Disability and Rehabilitation Assistive Technology
Abstract:Purpose This pilot study aimed to (a) investigate opportunities for immersive Virtual Reality (VR) technology in communication, physical, and visual rehabilitation by examining the interaction of people without disabilities in a range of structured virtual environments; and (b) validate research protocols that might be used to evaluate the physical, visual, and verbal interaction of users in virtual worlds, and their safety while using the technology.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the potential applications of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) technology in rehabilitation therapy and to validate the effectiveness of research protocols used to assess users' physical, visual, and verbal interactions in a virtual world. Specifically, the study has two main objectives: 1. **Explore the application of immersive VR technology in rehabilitation**: By examining the interactions of non-disabled individuals in a series of structured virtual environments, identify the performance of novice users in the following aspects: - Experiencing cybersickness or any adverse events in the virtual environment; - Visual immersion and orientation within the virtual environment; - Interaction with characters, objects, and visual environments while immersed in the virtual world; - Support required to engage in the virtual environment using the immersive VR system. 2. **Validate the research protocols**: Evaluate whether these protocols can be used to assess users' physical, visual, and verbal interactions in the virtual world, as well as their safety during the use of the technology. By achieving these objectives, the researchers hope to gain insights into the types of environments and characters that support maximum communication, physical, and visual interaction, and to ensure the safety and effectiveness of future applications of VR technology for individuals with communication, physical, and visual impairments.
