Abstract:A cobalt and copper catalyzed reaction protocol has been developed to achieve the oxidative C-H/N-H annulation of benzamides containing an 8-aminoquinoline moiety as the directing group with ketones. Abstract:Doubled up: a rhodium(III)/copper(II) system co-catalyzes the annulation of benzimides with internal alkynes for the synthesis of indenones (see scheme; Cp*=C(5) Me(5)). The reaction involves an uncommon nucleophilic addition of a transition-metal-carbon bond to an imide moiety. This novel reaction provides a facile route to synthesize indenones from readily available benzimides and internal alkynes.

Abstract:A mild Co(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of N-arylureas and internal alkynes has been developed. The use of less electrophilic ureas other than acetamides as directing groups is crucial for the reaction. A broad range of synthetically useful functional groups are compatible with this reaction, thus providing a new opportunity for the synthesis of diverse indoles.

Abstract:Herein, we developed a rhodium(III)‐catalyzed synthesis of indenones from 2‐aryl‐3‐nitrosoindoles and alkynes in a redox‐neutral manner. The reaction did not require harsh conditions or any external oxidants. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculation revealed that the reaction involved directed C–H activation, dearomative spirocyclization, N–O/C–C bond cleavage and ketimine hydrolysis cascade processes.

Abstract:We describe here a Cu-catalyzed and 4-OH-TEMPO-mediated sequential dehydrogenation/aza-Michael addition/annulation cascade reaction for the construction of N-alkyl 2-arylindoles from facilely available saturated ketones and 2-arylethynylanilines. This reaction shows high regioselectivity and tolerates a variety of functional groups. Moreover, 3-alkyl-substituted indoles can also be achieved when using 2-alkylethynylanilines as starting materials.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed tandem arylation/cyclization reaction of 3-(ortho-boronated aryl) conjugated enones with unactivated alkynes is reported. By using a rhodium(I)/chiral-diene complex as the catalyst, the protocol was processed smoothly to provide various 2,3-disubstituted indene compounds in high yields with excellent regioselectivities and enantioselectivities. The approach outlined herein is appealing, as simple diarylalkynes, diakylalkynes, and alkyl(aryl)alkynes are the starting materials.

Abstract:Herein, a copper-catalyzed intramolecular cascade reaction of conjugated enynones to deliver substituted 1H-indenes is reported. The inexpensive and less toxic copper salt served as the only catalyst in the transformation, affording the 3-(2-furyl)-substituted 1H-indenes in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions with broad functional group tolerance and making it highly appealing for synthetic organic chemistry. Notably, detailed DFT calculations have been carried out to elucidate that the reaction undergoes a copper-mediated 5-exo-dig cyclization of enynones to afford copper-(2-furyl)-carbene intermediate, followed by diene-carbene cyclization (one step but involving 6 pi cyclization of Cu-carbene and reductive elimination) and 1,5-hydrogen shift to provide the 1H-indenes.

Abstract:A new method of cobalt-catalyzed synthesis of pyrrolidinones from aliphatic amides and terminal alkynes was discovered through a C-H bond functionalization process on unactivated sp(3) carbons with the silver cocatalyst using a bidentate auxiliary. For the first time, a broad range of easily accessible alkynes are exploited as the reaction partner in C(sp(3))-H bond activation to give the important 5-ethylidene-pyrrolidin-2-ones in a site-selective fashion. The reaction tolerates a wide variety of functional groups including -F, -Cl, -Br, -CF3, ether, cyclopropane, and thiophene. Both pyridine ligand and aromatic solvent play the important role for the promotion of reactivity. This cobalt-catalyzed cyclization reaction can be successfully extended to a variety of aromatic amides to afford a variety of isoindolinones. Attractive features of this catalytic system include its low cost, easy operation, and convenient access to a wide range of pyrrolidinones and isoindolinones.

Abstract:An efficient, atom-economic and one-pot synthesis of isoindolo[2,1-a]indol-6-ones via CuI/Pd(OAc)2-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamidation of alkynyl group, and C-H dehydrogenative coupling of ortho-alkynyl-N-arylbenzamides has been developed. This transformation occurs with the use of oxygen as the oxidant, and water is the only by-product. The reaction shows a high tolerance to a variety of functional groups, and affords isoindolo[2,1-a]indol-6-ones in good to high yields.

Abstract:A cobalt‐catalyzed annulation of o‐phenylenediamines and internal alkynes for the synthesis of quinoxalines is developed. This method provides a variety of quinoxalines in good to high yields under a simple and mild reaction conditions with molecular O2 as a terminal oxidant. Preliminary mechanistic studies show that a novel reaction mechanism is involved in the current reaction, which is different from the previous reported dicarbonyl compound mechanism via the oxidation of the alkyne.

Abstract:A cobalt(II)-catalyzed C2-H carbonylation of indoles with amines toward indole-2-carboxamides has been developed. By employing Co(OAc)(2)·4H(2)O as an inexpensive catalyst and using benzene-1,3,5-triyl triformate (TFBen) as the CO surrogate, a variety of indole-2-carboxamide derivatives were produced in moderate to high yields. Additionally, several bioactive-molecule-related compounds can be applied as substrates, as well.

Abstract:A Co(III)-catalyzed, internal and terminal alkyne-compatible indole synthesis protocol is reported herein. The N-amino (hydrazine) group imparts distinct, diverse reactivity patterns for directed C-H functionalization/cyclization reactions. Notable synthetic features include regioselectivity for a meta-substituted arylhydrazine, regioselectivity for a chain-branched terminal alkyne, formal incorporation of an acetylenic unit through C2-desilylation on a C2-silylated indole derivative, formal inversion of regioselectivity through consecutive C3-derivatization and C2-desilylation processes, and formal bond migration for a linear-chain terminal alkyne.
