Steroids from the Roots of Periploca Sepium

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the steroids from the roots of Periploca sepium.METHODS Repeated Silica Gel, Sephadex LH-20 and ODS column chromatographic methods were used to isolate the chemical constituents.Modern NMR techniques were employed for their structural elucidation.RESULTS Seven compounds were isolated and identified as periplocogenin(1),21-O-methyl-△5-pregnene-3β,14β,17β,21-tetraol-20-one(2),△5-pregnene-3β,16α,20(S)-triol 20-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-digitalopy ranoside(3),△5-pregnene-3β,20(S)-diol 20-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside(4),△5-pregnene-3β,20(S)-diol 20-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-digitalopyranoside(5),△5-pregnene-3β,20(S)-diol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-20-O-β-D-gluco pyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside(6),△5-pregnene-3β,16β,20(R)-triol 20-O-β-D-gluco pyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-digitalopyranoside(7).CONCLUSION Compound 1 and 3 were new natural products, compound 4 was isolated from this plant for the first time,compound 6 was obtained for the first time from the genus Periploca.
