Abstract:Martin-Lof's definition of random sequences of cbits as those not belonging to any set of constructive zero Lebesgue measure is reformulated in the language of Algebraic Probability Theory. The adoption of the Pour-El Richards theory of computability structures on Banach spaces allows us to give a natural noncommutative extension of Martin-Lof's definition, characterizing the random elements of a chain Von Neumann algebra. In the particular case of the minimally informative noncommutative alphabet our definition reduces to the definition of a random sequence of qubits.

Abstract:This paper is a comment on the paper "Quantum Mechanics and Algorithmic Randomness" was written by Ulvi Yurtsever \cite{Yurtsever} and the briefly explanation of the algorithmic randomness of quantum measurements results. There are differences between the computability of probability sources, ( which means there is an algorithm that can define the way that random process or probability source generates the numbers ) and the algorithmic randomness of the sequences or strings which are produced by a source. We may have the source without a computable algorithm for that but it can produce compressible or incompressible strings. For example, so far there is no computable algorithm that can define the abstract meaning of randomness even the easiest one, Bernoulli probability distribution. Historically and philosophically there many scientist believe the existence of the algorithm for a random process is a contradiction because in their opinion, in the definition of a random variable, implicitly assumed that there is no reason for the happening of an event and we just know the probabilities. There is however no need to enter into this matter here. As in the paper mentioned, all the algorithms for simulating a random process try to pass the statistical tests and be close to the abstract meaning of it.

Abstract:We extend algorithmic information theory to quantum mechanics, taking a universal semicomputable density matrix (``universal probability'') as a starting point, and define complexity (an operator) as its negative logarithm. A number of properties of Kolmogorov complexity extend naturally to the new domain. Approximately, a quantum state is simple if it is within a small distance from a low-dimensional subspace of low Kolmogorov complexity. The von Neumann entropy of a computable density matrix is within an additive constant from the average complexity. Some of the theory of randomness translates to the new domain. We explore the relations of the new quantity to the quantum Kolmogorov complexity defined by Vitanyi (we show that the latter is sometimes as large as 2n - 2log n and the qubit complexity defined by Berthiaume, Dam and Laplante. The ``cloning'' properties of our complexity measure are similar to those of qubit complexity.

Abstract:The requisites for the persistence of small colonies of self-replicating molecules living in a two-dimensional lattice are investigated analytically in the infinite diffusion or mean-field limit and through Monte Carlo simulations in the position-fixed or contact process limit. The molecules are modeled by hipercyclic replicators A which are capable of replicating via binary fission A + E --2A with production rates s as well as via catalytically assisted replication 2A + E --3A with rate c. In addition, a molecule can degrade into its source materials E with rate $\gamma$. In the asymptotic regime the population can be characterized by the presence (active phase) and the absence (empty phase) of replicators in the lattice. In both diffusion regimes, we find that for small values of the ratio c/$\gamma$ these phases are separated by a second-order phase transition which is in the universality class of the directed percolation, while for small values s/$gamma$ the phase transition is of first order. Furthermore, we illustrate the suitability of the dynamic Monte Carlo method, which is based on the analysis of the spreading behaviour of a few active cells in the center of an otherwise infinite empty lattice, to adress the problem of emergence of replicators. Rather surprisingly, we show that this method allows an unambiguous identification of the order of the nonequilibrium phase transition.

Abstract:Quantum information is an interdisciplinary science involving quantum mechanics,information theory,and computer science.It is of strategic importance and has far-reaching influence.Born in the late 1970s,it has developed very fast since the mid-1990s.Quantum information science includes quantum computing,quantum communication,and so on.The combination of different branches of science has led to many new research topics in science and technology,and many remarkable achievements have been made.This paper will introduce the basics of quantum information science,including some very important quantum algorithms such as Shor's algorithm and Grover's algorithm.The former factorizes an integer in polynomial steps,while the latter finds a marked item with a square-root increase in speed compared to classical algorithms.Other recent studies of quantum algorithms will also be reviewed.

Abstract:A key concept of quantum information theory is that accessing information encoded in a quantum system requires us to discriminate between several possible states the system could be in. A natural generalization of this problem, namely, quantum sequence discrimination, appears in various quantum information processing tasks, the objective being to determine the state of a finite sequence of quantum states. Since such a sequence is a composite quantum system, the fundamental question is whether an optimal measurement is local, i.e., comprising measurements on the individual members, or collective, i.e. requiring joint measurement(s). In some known instances of this problem, the optimal measurement is local, whereas in others, it is collective. But, so far, a definite prescription based solely on the problem description has been lacking. In this paper, we prove that if the members of a given sequence are drawn secretly and independently from an ensemble or even from different ensembles, the optimum success probability is achievable by fixed local measurements on the individual members of the sequence, and no collective measurement is necessary. This holds for both minimum-error and unambiguous state discrimination paradigms.

Abstract:Quantum computation and quantum information are of great current interest in computer science, mathematics, physical sciences and engineering. They will likely lead to a new wave of technological innovations in communication, computation and cryptography. As the theory of quantum physics is fundamentally stochastic, randomness and uncertainty are deeply rooted in quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. Consequently quantum algorithms are random in nature, and quantum simulation utilizes Monte Carlo techniques extensively. Thus statistics can play an important role in quantum computation and quantum simulation, which in turn offer great potential to revolutionize computational statistics. While only pseudo-random numbers can be generated by classical computers, quantum computers are able to produce genuine random numbers; quantum computers can exponentially or quadratically speed up median evaluation, Monte Carlo integration and Markov chain simulation. This paper gives a brief review on quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. We introduce the basic concepts of quantum computation and quantum simulation and present quantum algorithms that are known to be much faster than the available classic algorithms. We provide a statistical framework for the analysis of quantum algorithms and quantum simulation.

Abstract:We extend algorithmic conservation inequalities to probability measures. The amount of self information of a probability measure cannot increase when submitted to randomized processing. This includes (potentially non-computable) measures over finite sequences, infinite sequences, and $T_0$, second countable topologies. One example is the convolution of signals over real numbers with probability kernels. Thus the smoothing of any signal due We show that given a quantum measurement, for an overwhelming majority of pure states, no meaningful information is produced.

Abstract:Quantum computers use the quantum interference of different computational paths to enhance correct outcomes and suppress erroneous outcomes of computations. A common pattern underpinning quantum algorithms can be identified when quantum computation is viewed as multi-particle interference. We use this approach to review (and improve) some of the existing quantum algorithms and to show how they are related to different instances of quantum phase estimation. We provide an explicit algorithm for generating any prescribed interference pattern with an arbitrary precision.
Unified Information Dynamic Analysis of Quantum Decision-Making and Search Algorithms: Computational Intelligence Measure

Abstract:There are important algorithms built upon a mixture of basic techniques described; for example, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) employs both Divide-and-Conquer and Transform-and-Conquer techniques. In this article, the evolution of a quantum algorithm (QA) is examined from an information theory viewpoint. The complex vector entering the quantum algorithmic gate - QAG is considered as an information source both from the classical and the quantum level. The analysis of the classical and quantum information flow in Deutsch-Jozsa, Shor and Grover algorithms is used. It is shown that QAG, based on superposition of states, quantum entanglement and interference, when acting on the input vector, stores information into the system state, minimizing the gap between classical Shannon entropy and quantum von Neumann entropy. Minimizing of the gap between Shannon and von Neumann entropies is considered as a termination criterion of QA computational intelligence measure.

A Comprehensive Review of Quantum Random Number Generators: Concepts, Classification and the Origin of Randomness

Abstract:Random numbers are central to cryptography and various other tasks. The intrinsic probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics has allowed us to construct a large number of quantum random number generators (QRNGs) that are distinct from the traditional true number generators. This article provides a review of the existing QRNGs with a focus on their various possible features (e.g., device independence, semi-device independence) that are not achievable in the classical world. It also discusses the origin, applicability, and other facets of randomness. Specifically, the origin of randomness is explored from the perspective of a set of hierarchical axioms for quantum mechanics, implying that succeeding axioms can be regarded as a superstructure constructed on top of a structure built by the preceding axioms. The axioms considered are: (Q1) incompatibility and uncertainty; (Q2) contextuality; (Q3) entanglement; (Q4) nonlocality and (Q5) indistinguishability of identical particles. Relevant toy generalized probability theories (GPTs) are introduced, and it is shown that the origin of random numbers in different types of QRNGs known today are associated with different layers of nonclassical theories and all of them do not require all the features of quantum mechanics. Further, classification of the available QRNGs has been done and the technological challenges associated with each class are critically analyzed. Commercially available QRNGs are also compared.

Abstract:Currently there are three major paradigms of quantum computation, the gate model, annealing, and walks on graphs. The gate model and quantum walks on graphs are universal computation models, while annealing plays within a specific subset of scientific and numerical computations. Quantum walks on graphs have, however, not received such widespread attention and thus the door is wide open for new applications and algorithms to emerge. In this paper we explore teaching a coined discrete time quantum walk on a regular graph a probability distribution. We go through this exercise in two ways. First we adjust the angles in the maximal torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ where $d$ is the regularity of the graph. Second, we adjust the parameters of the basis of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(d)$. We also discuss some hardware and software concerns as well as immediate applications and the several connections to machine learning.

Abstract:The purpose of this review is to present some of the latest developments using random techniques, and in particular, random matrix techniques in quantum information theory. Our review is a blend of a rather exhaustive review and of more detailed examples—coming mainly from research projects in which the authors were involved. We focus on two main topics, random quantum states and random quantum channels. We present results related to entropic quantities, entanglement of typical states, entanglement thresholds, the output set of quantum channels, and violations of the minimum output entropy of random channels.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the state of an unknown quantum sequence without error. The elements of the given sequence are drawn with equal probability from a known set of linearly independent pure quantum states with the property that their mutual inner products are all real and equal. This problem can be posed as an instance of unambiguous state discrimination where the states correspond to that of all possible sequences having the same length as the given one. We calculate the optimum probability by solving the optimality conditions of a semidefinite program. The optimum value is achievable by measuring individual members of the sequence, and no collective measurement is necessary.

Abstract:Quantum resources may provide advantage over their classical counterparts. Theoretically, in certain tasks, this advantage can be very high. In this work, we construct such a task based on a game, mediated by Referee and played between Alice and Bob. Referee sends Alice a value of a random variable. At the same time, Referee also sends Bob some partial information regarding that value. Here partial information can be defined in the following way. Bob gets the information of a random set which must contain the value of the variable, that is sent to Alice by the Referee, along with other value(s). Alice is not allowed to know what information is sent to Bob by the Referee. Again, Bob does not know which value of the random variable is sent to Alice. Now, the game can be won if and only if Bob can unambiguously identify the value of the variable, that is sent to Alice, with some nonzero probability, no matter what information Bob receives or which value is sent to Alice. However, to help Bob, Alice sends some limited amount of information to him, based on any strategy which is fixed by Alice and Bob before the game begins. We show that if Alice sends limited amount of classical information then the game cannot be won while the quantum analogue of the `limited amount of classical information' is sufficient for winning the game. Thus, it establishes quantum advantage. We further analyze several variants of the game and provide certain bounds on the success probabilities. Moreover, we establish connections between trine ensemble, mutually unbiased bases, and the encoding-decoding strategies of those variants. We also discuss the role of quantum coherence in the present context.

Each function is obtained as a limit of an infinite computation of a quantum Turing machine. The class of quantum computable functions is recursively enumerable, thus opening the door to a quantum computability theory which may follow some of the classical developments.
Simulation of quantum algorithms using classical probabilistic bits and circuits

Abstract:We discuss a new approach to simulate quantum algorithms using classical probabilistic bits and circuits. Each qubit (a two-level quantum system) is initially mapped to a vector in an eight dimensional probability space (equivalently, to a classical random variable with eight probabilistic outcomes). The key idea in this mapping is to store both the amplitude and phase information of the complex coefficients that describe the qubit state in the probabilities. Due to the identical tensor product structure of combining multiple quantum systems as well as multiple probability spaces, $n$ qubits are then mapped to a tensor product of $n$ 8-dimensional probabilistic vectors (i.e., the Hilbert space of dimension $2^n$ is mapped to a probability space of dimension $8^n$). After this initial mapping, we show how to implement the analogs of single-qubit and two-qubit gates in the probability space using correlation-inducing operations on these classical random variables. The key defining feature of both the mapping to the probability space and the transformations in this space (i.e., operations on the random variables) is that they are not linear, but instead affine. Using this architecture, the evolution of the $2^n$ complex coefficients of the quantum system can be tracked in the joint fully-correlated probabilities of the polynomial number of random variables. We then give specific procedures for implementing (1) the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, and (2) the Quantum Fourier Transform in the probability space. Identical to the Quantum case, simulating the Quantum Fourier Transform in the probability space requires $O(n)$ probabilistic bits and $O(n^2)$ (i.e., quadratic in the number of quantum bits) operations.

Abstract:Previously, Bennet and Feynman asked if Heisenberg's uncertainty principle puts a limitation on a quantum computer (Quantum Mechanical Computers, Richard P. Feynman, Foundations of Physics, Vol. 16, No. 6, p597-531, 1986). Feynman's answer was negative. In this paper, we will revisit the same question for the discrete time Fourier transform uncertainty principle. We will show that the discrete time Fourier transform uncertainty principle plays a fundamental role in showing that Shor's type of quantum algorithms has efficient running time and conclude that the discrete time uncertainty principle is an aid in our current formulation and understanding of Shor's type of quantum algorithms. It turns out that for these algorithms, the probability of measuring an element in some set $T$ (at the end of the algorithm) can be written in terms of the time-limiting and band-limiting operators from finite Fourier analysis. Associated with these operators is the finite Fourier transform uncertainty principle. The uncertainty principle provides a lower bound for the above probability. We will derive lower bounds for these types of probabilities in general. We will call these lower bounds quantum algorithm uncertainty principles or QAUP. QAUP are important because they give us some sense of the probability of measuring something desirable. We will use these lower bounds to derive Shor's factoring and discrete log algorithms.

Abstract:Basic concepts of quantum theory of information, principles of quantum calculations and the possibility of creation on this basis unique on calculation power and functioning principle device, named quantum computer, are briefly reviewed. The main blocks of quantum logic, schemes of implementation of quantum calculations, as well as some known today effective quantum algorithms, called to realize advantages of quantum calculations upon classical, are concerned. Among them special place is taken by Shor's algorithm of number factorization, Grover's algorithm of unsorted database search and, finally, the most promising in application methods of quantum phenomena simulation, particularly quantum chaos. The most perspective methods of experimental realization of quantum computer, namely nuclear-magnetic resonance and trapped ions realizations, are discussed. Phenomena of decoherence, its influence on quantum computer stability and methods of quantum error correction are described.

Abstract:In recent results, it has been proven that all sampling methods produce outliers. In this paper, we extend these results to quantum information theory. Projectors of large rank must contain pure quantum states in their images that are outlying states. Otherwise, the projectors are exotic, in that they have high mutual information with the halting sequence. Thus quantum coding schemes that use projections, such as Schumacher compression, must communicate using outlier quantum states.
