Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs), which generate vivid colors from periodic physical structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-scale PC films with high mechanical performance. To address the challenge, a new strategy to fabricate PC films from soft structured latex particles instead of widely used hard particles is reported. The soft latex particles are designed to have a three-layer structure: a responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) corona, hard polystyrene (PSt) shell and soft poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) core. Such latex particles with easily-tunable and well-defined structures are synthesized from RAFT emulsion polymerization. Thanks to the softness, PCs can be easily achieved by latex casting on various substrates without pre-treatment, leading to a dense, crack-free, and mechanically robust PC film. The as-prepared PC films of the particles with PnBA around 55 wt% can generate vivid colors when the "inks" of water and hydrophilic liquids are applied. The full colors can be achieved by tuning particle size or pH value. Taking advantage of the responsive properties to hydrophilic liquids with different volatilities, both temporary and permanent patterns can be constructed on the PC films, leading to spatio-temporal colorful patterns. The method is simple, scalable-up, and versatile, showing great potentials for practical applications.
3D-architected gratings for polarization-sensitive, nature-inspired structural color

Abstract:Structural coloration, a color-generation mechanism often found in nature, arises from light-matter interactions such as diffraction, interference and scattering, with micro- and nanostructured elements. Herein, we systematically study anisotropic, 3D-architected grating structures with polarization-tunable optical properties, inspired by the vivid blue of Morpho butterfly wings. Using two-photon lithography, we fabricate multilayered gratings, varying parameters such as height (through scanning speed and laser power), periodicity, and number of layers. In transmission, significant color transitions from blue to brown were identified when varying structural parameters and incident light polarization conditions (azimuthal angle and ellipticity). Based on thin film diffraction efficiency theory in the Raman-Nath regime, optical characterization results are analytically explained, evaluating the impact of each parameter variation. Overall, these findings contribute to technological implementations of polarization-sensitive, 3D-architected gratings for structural color applications.

Abstract:The rings, spots and stripes found on some butterflies, Pachyrhynchus weevils, and many chameleons are notable examples of natural organisms employing photonic crystals to produce colorful patterns. Despite advances in nanotechnology, we still lack the ability to print arbitrary colors and shapes in all three dimensions at this microscopic length scale. Commercial nanoscale 3D printers based on two-photon polymerization are incapable of patterning photonic crystal structures with the requisite ~300 nm lattice constant to achieve photonic stopbands/ bandgaps in the visible spectrum and generate colors. Here, we introduce a means to produce 3D-printed photonic crystals with a 5x reduction in lattice constants (periodicity as small as 280 nm), achieving sub-100-nm features with a full range of colors. The reliability of this process enables us to engineer the bandstructures of woodpile photonic crystals that match experiments, showing that observed colors can be attributed to either slow light modes or stopbands. With these lattice structures as 3D color volumetric elements (voxels), we printed 3D microscopic scale objects, including the first multi-color microscopic model of the Eiffel Tower measuring only 39-microns tall with a color pixel size of 1.45 microns. The technology to print 3D structures in color at the microscopic scale promises the direct patterning and integration of spectrally selective devices, such as photonic crystal-based color filters, onto free-form optical elements and curved surfaces.
Wide Gamut, Angle-Insensitive Structural Colors Based on Deep-Subwavelength Bilayer Media

Abstract:Abstract Wide gamut and angle-insensitive structural colors are highly desirable for many applications. Herein, a new type of lithography-free, planar bilayer nanostructures for generating structural colors is presented, which is basically composed of a deep-subwavelength, highly absorbing dielectric layer on an opaque metallic substrate. Experimental results show that a galaxy of brilliant structural colors can be generated by our structures, and which can cover ∼50% of the standard red–green–blue color space by adjusting the nanostructure dimensions. The color appearances are robust with respect to the angle of vision. Theoretical partial reflected wave analyses reveal that the structural color effect is attributed to the strong optical asymmetric Fabry–Perot-type (F–P-type) thin-film resonance interference. The versatility of the structural color properties as well as the simplicity of their fabrication processes make this bilayer structures very promising for various applications, such as security marking, information encryption, and color display, etc.
Stacking of Colors in Exfoliable Plasmonic Superlattices.

Abstract:Color printing with plasmonic resonators can overcome limitations in pigment-based printing approaches. While layering in pigment-based prints results in familiar color mixing effects, the color effects of stacking plasmonic resonator structures have not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate an experimental strategy to fabricate a 3-tiered complex superlattice of nanostructures with multiple sets of building blocks. Laser interference lithography was used to fabricate the nanostructures and a thin-layer of aluminum was deposited to introduce plasmonic colors. Interestingly, the structures exhibited drastic color changes when the layers of structures were sequentially exfoliated. Our theoretical analysis shows that the colors of the superlattice nanostructure were predominantly determined by the plasmonic properties of the two topmost layers. These results suggest the feasibility of the sub-wavelength vertical stacking of multiple plasmonic colors for applications in sensitive tamper-evident seals, dense 3D barcoding, and substrates for plasmonic color laser printing.

Abstract:The unique hierarchical microstructures of the Morpho butterfly wing (MBW) exhibit angle independent blue iridescence. Biomimicking these microstructures and turning them into functional photonic crystals (PhCs) have fascinated scientists yet remain challenging. Here, a phototunable PhC is fabricated by depositing the azobenzene‐containing linear liquid crystal polymer (LLCP) onto the MBW template. Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties and deformability of LLCP, the generated 3D bilayer microstructures demonstrate hierarchical deformation upon UV light irradiation, leading to a blueshift of the reflection peak (70 nm) and a remarkable change of reflectance (40%). This phototunable PhC may have potential applications in pigments, cosmetics, and sensors.

Abstract:A novel approach for producing cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers with vibrant structural colors using solvent‐cast direct‐ink‐writing is presented. By leveraging this scalable and versatile technique, the ability to create complex and intricate patterns, as well as bionic robots such as a butterfly and a flower, which are responsive to magnetic fields and thermal stimuli is demonstrated. Resolution control and expansibility have always been challenges to the fabrication of structural color materials. Here, a facile strategy to print cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) into complex structural color patterns with variable resolution and enhanced expansibility is reported. A volatile solvent is introduced into the synthesized CLC oligomers, modifying its rheological properties and allowing direct‐ink‐writing (DIW) under mild conditions. The combination of printing shear flow and anisotropic deswelling of ink drives the CLC molecules into an ordered cholesteric arrangement. The authors meticulously investigate the influence of printing parameters to achieve resolution control over a wide range, allowing for the printing of multi‐sized 1D or 2D patterns with constant quality. Furthermore, such solvent‐cast direct‐ink‐writing (DIW) strategy is highly expandable and can be integrated easily into the DIW of bionic robots. Multi‐responsive bionic butterfly and flower are printed with biomimetic in both locomotion and coloration. Such designs dramatically reduced the processing difficulty of precise full‐color printing and expanded the capability of structural color materials to collaborate with other systems.

In article number 2303256 by Bo Zhang, Dezhi Tan, Jianrong Qiu, and co‐workers report the achievement of an unprecedented facile voxel‐level programmable 3D structural coloration in bulk lithium niobate crystals. Micro/nano‐scale color voxels can be quickly inscribed into any spatial position of the matrix in one step. This principle is anticipated to boost the applications of structural coloration in 3D displays, encryption, anti‐counterfeiting, and data storage.

Abstract:Multilayer grating structures, such as those found on the wings of the butterfly Cynandra opis, are able to interact with light to generate structural coloration. When illuminated and viewed at defined angles, such structural color is characterized by exceptional purity and brightness. To provide further insight into the mechanism of structural coloration, two-photon laser lithography is used to fabricate bioinspired bigrating nanostructures, whose optical properties may be controlled by variation of the height and period of the grating features. Through the use of both spectral measurements and finite-element method simulations, herein specific feature dimensions are identified that due to the combined effects of multilayer interference and diffraction generate excellent spectral characteristics and high color purity over the entire visible range. Additionally, it is demonstrated that variation of feature period and/or height plays a central role in controlling both hue and purity. Importantly, such tuneable bigrating structures are of significant utility in color filtering applications.

Abstract:Vivid structural colors, inspired by butterflies, which can display iridescent colors dynamically when white light illuminates the surface with subwavelength period ripples, have attracted significant interest for its potential application in the fields of information storage, anti-counterfeiting, etc. However, there is still a huge demand for the development of multipattern dynamically transformable display surfaces using a versatile method. A new scheme based on femtosecond laser combined with variable polarization processing has been proposed. This scheme enables a surface with a structural color function that can be easily prepared by adjusting the polarization of the laser via a half-wave plate. Four types of structural units with designated periodic orientations are written on the same sample to exhibit four different colorful images. Through experiment and analysis, it is demonstrated that different colors can be displayed by changing the observation angle, and a multi-pattern display can be realized by rotating the sample. The lithography-free inscribed patterns show a strong azimuthal angular sensitivity to color and its brightness. This work demonstrates that femtosecond laser surface structuring provides a versatile platform to create various micro/nanostructures on a solid surface, and this technique can be used for the biomimetic lithography-free processing of any material using ablation.

Abstract:It remains a challenge to directly print arbitrary three-dimensional shapes that exhibit structural colors at the micrometer scale. Woodpile photonic crystals (WPCs) fabricated <i>via</i> two-photon lithography (TPL) are elementary building blocks to produce 3D geometries that generate structural colors due to their ability to exhibit either omnidirectional or anisotropic photonic stop bands. However, existing approaches produce structural colors on WPCs when illuminating from the top, requiring print resolutions beyond the limit of commercial TPL, which necessitates postprocessing techniques. Here, we devised a strategy to support high-order photonic cavity modes upon side illumination on WPCs that surprisingly generate prominent reflectance peaks in the visible spectrum. Based on that, we demonstrate one-step printing of 3D photonic structural colors without requiring postprocessing or subwavelength features. Vivid colors with reflectance peaks exhibiting a full width at half-maximum of ∼25 nm, a maximum reflectance of 50%, a gamut of ∼85% of sRGB, and large viewing angles were achieved. In addition, we also demonstrated voxel-level manipulation and control of colors in arbitrary-shaped 3D objects constituted with WPCs as unit cells, which has potential for applications in dynamic color displays, colorimetric sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and light-matter interaction platforms.

Abstract:Structural colors are produced by the diffraction of light from microstructures. The collective arrangement of substructures is a simple and cost-effective approach for structural coloration represented by colloidal self-assembly. Nanofabrication methods enable precise and flexible coloration by processing individual nanostructures, but these methods are expensive or complex. Direct integration of desired structural coloration remains difficult because of the limited resolution, material-specificity, or complexity. Here, we demonstrate three-dimensional printing of structural colors by direct writing of nanowire gratings using a femtoliter meniscus of polymer ink. This method combines a simple process, desired coloration, and direct integration at a low cost. Precise and flexible coloration is demonstrated by printing the desired structural colors and shapes. In addition, alignment-resolved selective reflection is shown for displayed image control and color synthesis. The direct integration facilitates structural coloration on various substrates, including quartz, silicon, platinum, gold, and flexible polymer films. We expect that our contribution can expand the utility of diffraction gratings across various disciplines such as surface-integrated strain sensors, transparent reflective displays, fiber-integrated spectrometers, anticounterfeiting, biological assays, and environmental sensors.

Abstract:Structural colors are produced by wavelength-dependent scattering of light from nanostructures. While living organisms often exploit phase separation to directly assemble structurally colored materials from macromolecules, synthetic structural colors are typically produced in a two-step process involving the sequential synthesis and assembly of building blocks. Phase separation is attractive for its simplicity, but applications are limited due to a lack of robust methods for its control. A central challenge is to arrest phase separation at the desired length scale. Here, we show that solid-state polymerization-induced phase separation can produce stable structures at optical length scales. In this process, a polymeric solid is swollen and softened with a second monomer. During its polymerization, the two polymers become immiscible and phase separate. As free monomer is depleted, the host matrix resolidifies and arrests coarsening. The resulting PS-PMMA composites have a blue or white appearance. We compare these biomimetic nanostructures to those in structurally-colored feather barbs, and demonstrate the flexibility of this approach by producing structural color in filaments and large sheets.
Structural Color Modulation by Controllable Fabricating of Two-Dimensional Metal Nanoarrays

Abstract:The structural coloration of two-dimensional photonic crystals has always been a hot topic in recent research. However, how to control the arrangement of nano particles in two-dimensional periodic structure so as to produce specific hue of structural colors with stable physical properties, have become key research content. In order to overcome this drawback, a method of utilizing plasma etching treatment to create structural color modulation on two-dimensional colloidal crystal surfaces by changing the etching power has been proposed. Colors as orange red, yellow, green and blue are obtained with different plasma etching power on planar hexagonal packed structure. The effects of plasma etching power and sizes of PS particles on the optical properties are studied. As a result, the color of samples distributed counterclockwise around white point with increasing the plasma etching power on the a* - b* plane, and changed from orange to blue. Moreover, the diffraction spectrum is also experimentally investigated, and exceed the sRGB gamut boundary. This research can be used in the applications of green printing, anti-counterfeiting and other related fields with low cost.

Abstract:Structural color materials with the property of angle-independence have attracted increasing interest in recent years because of their applications in various research fields. In this paper, inspired by the anisotropic lattice microstructure of the Parides sesostris butterfly, we present a novel angle-independent structural material by simply doping spinous pollen particles into the colloidal crystal arrays to interfere their self-assembling process. The resultant composited materials have anisotropic close-packed colloidal crystal domains around the spikes of the pollens. These differently oriented domains could reflect the light to a wide range of viewing angles, and thus imparted the composite materials with the same wide angle of structural colors. Attractively, the materials were endowed with light-controlled reversible structural color changing behavior by incorporating photothermal responsive graphene-tagged hydrogels. These features of the bioinspired angle-independent structural color materials showed their potential values in constructing intelligent sensors, anti-counterfeiting barcode labels, and so on.
Wide-Gamut Biomimetic Structural Colors from Interference-Assisted Two-Photon Polymerization

Abstract:Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is an emerging direct laser writing technique for the fabrication of structural colors. However, its coloration ability is suppressed as the vertical resolution is up to several microns. To solve this issue, an interference-assisted TPP technique was employed. Laser interference at a highly reflective interface produced the periodic energy redistribution along the vertical direction, turning the laser voxel into multilayer structures and confirming this technology as a facile and robust method for precise control of its vertical feature size. Biomimetic structural colors (BSCs) inspired from the ridge-lamella configurations in the Morph butterflies were fabricated using this improved TPP technique. The coloration mechanisms of the multilayer interference from the lamella layers, the thin-film interference from the fusion of multilayers, and the hybrid situations were systematically studied. These BSC colors were grouped as pixel palettes with various TPP parameters corresponding to each other, and they spanned almost the entire standard red-green-blue color space. Moreover, under optimized conditions, it was possible to fabricate a 1 cm<sup>2</sup> area within 2.5 h. These features make interference-assisted TPP an ideal coloration method for practical applications, such as display, decoration, sensing, and so on.

Abstract:Advanced coloration method is of pivotal importance in science, technology, and engineering. However, three‐dimensional (3D) structural colors that are critical for emerging multi‐dimensional information representation and recording are rarely achievable. Here, we report on a facile voxel‐level programmable 3D structural coloration in the bulk lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystal. This is achieved by engineering wavelength‐selective interference between ordinary (O) and extraordinary (E) light in the crystal matrix. To induce effective phase contrast between O and E light for establishing the highly localized interference across the visible band, we revealed the presence of a pulse‐internal‐coupling effect in the single‐pulse ultrafast laser‐crystal interaction and thus developed an ultrafast laser‐induced micro‐amorphization (MA) strategy to manipulate local matrix structure. Consequently, micro‐nano‐scale colorful voxels can be fast inscribed into any spatial position of the crystal matrix in one step. We demonstrated that the colors can be flexibly manipulated and fast extracted in 3D space. Multi‐dimensional MA‐color data storage with large capacity, high writing and readout speed, long lifetime, and excellent stability under harsh conditions was achieved. The present principle enables multifunctional 3D structural coloration devices inside high‐refractive‐index transparent dielectrics and can serve as a general platform to innovate next‐generation information optics. Vivid colors with reflectance peaks exhibiting a full width at half maximum of ~25 nm, a maximum reflectance of 50%, gamut of ~85% of sRGB, and large viewing angles, were achieved. In addition, we also demonstrated voxel-level manipulation and control of colors in arbitrary-shaped 3D objects constituted with WPCs as unit cells, which has great potential for applications in dynamic color displays, colorimetric sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and light-matter interaction platforms.
Finely tunable dynamical coloration using bicontinuous micrometer-domains

Abstract:Nanostructures similar to those found in the vividly blue wings of Morpho butterflies and colorful photonic crystals enable structural color through constructive interference of light waves. Different from commonly studied structure-colored materials using periodic structures to manipulate optical properties, we report a previously unrecognized approach to precisely control the structural color and light transmission via a novel photonic colloidal gel without long-range order. Nanoparticles in this gel form micrometer-sized bicontinuous domains driven by the microphase separation of binary solvents. This approach enables dynamic coloration with a precise wavelength selectivity over a broad range of wavelengths extended well beyond the visible light that is not achievable with traditional methods. The dynamic wavelength selectivity is thermally tunable, reversible, and the material fabrication is easily scalable.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new form of nanostructures with Al film deposited on a patterned dielectric material for generating structural color, which is induced by local surface plasmonic resonant (LSPR) absorption in sub-wavelength-indented hole/ring arrays. Unlike other reported results obtained by using focus ion beam (FIB) to create metallic nanostructures, the nano-sized hole/ring arrays in Al film in this work are replicated by high resolution electron beam lithography (EBL) combined with self-aligned metallization. Clear structural color is observed and systematically studied by numerical simulations as well as optical characterizations. The central color is strongly related to the geometric size, which provides us with good opportunities to dye the colorless Al surface by controlling the hole/ring dimensions (both diameter and radius), and to open up broad applications in display, jewelry decoration, green production of packing papers, security code, and counterfeits prevention.
