Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.

Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:A highly solid-emissive boron difluoride dye exhibiting polymorphism-dependent and mechanochromic luminescence has been synthesized. Three single-crystal X-ray structures of the polymorphic dye molecule, having different fluorescence emissions, are elucidated. Each polymorph displays different stacking orientations among their chromophore moieties and several different intermolecular interactions, which could be related to their different crystal emissions. The molecule displays piezochromic characteristics, with the fluorescence and quantum yield of both the solid powder and two kinds of crystals being reversibly adaptable to mechanical force and heating. The conversion between the monomer and pi-pi stacking-induced aggregate has been proposed as the mechanism behind the mechanochromism, according to X-ray diffraction measurements and differential scanning calorimetry analyses.

Abstract:Three D-pi-A 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with aggregation-induced emission characteristics were synthesized. The molecules comprise of a 4-(dimethylamino)styryl group as the electron donor group and different end groups, dicyanomethylene, vinylcyanoacetate, and 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione, as the electron acceptor, respectively. These target compounds display different stimulus responsive fluorescent properties in the solid state. The original samples with the dicyanomethylene and vinylcyanoacetate groups do not show fluorescence color changes in response to external force stimuli, whereas the compound containing the 2-methylene-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione unit exhibits reversible piezochromism and solvent-induced emission changes due to the transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states, which can be ascribed to their different molecular stacking mode in the solid state. Furthermore, these compounds show different acid/base-induced solid-state fluorescence switching properties due to the different sites of the protonation. When the crystal is irradiated by using ultraviolet light, it can achieve in‐situ fluorescence color changes from blue to chartreuse. During this process, the crystal does not undergo any chemical reaction, only the conformation and packing mode of the molecules are changed. Crystals can be melted under high‐power ultraviolet light due to the presence of photothermal effect.

Abstract:Organic fluorophores with reversible emission switching behavior are promising materials for applications in sensors, optical recording, security inks, and optoelectronics. A variety of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens with mechanochromic luminescence has been prepared, and the transformation of efficient bluer-emitting crystals to amorphous powders with redder and weaker emission is proposed to be the cause for such behavior. However, detailed mechanistic understanding from experimental to theoretical is lacking. In this work, we present the design and synthesis of a group of bis(diarylmethylene)dihydroanthracenes with butterfly-like shapes. These molecules exhibit aggregation-induced emission characteristics due to the restriction of intramolecular motion in the aggregated state. They show mechanochromism, because of the transformation between crystal and amorphous states with different colors and efficiencies aided by grinding/heating or solvent fuming processes. By investigation of their single-crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the loose molecular packing with noncovalent intermolecular interactions, the extent of conformational twisting, and the packing density of the luminogens, as well as freedom of intermolecular motion in the excited state, are stemmed for their reversible polymorphism-dependent emission behaviors.

Abstract:Deep-red (DR) and near-infrared (NIR) luminogens have witnessed powerful applications in various aspects in recent decades. However, their inevitably complicated structures not only bring tedious and time-consuming synthesis, but also lead to inherent difficult in crystallization which hinder the understanding of structure-emission relationship. Polymorphism represents an ingenious strategy for revealing unambiguous structure-emission relationships. Therefore, designing simple molecules to construct DR and NIR polymorphic emission is challenging yet highly desirable. Herein, multiple DR and NIR emission ranges from 624 to 742 nm is achieved in polymorphisms of an extremely simple g-conjugated luminogen. Multiple packing modes are simultaneously integrated into this compound. Its unique packing-dependent emission facilitates the establishment of clear packing-emission relationship. Increased intermolecular exciton coupling between adjacent molecules leads to gradually red-shifted emission from orange to DR and finally to NIR. The aggregation-induced emission feature of the molecule renders the bulk crystals with visible crystal-to-crystal polymorphic transformation under external stimuli. This work not only breaks the limitations of the research of organic polymorphism materials with NIR emission, but also provides a reliable strategy to reveal the influence of molecular packing on NIR emission.

Abstract:We have developed a new family of luminescent materials featuring through-space charge transfer from electron donors to acceptors that are electronically separated by triptycene. Most of these molecules are highly fluorescent, and modulation of their emissions was achieved by tuning the electron-accepting strength in a range from the weak triptycene acceptor over triarylborane (BMes) to strongly accepting naphthalimide (Npa) moieties. Pz-Pz shows an aggregation-induced emission in aggregates and in the solid state coupled with a highly red-shifted broad emission (ca. 160 nm) of the excimer, indicating that phenothiazine (Pz) also plays a vital role in the emission responses as an electron donor. This work may help develop new approaches to photophysical mechanism based on the rigid, homoconjugated, and structurally unusual 3D triptycene scaffold.

Abstract:A series of symmetrical cross-conjugated luminophores with different substituents at the 2,3-positions of a quinoxaline unit have been designed and synthesized. Their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), piezofluorochromic (PFC), and sensing properties have been systematically investigated. It can be found that four luminophores with the same conjugation backbone exhibit different ICT interactions between the electron-withdrawing quinoxaline unit and electron-donating triphenylamine units. Lippert-Mataga analysis reveals that luminophore 1 without substituents displays the largest dipole moment difference between ground and excited states. Moreover, the target luminophores present reversible PFC properties due to the phase transitions between crystalline and amorphous states. The most remarkable piezofluorochromism is achieved for luminophore 4 with pyridyl substituents. A bathochromic shift of 40 nm can be observed upon grinding the pristine sample. Furthermore, the target luminophores demonstrate selective and sensitive sensing properties to Fe3+ ions. In addition, luminophore 4 can also act as a colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for Ag+ ions.

Abstract:Organic fluorophores with tunable π-conjugated paths have attracted considerable attention owing to their diverse properties and promising applications. Herein, we present a tailored butterfly-like molecule, 2,2'-(2,5-bis (2,2-diphenylvinyl)-1,4-phenylene)dinaphthalene (BDVPN), which exhibits diverse photophysical features in its two polymorphs. The BP phase crystal, with its "aligned wings" conformation, possesses emissive characteristics that are nearly identical to those in dilute solutions. In contrast, the BN phase crystal, which adopts an "orthogonal wings" conformation, exhibits an unusual hypsochromic-shifted emission compared to its dilute solution counterparts. This intriguing hypsochromic-shifted emission originates from the reduction in the effective conjugated length of the molecular skeleton. Notably, BN phase crystals also exhibit exceptional optical performance, featuring high-efficiency emission (76.6 %), low-loss optical waveguides (0.571 dB mm-1), deep-blue amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM: 6.4 nm), and a unique 200 nm bathochromic shift of piezochromic luminescence.
Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Abstract:Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Abstract:Mechanoresponsive luminescent (MRL) materials have become a high-profile research system in the fields of force sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and optical information storage because of their obvious variety on luminescence intensity or luminescence color under mechanical force. In this work, nitro-triphenylamine (TPA-NO2) crystal was selected to conduct in situ high pressure experiments based on diamond anvil cell combined with theory calculation, and the piezochromism of TPA-NO2 crystal was discussed in detail. During the compression process, the TPA-NO2 crystal showed the piezochromic behavior and a redshift of the emission peak. The mechanical response behavior of TPA-NO2 provides insight into the study of multicolor properties from a structural perspective, offering a clean means of using pressure to modulate different colors and contributing to the exploration of high-potency MRL materials.

Abstract:Although some bright, organic mechanoluminescence (ML) luminogens with aggregation‐induced emission properties and twisted molecular structures are recently reported, those with planar structures and bright ML and their related effective design strategies are not yet explored, partially due to aggregation‐caused quenching in luminogens with planar structures. Herein, using the unique solid‐state packing style of pyrene, bright dual monomer‐excimer‐ML and excimer‐ML from two pyrene derivatives (Py‐Bpin and Py‐Br) with a simple, planar molecular structure are reported for the first time, and two analogs of pyrene and Py‐H are used for comparison. These four luminogens display similar optical properties in dilute solution but different luminescent properties in the solid state, mainly due to their different molecular packing. Interestingly, pyrene is mechanochromism (MC)‐ and ML‐inactive, while Py‐H is MC‐active, Py‐Bpin is MC‐ and ML‐active, and Py‐Br is ML‐active. The relationship between molecular packing and ML/MC properties is confirmed by analyzing single‐crystal structures and related experimental results, providing important information to further understand the mysterious ML process and opening a new way to design efficient luminogens with both MC and ML. A new class of mechanically responsive organic luminescent materials with planar structures is designed and synthesized. The synergistic interplay between the overlap and intermolecular interactions results in significantly different luminescent properties in the studied four compounds (pyrene and three pyrene derivatives). Interestingly, bright dual monomer‐excimer‐mechanoluminescence (ML) and excimer‐ML are first observed with Py‐Bpin and Py‐Br, respectively.
