Abstract:Motivated by recent extensive studies on Wenger graphs, we introduce a new infinite class of bipartite graphs of a similar type, called linearized Wenger graphs. The spectrum, diameter and girth of these linearized Wenger graphs are determined.

Abstract:Let $n\ge 1$ be an integer and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of characteristic $p$ with $q$ elements. In this paper, it is proved that the Wenger graph $W_n(q)$ and linearized Wenger graph $L_m(q)$ are edge-girth-regular $(v,k,g,\lambda)$-graphs, and the parameter $\lambda$ of graphs $W_n(q)$ and $L_m(q)$ is completely determined. Here, an edge-girth-regular graph $egr(v,k,g,\lambda)$ means a $k$-regular graph of order $v$ and girth $g$ satisfying that any edge is contained in $\lambda$ distinct $g$-cycles. As a direct corollary, we obtain the number of girth cycles of graph $W_n(q)$, and the lower bounds on the generalized Turán numbers $ex(n, C_{6}, \mathscr{C}_{5})$ and $ex(n, C_{8}, \mathscr{C}_{7})$, where $C_k$ is the cycle of length $k$ and $\mathscr{C}_k = \{C_3, C_4, \dots , C_k\}$.Moreover, there exist a family of $egr(2q^3,q,8,(q-1)^3(q-2))$-graphs for $q$ odd, and the order of graph $W_2(q)$ and extremal $egr(v,q,8,(q-1)^3(q-2))$-graph have same asymptotic order for $q$ odd.

Logarithmic Weisfeiler-Leman Identifies All Planar Graphs

Abstract:The Weisfeiler-Leman (WL) algorithm is a well-known combinatorial procedure for detecting symmetries in graphs and it is widely used in graph-isomorphism tests. It proceeds by iteratively refining a colouring of vertex tuples. The number of iterations needed to obtain the final output is crucial for the parallelisability of the algorithm. We show that there is a constant k such that every planar graph can be identified (that is, distinguished from every non-isomorphic graph) by the k-dimensional WL algorithm within a logarithmic number of iterations. This generalises a result due to Verbitsky (STACS 2007), who proved the same for 3-connected planar graphs. The number of iterations needed by the k-dimensional WL algorithm to identify a graph corresponds to the quantifier depth of a sentence that defines the graph in the (k+1)-variable fragment C^{k+1} of first-order logic with counting quantifiers. Thus, our result implies that every planar graph is definable with a C^{k+1}-sentence of logarithmic quantifier depth.

Abstract:In 2010, Vukičević introduced an new graph invariant, the inverse sum indeg index of a graph, which has been studied due to its wide range of applications. Let Bnd be the class of bipartite graphs of order n and diameter d. In this paper, we mainly characterize the bipartite graphs in Bnd with the maximal inverse sum indeg index. Bipartite graphs with the largest, second-largest, and smallest inverse sum indeg indexes are also completely characterized.

Abstract:We construct infinite families of graphs that are determined by their generalized spectrum. This construction is based on new formulae for the determinant of the walk matrix of a graph. All graphs constructed here satisfy a certain extremal divisibility condition for the determinant of their walk matrix.
Linear Size Universal Point Sets for Classes of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A finite set $P$ of points in the plane is $n$-universal with respect to a class $\mathcal{C}$ of planar graphs if every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{C}$ admits a crossing-free straight-line drawing with vertices at points of $P$. For the class of all planar graphs the best known upper bound on the size of a universal point set is quadratic and the best known lower bound is linear in $n$. Some classes of planar graphs are known to admit universal point sets of near linear size, however, there are no truly linear bounds for interesting classes beyond outerplanar graphs. In this paper, we show that there is a universal point set of size $2n-2$ for the class of bipartite planar graphs with $n$ vertices. The same point set is also universal for the class of $n$-vertex planar graphs of maximum degree $3$. The point set used for the results is what we call an exploding double chain, and we prove that this point set allows planar straight-line embeddings of many more planar graphs, namely of all subgraphs of planar graphs admitting a one-sided Hamiltonian cycle. The result for bipartite graphs also implies that every $n$-vertex plane graph has a $1$-bend drawing all whose bends and vertices are contained in a specific point set of size $4n-6$, this improves a bound of $6n-10$ for the same problem by Löffler and Tóth.

On A Linear Fused Gromov-Wasserstein Distance For Graph Structured Data

Abstract:We present a framework for embedding graph structured data into a vector space, taking into account node features and structures of graphs into the optimal transport (OT) problem. Then we propose a novel distance between two graphs, named LinearFGW , defined as the Euclidean distance between their embeddings. The advantages of the proposed distance are twofold: 1) it takes into account node features and structures of graphs for measuring the dissimilarity between graphs in a kernel-based framework, 2) it is more efficient for computing a kernel matrix than pairwise OT-based distances, particularly fused Gromov-Wasserstein [1], making it possible to deal with large-scale data sets. Our theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that our proposed distance leads to an increase in performance compared to the existing state-of-the-art graph distances when evaluated on graph classification and clustering tasks.

A coarse geometric approach to graph layout problems

Abstract:We define a range of new coarse geometric invariants based on various graph-theoretic measures of complexity for finite graphs, including: treewidth, pathwidth, cutwidth, search number, topological bandwidth, bandwidth, minimal linear arrangment, sumcut, profile, vertex and edge separation. We prove that, for bounded degree graphs, these invariants can be used to define functions which satisfy a strong monotonicity property, namely they are monotonically non-decreasing with respect to regular maps, and as such have potential applications in coarse geometry and geometric group theory. On the graph-theoretic side, we prove asymptotically optimal upper bounds on the treewidth, pathwidth, cutwidth, search number, topological bandwidth, vertex separation, edge separation, minimal linear arrangement, sumcut and profile for the family of all finite subgraphs of any bounded degree graph whose separation profile is known to be of the form $r^a\log(r)^b$ for some $a>0$. This large class includes the Diestel-Leader graph, all Cayley graphs of non-virtually cyclic polycyclic groups, uniform lattices in almost all connected unimodular Lie groups, and certain hyperbolic groups.

The PWLR Graph Representation: A Persistent Weisfeiler-Lehman scheme with Random Walks for Graph Classification

Abstract:This paper presents the Persistent Weisfeiler-Lehman Random walk scheme (abbreviated as PWLR) for graph representations, a novel mathematical framework which produces a collection of explainable low-dimensional representations of graphs with discrete and continuous node features. The proposed scheme effectively incorporates normalized Weisfeiler-Lehman procedure, random walks on graphs, and persistent homology. We thereby integrate three distinct properties of graphs, which are local topological features, node degrees, and global topological invariants, while preserving stability from graph perturbations. This generalizes many variants of Weisfeiler-Lehman procedures, which are primarily used to embed graphs with discrete node labels. Empirical results suggest that these representations can be efficiently utilized to produce comparable results to state-of-the-art techniques in classifying graphs with discrete node labels, and enhanced performances in classifying those with continuous node features.

Graphs with at Most One Generalized Cospectral Mate

Abstract:Let G be an n-vertex graph with adjacency matrix A, and W = [e, Ae, ... , An-1e] be the walk matrix of G, where e is the all-one vector. In Wang [J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 122 (2017): 438-451], the author showed that any graph G is uniquely determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS) whenever 2- left perpendicular n/2] det W is odd and square-free. In this paper, we introduce a large family of graphsFn = {n-vertex graphs G: 2- left perpendicular n/2] det W = p2b and rank W = n - 1 over Z/pZ},where b is odd and square-free, p is an odd prime and p does not divide b. We prove that any graph in Fn either is DGS or has exactly one generalized cospectral mate up to isomor-phism. Moreover, we show that the problem of finding the generalized cospectral mate for a graph in Fn is equivalent to that of generating an appropriate rational orthogonal matrix from a given integral vector. This equivalence essentially depends on a surprising property of graphs in terms of generalized spectra, which states that any symmetric integral matrix generalized cospectral with the adjacency matrix of some graph must be an adjacency matrix. Based on this equivalence, we develop an efficient algorithm to decide whether a given graph in Fn is DGS and further to find the unique generalized cospectral mate when it is not. We give some experimental results on graphs with at most 20 vertices, which suggest that Fn may have a posi-tive density (nearly 3%) and possibly almost all graphs in Fn are DGS as n -> infinity. This gives supporting evidence for Haemers' conjecture that almost all graphs are determined by their spectra.
Generalized Word-Representable Graphs

Abstract:The literature on word-representable graphs is quite rich, and a number of variations of the original definition have been proposed over the years. We are initiating a systematic study of such variations based on formal languages. In our framework, we can associate a graph class to each language over the binary alphabet \{0,1\}. All graph classes that are language-representable in this sense are hereditary and enjoy further common properties. Besides word-representable graphs and, more generally, 1^k- or k-11-representable graphs, we can identify many more graph classes in our framework, like (co)bipartite graphs, (co)comparability graphs, to name a few. It was already known that any graph is 111- or 2-11-representable. When such representations are considered for storing graphs, 111- or 2-11-representability bears the disadvantage of being significantly inferior to standard adjacency matrices or lists. We prove that quite famous languages like the palindromes, the copy language or the Lyndon words can match the efficiency of standard graph representations. The perspective of language theory allows us to prove general results that hold for all graph classes that can be defined in this way. This includes certain closure properties (e.g., all language-definable graph classes are hereditary) as well as certain limitations (e.g., all language-representable graph classes contain graphs of arbitrarily large treewidth and of arbitrarily large degeneracy, except a trivial case). As each language describes a graph class, we can also ask decidability questions concerning graph classes, given a concrete presentation of a formal language. We also present a systematic study of graph classes that can be represented by languages in which each letter occurs at most twice. Here, we find graph classes like interval, permutation, circle, bipartite chain, convex, and threshold graphs.

Abstract:A type of directed multigraph called a W-digraph is introduced to model the structure of certain representations of Hecke algebras, including those constructed by Lusztig and Vogan from involutions in a Weyl group. Building on results of Lusztig, a complete characterization of W-digraphs is given in terms of subdigraphs for dihedral parabolic subgroups. Graph-theoretic properties of W-digraphs are established including, under certain assumptions, acyclicity. In case the Coxeter system is finite, a bound on the number of vertices of a connected W-digraph is obtained, and a graph-theoretic version of the usual duality operation is obtained.

A $(1 + {\varepsilon})$-Embedding of Low Highway Dimension Graphs into Bounded Treewidth Graphs

Abstract:Graphs with bounded highway dimension were introduced by Abraham et al. [SODA 2010] as a model of transportation networks. We show that any such graph can be embedded into a distribution over bounded treewidth graphs with arbitrarily small distortion. More concretely, given a weighted graph G = (V, E) of constant highway dimension, we show how to randomly compute a weighted graph H = (V, E') that distorts shortest path distances of G by at most a 1 + ${\varepsilon}$ factor in expectation, and whose treewidth is polylogarithmic in the aspect ratio of G. Our probabilistic embedding implies quasi-polynomial time approximation schemes for a number of optimization problems that naturally arise in transportation networks, including Travelling Salesman, Steiner Tree, and Facility Location. To construct our embedding for low highway dimension graphs we extend Talwar's [STOC 2004] embedding of low doubling dimension metrics into bounded treewidth graphs, which generalizes known results for Euclidean metrics. We add several non-trivial ingredients to Talwar's techniques, and in particular thoroughly analyse the structure of low highway dimension graphs. Thus we demonstrate that the geometric toolkit used for Euclidean metrics extends beyond the class of low doubling metrics.

Abstract:We can define six classes of endomorphisms on a graph, and they always form a chain based on set inclusion. The concepts of endomorphism type and endomorphism spectrum were introduced by Böttcher and Knauer in 1992. They provided a systematic and organized approach to study endomorphisms of graphs. In this paper, we focus on the double vertex wheel graphs and provide a detailed description of their endomorphism spectra and endomorphism types.

Abstract:A linear graph code is a family C of graphs on n vertices with the property that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two graphs in C is also the edge set of a graph in C. In this article, we investigate the maximal size of a linear graph code that does not contain a copy of a fixed graph H . In particular, we show that if H has an even number of edges, the size of the code is O(2n2/logn) , making progress on a question of Alon. Furthermore, we show that for almost all graphs H with an even number of edges, there exists εH>0 such that the size of a linear graph code without a copy of H is at most 2n2/nεH .

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be Ramsey size-linear if $r(G,H) =O_G (e(H))$ for every graph $H$ with no isolated vertices. Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp observed that $K_4$ is not Ramsey size-linear, but each of its proper subgraphs is, and they asked whether there exist infinitely many such graphs. In this short note, we answer this question in the affirmative.

Abstract:In this paper, we showcase the class XNLP as a natural place for many hard problems parameterized by linear width measures. This strengthens existing W [1]-hardness proofs for these problems, since XNLP-hardness implies W [ t ]-hardness for all t . It also indicates, via a conjecture by Pilipczuk and Wrochna (ACM Trans Comput Theory 9:1–36, 2018), that any XP algorithm for such problems is likely to require XP space. In particular, we show XNLP-completeness for natural problems parameterized by pathwidth, linear clique-width, and linear mim-width. The problems we consider are Independent Set , Dominating Set , Odd Cycle Transversal , ( q -)Coloring , Max Cut , Maximum Regular Induced Subgraph , Feedback Vertex Set , Capacitated (Red-Blue) Dominating Set , Capacitated Vertex Cover and Bipartite Bandwidth .

A generalized Weisfeiler-Lehman graph kernel

Abstract:After more than one decade, Weisfeiler-Lehman graph kernels are still among the most prevalent graph kernels due to their remarkable predictive performance and time complexity. They are based on a fast iterative partitioning of vertices, originally designed for deciding graph isomorphism with one-sided error. The Weisfeiler-Lehman graph kernels retain this idea and compare such labels with respect to equality. This binary valued comparison is, however, arguably too rigid for defining suitable graph kernels for certain graph classes. To overcome this limitation, we propose a generalization of Weisfeiler-Lehman graph kernels which takes into account a more natural and finer grade of similarity between Weisfeiler-Lehman labels than equality. We show that the proposed similarity can be calculated efficiently by means of the Wasserstein distance between certain vectors representing Weisfeiler-Lehman labels. This and other facts give rise to the natural choice of partitioning the vertices with the Wasserstein k-means algorithm. We empirically demonstrate on the Weisfeiler-Lehman subtree kernel, which is one of the most prominent Weisfeiler-Lehman graph kernels, that our generalization significantly outperforms this and other state-of-the-art graph kernels in terms of predictive performance on datasets which contain structurally more complex graphs beyond the typically considered molecular graphs.

Abstract:The wide diameter of a graph is a natural generalization of diameter in a graph when we take account of the connectivity of the graph. In this paper, we define the generalized wide diameter of a graph and show that every k-regular k-connected graph on n vertices has generalized k-diameter at most n/2 and this upper bound cannot be improved when n = 4k - 6 + i(2k - 4).

Abstract:Zarankiewicz proposed the problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an (n, m)-bipartite graph containing no complete bipartite graph K-a,K-b. In this paper, we consider a variant of Zarankiewicz's problem and determine the maximum number of edges of an (n, m)-bipartite graph without containing a linear forest consisting of even paths. Moveover, all these extremal graphs are characterized in a recursion way.

Abstract:A graph $G$ of constant link $L$ is a graph in which the neighborhood of any vertex induces a graph isomorphic to $L$. Given two different graphs, $H$ and $G$, the induced Turán number ${\rm ex}(n; H, G{\rm -ind})$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph having no subgraph isomorphic to $H$ and no copy from $G$ as an induced subgraph. Our main motivation in this paper is to establish a bridge between graphs with constant link and induced Turán numbers via the class of $t$-regular, $k$-uniform (linear) hypergraphs of girth at least $4$, as well as to present several methods of constructing connected graphs with constant link. We show that, for integers $t \geq 3$ and $k \geq 3$, ${\rm ex}(n; C_k, K_{1,t}{\rm -ind}) \leq (k - 2)(t - 1)n/2$ and that equality holds for infinitely many values of $n$. This result is built upon the existence of graphs with constant link $tL$ with restricted cycle length, which we prove in another theorem. More precisely, we show that, given a graph $F$ with constant link $L$ and circumference $c$, then, for all integers $t \geq 2$ and $g > c$, there exists a graph with constant link $tL$ which is free of cycles of length $l$, for all $c < l < g$. We provide two proofs of this result using distinct approaches. We further present constructions of graphs with constant links $tL$, $t \geq 2$, and restricted cycle length based on Steiner Systems. Finally, starting from a connected graph of constant link $tL$, for $t \geq 2$, having order $n$ and restricted cycle lengths, we provide a method to construct an infinite collection of connected graphs of constant link $tL$ that preserves the cycle length restriction, and whose orders form an arithmetic progression $qn$, $q \geq 1$.
