Abstract:A facile environmentally friendly synthesis of bezaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde analogs from readily available toluene derivatives is described. Oxidation of the styrylamines by H(2)O(2) affords benzaldehydes in moderate yields, while the hydrolysis of styrylamines afforded phenylacetaldehyde analogs in good yields.

Abstract:A new green synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide was described. The use of ethylene oxide, strong acid resin, and solid supported phosphotungstic acid made the process green and feasible to industrialize. The optimal condition was selected in the experiments. The total yield was 80.5% and it was eco-friendly. The catalysts were easy to recycle. According to the experiments, the oxidation mechanism was assumed to follow the complex–oxidation–decomplex fashion.

Abstract:A series of chiral tridentate ligands derived from readily available enantiopure l-proline were designed and synthesized. The ligands together with Cu(OAc)2 were successfully used in asymmetric Henry reactions. Various structurally divergent aldehydes and nitromethane were converted into versatile β-nitro alcohols in MeOH at room temperature with very good yields (up to 85%) and enantioselectivities (up to 86%).

Abstract:Chiral N-oxide salen ligands and their corresponding Al complexes were synthesized. Notably, the catalytic activity and asymmetric induction ability of the bifunctional N-oxide salen-Al for asymmetric cyanosilylation were compared with that of bi-component catalyst system including chiral pyrrolidine salen–Al complex and Ph3PO. Interestingly, introducing N-oxide group in salen unit could enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of bifunctional catalyst without further adding Ph3PO as co-catalyst and inverse configurations were generated from the two systems. In addition, excellent yields and high ee values could be obtained under milder conditions in bifunctional catalyst system compared with that of bi-component catalyst system.

Abstract:A facile method for the synthesis of thiochromanyl-spirooxindoles via sulfa-Michael/Aldol reaction of 3-ylideneoxindoles with thiosalicylaldehydes has been developed. This tandem reaction, which tolerates a wide variety of functional groups, furnished diverse substituted functional thiochromanyl-spirooxindples in up to 90% yields with good diastereoselectivities. Furthermore, the reaction system could be promoted to gram-scale efficiently under the mild conditions. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:(beta-Organochalcogenyl)allyl phenyl sulfoxides 2 were prepared by treatment of allenyl sulfoxides I with sodium organyl chalcogenolates in good yields. The reaction was regioselective, giving exclusively one isomer in all cases. The applications of (beta-phenyltelluro)allyl phenyl sulfoxide 2d and (beta-organosulfanyl)allyl phenyl sulfoxide 2m in organic synthesis were also described.

Abstract:A novel and transition metal-free synthesis of 3,4-dihydro-1,2-oxaphosphinine 2-oxides was developed. LiHMDS-mediated tandem Michael addition and nucleophilic substitution of readily available phosphonochloridates and chalcones afforded a variety of valuable 3,4-dihydro-1,2-oxaphosphinine 2-oxides bearing diverse functionalities in excellent yields and satisfactory to good diastereoselectivity (up to 99% yield and up to 99 : 1 dr).

Abstract:Sulfoxide is an important structural motif widely found in medicine, materials, chiral catalysis, and many other fields. The development of green and sustainable synthetic methods for their efficient preparation is of great significance. Herein, we have unraveled an electrochemical β-chlorosulfoxidation of alkenes, using the readily available thiols and hydrochloride as the limiting agents. This protocol features a simple operation, wide substrate scope, and good functionality compatibility. Notably, the thus obtained β-chlorosulfoxides have been shown to be versatile building blocks for the preparation of diverse functionalized β-sulfoxides.

Abstract:Reported herein is the FeCl3-promoted intermolecular sulfoesterification of o-(1-alkynyl)benzoates with disulfides, which provides a convenient and efficient method for synthesis of 4-sulfenylisocoumarins. Various functional groups such as methoxy, halides, ester, cyano and silicon groups in the substrates are tolerated, and heterocycle-fused chalcogenylpyrones are also successfully achieved directly from the corresponding heterocyclic precursors under the same reaction conditions. In addition, starting from diynylbenzoate, this reaction sequence can be combined with a bicyclization step leading to the tetracyclic (E)-3-(2-phenyl-3-phenylchalcogenylinden-1-ylidene)isobenzofuranone frameworks with high regiospecificity and exclusive trans stereoselectivity.

Abstract:A novel biscinchona alkaloid-catalyzed highly enantioselective desymmetrization reaction of bisphenol compounds with achiral Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonate agents was developed. Through the asymmetric allylic alkylation strategy, a broad range of optically active P-stereogenic phosphine oxides were generated with excellent to good yields (up to 99%) and high enantioselectivities (up to 98.5:1.5 e.r.). The reaction was further investigated by the linear free energy relationship (LFER) analysis. A possible transition state was proposed and furthered verified by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Reported here is a highly efficient Pd/Xiang-Phos catalyzed enantioselective carboetherification of alkenyl oximes with either aryl or alkenyl halides, delivering various chiral 3,5-disubstituted and 3,5,5-trisubstituted isoxazolines in good yields with up to 97 % ee. The sterically bulky and electron-rich (S,Rs)-NMe-X2 ligand is responsible for the excellent reactivities and enantioselectivities. The salient features of this transformation include mild reaction conditions, general substrate scope, good functional-group tolerance, good yields, high enantioselectivities, easy scale-up, and application in the late-stage modification of bioactive compounds. The obtained products can be readily transformed into useful chiral 1,3-aminoalcohols.

Abstract:Phenylseleno- and p-tolylsulfonyl substituted 1,3-dienes were conveniently prepared with high stereoselectivity by the elimination reaction of phenylseleno- and p-tolylsulfonyl substituted allyl alcohols in the presence of BF3·Et2O in acetic anhydride. The products were characterized by 1H NMR, MS, IR and elemental analysis. The single crystal structure of 2a was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:An four-component cascade cyclization reaction between readily available 2,4-pentanediones, primary amines and sodium sulfinates is reported. Highly functionalized 5-alkylidene-3-pyrrolin-2-ones were efficiently synthesized in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. This regioselective cascade cyclization was achieved by direct transformation of C(sp3)−H bonds at two weak nucleophilic sites in the enaminones structure, and two strong nucleophilic sites of the structure were not involved.

Abstract:Optically pure sulfoxides are valuable organosulfur compounds extensively employed in medicinal and organic synthesis. In this study, we present a biocatalytic oxidation‐reduction cascade system designed for the preparation of enantiopure sulfoxides. The system involves the cooperation of a low‐enantioselective chimeric oxidase SMO (styrene monooxygenase) with a high‐enantioselective reductase MsrA (methionine sulfoxide reductase A), facilitating "non‐selective oxidation and selective reduction" cycles for prochiral sulfide oxidation. The regeneration of requisite cofactors for MsrA and SMO was achieved via a cascade catalysis process involving three auxiliary enzymes, sustained by cost‐effective D‐glucose. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a series of heteroaryl alkyl, aryl alkyl and dialkyl sulfoxides in R configuration were synthesized through this "one‐pot, one step" cascade reaction. The obtained compounds exhibited high yields of >90% and demonstrated enantiomeric excess (ee) values exceeding 90%. This study represents an unconventional and efficient biocatalytic way in utilizing the low‐enantioselective oxidase for the synthesis of enantiopure sulfoxides.
