It will be more convenient if the parser and printer can be unified and developed in one single program, with their consistency guaranteed automatically. Furthermore, in certain scenarios (like showing compiler optimisation results to the programmer), it is desirable to have a more powerful reflective printer that, when an abstract syntax tree corresponding to a piece of program text is modified, can reflect the modification to the program text while preserving layouts, comments, and syntactic sugar. To address these needs, we propose a domain-specific language BiYacc, whose programs denote both a parser and a reflective printer for an unambiguous context-free grammar. BiYacc is based on the theory of bidirectional transformations, which helps to guarantee by construction that the pairs of parsers and reflective printers generated by BiYacc are consistent. We show that BiYacc is capable of facilitating many tasks such as Pombrio and Krishnamurthi's "resugaring", simple refactoring, and language evolution.

Handling grammatical ambiguity is particularly challenging: we propose an approach based on generalised parsing and disambiguation filters, which produce all the parse results and (try to) select the only correct one in the parsing direction; the filters are carefully bidirectionalised so that they also work in the printing direction and do not break the consistency between the parsers and reflective printers. We show that BiYacc is capable of facilitating many tasks such as Pombrio and Krishnamurthi’s ‘resugaring’, simple refactoring, and language evolution.
Constructing Format-Preserving Printing from Syntax-Directed Definitions.

Abstract:Transformations between source codes, such as refactorings and program analysis, are frequently used in software engineering. Typically, transformations are effectively implemented using an abstract syntax tree (AST) on the origin source code. However, a critical limitation of ASTs is the loss of layout information such as whitespace and comments, which can result in poor readability. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes a bidirectional transformation (BX) method that maintains consistency in the layout between the origin and transformed. First, a section of origin source code will be translated to a concrete syntax tree (CST) that includes layout information. Second, to make the BX practical, a new method is constructed that matches an AST with its respective CST. Finally, to get a reasonable CST, a method to amend the CST is also provided. We prove that the BX is well-behaved, which implies that it satisfies both the PutGet and GetPut laws. Furthermore, we illustrate the correctness of the methodology by treating XML language as a case study.
BiBL: AMR Parsing and Generation with Bidirectional Bayesian Learning.

Abstract:Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) offers a unified semantic representation for natural language sentences. Thus transformation between AMR and text yields two transition tasks in opposite directions, i.e., Text-to-AMR parsing and AMR-to-Text generation. Existing AMR studies only focus on one-side improvements despite the duality of the two tasks, and their improvements are greatly attributed to the inclusion of large extra training data or complex structure modifications which harm the inference speed. Instead, we propose data-efficient Bidirectional Bayesian learning (BiBL) to facilitate bidirectional information transition by adopting a single-stage multitasking strategy so that the resulting model may enjoy much lighter training at the same time. Evaluation on benchmark datasets shows that our proposed BiBL outperforms strong previous seq2seq refinements without the help of extra data which is indispensable in existing counterpart models. BiGUL: a Formally Verified Core Language for Putback-Based Bidirectional Programming.

Abstract:Putback-based bidirectional programming allows the programmer to write only one putback transformation, from which the unique corresponding forward transformation is derived for free. The logic of a putback transformation is more sophisticated than that of a forward transformation and does not always give rise to well-behaved bidirectional programs; this calls for more robust language design to support development of well-behaved putback transformations. In this paper, we design and implement a concise core language BiGUL for putback-based bidirectional programming to serve as a foundation for higher-level putback-based languages. BiGUL is completely formally verified in the dependently typed programming language Agda to guarantee that any putback transformation written in BiGUL is well-behaved.
Inferring Drop-in Binary Parsers from Program Executions

Abstract:We present BIEBER (Byte-IdEntical Binary parsER), the first system to model and regenerate a full working parser from instrumented program executions. To achieve this, BIEBER exploits the regularity (e.g., header fields and array-like data structures) that is commonly found in file formats. Key generalization steps derive strided loops that parse input file data and rewrite concrete loop bounds with expressions over input file header bytes. These steps enable BIEBER to generalize parses of specific input files to obtain parsers that operate over input files of arbitrary size. BIEBER also incrementally and efficiently infers a decision tree that reads file header bytes to route input files of different types to inferred parsers of the appropriate type. The inferred parsers and decision tree are expressed in an IR; separate backends (C and Perl in our prototype) can translate the IR into the same language as the original program (for a safer drop-in replacement), or automatically port to a different language. An empirical evaluation shows that BIEBER can successfully regenerate parsers for six file formats (waveform audio [1654 files], MT76x0 .BIN firmware containers [5 files], OS/2 1.x bitmap images [9 files], Windows 3.x bitmaps [9971 files], Windows 95/NT4 bitmaps [133 files], and Windows 98/2000 bitmaps [859 files]), correctly parsing 100% (>= 99.98% when using standard held-out cross-validation) of the corresponding corpora. The regenerated parsers contain automatically inserted safety checks that eliminate common classes of errors such as memory errors. We find that BIEBER can help reverse-engineer file formats, because it automatically identifies predicates for the decision tree that relate to key semantics of the file format. We also discuss how BIEBER helped us detect and fix two new bugs in stb_image as well as independently rediscover and fix a known bug.

Abstract:Bidirectional transformations bx are a mechanism for maintaining the consistency of two (or more) related sources of information. Researchers from many different areas of computer science including databases (DB), graph transformations (GT), software engineering (SE), and programming languages (PL) are actively investigating the use of bx to solve a diverse set of problems. Although researchers have been actively working on bidirectional transformations in the above mentioned communities for many years already, there has been very little cross-discipline interaction and cooperation so far. The purpose of a first International Meeting on Bidirectional Transformations (GRACE-BX), held in December 2008 near Tokyo, was therefore to bring together international elites, promising young researchers, and leading practitioners to share problems, discuss solutions, and open a dialogue towards understanding the common underpinnings of bx in all these areas. While the GRACE-BX meeting provided a starting point for exchanging ideas in different communities and confirmed our believe that there is a considerable overlap of studied problems and developed solutions in the identified communities, the Dagstuhl Seminar 11031 on ``Bidirectional Transformations'' also aimed at providing a place for working together to define a common vocabulary of terms and desirable properties of bidirectional transformations, develop a suite of benchmarks, solve some challenging problems, and launch joint efforts to form a living bx community of cooperating experts across the identified subdisciplines. This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 11031 with abstracts of tutorials, working groups, and presentations on specific research topics.
An Efficient Composition of Bidirectional Programs by Memoization and Lazy Update.

Abstract:Bidirectional transformations (BX) are a solution to the view update problem and widely used for synchronizing data. The semantics and correctness of bidirectional programs have been investigated intensively during the past years, but their efficiency and optimization are not yet fully understood. In this paper, as a first step, we study different evaluation methods to optimize their evaluation. We focus on the interpretive evaluation of BX compositions because we found that these compositions are an important cause of redundant computations if the compositions are not right associative. For evaluating BX compositions efficiently, we investigate two memoization methods. The first method, minBiGUL\\(_m\\), uses memoization, which improves the runtime of many BX programs by keeping intermediate results for later reuse. A disadvantage is the familiar tradeoff for keeping and searching values in a table. When inputs become large, the overhead increases and the effectiveness decreases. To deal with large inputs, we introduce the second method, xpg, that uses tupling, lazy update and lazy evaluation as optimizations. Lazy updates delay updates in closures and enables them to use them later. Both evaluation methods were fully implemented for minBiGUL. The experimental results show that our methods are faster than the original method of BiGUL for the non-right associative compositions.

Abstract:Bidirectional transformations between different data representations occur frequently in modern software systems. They appear as serializers and deserializers, as database views and view updaters, and more. Manually building bidirectional transformations---by writing two separate functions that are intended to be inverses---is tedious and error prone. A better approach is to use a domain-specific language in which both directions can be written as a single expression. However, these domain-specific languages can be difficult to program in, requiring programmers to manage fiddly details while working in a complex type system. To solve this, we present Optician, a tool for type-directed synthesis of bijective string transformers. The inputs to Optician are two ordinary regular expressions representing two data formats and a few concrete examples for disambiguation. The output is a well-typed program in Boomerang (a bidirectional language based on the theory of lenses). The main technical challenge involves navigating the vast program search space efficiently enough. Unlike most prior work on type-directed synthesis, our system operates in the context of a language with a rich equivalence relation on types (the theory of regular expressions). We synthesize terms of a equivalent language and convert those generated terms into our lens language. We prove the correctness of our synthesis algorithm. We also demonstrate empirically that our new language changes the synthesis problem from one that admits intractable solutions to one that admits highly efficient solutions. We evaluate Optician on a benchmark suite of 39 examples including both microbenchmarks and realistic examples derived from other data management systems including Flash Fill, a tool for synthesizing string transformations in spreadsheets, and Augeas, a tool for bidirectional processing of Linux system configuration files.

A Biologically Plausible Parser

Abstract:We describe a parser of English effectuated by biologically plausible neurons and synapses, and implemented through the Assembly Calculus, a recently proposed computational framework for cognitive function. We demonstrate that this device is capable of correctly parsing reasonably nontrivial sentences. While our experiments entail rather simple sentences in English, our results suggest that the parser can be extended beyond what we have implemented, to several directions encompassing much of language. For example, we present a simple Russian version of the parser, and discuss how to handle recursion, embedding, and polysemy.

Abstract:This paper has the goals (1) of unifying top-down parsing with shift-reduce parsing to yield a single simple and consistent framework, and (2) of producing provably correct parsing methods, deterministic as well as tabular ones, for extended context-free grammars (EBNF) represented as state-transition networks. Departing from the traditional way of presenting as independent algorithms the deterministic bottom-up LR(1), the top-down LL(1) and the general tabular (Earley) parsers, we unify them in a coherent minimalist framework. We present a simple general construction method for EBNF ELR(1) parsers, where the new category of convergence conflicts is added to the classical shift-reduce and reduce-reduce conflicts; we prove its correctness and show two implementations by deterministic push-down machines and by vector-stack machines, the latter to be also used for Earley parsers. Then the Beatty's theoretical characterization of LL(1) grammars is adapted to derive the extended ELL(1 parsing method, first by minimizing the ELR(1) parser and then by simplifying its state information. Through using the same notations in the ELR(1) case, the extended Earley parser is obtained. Since all the parsers operate on compatible representations, it is feasible to combine them into mixed mode algorithms.
A Java Library for Bidirectional XML Transformation

Abstract:We propose a Java library BiXJ for bidirectional XML transformation. The feature of BiXJ is that when writing one transformation, users can get its corresponding backward transformation for free. The transformations in this library adopt the native XML data model and concentrate on the widely accepted methods of constructing and destructing XML documents. By this design principle, we expect this library is expressive enough, and moreover it does not confuse the users due to providing too many transformations. The di‐culty in this work is to seek more suitable semantics for the bidirectional transformations since the semantics in the previous work is too limited to express both useful transformations (e.g., generating multiple elements) and updates . To demonstrate its usability and expressiveness, we have bidirectionalized some typical examples of XQuery and XSLT using this library. The results of these experiments are promising.

Abstract:The Dagstuhl BX seminar, held January 16–21, 2011, brought together researchers from 13 countries across disciplines that study bidirectional transformations. It was a follow-up of the GRACE International Meeting on Bidirectional Transformations held in December 2008 near Tokyo, Japan [5]. This consisted of short introductions from each of the participants on their background and work, followed by presentations and demonstrations on representative technologies from each field, and some open discussion time. A major benefit of the GRACE meeting was the opportunity for the disciplines to get some initial exposure to each other. The Dagstuhl seminar intended to go a step further and begin to identify commonalities between the disciplines and start to set a cross-disciplinary research agenda. The first part of the seminar consisted of tutorials from each of the four represented disciplines. The second part consisted of cross-disciplinary working groups dedicated to investigating specific examples of commonality between solutions or identifying requirements, terminology, or scenarios that may reach across fields. There were also sessions in which participants gave position statements on their own work. Participants at both the Dagstuhl and GRACE seminars came from four disciplines: (1) Programming Languages, (2) Graph Transformations, (3) Software Engineering, and (4) Databases. At Dagstuhl, each of the first three disciplines made up about 2/7 of the participants, while databases took the remaining 1/7 out of about 45 participants. Representation from the database field was, nevertheless, an improvement over the turnout from the GRACE meeting.
Bidirectional Programming and Software Adaptation: Towards a Happy Marriage.

Abstract:Bidirectional transformations and bidirectional programming have been attracting a lot of attention lately, both in the programming languages community, and in the software engineering community. As bidirectional programming languages are growing more mature, they are getting easier to use for software engineers, more efficient, and more reliable. The strongest argument in favor of bidirectional programming is its ability to provide a synchronization mechanisms between a source and a view, that is guaranteed to be correct by construction. On the other hand, software adaptation is an ability to adapt at run-time to changing user needs, system intrusions or faults, and changing operational environment. In this talk, we shall explain the essence of bidirectional transformation, introduce a powerful language for bidirectional programming, and show how bidirectional programming can provide a powerful mechanism to modularize adaptive software. This mechanism would be very useful not only for reusing a adaptive software for different target systems, but also for maintaining separation of concerns when developing complex adaptive software.
A Generic Scheme and Properties of Bidirectional Transformations

Abstract:The recent rise of interest in bidirectional transformations (BXs) has led to the development of many BX frameworks, originating in diverse computer science disciplines. From a user perspective, these frameworks vary significantly in both interface and predictability of the underlying bidirectionalization technique. In this paper we start by presenting a generic BX scheme that can be instantiated to different concrete interfaces, by plugging-in the desired notion of update and traceability. Based on that scheme, we then present several desirable generic properties that may characterize a BX framework, and show how they can be instantiated to concrete interfaces. This generic presentation is useful when exploring the BX design space: it might help developers when designing new frameworks and end-users when comparing existing ones. We support the latter claim, by applying it in a comparative survey of popular existing BX frameworks.

Abstract:Bidirectional transformations between different representations of related information appear frequently in many different areas like databases, software engineering, and programming languages. A bidirectional program expressing a bidirectional transformation includes a pair of programs - a get that defines a view over a source and a put that translates view updates to source updates - and provides strong guarantees about the well-behavedness of the get and the put. It is known to be challenging to develop bidirectional programs that are both well-behaved and practically useful. In this paper, we propose an approach to synthesizing well-behaved and practical bidirectional programs on relations from user-provided examples and data schemas. We start by synthesizing a get and decomposing it into a set of simple and atomic geta whose corresponding puta exists and thus reduce the synthesis of (get, put) into sub-synthesis of (geta, puta). Then, we solve each sub-synthesis task with a set of well-designed templates and combine all results to form the final bidirectional program. We have implemented our approach in a framework called SYNTHBX and evaluated it on a benchmark suite of 56 tasks from three sources. SYNTHBX successfully synthesizes well-behaved bidirectional programs for 52 tasks, with an average synthesis time of 19 seconds per task and within 3 seconds each for 37 of them, which shows practical usefulness of our approach.
"What Do You Mean by That?" A Parser-Independent Interactive Approach for Enhancing Text-to-SQL.

Abstract:In Natural Language Interfaces to Databases systems, the text-to-SQL technique allows users to query databases by using natural language questions. Though significant progress in this area has been made recently, most parsers may fall short when they are deployed in real systems. One main reason stems from the difficulty of fully understanding the users' natural language questions. In this paper, we include human in the loop and present a novel parser-independent interactive approach (PIIA) that interacts with users using multi-choice questions and can easily work with arbitrary parsers. Experiments were conducted on two cross-domain datasets, the WikiSQL and the more complex Spider, with five state-of-the-art parsers. These demonstrated that PIIA is capable of enhancing the text-to-SQL performance with limited interaction turns by using both simulation and human evaluation.

TiBiX: Leveraging Temporal Information for Bidirectional X-ray and Report Generation

Abstract:With the emergence of vision language models in the medical imaging domain, numerous studies have focused on two dominant research activities: (1) report generation from Chest X-rays (CXR), and (2) synthetic scan generation from text or reports. Despite some research incorporating multi-view CXRs into the generative process, prior patient scans and reports have been generally disregarded. This can inadvertently lead to the leaving out of important medical information, thus affecting generation quality. To address this, we propose TiBiX: Leveraging Temporal information for Bidirectional X-ray and Report Generation. Considering previous scans, our approach facilitates bidirectional generation, primarily addressing two challenging problems: (1) generating the current image from the previous image and current report and (2) generating the current report based on both the previous and current images. Moreover, we extract and release a curated temporal benchmark dataset derived from the MIMIC-CXR dataset, which focuses on temporal data. Our comprehensive experiments and ablation studies explore the merits of incorporating prior CXRs and achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) results on the report generation task. Furthermore, we attain on-par performance with SOTA image generation efforts, thus serving as a new baseline in longitudinal bidirectional CXR-to-report generation. The code is available at
