Abstract:Cabled ocean networks with tree or ring topologies play an important role in real-time ocean exploration. Due to the time-consuming need for field maintenance, cable switching technology that can actively switch the power on/off on certain branches of the network becomes essential for enhancing the reliability and availability of the network. In this paper, a novel switching-control method is proposed, in which we invert the power transmission polarity and use the current on the power line as the digital signal at low frequency to broadcast information with the address and commands to the network, and the corresponding branching unit (BU) can decode and execute the switching commands. The cable's parasitic parameters, the network scale, and the number of BUs, as the influencing factors of the communication frequency on the power line, are theoretically studied and simulated. An optimized frequency that balances the executing accuracy and rate is calculated and proved on a simulated prototype. The results showed that the cable switching technology with optimized frequency can enhance the switching accuracy and configuring rate.

Abstract:Electric power telecommunication network requires a network synchronization environment with high stability,accuracy,reliability and security.By studying power system clock synchronization network planning,a power system clock synchronization network planning algorithm based on the minimum spanning tree is presented.The algorithm is designed for the single clock source network,aiming to minimize the transferred layers and the transmission distance.The best path is determined by a two-stage optimization based on the minimum spanning tree theory and the layer optimization method.The algorithm is fast,efficient and quite suitable for the solution of large scaled clock synchronization network.

Abstract:Let G=(V,E,w) be an undirected graph with nonnegative edge length function w and nonnegative vertex weight function r. The optimal product-requirement communication spanning tree (PROCT) problem is to find a spanning tree T minimizing ∑u,v∈Vr(u)r(v)dT(u,v), where dT(u,v) is the length of the path between u and v on T. The optimal sum-requirement communication spanning tree (SROCT) problem is to find a spanning tree T such that ∑u,v∈V(r(u)+r(v))dT(u,v) is minimized. Both problems are special cases of the optimum communication spanning tree problem, and are reduced to the minimum routing cost spanning tree (MRCT) problem when all the vertex weights are equal to each other. In this paper, we present an O(n5)-time 1.577-approximation algorithm for the PROCT problem, and an O(n3) time 2-approximation algorithm for the SROCT problem, where n is the number of vertices. We also show that a 1.577-approximation solution for the MRCT problem can be obtained in O(n3)-time, which improves the time complexity of the previous result.

Abstract:Given an undirected graph with nonnegative edge lengths and nonnegative vertex weights, the routing requirement of a pair of vertices is assumed to be the product of their weights. The routing cost for a pair of vertices on a given spanning tree is defined as the length of the path between them multiplied by their routing requirement. The optimal product-requirement communication spanning tree is the spanning tree with minimum total routing cost summed over all pairs of vertices. This problem arises in network design and computational biology. For the special case that all vertex weights are identical, it has been shown that the problem is NP-hard and that there is a polynomial time approximation scheme for it. In this paper we show that the generalized problem also admits a polynomial time approximation scheme.

Abstract:The standard spanning tree protocol is frequently employed in a bridged network in order to deactivate redundant network connections and is intended for private local area network. Cable TV network is one of the most popular broadband access network based on cable modem technology. As a public network, cable TV network is different from private local area network. The spanning tree protocol shall be changed to be suitable for the environments of the public network. This paper firstly introduces the principle of bridged network and bridge, summarizes the requirements of public cable network for spanning tree protocol, then it gives the logic diagrams of cable modem terminate system and cable modem as bridges. Finally the paper describes the spanning tree protocol of cable TV network in detail.
A Balanced and Robust Spanning Tree Algorithm for Overlay Multicast

Abstract:Overlay multicast has become an increasingly popular alternative to IP-supported multicast, because of its flexibility and adaptivity. It requires a routing spanning tree on overlay network, using which messages transfer from the source to the destinations. In many multimedia applications, the spanning tree should provide low-delay paths for each member, and consume less network resources at the same time. However, these two metrics always conflict. In addition, the robustness of the spanning tree is also important as the overlay network is usually in dynamic environment and easy to various disturbances. In this paper, we first introduce a problem model for balanced spanning tree which require both the bounded delay and minimal network cost. Then, we propose our heuristic algorithm to this problem. After that, we take a delicate approach to the robustness in our algorithm, thus turn it to a balanced and robust algorithm. Finally the simulation results show that our balanced and robust spanning tree achieves a desirable trade-off for the delay performance and the network resource utility, and display robustness to node failure.

Abstract:Growth triangle has been proved to be an effective developmental pattern in optimizing total structure of a region and in regulating eco-tech cooperation among different regions as well.So it is easy to yield,by the principles of mid-point primate polarization and center of gravity primate polarization,two triangle networks with fractal geometry nature,i.e.mid-point polarization networks and centre of gravity polarization networks.After introducing concept of dendrite dimension,this paper determined their dendrite dimension as 1.585 and 1.339 respectively,concluding that the mid-point polarization networks uphold both growth angle advantages and optimal fractal dimension,being an ideal transportation of urban systems.Upon this view,the paper discussed the deep meaning of dendrite dimensions with an example of core urban agglomeration of Henan(CUAH) province,as well as determining the dendrite dimension of CUAH to be 1.4375.Then the paper plans the ideal transportation pattern on the basis of the present limitation of networks of CUAH and requirement for mid-point networks.Finally,some optimum arguments are discussed.

Abstract:Ethernet has grown from its roots in the home and office environment to contend in previously uncharted territory of MANs and WANs. However, deploying Ethernet in MAN requires considerable upgrades. In this paper, we focus on the traffic engineering problem based on the construction of multiple spanning trees, which is significantly impacted by the link cost metric. In order to achieve a good load balance and decrease the average delay of the network, we propose to use a configurable link cost metric which is a function of both current link load and link delay. Simulation results reveal that the proposed link cost metric provides better performance than previously advocated metrics, and is also more flexible. Abstract:Application-layer multicast (ALM) has gained popularity as an alternative of traditional multicasting. This article defines a stability factor and a standard network delay to quantify and evaluate the impact of congestion on spanning trees in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. The article first develops a simple statistical link model which describes congestion occurring in spanning trees and then introduces a dependency-degree factor which expresses the dependence between adjacent links. Simulation results show that even in case of high congestion probability, the stability of spanning trees can be significantly enhanced by improving the dependence of adjacent links. The statistical model not only provides a framework to compare existing ALM algorithms, but can also be applied to ALM network performance analysis.

Abstract:We currently witness the emergence of interesting new network topologies optimized towards the traffic matrices they serve, such as demand-aware datacenter interconnects (e.g., ProjecToR) and demand-aware overlay networks (e.g., SplayNets). This paper introduces a formal framework and approach to reason about and design such topologies. We leverage a connection between the communication frequency of two nodes and the path length between them in the network, which depends on the entropy of the communication matrix. Our main contribution is a novel robust, yet sparse, family of network topologies which guarantee an expected path length that is proportional to the entropy of the communication patterns.

Efficient Topology Control for Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks with Non-Uniform Transmission Ranges

Abstract:Wireless network topology control has drawn considerable attention recently. Priori arts assumed that the wireless ad hoc networks are modeled by unit disk graphs (UDG), i.e., two mobile hosts can communicate as long as their Euclidean distance is no more than a threshold. However, practically, the networks are never so perfect as unit disk graphs: the transmission ranges may vary due to various reasons such as the device differences, the network control necessity, and the perturbation of the transmission ranges even the transmission ranges are set as the same originally. Thus, we assume that each mobile host has its own transmission range. The networks are modeled by mutual inclusion graphs (MG), where two nodes are connected iff they are within the transmission range of each other. Previously, no method is known for topology control when the networks are modeled as mutual inclusion graphs. The paper proposes the first distributed mechanism to build a sparse power efficient network topology for ad hoc wireless networks with non-uniform transmission ranges. We first extend the Yao structure to build a spanner with a constant length and power stretch factor for mutual inclusion graph. We then propose two efficient localized algorithms to construct connected sparse network topologies. The first structure, called extended Yao-Yao, has node degree at most O (log γ), where γ = max u max uv ∈ MG r_u/r_v . The second structure, called extended Yao and Sink, has node degree bounded by O (log γ), and is a length and power spanner. The methods are based on a novel partition strategy of the space surrounded each mobile host. Both algorithms have communication cost O ( n ) under a local broadcasting communication model, where each message has O (log n ) bits.

Abstract:Inferring fine-grained link metrics by using aggregated path measurements, known as network tomography, is an effective and efficient way to facilitate various network operations, such as network monitoring, load balancing, and failure diagnosis. Given the network topology and a set of interesting links, we study the problem of calculating the link metrics of these links by end-to-end cycle-free path measurements among selected monitors, i.e., preferential link tomography. Since assigning nodes as monitors usually requires non-negligible operational cost, we focus on assigning a minimum number of monitors to identify these interesting links. We propose an optimal monitor assignment (OMA) algorithm for preferential link tomography in communication networks. OMA first partitions the graph representing the network topology into multiple graph components. Then, OMA carefully assigns monitors inside each graph component and at the boundaries of multiple graph components. We theoretically prove the optimality of OMA by proving: 1) the monitors assigned by OMA are able to identify all interesting links and 2) the number of monitors assigned by OMA is minimal. We also implement OMA and evaluate it through extensive simulations based on both real topologies and synthetic topologies. Compared with two baseline approaches, OMA reduces the number of monitors assigned significantly in various network settings.

Abstract:Let G = (V, E, w) be an undirected graph with nonnegative edge weight. For any spanning tree T of G, the weight of T is the total weight of its tree edges and the routing cost of T is Sigma(u,v is an element of V) d(T)(u, v), where d(T)(u,v) is the distance between u and v on T. In this paper, we present an algorithm providing a trade off among tree weight, routing cost and time complexity. For any real number alpha > 1 and an integer 1 less than or equal to k less than or equal to 6 alpha - 3, in O(n(k+1) + n(3)) time, the algorithm finds a spanning tree whose routing cost is at most (1 + 2/(k + 1)) alpha times the one of the minimum routing cost tree, and the tree weight is at most (f(k) + 2/(alpha - 1)) times the one of the minimum spanning tree, where f(k) = 1 if k = 1 and f(k) = 2 if k > 1.

On Completely Edge-Independent Spanning Trees in Locally Twisted Cubes

Abstract:A network can contain numerous spanning trees. If two spanning trees $T_i,T_j$ do not share any common edges, $T_i$ and $T_j$ are said to be pairwisely edge-disjoint. For spanning trees $T_1, T_2, ..., T_m$, if every two of them are pairwisely edge-disjoint, they are called completely edge-independent spanning trees (CEISTs for short). CEISTs can facilitate many network functionalities, and constructing CEISTs as maximally allowed as possible in a given network is a worthy undertaking. In this paper, we establish the maximal number of CEISTs in the locally twisted cube network, and propose an algorithm to construct $\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$ CEISTs in $LTQ_n$, the $n$-dimensional locally twisted cube. The proposed algorithm has been actually implemented, and we present the outputs. Network broadcasting in the $LTQ_n$ was simulated using $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$ CEISTs, and the performance compared with broadcasting using a single tree.

Localized Topology Control for Heterogeneous Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

Abstract:We study topology control in heterogeneous wireless ad hoc networks, where mobile hosts may have different maximum transmission powers and two nodes are connected if they are within the maximum transmission range of each other. We present several strategies so that all wireless nodes self-maintain sparse and power efficient topologies in heterogeneous network environments with low communication cost. The first structure is sparse and can be used for broadcasting. The second structure keeps the minimum power consumption path, and the third structure is a length and power spanner with a bounded degree. Both the second and third structures are power efficient and can be used for unicast. Here a structure is power efficient if the total power consumption of the least cost path connecting any two nodes in it is no more than a small constant factor of that in the original heterogeneous communication graph. All our methods use at most O(n) total messages, where each message has O(logn) bits.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, the spanning tree is usually used as a routing structure to collect data. In some situations, nodes do in-network aggregation to reduce transmissions, save energy, and maximize network lifetime. Because of the restricted energy of sensor nodes, how to build an aggregation tree of maximum lifetime is an important issue. It has been proved to be NP-complete in previous works. As shortest path spanning trees intuitively have short delay, it is imperative to find an energy-efficient shortest path tree for time-critical applications. In this article, we first study the problem of building maximum lifetime shortest path aggregation trees in wireless sensor networks. We show that when restricted to shortest path trees, building maximum lifetime aggregation trees can be solved in polynomial time. We present a centralized algorithm and design a distributed protocol for building such trees. Simulation results show that our approaches greatly improve the lifetime of the network and are very effective compared to other solutions. We extend our discussion to networks without aggregation and present interesting results.

Abstract:A set of $k$k spanning trees in a graph $G$G are called completely independent spanning trees (CISTs for short) if the paths joining every pair of vertices $x$x and $y$y in any two trees have neither vertex nor edge in common, except for $x$x and $y$y. The existence of multiple CISTs in the underlying graph of a network has applications in fault-tolerant broadcasting and secure message distribution. In this paper, we investigate the construction of CISTs in a server-centric data center network called BCube connected crossbars (BCCC), which can provide good network performance using inexpensive commodity off-the-shelf switches and commodity servers with only two network interface card (NIC) ports. The significant advantages of BCCC are its good expandability, lower communication latency, and higher robustness in component failure. Based on the structure of compound graphs of BCCC, we provide efficient algorithms to construct $lceil frac{n}{4} ceil$⌈n4⌉ CISTs in the logical graph of BCCC, denoted by $L$L-$BCCC(n,k)$BCCC(n,k), for $ngeqslant 5$n⩾5. As a by-product, we obtain a fault-tolerant routing that takes the constructed CISTs as its routing table. We then evaluate the performance of the fault-tolerant routing through simulation results.

Abstract:Given an undirected graph with a nonnegative weight on each edge, the shortest total path length spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree of the graph such that the total path length summed over all pairs of the vertices is minimized. In this paper, we present several approximation algorithms for this problem. Our algorithms achieve approximation ratios of 2, 15/8, and 3/2 in time O(n2+f(G)),O(n3), and O(n4) respectively, in which f(G) is the time complexity for computing all-pairs shortest paths of the input graph G and n is the number of vertices of G. Furthermore, we show that the approximation ratio of (4/3+ε) can be achieved in polynomial time for any constant ε>0.
Localized Fault-Tolerant Spanner Based Topology Control in Wireless Networks

Abstract:As a metric of fault-tolerance, k-connectivity fails to consider the energy-efficiency of the remaining network after node failures. Fault-tolerant spanner considers both energy-efficiency and fault-tolerance problems of the network. A fault-tolerant spanner has a fault-tolerant stretch factor bounded by a predetermined real number, which guarantees that the remaining network is high energy-efficient after node failures. In this paper, we use fault-tolerant spanner to measure the network fault-tolerance and propose an approach to transform a spanner into a fault-tolerant spanner. Based on the approach, we propose a k-fault-tolerant t-spanner (k-FTtS) topology control algorithm. k-FTtS is localized and the topology under it has following properties: 1) it has (k+1)-connectivity; 2) it has a bounded stretch factor after the failure of up to k nodes. Simulation results show that k-FTtS is an effective algorithm to construct fault-tolerant spanners in wireless networks and also performs well in logical degree, physical degree and transmission radius.
