Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Z-scheme heterojunction through interface engineering for broad spectrum photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:In this paper, we have designed the composite material of black phosphorus/tungsten nitride (BP/WN) with near-infrared light (NIR light) response as a noble-metal free photocatalyst for the first time. Modification of bulk BP by ball milling can control the band gap of the composite material to achieve efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the near-infrared region. At wider than 420 nm, and with illumination wider than 700 nm, a certain amount of hydrogen can be produced without any hole quencher. The rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from pure water reaches 10.77 mu molg(-1)h(-1) under NIR light without any cocatalyst. The presence of a Z-type heterojunction effectively separates photogenerated carriers and prolongs the lifetime of photogenerated carriers, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results indicate that BP/WN photocatalysts can provide a new approach to artificial photosynthesis and renewable energy conversion.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical(PEC) processes can convert solar energy into high-density chemical energy or for the treatment of environmental pollutants, which are ideal ways to deal with environmental and energy crises. The development of high-efficiency photocatalysts and photoelectrodes is the key to the in-depth development and practical application of the two technologies.Black phosphorus(BP) has excellent physicalcochemical properties such as adjustable band gap, high carrier mobility, large specific surface area and anisotropy, making it one of the most promising catalysts.BP-based heterostructure can not only realize the effective separation of photogenerated carriers but also improve the stability of BP, and is widely used in photocatalytic and PEC reactions. In this review, we first introduce the crystal structure, band structure, anisotropy, and preparation of BP with different dimensions(bulk, zero-dimension and two-dimension). Then, according to the transfer path of the photogenerated carriers and the components, the BP-based heterostructures are divided into type I heterojunction, type II heterojunction, Z-scheme heterojunction, S-scheme heterojunction, BP/carbonbased material heterostructure, BP/metal heterostructure and multi-component heterostructure.Highlighted are the diverse photocatalytic applications of BP-based heterostructure, such as water splitting and CO 2 reduction, N 2 fixation, pollutant degradation, photothermal and photodynamic therapy.Finally, some concluding views and opinions are stated on the challenges and opportunities faced by the further development of BP-based heterostructures in photocatalysis and PEC water splitting.
Fabrication of direct Z-scheme black phosphorus nanosheets/Ag2CO3 heterojunction photocatalyst with enhanced stability and visible light photocatalytic activity

Abstract:In this paper, PDDA-functionalized black phosphorus nanosheets (BP) was used to construct BP/Ag2CO3 heterojunction photocatalyst by a simple co-precipitation process. The morphology, photoelectrochemical, and photocatalytic performance of BP/Ag2CO3 heterojunction photocatalyst were systematically characterized and analyzed. BP was proved to enhance the transport efficiency and restrain the recombination efficiency of the carriers in the BP/Ag2CO3 heterojunction. At the same time, BP greatly suppressed the Ag2CO3 photo-corrosion and improved the stability for methyl orange (MO) degradation. After four cycles, compared with the 19.2% degradation rate of MO in pure Ag2CO3, the photocatalytic activity remained as high as 87.1% in 15-BP/Ag2CO3 heterojunction. The Mott–Schottky and active species capture experiments enabled us to obtain the BP/Ag2CO3 heterojunction band gap configuration, and propose the reaction mechanism of the direct Z-scheme. The in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and work function calculation verified the charge transfer in BP/Ag2CO3 direct Z-scheme heterojunction. This Z-scheme mechanism interpreted the enhanced photocatalytic stability of BP/Ag2CO3 for inhibiting the Ag+ photoreduction in the conduction band of Ag2CO3, and meanwhile elucidated the extremely improved photocatalytic activity by restraining the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This work is expected to be useful in providing a facile route for designing novel heterojunction photocatalytic material and carrying out high-efficiency wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Solar-to-hydrogen (H 2 ) conversion has been regarded as a sustainable and renewable technique to address aggravated environmental pollution and global energy crisis. The most critical aspect in this technology is to develop highly efficient and stable photocatalysts, especially the metal-free photocatalysts. Recently, black phosphorus (BP), as a rising star 2D nanomaterial, has captured enormous attention in photocatalytic water splitting owing to its widespread optical absorption, adjustable direct bandgap and superior carrier migration characteristics. However, the rapid charge recombination of pristine BP has seriously limited its practical application as photocatalyst. The construction of BP-based semicondutor heterojunctions has been proved to be effective strategy for enhancing the separation of photogenerated carriers. This review attempts to summarize the recent progress in BP-based semicondutor heterojunctions for photocatalytic water splitting, including type-I and II heterojunctions, Z-scheme systems, and multicomponent heterojunctions. Finally, a brief summary and perspective on the challenges and future directions in this field are also provided.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP), a phosphorus analog of graphene, is a two-dimensional material with the thickness-dependent bandgap and a high carrier mobility, which emerges as a promising material in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this study, BP loaded with surface hydroxyl has been prepared by liquid ultrasonic exfoliation and used as the co-catalyst, which results in 341% photocatalytic hydrogen evolution enhancement to the anatase TiO2 under the simulated sunlight irradiation and a quantum efficiency as high as 18.23% at 365 nm. The improved photocatalytic activity has been ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism. These results indicate that 2D surface hydroxyl-loaded BP can be used as a broadband photocatalyst by forming type II heterostructures with other wide-bandgap semiconductors.

Abstract:Heterojunction photocatalytic materials show great promise in hydrogen production from water decomposition under visible light. The selection of components in the heterojunction and the type of heterojunction constructed directly determine the hydrogen production efficiency. In this study, black phosphorene (BP), which has a broad visible light absorption range, and ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), with a suitable band structure, are chosen to design new heterojunction photocatalysts. Through an ultrasound‐assisted solvothermal method, a BP/ZIS heterojunction with a unique layered 2D/2D structure is successfully synthesized. Comprehensive characterization and calculation have elucidated the microstructure and band structure of BP and ZIS, further confirming the formation of a Z‐scheme heterojunction. Such a novel BP/ZIS heterojunction exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1317 μmol·h−1·g−1, making a 3.35‐fold increase compared to ZIS and superior performance over BP. This enhancement in photocatalytic activity of BP/ZIS heterojunction can be primarily attributed to the enhanced light harvesting and carrier utilization resulting from the formation of the Z‐scheme heterojunction. This work provides new insights for the development of efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:A 2D black phosphorus/platinum heterostructure (Pt/BP) is developed as a highly efficient photocatalyst for solar‐driven chemical reactions. The heterostructure, synthesized by depositing BP nanosheets with ultrasmall (≈1.1 nm) Pt nanoparticles, shows strong Pt–P interactions and excellent stability. The Pt/BP heterostructure exhibits obvious P‐type semiconducting characteristics and efficient absorption of solar energy extending into the infrared region. Furthermore, during light illumination, accelerated charge separation is observed from Pt/BP as manifested by the ultrafast electron migration (0.11 ps) detected by a femtosecond pump‐probe microscopic optical system as well as efficient electron accumulation on Pt revealed by in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These unique properties result in remarkable performance of Pt/BP in typical hydrogenation and oxidation reactions under simulated solar light illumination, and its efficiency is much higher than that of other common Pt catalysts and even much superior to that of conventional thermal catalysis. The 2D Pt/BP heterostructure has enormous potential in photochemical reactions involving solar light and the results of this study provide insights into the design of next‐generation high‐efficiency photocatalysts.
Rational Design of Black Phosphorus-Based Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting: the Role of Defects.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) has received increasing interest as a promising photocatalyst for water splitting. Nevertheless, exploring the underlying hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism and improving the water oxidizing ability remains an urgent task. Here, using first-principles calculations, we uncover the role of point defects in improving the HER activity of BP photocatalysts. We demonstrate that the defective phosphorene can be effectively activated by the photoinduced electrons under solar light, exhibiting high HER catalytic activity in a broad pH range (0-10). Besides, we propose that the direct Z-scheme in the defective BP/SnSe2 heterobilayer is quite feasible for photocatalytic overall water splitting. This mechanism could be further verified based on the excited state dynamics method. The role of point defects in the photocatalytic mechanism provides useful insights for the development of BP photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen is considered to be a promising approach to clean, sustainable, and renewable energy. The highly efficient photocatalysts play a key role in photocatalytic hydrogen production. Owing to its high charge carrier mobility and tunable band gap, black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a potential photocatalyst. However, when using BP for photocatalytic hydrogen production individually, the inherent instability and light-harvesting capability greatly restricted the further application, as well as the fast photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Herein, a novel heterostructured photocatalyst BP-MoO3-x was prepared via the direct ball-milling method for H-2 photogeneration. The result demonstrated that coupling BP with the localized surface plasmonic defective MoO3-x through covalent Mo-P bond improves the chemical stability, enables the visible-to-near infrared photons to harvest, and promotes the photogenerated carrier separation. As a result, the BP-MoO3-x could deliver high photocatalytic hydrogen production rates of 396.3 and 156.4 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1) under visible and near-infrared lights, which are similar to 40 and 80 times higher than that of BP without any sacrificial agent, respectively. Furthermore, the BP-MoO3-x also shows good stability under visible light irradiation from cycle stability testing. Combining with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic effect of Z-scheme BP-MoO3- x heterostructure and strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhances light-harvesting capacity and improves the photoexcited charge transfer efficiency.

Abstract:Black phosphorus-based two-dimensional heterostructure photocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their prominent photocatalytic performance. However, theoretical analysis on the mechanism of photocatalytic activity is still lacking. Firstly, we comprehensively analyzed the structural and electronic properties of BP/BiVO4(010) heterostructure. It is found that the BP/BiVO4(010) composite was a stable interface and formed a type-II heterostructure. The density of states, Bader charge, and charge density difference were elucidated and the results show that the BiVO4(010) slab can act as a protect and supporting layer to protect monolayer BP from oxidation and deformation while still maintaining its electronic properties. In addition, the BP/BiVO4(010) is forming a built-in electric field from BP to BiVO4, which facilitate the separation of e−/h + pair at the BP/BiVO4 interface and enable the water with a high redox potential. These results provide monolayer BP-based composite photocatalysts and insightful understanding of the physical mechanism of this new synthesized system.

Abstract:The use of black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets has attracted much attention in the area of photocatalysis owing to the thickness-tunable bandgap and high carrier mobility. In order to improve the stability of BP nanosheets, poly dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) is used to passivate the BP nanosheets and change its surface properties. The present study concerns the development of a facile electrostatic assembly method for the construction of a Z-scheme system consisting of PDDA-functionalized BP nanosheets and layered BiOI in order to enhance visible light adsorption and promote electron-hole separation. The morphology, structure and photoelectrochemical properties of the composites are thoroughly characterized and the photocatalytic performances of all the samples were assessed under visible light irradiation. The 5-F-BP/BiOI exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity with removal efficiencies of 97.6% and 90.0% for methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC), respectively. Superoxide radicals (·O2-) were found to be the main organic decomposition products according to species trapping experiments. The photocatalyst presents favorable stability after three catalytic cycles. This study provides new insights into the design of highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts based on functionalized BP nanosheets in order to meet environmental demands.

Abstract:As an emerging post-graphene two-dimensional material, black phosphorus (BP) has attracted enormous interest as a promising cocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution, however, the activity of either pristine bulk or BP nanosheets is far from satisfactory. Herein, we present an effective strategy to greatly boost the H2 evolution performance of BP via applying the synergistic effect of heterojunction and interfacial lattice strain. A multilayered heterostructure coupling BP nanosheets and nickel oxide (NiO) nanosheets with abundant interface P-Ni and PO bonds is synthesized and utilized as a proof-of-concept material for our design. Both the experimental and theoretical results have revealed that the strain is formed in BP-NiO multilayered heterostructure. The generated lattice strain induces the charge redistribution at the interface between BP and NiO, which leads to the improved electron transfer efficiency and favorable H* adsorption kinetics for photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction. As a result, the BP-NiO heterostructure with strain effect exhibits much enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution activity in the presence of Eosin Y (EY) as photosensitizer, exceeding that of zero-strained BP/NiO heterostructure and many other reported noble-metal-free cocatalyst.

Abstract:Janus MoSSe monolayer with built-in electric dipole, as another emerging two-dimensional (2D) material after MoS2, is predicted to be an ideal photocatalyst for overall water splitting. However, in spite of the excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Se-surface, the extremely poor oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of S-surface hinders the achievement of photocatalytic overall water splitting. Herein, we construct a new 2D van der Waals heterostructure consisting of high-OER-active black phosphorus (BP) and Janus MoSSe monolayer, and demonstrate a new strategy of Janus BP/SMoSe heterostructure to achieve wide-spectral-responsive photocatalytic overall water splitting. The electronic structures and optical properties of two different heterostructures, BP/SMoSe and BP/SeMoS, are systematically investigated via first principles density, exhibiting a type-II band arrangement. Unlike BP/SeMoS, the BP/SMoSe heterostructure shows excellent optical properties, such as a large dielectric constant of 8.14 and a small optical absorption boundary of 0.10 eV. Furthermore, BP/SMoSe heterostructure possesses greater light absorption intensity and a broader light absorption range. It is found that the BP/SMoSe heterostructure exhibits proper band alignment and enhanced intrinsic dipole, which is favorable to obtain high electron-hole separation efficiency. This work provides a feasible strategy of 2D Janus BP/SMoSe heterostructure for approaching almost perfect overall water-splitting photocatalysis.

Abstract:Photocatalytic performance is significantly influenced by the efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation and transfer. In this paper, rational designed Z-scheme Bi/Black Phosphorus Nanosheets/P-doped BiOCl (Bi/BPNs/P-BiOCl) nanoflower photocatalyst was synthesized by a facile in-situ reduction process. The interfacial P-P bond between Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) and P-doped BiOCl (P-BiOCl) was investigated by the XPS spectrum. The Bi/BPNs/P-BiOCl photocatalysts exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance for H2O2 production and RhB degradation. The optimally modified photocatalyst (Bi/BPNs/P-BiOCl-20) showed an excellent photocatalytic H2O2 generation rate of 4.92 mM/h and RhB degradation rate of 0.1169 min-1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which was 1.79 times and 1.25 times greater than the P-P bond free Bi/BPNs/BiOCl-20. The mechanism was investigated through charge transfer route, radical capture experiments, and band gap structure analysis, indicating that the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions and interfacial P-P bond not only enhances the redox potential of the photocatalyst but also facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated electrons-holes. This work might provide a promising strategy for constructing Z-scheme 2D composite photocatalysts combining interfacial heterojunction and elemental doping engineering for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production and organic dye pollutant degradation.
Fabrication of black phosphorus nanosheets/BiOBr visible light photocatalysts via the co-precipitation method

Abstract:The novel photocatalyst capable of utilizing the full spectrum of solar energy has attracted the attention of researchers. Black phosphorus (BP), as a rising star in an assortment of 2D materials, possesses a broadband absorption due to its tunable direct bandgap, which makes it a candidate photocatalyst. In our work, poly dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) is used to passivate BP nanosheets (BPNs) to improve its stability. Further, the functionalized BPNs and BiOBr are combined by a one-step co-precipitation method to form nanocomposites. The successful formation of nanocomposites obviously promoted the possibilities for the carrier transporting between BiOBr and BPNs, and effectively hindered the recombination of carriers, which is confirmed by all manner of characterization. Meanwhile, nanocomposites have enhanced light absorption and relatively large specific surface area, which also has a gain in its photocatalytic activity. The as-prepared nanocomposite photocatalysts significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity with the best degradation effect of 14 and 3.4 times than pure BiOBr towards degradation of methylene orange (MO) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), respectively, under visible light. To get clear proofs of the photocatalytic mechanism, the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photocurrents, electrochemical impedance spectra and Mott-Schottky measurements et al. were employed and the type-I band alignment was proposed. This finding provides an easily synthesis and effective way of BP/semiconductor photocatalysts and demonstrates a new perspective for designing novel solar light driven photocatalysts.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) has recently emerged as a versatile photocatalyst owing to its unique photophysical properties and tunable bandgap. Nonetheless, the rapid recombination of the photogenerated charges of pristine BP samples has significantly hindered its practical applications in photocatalysis. Herein, we report, for the first time, the effect of transition metal nanoparticles (Ni and Co) as co-catalysts on the photocatalytic activity of BP/tungsten disulfide (WS2) binary heterojunctions (BP/WS2-TM (TM: Ni, Co)) in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Ternary heterojunctions named BP/WS2-TM (TM: Ni, Co) were synthesized via a chemical reduction method, leading to the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction, in which BP acts as a reduction catalyst and WS2 serves as an oxidation catalyst. BP/WS2-Ni and BP/WS2-Co performed substantial amounts of hydrogen generation of 9.53 mmol h−1g−1 and 12.13 mmol h−1g−1, respectively. Moreover, BP/WS2-Co exhibited about 5 and 15 times higher photocatalytic activity compared to the binary BP/WS2 heterojunctions and pristine BP, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction catalysts is attributed to the extended light absorption ability, enhanced charge separation, and larger active sites. This study is the first example of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water by using Ni- and Co-doped binary BP/WS2 heterojunctions.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) as an uprising two-dimensional material exhibits attractive potential in the field of electrocatalysis due to the inherent advantages of high carrier mobility and abundant lone pair electrons. However, the exposed active electrons compel BP to be deactivated by oxidative degradation. Herein, the electronic signature of acceptor-donor heterointerfacial interactions between BP and Co3O4 is realized via wet ball milling. The preferential migration of active electrons from BP to Co3O4 is achieved at the heterointerface since the Fermi level of BP is higher than that of Co3O4. Such relative energetic consideration promotes reasonable oxygen electrocatalytic active sites. Moreover, it significantly suppresses the oxidative degradation of BP. Consequently, the resulting Co3O4/BP heterojunction possesses superior oxygen bifunctional electrocatalytic activity than its parent catalysts. Most importantly, this work promotes an efficient route towards BP-based multifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:A direct Z-scheme heterostructure holds a unique advantage in solar-driven overall water splitting, while the rational design of efficient photocatalysts for water splitting in such heterostructures remains a challenge. Based on first-principles calculations, this study proposes a novel direct Z-scheme two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure photocatalyst, denoted as BS/PtO2. Its band edges match the oxidation-reduction potentials of water, satisfying the conditions for the oxidation and reduction of water. Under acidic conditions (pH = 0), the results of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) indicate that BS/PtO2 can drive the OER without the need for an external bias, while the HER requires catalytic assistance. Interestingly, compared to single-layer materials, this heterostructure exhibits a significant enhancement in visible light absorption, implying a more efficient solar energy conversion capability. Therefore, the BS/PtO2 heterostructure holds the potential to become a promising direct Z-scheme photocatalyst with efficient visible light activity.
