Abstract:The chemistry of "frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs) has become a rapidly evolving field since it was introduced 6 years ago. It offers new strategies for small molecule activation and organic synthesis which have long been dominated by transition metals. This chapter focuses on the recent development of organoborane compounds and their applications in FLP chemistry. Modifying the organoboranes along with optimizing the Lewis base partners results in a wide range of reactivities, such as small molecule activation and hydrogenation catalysis.

Abstract:The zirconocene complex [{(C₆F₅)₂B-(CH₂)₃-Cp}(Cp-PtBu₂)ZrCl₂] (6; Cp=cyclo-C₅H₄) was prepared by hydroboration of [(allyl-Cp)(Cp-PtBu₂)ZrCl₂] (5) with HB(C₆F₅)₂ ("Piers' borane"). It represents a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) in which both the Lewis acid and the Lewis base were attached at the metallocene framework. Its reaction with 1-pentyne did not result in the 1,2-addition of or deprotonation reaction by the FLP, but rather in the 1,1-carboboration of the triple bond, thereby obtaining a Z/E mixture (1.2:1) of the respective organometallic substituted alkenes 7. The analogous reaction of 1-pentyne with the phosphorous-free system [{(C₆F₅)₂B-(CH₂)₃-Cp)}CpZrCl₂] (9) gave the respective 1,1-carboboration products ((Z)-10/(E)-10≈1.3:1).

Abstract:Two 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl-substituted 2-(lutidinyl)organoboranes (5a and 5b) were prepared. These complexes can function as intramolecular vicinal B/N frustrated Lewis pairs to heterolytically activate dihydrogen. When these complexes were treated with HBpin, two different reaction pathways took place. Whereas the reaction between 5a and HBpin affords a formal ligand-redistribution product, the reaction of 5b with HBpin leads to a dearomative dehydroborylation product.

Abstract:The paper presents a new method for the formation of B-N bond by the catalytic insertion of nitrenes into organic boranes. The reaction proceeds most selectively for cyclic boranes with 2-phenylpyridine framework and nitrenes generated in situ by oxidation sulfonamides and sulfamates. The most effective catalysts for the process are rhodium and ruthenium carboxylates of [M2(OOCR)4]X type. Complexes with NTTL ligands derived from S-tert-leucine provide chiral products with stereogenic boron atoms. The developed approach can be useful for the introduction of boron heterocycles into functional materials and biologically active molecules.

Abstract:A stable dialkylphosphinyl radical reacted with bromoboranes to afford the corresponding phosphinoboranes accompanied with a bromophosphine under neutral condition at room temperature. The obtained phosphinoboranes have almost planar structures and have an effective P–B dative π-bond. The formation of phosphinoboranes would proceed via coordination-induced bromine abstraction from bromoboranes as a pivotal step, which was supported by the computational study. Abstract:Frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry has undergone remarkable growth, among which rare-earth metal-based Lewis pairs have exhibited unique reactivity in recent years. Herein, treatment of the intramolecular Sc/P Lewis pair, i.e., (ArO)2ScN(tBu)PPh2 (1, Ar = 2,6-tBu2-C6H3), with pyridotetrazole resulted in the formation of an FLP nitrene adduct with N2 elimination, offering additional insights into the mechanism of transition-metal-catalyzed denitrogenative annulation of pyridotetrazole. Reactions of complex 1 with 1,3,5-triazine and benzo[c]cinnoline generated FLP-type products via Sc/P 1,2-addition to the C=N bond and the N=N bond, respectively. Furthermore, treatments of 1 with phenylacetylene, diazo, and azide compounds were also investigated, leading to the formation of a variety of metallacyclic complexes displaying typical FLP behaviors.

Abstract:The reaction of boroles with organic azides is known to straightforwardly yield 1,2‐azaborinines, which have generated significant interest as benzene bioisosteres. In this work, this powerful synthetic pattern is extended to a variety of structurally and chemically diverse boron azides. It provides a general, powerful borylation method to expand the chemistry of 1,2‐azaborinines, yielding boryl‐substituted 1,2‐azaborinines and 1,2‐azaborinine‐functionalized BN heteroarenes. The reaction of boroles with organic azides is known to straightforwardly yield 1,2‐azaborinines, which have generated significant interest as benzene bioisosteres. Abstract:Boron-nitrogen-hydrogen compounds have been investigated and developed very fast in last decades caused by its excellent hydrogen-storage performances. The bottleneck problem hindering its application is the irreversibility after its dehydrogenation. However, the traditional B-N (or B-P) bond can be hindered by connecting with large steric hindrances, which results in the possible reversible hydrogenation-dehydrogenation properties. In this research, we analyse the structural characters based on the experiments to obtain the required electronic structure properties for realizing the reversibility of FLPs in the hydrogenation (or dehydrogenation).

Abstract:Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been increasingly utilized as metal-free catalysts for manufacturing pharmaceutical and agricultural products with strict control of metal residues. However, the moisture sensitivity and homogeneity of typical FLPs significantly inhibit their practical applications and, meanwhile, stimulate the development of heterogeneous catalysts capable of addressing these issues. In this work, we report a flexible approach to fabricate borane–nitrogen containing phenolic organic microspheres (BNPs), severing as a new, moisture-tolerant, and bench-stable heterogeneous FLP catalyst for molecular hydrogen activation for selective hydrogenation of structurally diverse terminal alkynes to the respective alkenes. Mechanistic studies further revealed a heterolytic hydrogen splitting process, in which the in situ formation of active hydroborane species was involved. Given the wild applicability of FLP, our protocol, thus, paves a way for advancing BNPs as a new member of the heterogeneous FLP family for catalysis.

Abstract:The frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) derived from tBu(3)P and E(C6F5)(3) (E = B, Al) react with pO(2)C(6)Cl(4) and Ph3SnH to give [tBu(3)POC(6)Cl(4)OE(C6F5)(3)] (E = B 1, Al 2), [tBu(3)PSnPh(3)][HB(C6F5)(3)](3), and [tBu(3)PSnPh(3)][(m-H)(Al(C6F5)(3))(2)] 4. These products form via the accepted two-electron process involving a transient "encounter complex.'' In contrast, the corresponding reactions of Mes(3)P and E(C6F5)(3) (E = B, Al) with pO(2)C(6)Cl(4) give [(Mes(3)POC(6)Cl(4)OE(C6F5)(3)] (E = B 8, Al 9); however, the identification of the intermediates [Mes(3)P center dot](2) [(C6F5)(3)EOC6Cl4OE(C6F5)(3)] (E = B 5, Al 6) supports a mechanism that proceeds via a single-electron transfer process. This is further supported by the reactions of Mes(3)P and E(C6F5)(3) (E = B, Al) with Ph3SnH, which yielded [Mes(3)PH] [HB(C6F5)(3)] 10 and [Mes(3)PH][(m-H)(Al(C6F5)(3))(2)] 11, respectively, with the concurrent formation of Ph3SnSnPh3.

Abstract:A new class of Lewis base stabilized formoxyboranes demonstrates the feasibility of catalytic transfer hydroboration. In the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, they have shown broad applicability for reducing carbonyl compounds. Various borylated alcohols are obtained in high selectivity and yields up to 99%, tolerating several functional groups. Computational studies enabled to propose a mechanism for this transformation, revealing the role of the ruthenium catalyst and the absence of hydroborane intermediates.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide radical anion [CO2•] is a highly reactive species of fundamental and synthetic interest. However, the direct one-electron reduction of CO2 to generate [CO2•] occurs at very negative reduction potential that is often a limiting factor for applications. Here, we show that NHC-CO2-BR3 species – generated from Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) - type activation of CO2 by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) and boranes (BR3) – undergo single electron reduction at less negative potential than free CO2. A net gain of more than one volt was notably measured with a CAAC-CO2-B(C6F5)3 adduct, which was chemically reduced to afford [CAAC-CO2-B(C6F5)3•]. This room temperature stable radical anion was characterized by EPR spectroscopy and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Of particular interest, DFT calculations showed that, thanks to the electron withdrawing properties of the Lewis acid, significant unpaired spin density is localised on the carbon atom of the CO2 moiety. Finally, these species were shown to exhibit analogous reactivity as carbon dioxide radical anion [CO2•] toward DMPO. This work demonstrates the advantage provided by FLP systems in the generation and stabilization of [CO2•]-like species.

Abstract:Here we report the in situ generation of nucleophilic allylboranes from H2 and allenes mediated by a pyridonate borane that displays frustrated-Lewis-pair reactivity. Experimental and computational mechanistic investigations reveal that upon H2 activation, the covalently bound pyridonate substituent becomes a datively bound pyridone ligand. Dissociation of the formed pyridone borane complex liberates Piers borane and enables a hydroboration of the allene. The allylboranes generated in this way are reactive towards nitriles. A catalytic protocol for the formation of allylboranes from H2 and allenes and the allylation of nitriles has been devised. This catalytic reaction is a conceptually new way to use molecular H2 in organic synthesis.

Abstract:The borylation of aryl substituted pyridines is an effective way of preparing B-N doped conjugated organic frameworks. Trihaloborane Lewis acids are often employed for this protocol, and may require further functionalization to replace the remaining halides on boron. We report a new, fully characterized, electrophilic borylating agent, (C6F5)2B(2-NTf2), that smoothly incorporates a -B(C6F5)2 unit into the model substrate 2-phenylpyridine. To demonstrate its utility in preparing more complex B-N doped structures, we use it to prepare seven examples of the 6a,13a-diaza-7,14-dibora-dibenzo[a,h]pyrene framework, with substituents of varying donor properties. The structural, redox and photophysical properties of this new family of B-N doped polycyclic hydrocarbon compounds were probed experimentally and computationally.
