Abstract:An overview of the complex kinetico-mechanistic behaviour of pyridine-appended tridentate NNS thiosemicarbazone (TSC) complexes of iron ([Fe III/II (TSC) 2 ] +/0 ) in substitution and oxidation processes, relevant to either biological activity or catalysis, is featured. In particular, the direct biological implication of the Fe III derivatives in redox processes including oxyhaemoglobin (HbO 2 ) oxidation is presented. The operation of an outer-sphere mechanism is interpreted as triggered by hydrogen bonding interactions between the HbO 2 units and the terminal N-derived functional groups of the TSC ligands on the Fe III centre. As a direct consequence, the reaction with molecular oxygen of the reduced Fe II derivatives with the same ligands is also reviewed. The [Fe II (TSC) 2 ] complexes oxidise to [Fe III (TSC) 2 ] + in a single kinetic step both in pure methanol and water solutions. However, activation parameters indicate a mechanistic shift from outer-sphere in methanol to inner-sphere in water. In contrast with O 2 , direct oxidation of the iron centre to the expected [Fe III (TSC) 2 ] + complexes does not occur in the reaction of the Fe II derivatives with H 2 O 2 in acetonitrile solution. Instead, a mixture of Fe II species maintaining the pivotal structure, with the incorporation of a variable number of oxygen atoms to the TSC backbone, is initially formed. These species are stable for rather long periods and they are capable of acting as oxygen atom shuttles to organic substrates. As a consequence, the complexes catalyse the oxidation of thioanisole to its sulfoxide and styrene to benzaldehyde, with clear differences between the mechanisms operating for the two processes being found again.
