Abstract:This paper is driven by a simple question of whether traffic engineering in Software Defined Networking (SDN) can react quickly to bursty and unpredictable changes in traffic demand. The key challenge is to strike a careful balance between the overhead (frequently involving the SDN controller) and performance (the degree of congestion measured as the maximum load and the balance between the minimum and the maximum loads). Exploiting OpenFlow (OF) features, quick shift of routing paths for unpredictable traffic bursty is the focal point of this work. It is achieved by using a dual routing scheme and letting the data plane to select the appropriate path in reacting to uncertainty in traffic load. The proposed work is called DUCE (Demand Uncertainty Configuration sElection). Further, we describe a traffic distribution model, an optimization solution that calculates congestion-free traffic distribution plan which guarantees that each switch can select one of the paths in a distributed way, and moreover, OF details about detaching the functionality of responding to the demand uncertainty from the control plane and delegating it to the data plane. Simulations are performed validating the efficiency of DUCE under various network scenarios.

Abstract:software-defined networking (SDN) separates the control plane and the data plane ,and this kind of separation can achieve flexible control via deploying fine-grained rules on the flow tables in switches ,while potentially improving the utilization of network bandwidth .With the development of SDN ,more and more campus and enterprise network begin to deploy network based on SDN .During this procedure ,SDN has encountered some problems which don't exist in the traditional IP netw ork . For example ,some protocols used in the existing IP network are subject to great challenge in SDN based network ,such as TCP ,which is the most basic protocol in TCP/IP network .First ,we make a penetrating analysis on the working mechanism of SDN ,and three examples are given to illustrate that it is quite possible to generate large volume of Packet-In messages even in proactive mode . Then experiments are carried out and the results show that the end-to-end TCP connections have experienced a large delay caused by the SDN unique operations such as re-organizing of rules in TCAM and fast Packet-In message generating .In the worst case ,the delay caused by the reordering of the rules can reach up to 10 seconds when the TCAM contains 4000 flow entries in our experiments . Based on the experimental results ,we highlight two major problems when applying traditional TCP protocol in SDN networks :one is that it is hard to establish the connection ,and the other is the transmission inefficiency .Through the analysis of the experimental results ,we propose the possible direction to solve TCP inefficiency issue in SDN .
Achieving Real-Time Quality of Service with Software Defined Networking

Abstract:In traditional networks, Quality of Service (QoS) has been a challenge due to the lack of global knowledge and a large amount of data to process at each device. This issue becomes much harder when we want to manage real-time QoS. As an innovative network paradigm, Software Defined Network (SDN) enables a centralized network control and a global view of network states. Meanwhile, the online algorithm can accommodate with unknown inputs in any coming sequence and provides a worst-case guarantee for the performances even compared with the off-line optimal result. In this paper, we utilize SDN and online algorithms to achieve real-time QoS in networks. By applying Primal-Dual techniques and the potential function method with phase partitions, we design two online algorithms that achieve real-time QoS and network load balancing at the same time with competitive ratios of log(D) and log(n) respectively (D is the network diameter and n is the node number). The simulations also support our theoretical analyses.

Abstract:To enable the network softwarization, network function virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) are integrated to jointly manage and utilize the network resource and virtualized network functions (VNFs). For a network flow resulting from any NFV application, an associated switch would send a routing request to the controller in SDN. The controller then generates and configures a routing path to dynamically steer the flow across appropriate VNFs or service function chains. This process, however, exhibits a skew distribution of response latency with a long tail. Cutting the long-tail latency of response is critical to enable the network softwarization, yet difficult to achieve due to many factors, such as the limited capacities and the load imbalance among controllers. In this paper, we reveal that such flow requests still experience the long-tail response latency, even using the up-to-date controller-to-switch assignment mechanism. To tackle this essential problem, we first propose a light-weight and load-aware switch-to-controller selection scheme to cut the long-tail response latency under the simple scenario of homogeneous controllers, and then design a general delay-aware switch-to-controller selection scheme to fundamentally cut the long-tail response latency for the more complicated heterogeneous controller scenario with performance fluctuations. The comprehensive evaluations indicate that our two new switch-to-controller selection schemes can significantly reduce the long-tail latency and provide higher system throughput.

Abstract:Datacenters are the cornerstone of the big data infrastructure supporting numerous online services. The demand for interactivity, which significantly impacts user experience and provider revenue, is translated into stringent timing requirements for flows in datacenter networks. Thus low latency networking is becoming a major concern of both industry and academia. We provide a short survey of recent progress made by the networking community for low latency datacenter networks. We propose a taxonomy to categorize existing work based on four main techniques, reducing queue length, accelerating retransmissions, prioritizing mice flows, and exploiting multi-path. Then we review select papers, highlight the principal ideas, and discuss their pros and cons. We also present our perspectives of the research challenges and opportunities, hoping to aspire more future work in this space.

Abstract:The contemporary Internet has evolved from an academic infrastructure to a tremendous commercial network, serving as an indispensable information platform for human communications, but with inherent limitations such as complicated management and manual configuration. To overcome these limitations, the basic Internet architecture has unleashed an unprecedented wave of innovation over the past decade, and introduced a promising networking paradigm, software-defined networking (SDN), often referred to as a "radical new idea in networking." SDN offers numerous potential benefits such as enhanced configuration, improved performance, and encouraged innovation in network architectures and operations, while undergoing unprecedented challenges due to the lack of global network-wide information. Nowadays, the emerging data-driven thought opens the era of the fourth paradigm for science research and transfers the design philosophy of future networks, based on the large-scale data rather than the small-scale data. We argue that the existence of a data-driven information plane in SDN can address these challenges. In this article, we explicitly propose a data-driven information plane and extend the SDN architecture specifically. We first overview the evolution of SDN, and then illustrate a novel SDN paradigm by introducing a data-driven information plane into the commonly accepted SDN reference architecture. Finally, we outline emerging challenges and discuss future directions for further research triggered by a data-driven information plane.

Abstract:With the advent of delay-sensitive applications and ultra-low latency scenarios,research on low-latency networking is attracting attention from academia,industry,and standards organizations.Understanding the causes of latency and designing corresponding techniques to reduce latency enable the development of emerging applications.The sources of latency according to the layered architecture of the network was analyzed,and summarizes the techniques for reducing the latency.After that,three typical low-latency key scenarios and delay optimization techniques for data center network,5G and edge computing was analyzed.Finally,the opportunities and challenges that may be encountered in the development of low latency networks were presented from the perspectives of network architecture innovation,data-driven latency optimization algorithm and the design of new protocols.

Abstract:Many communities have researched the application of novel network architectures such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to build the future Internet. Another emerging technology which is big data analysis has also won lots of attentions from academia to industry. Many splendid researches have been done on CCN, SDN, and big data, which all have addressed separately in the traditional literature. In this paper, we propose a novel network paradigm to jointly consider CCN, SDN, and big data, and provide the architecture internal data flow, big data processing and use cases which indicate the benefits and applicability. Simulation results are exhibited to show the potential benefits relating to the proposed network paradigm. We refer to this novel paradigm as Data-Driven Networking (DDN).

Abstract:Decoupling of control and data plane in Software Define Networks (SDN) creates significant flexibility in network management. As networks are evolving into a complex multi-domain multi-layer architecture, traffic engineering across multiple domains and layers entails challenges for the control plane, especially when each separate administrative domain does not disclose their network topology and resource information. In this paper, we present a hierarchical controller design over multidomain and multi-layer networks, by adopting a root controller at the top layer. We allow to aggregate network topology and QoS information into a hierarchical Network Information Base (NIB) for the confidentiality concern. Then, we devise a communication protocol, which enables controllers at different layers and domains to work collaboratively on bandwidth allocation by reading to the hierarchical NIB. We also present an improved traffic engineering algorithm by considering bandwidth and delay simultaneously, to maximize the network utilization while respecting max-min fairness. Experiments on a 717-switches 5-domain network topology demonstrate that our proposal could drive the link utilization ratio to more than 85%.

Abstract:The limited computation resource of the centralized controller and communication bandwidth between the control and data planes become the bottleneck in forwarding the packets in Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Denial of Service (DoS) attacks based on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) can exhaust the resources of the control plane and overload the infrastructure of SDN networks. To mitigate TCP DoS attacks, DoSDefender is proposed as an efficient kernel-mode TCP DoS prevention framework in the data plane for SDN. It can prevent TCP DoS attacks from entering SDN by verifying the validity of the attempts to establish a TCP connection from the source, migrating the connection, and relaying the packets between the source and the destination in kernel space. DoSDefender conforms to the de facto standard SDN protocol, the OpenFlow policy, which requires no additional devices and no modifications in the control plane. Experimental results show that DoSDefender can effectively prevent TCP DoS attacks in low computing consumption while maintaining low connection delay and high packet forwarding throughput.

Abstract:In recent years, Data Center Networks (DCN) have become a very popular platform for hosting various online services and applications, such as e-commerce, social networking, large-scale computing, and web searching due to their cost-effective and efficient service provisioning. DCN, online services, and applications typically require minimal latency in any information exchange. Moreover, compared with Internet traffic, the nature of traffic in DCN is bursty, delay, and throughput sensitive. Due to this reason, state-of-the-art TCP congestion control algorithms perform poorly and suffer from the problems, such as TCP Incast, TCP Outcast, Pseudo-Congestion Effect, Buffer pressure, and Queue build-up. For improving the performance of DCN, in recent years, various congestion control algorithms have been proposed for DCN. This paper summarizes the reason why the state-of-the-art TCP congestion control algorithm performs poorly and presents an overview of the recently proposed congestion control algorithms for DCN, followed by a comparative summary of their performance.
Dual Channel Adaptive Congestion Control For Datacenters

Abstract:An ideal datacenter network congestion control mechanism should provide zero packet loss, full link capacity utilization, zero buffer occupancy as well as fast fairness convergence. Most of the existing congestion control protocols employ the responsive control approach (control after congestion occurs), which are hard to simultaneously satisfy these conflicting goals. Addressing this issue, this paper presents a novel end-to-end datacenter congestion control approach, named SCP (Stand-in Control Protocol). Different with the existing solutions, SCP realizes the preventive congestion control - control before congestion occurs. SCP configures and logically partitions a physical link into control and data channels. Before sending real data packets in the data channel, SCP sends stand-in packets in the control channel to detect the path condition. Based on the preview results of the control channel detections, SCP ensures that the data channel is never congested yet approaches maximum throughput; thus zero packet loss, full utilization and zero buffer occupancy are simultaneously satisfied in the data channel. Moreover, SCP employs an adaptive online learning rate adjustment algorithm to achieve fast convergence. The adaptive learning algorithm can be automatically adjusted to any datacenter environment without any fundamental assumptions. Extensive experiments shows that SCP outperforms some existing lossless congestion control protocols and SCP's novel design makes itself can be applied not only in the datacenters but also in the WAN (Wide Area Network) scenarios.

Abstract:TCP performance in lossy networks with both congestion loss and non-congestion loss is analyzed, from which the TCP throughput, delay and packet loss rate are derived. Also, a polling scheme and punishing scheme are proposed to provide QoS guarantee for diverse user requirement. Simulation results show that the polling scheme can get higher throughput, while the punishing scheme can achieve better fairness.

Abstract:Data center network operators have to continually monitor path latency to quickly detect and re-route traffic away from high-delay path segments. Existing latency monitoring techniques in data centers rely on either (1) actively sending probes from end-hosts, which is restricted in some cases and can only measure end-to-end latencies, or (2) passively capturing and aggregating traffic on network devices, which requires hardware modifications.In this work, we explore another opportunity for network path latency monitoring, enabled by software-defined networking. We propose SLAM, a latency monitoring framework that dynamically sends specific probe packets to trigger control messages from the first and last switches of a path to a centralized controller. SLAM then estimates the latency distribution along a path based on the arrival timestamps of the control messages at the controller. Our experiments show that the latency distributions estimated by SLAM are sufficiently accurate to enable the detection of latency spikes and the selection of low-latency paths in a data center.

Abstract:As cloud computing advances, datacenter networks (DCNs) face unprecedented pressure due to the increasing prevalence of high bandwidth and low delay applications. Current reliable transmission protocols such as TCP harness packet loss, network delay, and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) for congestion control, aiming to maintain low latency and high throughput. We investigate the efficacy of ECN-based protocols against incast congestion in one-hop networks and delay-based protocols for maintaining low end-to-end delay in multi-hop networks, at the expense of throughput fairness. Thus, we introduce a novel TCP protocol, Dual Congestion Control Signals (DCCS), merging ECN and delay signals for a broader congestion control mechanism. DCCS effectively handles burst traffic, prevents packet loss, ensures low end-to-end delay, and resolves throughput unfairness by determining a precise minimum round-trip time (RTT) for each flow through a drain signal. Simulations on ns-3 confirm that DCCS surpasses ECN-based (i.e., DCTCP), delay-based (i.e., DC-Vegas and Swift), and hybrid-based protocols (i.e., EAR) in fat-tree topology under realistic workload, cutting down Flow Completion Time (FCT) by 3.8%–20.5%. This substantiates DCCS's competency in providing high-quality service for DCNs.

Flow-Level Traffic Scheduling in Data Center Networks

Abstract:Based on software-defined networking (SDN), many online service providers deploy novel online traffic engineering (TE) schemes in their data center networks. The online TE epoch usually ranges from several hundred milliseconds to a few minutes, which is shorter than the duration of some flows. These flows may suffer inconsistent quality-of-service (QoS) between TE epochs, which leads to degradation in flow utility functions and the total network utility. Although effective in packet-level QoS improvement, conventional TCP variants and queueing designs cannot address the QoS inconsistency since flow-level information, including flow service history and flow utility function, is not considered. This paper proposes a flow-level traffic scheduling (FLTS) method to improve flow QoS consistency and network utility. We propose a flow measurement mechanism that factors the service history and residual demand into the flow priorities. For background flows, we establish a G/G/1 queueing model in traffic sources and propose a traffic rate control mechanism to minimize the queueing time. Simulation results demonstrate that FLTS outperforms two typical conventional approaches with an 18% to 29% improvement in network utility under heavy traffic loads.
On Denial of Service Attacks in Software Defined Networks

Abstract:Software defined networking greatly simplifies network management by decoupling control functions from the network data plane. However, such a decoupling also opens SDN to various denial of service attacks: an adversary can easily exhaust network resources by flooding short-lived spoofed flows. Toward this issue, we present a comprehensive study of DoS attacks in SDN, and propose multi-layer fair queueing (MLFQ), a simple but effective DoS mitigation method. MLFQ enforces fair sharing of an SDN controller's resources with multiple layers of queues, which can dynamically expand and aggregate according to controller load. Both testbed-based and emulation-based experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of MLFQ in mitigating DoS attacks targeted at SDN controllers.

Abstract:Many cloud applications in modern data centers are very demanding on latency, thus researchers have paid much attention to building a data center network with ultra-low latency, even deterministic low latency. Motivated by this research trend, this article focuses on effective latency reduction designs, which mainly aim at reducing the queuing delay in switches. We first summarize a development roadmap to give an overview of the three developing stages of existing schemes, and point out the essential difference between these stages is the amount of traffic information maintained by the control nodes. After briefly reviewing the features and deployment complexity of recent advances, we map them to three stages, introducing their design principles and identifying the problems they target at. Finally, we present the challenges and opportunities for future work.

Abstract:Congestion control is an indispensable mechanism in the new trend of enhanced Ethernet as a unified fabric for traditional LAN, SAN, and high-performance computing networks. A congestion management framework for Converged Ethernet (CE) networks has been standardized by IEEE 802.1 Qau work group, and QCN is recommended as the congestion control scheme in the standard draft. QCN is heuristically designed for 1/10Gbps Ethernet without considering the impact of delays. Recent work find that QCN will encounter stability issues with feedback delays, and these issues will be more serious as Ethernet extends to 40/100Gbps and the delays become heterogeneous and time-varying. This work aims to mitigate the negative impact of delays on congestion control scheme in CE. Specially, considering the delays are heterogeneous and time-varying, we build a model for Converged Ethernet with the standard congestion management framework. The model provides a new congestion detector to estimate the real congestion status under the impact of delays and regards the heterogeneous and time-varying feature as disturbances. Leveraging the new congestion detector and tolerating the disturbance through the sliding mode control method, we design the Delay-tolerant Sliding Mode (DSM) congestion control scheme. Extensive simulations show that DSM outperforms other congestion control schemes when the Ethernet ranges from 1Gbps to 100Gbps and the delays are heterogeneous and time-varying.
