and R) were identical with the COI sequence of P. monodon deposited in GenBank, thus confirming the presence of P. monodon from the coasts of Isla del Carmen, Campeche.

Abstract:The present study claims the first occurrence report of Grandidierella halophilus Wongkamhaeng, Pholpunthin & Azman, 2012 from Indian waters. The species was identified as Grandidierella halophilus by carpochelate gnathopod 1, ventral margin of coxa of male gnathopod 2 posteriorly produced into a triangular expansion and having long plumose setae on the posterior margin of the basis of pereopod 7. The species was previously reported only from Thailand. The species was collected from Haripur creek, east coast of India and the salinity of the region was found to be 15 PSU. Based on the previous reports and as observed during the present study, it is concluded that the species is truly euryhaline. The present report increased the number of species in the genus from seven to eight in Indian waters.
