Abstract:Payments for ecosystem services (PES) are becoming a global ecological protection strategy used to promote sustainable social and economic development. However, the current PES research and applications are often local and one-sided. The lack of a unified framework for PES results in a high policy cost and low ecological and social benefits. A large number of local PES experiences need to be comprehensively analyzed to construct a unified PES framework, which can provide support for the implementation and optimization of nature conservation policy in different regions of the world. Here, we combined natural language processing methods to analyze 1919 global studies on PES. We obtained the topics and spatiotemporal distributions of PES, as well as the compensation modes of hotspot ecosystem services in 114 countries worldwide. PES have been studied in 80% of the world (excluding Antarctica), but the research topics and distributions are very uneven. We found a disconnection between PES socioeconomic strategies and knowledge of natural ecosystem dynamics. Therefore, the knowledge and experience of PES must be exchanged globally, and PES need to be further integrated with the sustainable development goal (SDG) framework. We propose a PES framework that couples socioeconomic and ecosystem dynamics and be oriented toward sustainable development to make comprehensive management decisions. On this basis, a consistent PES solution may be provided for future theoretical research and implementation strategies of conservation.

Abstract:Changes have always been taking place on earth. However, the latest changes related to the climate, the COVID-19 pandemic, natural resources, pollution, to name a few, have changed our world and a new normal is emerging. The energy-water-environment-food-health nexus is becoming more complex. These challenges, however, also provide opportunities to tackle them and make scientific and engineering advances. PSE is well-placed through its core and expanding domain as well as its ability to apply a systems approach to meet current and future challenges. Many opportunities exist for the PSE community to take the lead in managing this complexity. This paper will provide an overview on some of the key challenges and opportunities where PSE could make immediate as well as long lasting impacts by developing sustainable and innovative solutions. Focus will be placed on the choice of problems to solve and the solution approaches that could make an impact and help to define the new normal for future generations.

Abstract:The unprecedented global movement of school education to find technological and intelligent solutions to keep the learning ecosystem working was not enough to recover the impacts of Covid-19, not only due to learning-related challenges but also due to the rise of negative emotions, such as frustration, anxiety, boredom, risk of burnout and the so-called "Covid fatigue". Although this is not a new problem, it was deepened during the pandemic, and we need to face old and new challenges in different ways. Despite focusing only on the learning system's inefficiencies and on the hegemony of solutions to tackle the learning gap, we also need to shed light on the strengths and the positive aspects of the learning process to promote wellbeing. As highlighted by John Self, an intelligent tutoring system would behave as if it genuinely cared about the student's success. This note from John Self sheds light on the importance and reflection of what success means and for whom. This study presents a roadmap for positive psychology and artificial intelligence in education. It is intended to identify and understand how the intersection of Positive Psychology and Artificial Intelligence in Education can support the promotion of learning and wellbeing of students, teachers, and other educational stakeholders. As such, a bibliometric analysis of positive psychology and artificial intelligence in education was made as the so-called Positive Artificial Intelligence in Education (P-AIED). The search string was performed in 2021, and the total number of studies gathered was 10,777. After all the PRISMA steps, 256 studies were approved according to the inclusion criteria. The main conclusions were the high number of institutions and researchers with related publications indicate a new trend for the community of AIED; the high number of collaboration from different countries indicates a possible global movement toward P-AIED; Positive Emotion and Engagement were the main Positive Psychology constructs identified in the studies; the lack of well-grounded theories of Positive Psychology indicates an excellent research opportunity; Positive Learning Analytics (P-LA), Positive Educational Data Mining (P-EDM) and Positive Intelligent Tutoring Systems (P-ITS) are three hot topics for P-AIED.

Abstract:Academics have not quantified the quantity and quality of research conducted on pesantren (Islamic boarding school), particularly concerning the development of digital technology. Indeed, the current pesantren trend has accelerated as a response to the development of online media. This article will analyze emerging research trends, mentor academics involved in pesantren’s research, and direct researchers. Additionally, this article discusses the most influential authors and journals in the area. The research aims to evaluate pesantren's research trends indexed in Scopus using bibliometric analysis software Publish or Perish and VOS Viewer. The study discovered that pesantren's research has shifted during the last decade. According to the data, scholars continue to study pesantren's research themes infrequently, as indicated by the indexation of only 61 publications by Scopus. The majority of researchers use a conventional approach to pesantren. As such, it is critical to conduct future research on the relationship between pesantren and the advancement of digital technology. Specifically, in the form of Kiai (teacher) or santri-based learning (student-based learning) models and the process of pesantren adaptation, as indicated by the establishment of numerous pesantren media platforms as centers for religious knowledge production and dissemination. Thus, pesantren will keep being the source of religious knowledge by adapting to tradition and technology.

Abstract:This paper serves as an introduction to a problem statement for the task of designing a digital ecosystem of public employment services(PES) supported by human-machine processes. It looks at AI and algorithms and the nature of their usage in PES and, also, how, by aligning with the Human Centered ethos of Professor Michael Cooley PES can be improved for the benefit of society. As a basis from which to start, this paper shines a light on an ongoing Horizon 2020 funded collaborative project called HECAT – Disruptive Technologies Supporting Labour Market Decision Making which started from February 2020 and runs to July 2023. The HECAT project is co-ordinated by Waterford Institute of Technology and supported by partners across Europe. It has been worked on by colleagues of the authors and is concerned with the development of new technologies that valorise the PES customer. It aims to improve the PES user experience by leveraging AI and algorithms to provide real-time evidence-based insights to improve services. Professor Michael Cooley founded, with many others, the Human-Centred Systems (HCS) movement. The HCS approach valorises human tacit knowledge and strives to augment but not replace the work of the human with technology using socially useful production for the benefit of society. This paper synthesises the work of HECAT research so far and similar works so far. This work embodies new trans-disciplinary research at the convergence point of artificial intelligence and the social sciences which is, in this paper, viewed through the lens of the collective works of Professor Michael Cooley.

Abstract:This work explores the transition to intelligent corporate social responsibility (CSR) 2.0, an advanced approach to CSR that integrates artificial intelligence and new technologies to promote sustainability and efficiency. In Morocco, this evolution is of great importance, as it is part of the ambitious national vision of sustainable development, with objectives to reduce environmental impact and promote transparency. Moroccan public establishments and enterprises (PEE), as key players in crucial sectors such as energy, water and infrastructure, have already begun to develop CSR strategies. However, it has become clear that the shift towards intelligent Social Responsibility of the Organizations (RSO or OSR) based on artificial intelligence and new technologies is essential to meet current and future challenges. This subject is of paramount importance in the Moroccan context, as it offers a concrete means of achieving the country’s sustainability goals while strengthening regional leadership. In addition, it opens the door to future research and studies in this field, encouraging other researchers to explore this promising avenue which has positive potential for humanity as a whole, creating responsible and sustainable development models for the future.

Abstract:The Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) was established in 2011, and is now one of the major international social-ecological systems (SES) research networks. During this time, SES research has undergone a phase of rapid growth and has grown into an influential branch of sustainability science. In this Perspective, we argue that SES research has also deepened over the past decade, and helped to shed light on key dimensions of SES dynamics (e.g. system feedbacks, aspects of system design, goals and paradigms) that can lead to tangible action for solving the major sustainability challenges of our time. We suggest four ways in which the growth of place-based SES research, fostered by networks such as PECS, has contributed to these developments, namely by: 1) shedding light on transformational change, 2) revealing the social dynamics shaping SES, 3) bringing together diverse types of knowledge, and 4) encouraging reflexive researchers.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, there has been substantial growth in Positive Organization in Psychological research, advancing our understanding of effectiveness and satisfaction at work. However, a new wave of inquiry and novelty is about to hit the sector, which might transform its the discourse.The theoretical basis of 'Psychology of Organizations 2.0' (POP 2.0) is outlined in this document as an information-driven, scientifically validated field that uses focused on humanity planning and technological advancement to explore and enhance positive aspects of individuals, institutions, and society for optimal emotional well-being.The commencement strategy section provides a brief history of the formation of COP, highlighting its key characteristics and looking at the causes of its explosive growth and waning importance. Next, we develop COP 2.0, outline its key features, and advocate for upgraded processes, a larger core audience, and pioneering role changes for practitioners. We conclude by outlining opportunities, challenges, and points of view for the anticipated wave of contemporary research.

Abstract:The digital technologies and systems have considerable impacts on the development of entities, countries, and society. More than just finding solutions, they support the considerable expansions of human activities to observe critical situations of development and overcome them. To face up to these expansions, following service science, development is based on service ecosystems with an informational infrastructure comprising an information base, organizational and digital architectures. All activities of development are multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, multinational, and, what's more, they combine many aspects, societal, digital, political, legal, ethical. Despite their heterogeneity, the private-public partnership for services (4PS) provides them with a framework to foster efficiency, cognitive unity, and identity. Finally, this approach enables a clear picture of how the development and its outcomes are democratic, inclusive, responsible, and accountable.

Abstract:The challenges represented by chronic conditions worldwide are related to disease management and patient engagement. Healthcare should open not only to new tools and resources but also to innovative approaches. This contribution deepens the concept of P5 medicine, namely, an evolution of patient-centered medicine approaches which tries to identify the main characteristics medical interventions should have in order to meet patients’ needs. Specifically, healthcare should be predictive, personalized, preventive, participatory, and psychocognitive. eHealth, or the use of new technologies in healthcare contexts, represents an extraordinary opportunity to achieve all of these features. The second part of this contribution will present brief history of eHealth, its development, the multiple forms it assumes today, and literature on encouraging results and emerging criticalities as well. The present book will feature guidelines and examples of how eHealth could be designed and implemented in order to reach P5 recommendations in healthcare globally.

Abstract:In the post-pandemic era, the world simultaneously witnessed a rapid move towards technological integration and global interconnectedness, alongside social-economic disparities and setbacks. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific progress extended beyond the healthcare industry and encompassed various domains of knowledge, including education. The pandemic accelerated the incorporation of ICT in education, an area that had lagged behind other sectors. Conversely, digital integration generates a disparity in knowledge acquisition between individuals who possess access to it and those who do not. This experience serves as a reminder that a considerable number of communities globally remain behind in terms of socioeconomic development and access to digital resources. This trend is especially evident in the global south, where the integration of numerous global educational innovations and approaches may further isolate an already marginalized community by failing to account for contextual factors. Providing this complexity of introducing innovative efforts to education, it is imperative to refocus contextual educational paradigms, employing a multimodal approach that intertwines research, innovation, technology integration, and social inclusion. The purpose of this editorial is to emphasize the importance of an all-encompassing educational approach that not only equips students for the challenges of the future but also cultivates a just, inventive, and resilient society. A total of 11 papers were selected to be published in this issue, which examines four significant domains of educational transformation: the integration of technology, innovative approaches, research in education, and the representation of perspectives from underrepresented groups in education. The increasing integration of technology in the field of education is evident in the articles that discuss ICT, media usage, and visual materials. Two papers revisit inquiry-based science instruction and school-home partnerships as educational strategies. Two publications centered on teachers' practice and intention research and action research exemplify the recent shift towards involving teachers in research activities, both in higher education and at the classroom level. Three additional papers investigate the perspectives of students and underprivileged groups who are often overlooked in the development of education procedures and policies. This journal issue, thus, represents the current focus, endeavors, and implementation of education across several educational disciplines. Abstract:With growing discussion and action around inequality, climate change, and a global pandemic, do the current pillars of public administration, economy, efficiency, and effectiveness, also known as the 3Es, meet the needs of the public administration? We propose that there are new pillars which better respond to 21st century problems in ways not addressed through values of efficiency, effectiveness, and economy. In this article, we will explore these new 4Es (empathy, engagement, equity, and ethics) in more depth, as well as articles in the first half of this double special issues on the topic. Through this article and special issue, we are eager to move the field of public administration forward towards creating more engaged, empathetic, equitable, and ethical public and nonprofit organizations.

Abstract:Background: Partnership, engagement, and collaboration (PEC) are critical factors in dissemination and implementation (D&I) research. Despite a growing recognition that incorporating PEC strategies in D&I research is likely to increase the relevance, feasibility, impacts, and of evidence-based interventions or practices (EBIs, EBPs), conceptual frameworks and methodologies to guide the development and testing of PEC strategies in D&I research are lacking. To address this methodological gap, a review was conducted to summarize what we know, what we think we know, and what we need to know about PEC to inform D&I research. Methods: A cross-field scoping review, drawing upon a broad range of PEC related literature in health, was conducted. Publications reviewed focused on factors influencing PEC, and processes, mechanisms and strategies for promoting effective PEC. The review was conducted separately for three forms of partnerships that are commonly used in D&I research: (1) consumer-provider or patient-implementer partnership; (2) delivery system or implementation team partnership; and (3) sustainment/support or interagency/community partnership. A total of 39 studies, of which 21 were review articles, were selected for an in-depth review. Results: Across three forms of partnerships, four domains (cognitive, interpersonal/affective, behavioral, and contextual domains) were consistently identified as factors and strategies for promoting PEC. Depending on the stage (preparation or execution) and purpose of the partnership (regulating performance or managing maintenance), certain PEC strategies are more or less relevant. Recent developments of PEC frameworks, such as Partnership Stage of Change and multiple dynamic processes, provide more comprehensive conceptual explanations for PEC mechanisms, which can better guide PEC strategies selection and integration in D&I research. Conclusions: This review contributes to D&I knowledge by identifying critical domain factors, processes, or mechanisms, and key strategies for PEC, and offers a multi-level PEC framework for future research to build the evidence base. However, more research is needed to test PEC mechanisms.

Abstract:Message from the ISCPES President: Prof Dr Rosa López de D’Amico It gives me great pleasure to present the inaugural issue of the International Sports Studies (ISS) publication as a fully open-access journal starting in 2024. The journal has come a long way since its first distribution in 1979. Together with this significant development, we welcome Prof. Dr Richard Bailey, who joins as co-editor of the ISS. Prof. Richard Peter Bailey, FRSA, is Deputy Dean, Head of Research, and Full Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at UCSI University in Malaysia. He is also Deputy Director of the Center of Research for Mental Health and Wellbeing in Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, he is listed among Stanford University’s top scientists in the world for Clinical Medicine, Sport Sciences, and Education. Allow me to thank you for accepting the challenge of joining our Chief Editor, Dr Maria Luisa Guinto, in this new phase of the ISS journal. Welcome to the team! Scholarly publishing is a challenging path, but we hope that by working together, we can continue providing a suitable platform for scholars worldwide to publish their work in Physical Education and sports. My gratitude extends to those supporting the editorial team, from among the previous and new team members, particularly Dr Klaudia Rafael, who remains the ISS Associate Editor. Another important piece of news is the agreement with the Routledge publishing house regarding approval of the continued publication of the ISCPES Book Series. The series was actively circulated between 1999 and 2003, yet the books are still in demand. With this agreement, the book series will continue with new titles, aiming to systematically extend knowledge of relevant issues, themes, and topics. The over-riding aim is to facilitate more profound awareness and understanding of physical education and sport across various socio-cultural, geographical, political, and thematic contexts. Each volume will focus on a thematic issue in different national or regional political entity settings. Each text can be used separately or to form an integrated basis for informed comparisons of thematic topics. This initiative contributes to critical awareness and analysis amongst confirmed and potential comparativists and young scholars at under- and post-graduate levels. Concomitantly, they will provide authentic materials for critical comparisons and test the generality of statements about common development patterns and issues in sport and physical education across different cultures. Another essential and distinctive feature of the book series is positioning the discourse on the problems and themes from a genuinely international perspective. As such, we can go beyond traditional mainstream literature and expand the knowledge generation to include local academics, incorporating underrepresented voices, expanding potential readership, and providing a sound and informed basis for critical comparative, transnational, and cross-cultural understanding. Two projects have already been approved for publication, one in late 2024 and the other in 2025. Dr Walter Ho leads the first one, Quality Physical Education (QPE) and Global Practice. Dr Usha Nair heads the second one, Physical Education in India: Exploring Tradition, Development, and Contemporary Perspectives. We look forward to these publications as we continue to work on various research projects for future publications. I wish to echo the Society on the call of expression for bidding to the 23rd Biennial ISCPES congress that will take place in late 2025. For more details, please contact any of our board members. Finally, I invite you to submit your papers to the ISS journal. Online teaching and learning in physical education teacher education: A mixed studies review of literature

Abstract:European Physical Education Review, Ahead of Print. Delivering physical education teacher education (PETE) programmes through online platforms has been proposed as an alternative (or complementary) to traditional in-person modes of learning. Focusing on empirical studies, this mixed studies review explores the use of online teaching and learning in PETE and synthesises literature published between 2010 and 2020. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. A data-based convergent synthesis design is adopted. Pedagogies and technologies commonly used are examined. Studies using a blended approach to teaching and learning provide more detail about the pedagogies and technologies used than those studies using a fully online model. There is scant information regarding the principles underpinning the development and delivery of online PETE courses. We provide extensive insights into the key learning from the experiences of faculty and pre-service teachers who engage with online teaching and learning in PETE. Our findings suggest online instruction may suit particular students and facilitate a shift to independent learning. Teaching and learning in the online space can impact the development of relationships, both positively and negatively. Furthermore, constructivist pedagogies should be prioritised, alongside support for students and teacher educators to develop online learning competence. Our review highlights considerations for teacher educators engaging in online teaching and learning in PETE and implications for future research.

Abstract:Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), a market-based policy instrument for the conservation and environmental management that aims to coordinate the interests of upstream and downstream ecosystem service (ES) stakeholders, has been adopted worldwide. However, the success of PES depends on the desirability of programs targeting rural communities and smallholders. In this article, an agent-based sustainability perspective on PES was proposed and applied to examine a PES case study of the Converting-Orchard-to-Forest (COF) project in Dongjiang Headwater Watershed (DHW). We used household interview-based information and associated secondary data to quantitatively assess the environmental consequences and livelihood impacts of the COF project. The findings show that: (1) the COF participants at the upstream suffered from substantial income loss due to decreased orchard area; (2) the participants’ chemical fertilizer and compound fertilizer consumption was larger than their nonparticipating counterparts; and (3) the COF participants and nonparticipants increased the material assets and reduced their fuelwood use and increased the liquefied petroleum gas. Our findings suggest that, because of the significant income loss experienced by the upstream participants, the COF program is unsustainable with the participants very likely to cultivate the orchard again once the COF project ends. The research provides insightful information regarding PES implementation and sustainability of similar PES schemes.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is an innovative concept poised to transform energy demand management and utilization. EnergyShare AI is a powerful peer-to-peer energy exchange system that operates on a P2P model that integrates advanced machine learning with distributed energy sharing. This paper presents EnergyShare AI, a technology that connects consumers and prosumers through solar arrays, energy storage systems (ESS), and electric vehicles (EVs). Using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms, Energy Share AI significantly improves energy management efficiency and substantially reduces costs. Our approach offers several advantages over traditional linear integer programming models, particularly in optimizing bidirectional energy transfer involving EVs and highlighting the critical role of ESS and photovoltaic (PV) systems in facilitating efficient P2P energy trading. Our research results show that successful P2P exchange can lead to significant cost savings and improved sustainability, thereby increasing the amount of energy transferred between different household profiles and stages of human development.
