Abstract:A great deal of research has contributed to the energy efficiency of battery-operated devices in the area of wireless communications, but recently, the energy consumption of the underlying network infrastructure has started to attract more attention as people have become aware of the significant fraction of energy consumed by the Internet of all the energy we consume. We argue that the architecture of routers in constructing the Internet can be improved so as to fully utilize chances to save energy related to transmission equipment. A green reconfigurable router is thus presented for this purpose.
A Hop-by-hop Routing Mechanism for Green Internet

Abstract:In this paper we study energy conservation in the Internet. We observe that different traffic volumes on a link can result in different energy consumption; this is mainly due to such technologies as trunking (IEEE 802.1AX), adaptive link rates, etc. We design a green Internet routing scheme, where the routing can lead traffic in a way that is green. We differ from previous studies where they switch network components, such as line cards and routers, into sleep mode. We do not prune the Internet topology. We first develop a power model, and validate it using real commercial routers. Instead of developing a centralized optimization algorithm, which requires additional protocols such as MPLS to materialize in the Internet, we choose a hop-by-hop approach. It is thus much easier to integrate our scheme into the current Internet. We progressively develop three algorithms, which are loop-free, substantially reduce energy consumption, and jointly consider green and QoS requirements such as path stretch. We further analyze the power saving ratio, the routing dynamics, and the relationship between hop-by-hop green routing and QoS requirements. We comprehensively evaluate our algorithms through simulations on synthetic, measured, and real topologies, with synthetic and real traffic traces. We show that the power saving in the line cards can be as much as 50%.

Abstract:With the aim to address the problem that current energy-saving algorithms in the IP network were low practical,an energy-saving method in the reconfigurable network architecture based on its natural features was proposed that the central server unified manages the routing configuration of all the routers.The method firstly using the modified OSPF protocol algorithm to determine a candidate link set in which all the links were probably closed or sleep,then the multi-commodity model was utilized to remap the traffic volume of these links to other physical paths.Thus,some links can be idle since their data flows had been redirected.It was reasonable to power off idle physical links for the purpose of saving energy.Finally,the simulated experiments had verified the effects of saving energy and the differences between the proposed algorithm and the high recognized energy-saving method –GreenTE were given.

Abstract:We present a study on minimizing non-renewable energy for the Internet. The classification of renewable and non-renewable energy brings in several challenges. First, it is necessary to understand how the routing system can distinguish the two types of energy in the power supply. Second, the routing problem changes due to renewable energy; and so do the algorithm designs and analysis. We first clarify the model of how routers can distinguish renewable and non-renewable energy supporting their power supply. This cannot be determined by the routing system alone, and involves modeling the energy generation and supply of the grid. We then present the router power consumption model, which has a fixed startup power and a dynamic traffic-dependent power. We formulate a minimum non-renewable energy routing problem, and two special cases representing either the startup power dominates or the traffic-dependent power dominates. We analyze the complexity of these problems, develop optimal and sub-optimal algorithms, and jointly consider QoS requirements such as path stretch. We evaluate our algorithms using real data from both National and European centers. As compared to the algorithms minimizing the total energy, our algorithms can reduce the non-renewable energy consumption for more than 20% under realistic assumptions.

Abstract:Recently, a new design framework, called GreenRouter, has been proposed to reduce the power consumption of backbone routers. In a GreenRouter, a line card is partitioned into two functional parts, namely, an InTerFace (ITF) part that is relatively much lighter and a Processing Engine (PE) part that is relatively much heavier, in power consumption. This partitioning allows ITFs to share the collective processing capability of PEs, which in turn allows a significant percentage of PEs to be put into sleep mode (to save energy) during periods of light link utilizations. In this paper, we study how ITFs can distribute traffic flows to the PEs so that the offered loads on all active PEs are near-perfectly balanced over time, and kept close to a target load (say 90%), so that the number of active PEs can be minimized. Since Green- Router's original solution to this problem is quite crude,we propose a principled solution that has much lower system overheads and achieves better load-balance. Throughboth simulation studies and rigorous analyses, we show our solution can, with high probability, rapidly restore the nearperfect load balance among active PEs, after each PE overload event.

Several key issues to this new architecture are addressed. We evaluate the power saving efficiency and give preliminary simulation results. GreenRouter can well adapt the traffic fluctuation and real trace evaluations over one week shows that up to 63.7% power saving can be achieved while QoS constraints are guaranteed.

Abstract:Current network infrastructures exhibit poor power efficiency, running network devices at full capacity all the time regardless of the traffic demand and distribution over the network. Most research on router power management are at component level or link level, treating routers as isolated devices. A complementary approach is to facilitate power management at network level by routing traffic through different paths to adjust the workload on individual routers or links. Given the high path redundancy and low link utilization in today's large networks, this approach can potentially allow more network devices or components to go into power saving mode. This paper proposes an intra-domain traffic engineering mechanism, GreenTE, which maximizes the number of links that can be put into sleep under given performance constraints such as link utilization and packet delay. Using network topologies and traffic data from several wide-area networks, our evaluation shows that GreenTE can reduce line-cards' power consumption by 27% to 42% under constraints that the maximum link utilization is below 50% and the network diameter remains the same as in shortest path routing.

Abstract:This chapter provides an overview on the current research progress in the green wireless communication field. Three key issues are discussed on green wireless communications. First, the metrics and the corresponding evaluation methods are discussed as the basis of energy efficiency optimization for wireless networks. Second, several methods are adopted to optimize the energy efficiency. For reducing the energy consumption, the methods can be categorized into two types, decreasing the equipment usage and adjusting the resource allocation. Third, the energy consumption increases and the energy efficiency decreases with the increasing transmit data rate. It is necessary to balance the tradeoff between energy and performance in practical wireless networks. Finally, the technical challenges are discussed towards green wireless communications.

Abstract:Operating the Internet infrastructure in an energy-efficient manner ("Green Internet") becomes a challenging issue in most recent years with the recognition of significant energy consumption due to its large scale. Yet a limited number of contributions are available to address the issue mainly through putting idle routers and links into sleep mode, at the price of low global resource utilization efficiency and degraded network performance. This paper follows the same line of research but investigates an optimal solution of configuring IP network topology to minimize the number of active routers and links, and hence energy consumption, whilst keep the interference on network operation minimal. An optimal energy-efficient network model along with a heuristic algorithm is proposed for identifying the network elements in sleep mode to attain approximately the best trade-off between the energy-efficiency and performance degradation. Numerical experiments are carried out to assess the solution for a range of network and load scenarios and the results clearly demonstrate its effectiveness.

Abstract:Reducing energy consumption - and especially carbon emissions - is one of the most important challenges facing humankind. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is a powerful tool to reduce emissions as it offers alternatives to activities that are costly in energy: video streaming saves energy vs driving to a movie theater, for instance. Still, the carbon footprint of ICT in general and networking in particular have been growing, despite better energy efficiency per transmitted bit, due to the sheer growth in Internet usage and traffic. The information and communication technology (ICT) sector is currently estimated to create 2.7% of all global CO2 emissions and expected to continue to increase. Hence, monitoring and reducing the CO2 emissions from ICT is increasingly important. Networks are responsible for around 13% of ICT energy consumption, a third of which in turn is attributable to backbone (core) networks. As such, it is important to offer new mechanisms to reduce the energy footprint of networks. In this paper, we present a framework to include energy considerations (as a proxy for carbon footprint) into the management plane of a network. We apply this framework to optimize the network topology so as to minimize the energy spending while at the same time providing a satisfactory Quality of Experience (QoE) to the end users. We present this framework along high-level considerations, as its deployment and evaluation is left for future work.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the multiobjective optimization problem for green network routing. Although traditional commonly used multiobjective optimization methods can yield a Pareto efficient solution, they need to construct an aggregate objective function (AOF) or model one objective as a constraint in the optimization problem formulation. As a result, it is difficult to achieve a fair tradeoff among all objectives. Accordingly, we induce a Nash bargaining framework, which treats the two objectives as two virtual players in a game theoretic model, who negotiate how traffic should be routed to optimize both objectives. During the negotiation, each of them announces its performance threat value to reduce its cost, so the model is regarded as a threat value game. Our analysis shows that no agreement can be achieved if each player sets its threat value selfishly. To avoid such a negotiation break-down, we modify the threat value game to have a repeated process and design a mechanism to not only guarantee an agreement, but also generate a fair solution. Finally, to evaluate the efficiency of our proposed framework, we implement it into two multiobjective optimization cases for network green routing. The first case is load balancing and energy efficiency optimization for intradomain routing, and the second one is the energy efficiency optimization of two domains for interdomain routing.

We give the detailed architectural design of GreenRouter. Real-trace driven experiments show that GreenRouter can save about 50% power compared to the conventional router when the average traffic load is 30%, while providing quality of service guarantee at the same time.

Abstract:Harvesting energy from nature (solar, wind etc.) is envisioned as a key enabler for realizing green wireless networks. However, green energy sources are geographically distributed and the power amount is random which may not enough to power a base station by a single energy site. Burning brown energy sources such as coal and crude oil, though companied with carbon dioxide emission, provides stable power. In this paper, without sacrificing communication quality, we investigate how to perform green energy allocation to abate the dependence on brown energy with hybrid brown and green energy injected in power networks. We present a comprehensive framework to characterize the performance of hybrid green and brown energy empowered cellular network. Novel performance metric "bits/ton\ce{CO2}/Hz" is proposed to evaluate the greenness of the communication network. As green energy is usually generated from distributed geographical locations and is time varying, online geographical power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the greenness of communication network considering electricity transmission's physical laws i.e., Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's circuit laws. Simulations show that geographically distributed green energy sources complement each other by improving the communication capacity while saving brown energy consumption. Besides, the penetration of green energy can also help reduce power loss on the transmission breaches.

Abstract:The explosive development of the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Industry has emerged as one of the major sources of world energy consumption. In particular, China has already become the No.1 country with the largest market of telephone users as well as Internet users, while it is still in a fast growing phase. As a result, having the information and communication networks in China more GREEN is one of the most critical issues for a sustainable future of both China itself and the whole world. This talk will address the paradigm shift of the information networks, in particular the wireless communication networks, from the viewpoint of energy-efficiency, and a new concept of GREEN is proposed: Globally Resource-optimized and Energy-Efficient Networks. Specifically, both the power saving mechanisms of wireless LANs and base station (BS) cooperation schemes of cellular networks will be discussed. Theoretical modeling and simulation studies have shown that the data retrieval schemes and the base station coordination schemes can greatly improve the energy-efficiency of wireless networks, while the resource utilization can be kept at a satisfactory level. Abstract:The inefficiency of energy usage on the Internet has become a critical problem with its rapid growth, as all network devices operate at full capacity in spite of the real traffic load. Existing studies try to develop energy efficient routings by aggregating traffic and switching underutilized devices into sleep mode. However, most existing approaches do not address the problem of routing convergence well. Since traffic changes frequently in a network, routing convergence may be triggered frequently for an energy efficient routing, which may induce routing loops and black holes, resulting in severe packet loss. In this paper, we present a fast rerouting-based (FRR-based) energy efficient routing scheme, namely GreenFRR, which leverages the technique of fast rerouting to reduce the convergence time. We first study typical fast rerouting techniques and address the challenge of guaranteeing loop-free routing. Then, we formalize the FRR-based energy efficient routing problem and prove that the problem is NP-hard. In order to solve this problem, we design heuristic algorithms to maximize the number of sleeping links. In particular, we consider link utilization ratio and path stretch in our algorithms. We evaluate our scheme by simulations on real and synthetic topologies with real and synthetic traffic traces. The results show that the power consumed by line cards achieves a saving of 40% and the convergence time can be reduced by 95%.

Abstract:This paper discusses metrics and evaluation methods for energy efficiency in wireless networks. It is proposed that carbon emissions are the standard for measuring energy efficiency, and energy efficiency is evaluated according to different network loads. Using the metric model, several methods are available for reducing energy consumption, including decreasing equipment usage, radio resource scheduling, and node cooperation. Monitoring and evaluating energy efficiency should also be added to wireless network protocols as an extra module. Technical challenges associated with optimizing and evaluating energy efficiency are discussed in conclusion.

Reordering is adopted to avoid out-of-order delivery.
