Abstract:The photoionization and photodissociation of 1,4-dioxane have been investigated with a reflectron time-of-flight photoionization mass spectrometry and a tunable vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation in the energy region of 8.0–15.5 eV. Parent ion and fragment ions at m/z 88, 87, 58, 57, 45, 44, 43, 41, 31, 30, 29, 28 and 15 are detected under supersonic conditions. The ionization energy of DX as well as the appearance energies of its fragment ions C4H7O2+, C3H6O+, C3H5O+, C2H5O+, C2H4O+, C2H3O+, C3H5+, CH3O+, C2H6+, C2H5+/CHO+, C2H4+ and CH3+ was determined from their photoionization efficiency curves. The optimized structures for the neutrals, cations, transition states and intermediates related to photodissociation of DX are characterized at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level and their energies are obtained by G3B3 method. Possible dissociative channels of the DX are proposed based on comparison of experimental AE values and theoretical predicted ones. Intramolecular hydrogen migrations are found to be the dominant processes in most of the fragmentation pathways of 1,4-dioxane.

Abstract:Site-selective ionization of ethanol dimer and the subsequent fragmentation were studied by synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry. With photoionization efficiency spectra measurements and theoretical calculations, the detailed mechanisms of the ionization-dissociation processes of ethanol dimer under VUV irradiation were explored. In 9.49-10.89 eV photon energy range, it was found that the ejection of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) electron from hydrogen bond donor induces a rapid barrierless proton-transfer process followed by two competitive dissociation channels, generating (C2H5OH)[middle dot]H(+) and CH2O[middle dot](C2H5OH)H(+), respectively. The latter comes from a carbon-carbon bond cleavage in the donor. While the photon energy is 10.9-11.58 eV, the electron of HOMO-1 of the hydrogen bond acceptor, is removed. Besides the dissociation channel to produce C2H5OH and C2H5OH(+), a new channel to generate (C2H5OH)[middle dot]CH2OH(+) is opened, where the cleavage of the carbon-carbon bond occurs in the acceptor. When the photon energy increases to 11.58 eV, the electron from HOMO-2 is ejected.

Abstract:Dissociative photoionization of 1,2-epoxyoctane was investigated by synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photons in the energy region of 9.8–16.6 eV under ultrasonic molecular beam. Dissociative fragment ions were measured with reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer at different photon energies. Appearance potentials of the dominative ion fragments were determined through photoionization efficiency curves. The structures and energies of the parent, ionized and neutral radicals were obtained with G3 calculations. Through comparing the experimental results with the theoretical calculations, we proposed the dissociative channels for the photoionization of 1,2-epoxyoctane.
Unexpected Methyl Migrations of Ethanol Dimer under Synchrotron VUV Radiation.

Abstract:While methyl transfer is well known to occur in the enzyme- and metal-catalyzed reactions, the methyl transfer in the metal-free organic molecules induced by the photon ionization has been less concerned. Herein, vacuum ultraviolet single photon ionization and dissociation of ethanol dimer are investigated with synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectroscopy and theoretical methods. Besides the protonated clusters cation (C2H5OH)⋅H(+) (m/z = 47) and the β-carbon-carbon bond cleavage fragment CH2O⋅(C2H5OH)H(+) (m/z = 77), the measured mass spectra revealed that a new fragment (C2H5OH)⋅(CH3)(+) (m/z = 61) appeared at the photon energy of 12.1 and 15.0 eV, where the neutral dimer could be vertically ionized to higher ionic state. Thereafter, the generated carbonium ions are followed by a Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement and then dissociate to produce this new fragment, which is considered to generate after surmounting a few barriers including intra- and inter-molecular methyl migrations by the aid of theoretical calculations. The appearance energy of this new fragment is measured as 11.55 ± 0.05 eV by scanning photoionization efficiency curve. While the signal intensity of fragment m/z = 61 starts to increase, the fragments m/z = 47 and 77 tend to slowly incline around 11.55 eV photon energy. This suggests that the additional fragment channels other than (C2H5OH)⋅H(+) and CH2O⋅(C2H5OH)H(+) have also been opened, which consume some dimer cations. The present report provides a clear description of the photoionization and dissociation processes of the ethanol dimer in the range of the photon energy 12-15 eV.

Abstract:Using vacuum ultraviolet photons produced by synchrotron radiation and reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer, dissociative photoionization of isooctane was measured in the photon energy region of 9.7–15.6eV under ultrasonic molecular beam. Then the dissociative ionization products at different photon energies were obtained. By measuring the photoionization efficiency curves, the appearance potentials of the dominative ion fragments and the vertical ionization energy of isooctane were determined. In addition, combining with G3 calculations we obtained the structure and energy of the parent, neutral and ion fragments. By comparing the experimental measurements with the theoretical calculations, the dissociative photoionization channels of isooctane were elucidated, and formation enthalpies of the fragmented ions and the dissociation energy of the parent ion were obtained.

Abstract:The photoionization and dissociative photoionization of 1-propanol and 2-propanols have been studied at the photon energy range of 9.84 similar to 11.80 eV. Photoionization efficiency spectra for ions CH3CH2CH2OH+, CH3CH2CHOH+, CH2CH2OH+, CH3CH2CH2+, CH3CH=CH2+, CH2OH+ from 1-propanol, and CH3CH(OH)CH3+, CH3C(OH)CH3+, CH3CHOH+, CH2=CHOH+, CH3CHCH3+, CH3CH=CH2+ from 2-propanol have been measured. In addition, the energetics of the dissociative photoionization has been examined by ab initio Gaussion-3(G3) calculations. The computational results are useful in establishing the dissociation channels near the ionization thresholds. With the help of G3 results, the dissociation channels for formation of the fragment ions CH3CH2CHOH+, CH2CH2OH+, CH3CH2CH2+, CH3CH=CH2+, CH2OH+ from 1-propanol, and CH3C(OH)CH3+, CH3CHOH+, CH2=CHOH+, CH3CHCH3+, CH3CH=CH2+ from 2-propanol have been established. The G3 results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Molecular dimers have attracted much attention in the study of molecular structure and dynamics due to their complex interactions involving both weak van der Waals and strong covalent bonds. We investigate the dissociative ionization of carbon dioxide dimers exposed to intense femtosecond laser fields. The angular distributions of ionic fragments of the breakup channels (CO2)(2)(2+) -> CO2+ + CO2+ and (CO2)(2)(3+) -> CO22+ + CO2+ strongly depend on the laser intensity. Simulations based on time-dependent density-functional theory reproduce the experimental observations qualitatively and show that the angular distribution of fragments is determined by the angle-dependent orbital ionization probability and the relative contributions of different orbitals, both of which are intensity sensitive. By comparing the ionization of the dimer with CO2 monomer, we find that the weak van der Waals bond and molecular geometry in the dimer play considerable roles. This work extends significantly earlier studies of simple linear covalent bond molecules.
Sequential and concerted C-C and C-O bond dissociation in the Coulomb explosion of 2-propanol

Abstract:We study the competing mechanisms involved in the Coulomb explosion of 2-propanol CH3 2CHOH2+ dication, formed by an ultrafast extreme ultraviolet pulse. Over 20 product channels are identified and characterized using 3D coincidence imaging of the ionic fragments. The momentum correlations in the three-body fragmentation channels provide evidence for a dominant sequential mechanism, starting with the cleavage of a C-C bond, ejecting CH3 + and CH3CHOH+ cations, followed by a secondary fragmentation of the hydroxyethyl cation that can be delayed for up to a microsecond after ionization. The C-O bond dissociation channels are less frequent, involving proton transfer and double proton transfer, forming H2O+ and H3O+ products, respectively, and exhibiting mixed sequential and concerted character. These results can be explained by the high potential barrier for the C-O bond dissociation seen in our ab initio quantum chemical calculations. We also observe coincident COH+ + C2Hn + ions, suggesting exotic structural rearrangements, starting from the Frank-Condon geometry of the neutral 2-propanol system. Remarkably, the relative yield of the H3 + product is suppressed compared with methanol and alkene dications. Ab initio potentials and ground state molecular dynamics simulations show that a rapid and direct C-C bond cleavage dominates the Coulomb explosion process, leaving no time for H2 roaming, which is a necessary precursor to the H3 + formation.

Abstract:The study of molecular valence electron dynamics and their coupling with nuclear motion is one of the frontiers of ultrafast physics and ultrafast chemistry. With time-resolved strong-field ion momentum spectroscopy, we study electron valence and nucleus wavepacket evolution on a femtosecond timescale. Two orientation-dependent bond-breaks of N2O molecules from the same electronic state are studied, and the influence of orbital hybridization and polarization effect during molecular breaking is analyzed based on the measured time-resolved asymmetric Pzsum distributions, allowing a visual representation of electron localization during the dissociation of molecules into ions and atoms. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results on orientation-dependent dissociation dynamics allows us to understand how nuclear motions evolve during fragmentation and to control ultrafast molecular reactions. Ultrafast spectroscopy allows for the real-time observation of molecular processes and enables a better understanding of the electron dynamics and nuclear evolution that occur during a chemical reaction. Here, the authors study, experimentally and theoretically, the electron localization that occurs on a femtosecond timescale during the dissociation of N2O.

Abstract:The vacuum-ultraviolet photoionization and dissociative photoionization of carbon monoxide in a region 14-38 eV have been investigated with time-of-flight (TOF) photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS) using tunable synchrotron radiation (SR). The adiabatic ionization energy (IE) of carbon monoxide and appearance energies (AE) for its fragment ions in different states are determined by measurements of photoionization efficiency spectra (PIES). Ab initio calculations have been performed to investigate the reaction mechanism of dissociative photoionization of carbon monoxide. On the basis of experimental and predicted theoretical results, the mechanisms of photoionization and dissociative photoionization of molecular CO are discussed, and sixteen dissociative photoionization processes are proposed. The equilibrium geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies of CO molecule, and its parent cation were calculated by using MP2 (full) method. The differences of configurations between them are also discussed on the basis of theoretical calculations. According to our results, the experimental IE of CO molecule, and dissociation energies (E-d) of possible dissociative channels are in reasonable agreement with the calculated values of the proposed photodissociation channels. Abstract:The vacuum-ultraviolet photoionization and dissociative photoionization of 1,3-butadiene in a region similar to 8.5-17 eV have been investigated with time-of-flight photoionization mass spectrometry using tunable synchrotron radiation. The adiabatic ionization energy of 1,3-butadiene and appearance energies for its fragment ions, C4H5+, C4H4+, C4H3+, C3H3+, C2H4+, C2H3+, and C2H2+, are determined to be 9.09, 11.72, 13.11, 15.20, 11.50, 12.44, 15.15, and 15.14 eV, respectively, by measurements of photoionization efficiency spectra. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations have been performed to investigate the reaction mechanism of dissociative photoionization of 1,3-butadiene. On the basis of experimental and theoretical results, seven dissociative photoionization channels are proposed: C4H5+ + H, C4H4+ + H-2, C4H3+ + H-2 + H, C3H3+ + CH3, C2H4+ + C2H2, C2H3+ + C2H2 + H, and C2H2+ + C2H2 + H-2. Channel C3H3+ + CH3 is found to be the dominant one, followed by C4H5+ + H and C2H4+ + C2H2. The majority of these channels occur via isomerization prior to dissociation. Competitive fragmentation pathways of acetic acid dimer explored by synchrotron VUV photoionization mass spectrometry and electronic structure calculations.

Abstract:In present study, photoionization and dissociation of acetic acid dimers have been studied with the synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations. Besides the intense signal corresponding to protonated cluster ions (CH(3)COOH)(n)·H(+), the feature related to the fragment ions (CH(3)COOH)H(+)·COO (105 amu) via β-carbon-carbon bond cleavage is observed. By scanning photoionization efficiency spectra, appearance energies of the fragments (CH(3)COOH)·H(+) and (CH(3)COOH)H(+)·COO are obtained. With the aid of theoretical calculations, seven fragmentation channels of acetic acid dimer cations were discussed, where five cation isomers of acetic acid dimer are involved. While four of them are found to generate the protonated species, only one of them can dissociate into a C-C bond cleavage product (CH(3)COOH)H(+)·COO. After surmounting the methyl hydrogen-transfer barrier 10.84 ± 0.05 eV, the opening of dissociative channel to produce ions (CH(3)COOH)(+) becomes the most competitive path. When photon energy increases to 12.4 eV, we also found dimer cations can be fragmented and generate new cations (CH(3)COOH)·CH(3)CO(+). Kinetics, thermodynamics, and entropy factors for these competitive dissociation pathways are discussed. The present report provides a clear picture of the photoionization and dissociation processes of the acetic acid dimer in the range of the photon energy 9-15 eV.

The photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves for molecule ion and fragment ions: C4H8O+, C4H7O+, C3H5O+, C4H7+, C4H6+, C4H5+, C2H4O+, C2H3O+, C3H6+, C3H5+, C3H3+, CH3O+, CHO+ have been measured, and the ionization energy (IE) and the appearance energies (AEs) of the fragment ions have been obtained. The stable species and the first order saddle points have been calculated on the CCSD(T)/cc-pvTZ//B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level. Spatial separation of 2-propanol monomer and its ionization-fragmentation pathways

Abstract:The spatial separation of 2-propanol monomer from its clusters in a molecular beam by an electrostatic deflector was demonstrated. Samples of 2-propanol monomer with a purity of 90 % and a beam density of $7\times10^6~\text{cm}^{-3}$ were obtained. These samples were utilized to study the femtosecond-laser-induced strong-field multi-photon ionization and fragmentation of 2-propanol using non-resonant 800 nm light with peak intensities of $3-7\times10^{13}~W/cm^{2}$.

Abstract:Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) dissociative photoionization of methylbutenol ( C5H10O) in 9.0~15.5 eV was investigated with photoionization mass spectrometry using synchrotron radiation (SR). The ionization energy of C5H10O and the appearance energies for the main fragment ions were determined with photoionization efficiency curves. The photodissociation mechanisms of methylbutenol were discussed based on comparison of our experimental results with those predicted by the quantum-chemical calculations. The dissociation channels may be divided into two types: the direct bond cleavage in C5H10O+ and the reactions involving transition states. Transition states and intermediates for C4H5+ and C3H5+ were determined, and the reaction barriers were in agreement with the experimental dissociation energies.
