Abstract:The synergistic effects derived from optimizing the chemical and structural features of electrocatalysts permit them to attain remarkable activity and stability. Herein, 1D/2D cobalt‐based nanohybrid (CoNH) electrodes are developed; the structural design consists of Co3O4 electrospun nanoribbons (NRs) deposited onto a carbon fiber paper substrate where Co3O4 nanosheets are subsequently grown via an electrodeposition step and UV/ozone treatment. The content of noncovalently functionalized carbon nanotubes within the Co3O4 NRs is first tuned to enhance their charge transfer properties and mechanical stability. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes is further improved by a phosphorus modification of the 1D NRs, resulting in the formation of NaCoPO4. The optimized 1D/2D CoNH electrode, i.e., ED‐0.09 wt% fCNTs/P‐CoNHs, displays a similar performance to that of platinum in 0.25 m Na2S/0.35 m Na2SO3 (Tafel slope ≈102 mV dec−1 for the former and ≈96 mV dec−1 for the latter) and outstanding stability for up to 48 h. The versatility and high activity of this electrode is also demonstrated according to tests in a conventional water splitting system (cell voltage 1.55V, to produce 10 mA cm−2) and a solar‐driven electrolyzer (1 m KOH).

Abstract:In this Letter, we describe the development of a CoSe2 nanowires array on carbon cloth (CoSe2 NW/CC) through a facile two-step hydrothermal preparative strategy. As a novel 3D nanoarray electrode for electrochemical hydrogen evolution, CoSe2 NW/CC exhibits excellent catalytic activity and durability in acidic media. It needs overpotentials of 130 and 164 mV to approach 10 and 100 mA cm(-2), respectively, and its activity is maintained for at least 48 h. This work would open up new avenues for the rational design of a variety of arrayed transition-metal chalcogenide cathodes for technological application toward large-scale hydrogen generation from water.

Abstract:Development of a non-noble-metal hydrogen-producing catalyst is essential to the development of solar water-splitting devices. Improving both the activity and the stability of the catalyst remains a key challenge. In this Communication, we describe a two-step reaction for preparing three-dimensional electrodes composed of CoSe2 nanoparticles grown on carbon fiber paper. The electrode exhibits excellent catalytic activity for a hydrogen evolution reaction in an acidic electrolyte (100 mA/cm(2) at an overpotential of similar to 180 mV). Stability tests though long-term potential cycles and extended electrolysis confirm the exceptional durability of the catalyst. This development offers an attractive catalyst material for large-scale water-splitting technology.

Abstract:Transition metal diselenides have been considered as one of the most promising earth-abundant electrocatalysts as alternatives to noble metal for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, hierarchically three-dimensional nickel cobalt diselenides (Ni1/3Co2/3Se2) with networked nanowires and nanosheets characteristics have been successfully synthesized. Such morphological features may not only provide large surface area allowing for exposure of more active sites, but also benefit deep electrolyte penetration for electrons and electrolyte ions. The resulting binder-free flexible electrodes with large production yield exhibit superior electrochemical HER activity and excellent durability after potential sweep tests for 1000 cycles. Besides their catalytic activity remain stable for electrolysis over 8h at mixed overpotential. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance makes the present nickel cobalt diselenide as a promising earth-abundant electrocatalyst for HER application.

Abstract:Novel cobalt disulfide on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CoS2/MWCNTs) was synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide. The physical properties of as-prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Physical characterizations revealed that cattierite CoS2 nanospheres dispersed on the surface of MWCNTs uniformly. In addition, electrochemical performances of as-prepared materials for hydrogen evolution reaction were investigated by polarization curves, Tafel plots, and electrochemical impedance spectrum in 0.50 M H2SO4 electrolyte. It was demonstrated that MWCNT-based electrode exhibited almost no current response while CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite-based electrode exhibited better electrochemical performances than pure CoS2-based electrode, including lower potential of − 257 mV for 10 mA cm−2 and smaller Tafel slope of 83 mV dec−1. Furthermore, CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite retained its high activity even after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry scans, demonstrating superior stability under acidic condition. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite-based electrode was ascribed to more exposed sulfur edges of CoS2, larger accessible surface area, and higher conductivity derived from MWCNTs. The results suggested that CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite had a potential application to hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:A key process in electrochemical energy technology is hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its electrochemical properties mainly depend on the catalytic activity of the material itself. Therefore, it is important to find efficient electrocatalysts to realize clean hydrogen production. As a typical kind of catalytic materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMCs) play important roles in the field of energy catalysis. As a representative of TMCs, cobalt disulfide (CoS2), recently has raised much research interest owing to its abundant reserves, environmental friendliness, and excellent electrochemical stability. Meanwhile, given the fact that doping is one of the effective methods to improve the electrochemical catalytic property, various means of doping have been researched. Here, we report for the first time that porous-like Se–CoS2-x (or Se:CoS2-x) nanorod can be facilely synthesized via a controllable two-step strategy. It is demonstrated that doping Se can greatly improve the catalytic performance of CoS2 electrode. The electrode can obtain a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at overpotential of only ∼260 mV. And the current changes with the applied bias voltage in an obvious stepped pattern, in the chronopotential (CP) curve of Se–CoS2-x, indicating its outstanding mass transfer property and mechanical stability.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Exploring active, stable, earth-abundant, low-cost, and high-efficiency electrocatalysts is highly desired for large-scale industrial applications toward the low-carbon economy. In this study, we apply a versatile selenizing technology to synthesize Se-enriched Co1-xFexSe2 catalysts on nickel foams for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and disclose the relationship between the electronic structures of Co1-xFexSe2 (via regulating the atom ratio of Co/Fe) and their OER performance. Owing to the fact that the electron configuration of the Co1-xFexSe2 compounds can be tuned by the incorporated Fe species (electron transfer and lattice distortion), the catalytic activity can be adjusted according to the Co/Fe ratios in the catalyst. Moreover, the morphology of Co1-xFexSe2 is also verified to strongly depend on the Co/Fe ratios, and the thinner Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets are obtained upon selenization treatment, in which it allows more active sites to be exposed to the electrolyte, in turn promoting the OER performance. The Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets not only exhibit superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1 but also possess ultrahigh durability with a dinky degeneration of 4.4% even after 72 h fierce water oxidation test in alkaline solution, which outperforms the commercial RuO2 catalyst. As expected, the Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets have shown great prospects for practical applications toward water oxidation.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is considered to be a green and flexible strategy for the mass production of hydrogen fuel, while the high cost and insufficent activity of current cathode catalysts severely suffocate the widespread thriving of hydrogen economy. Herein, we present a bottom‐up assembly strategy to the controllable construction of 2D/2D heterojunctions built from cobalt‐iron selenide nanolamellas and Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. This unique architectural design gives the resulting CoyFe1‐ySe2/Ti3C2Tx catalysts a series of interesting structural advantages, such as 2D/2D heterostructure, large active surface areas, modulated electronic structure, uniform CoyFe1‐ySe2 dispersion, and good electron conductivity, thereby leading to strong synergistic coupling effects. As a consequence, the optimized Co0.7Fe0.3Se2/Ti3C2Tx electrocatalyst with an appropriate Co/Fe ratio possesses unusual hydrogen evolution properties in terms of a low overpotential of 69 mV at 10 mA cm‐2, a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec‐1 and reliable long‐term durability, which are more competitive than those of bare Ti3C2Tx, FeSe2 and CoSe catalysts.

Abstract:AbstractFlexible three‐dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures have received tremendous interest recently because of their potential applications in wearable electronics, roll‐up displays, and other devices. The design and fabrication of a flexible and robust electrode based on cobalt sulfide/reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotube (CoS2/RGO‐CNT) nanocomposites are reported. An efficient hydrothermal process combined with vacuum filtration was used to synthesize such composite architecture, which was then embedded in a porous CNT network. This conductive and robust film is evaluated as electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The synergistic effect of CoS2, graphene, and CNTs leads to unique CoS2/RGO‐CNT nanoarchitectures, the HER activity of which is among the highest for non‐noble metal electrocatalysts, showing 10 mA cm−2 current density at about 142 mV overpotentials and a high electrochemical stability.

Abstract:The CoSe2/Co3S4 heteronanostructures are formed by varying the molar ratio of Na2S and Na2Se. DFT calculations indicate that CoSe2/Co3S4 heterojunction has suitable H binding energy, promoting H* conversion and H2 desorption compared to cobalt chalcogenide. The electrocatalyst based on CoSe2/Co3S4@Co3O4 exhibits an overpotential as low as 165 mV for 10 mA cm‐2 in 1 m KOH electrolyte. The development of high‐efficiency non‐precious metal electrocatalysts for alkaline electrolyte hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is of great significance in energy conversion to overcome the limited supply of fossil fuels and carbon emission. Here, a highly active electrocatalyst is presented for hydrogen production, consisting of 2D CoSe2/Co3S4 heterostructured nanosheets along Co3O4 nanofibers. The different reaction rate between the ion exchange reaction and redox reaction leads to the heterogeneous volume swelling, promoting the growth of 2D structure. The 2D/1D heteronanostructures enable the improved the electrochemical active area, the number of active sites, and more favorable H binding energy compared to individual cobalt chalcogenides. The roles of the different composition of the heterojunction are investigated, and the electrocatalysts based on the CoSe2/Co3S4@Co3O4 exhibited an overpotential as low as 165 mV for 10 mA cm−2 and 393 mV for 200 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH electrolyte. The as‐prepared electrocatalysts remained active after 55 h operation without any significant decrease, indicating the excellent long‐term operation stability of the electrode. The Faradaic efficiency of hydrogen production is close to 100% at different voltages. This work provides a new design strategy toward Co‐based catalysts for efficient alkaline HER.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides are a fascinating class of substitute for traditional noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the monometallic selenides still have the disadvantages of low electroactive sites and electrical conductivity. To address such drawbacks, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructures composed of bimetallic compounds have aroused great attention. In this study, cactus-like bimetallic nickel–cobalt nanosheets with a 3D nanostructure are successfully prepared on the surface of conductive substrate by a one-step hydrothermal reaction. Then a high-efficiency bimetallic catalyst ((Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP) is obtained by a facile chemical vapor deposition. Benefiting from bimetallic components and the unique 3D structure, the cactus-like (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP only requires a low overpotential of 154 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The Tafel slope of (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP (67 mV dec -1 ) further shows that (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP has faster HER kinetics. Besides, the long-term stability test demonstrates the excellent durability of (Ni,Co)Se 2 /CFP in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . This research offers a useful technique and guide for improving the structure of bimetallic selenides based on transition metals to design high-efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of lightweight, flexible, electrochemically active materials with high efficiency is important for energy storage and conversion. In this study, we report the fabrication of a freestanding, 3-dimensional graphene/cobalt sulfide nanoflake (3DG/CoSx) composite for supercapacitors and hydrogen evolution catalysts. The graphene framework formed by chemical vapour deposition provides superlight, highly conductive electron transport pathways, as well as abundant pores for electrolyte penetration. The densely patterned cobalt sulfide nanoflake arrays grown by electrodeposition offer a large surface area for electrochemical reactions, high theoretical capacitance and efficient hydrogen evolution catalytic activity. As a proof-of-concept, supercapacitors made of the 3DG/CoSx composites deliver a high specific capacitance of 443 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), with excellent capacity retention of 86% after 5000 cycles and mechanical flexibility. In addition, the 3DS/CoSx composites show attractive features as hydrogen evolution catalysts, with a low overpotential of 0.11 V and a Tafel slope of 93 mV dec(-1).

Abstract:Cobalt diselenide (CoSe2) is considered a promising catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while the limited active number, agglomeration, and quick deactivation by acid etching hinder its broad adoption. Herein, we report carbon layer-covered CoSe2 nanowire arrays grown on carbon cloth (C@CoSe2/CC). The structure of the nanowire array demonstrates synergistic effects in promoting the infiltration of electrolytes, accelerating the diffusion of H2 bubbles, and preventing CoSe2 from being etched by the electrolyte. As a result, the overpotential and Tafel slope (193 mV, 54.3 mV dec−1) obtained and sustained 24 hours with a negligible overpotential deterioration. This work provides insights into optimizing the intrinsic activity of active sites.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and earth-abundant electrocatalysts is of great importance for electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. This study demonstrates a novel ternary electrocatalyst of porous cobalt phosphoselenide nanosheets prepared by a combined hydrogenation and phosphation strategy. Benefiting from the enhanced electric conductivity and large surface area, the ternary nanosheets supported on electrochemically exfoliated graphene electrodes exhibit excellent catalytic activity and durability toward hydrogen evolution in alkali, achieving current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of 150 and 180 mV, respectively, outperforming those reported for transition metal dichalcogenides and first-row transition metal pyrites catalysts. Theoretical calculations reveal that the synergistic effects of Se vacancies and subsequent P displacements of Se atoms around the vacancies in the resulting cobalt phosphoselenide favorably change the electronic structure of cobalt selenide, assuring a rapid charge transfer and optimal energy barrier of hydrogen desorption, and thus promoting the proton kinetics. The overall-water-splitting with 10 mA cm(-2) at a low voltage of 1.64 V is achieved using the ternary electrode as both the anode and cathode, and the performance surpasses that of the Ir/C-Pt/C couple for sufficiently high overpotentials. Moreover, the integration of ternary nanosheets with macroporous silicon enables highly efficient solar-driven photoelectrochemical hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in basicmedia is critical to renewable energy conversion technologies. Here, we report a ternary hybrid that is constructed by in situ growth of cobalt selenide (Co0.85Se) nanosheets vertically oriented on electrochemically exfoliated graphene foil, with subsequent deposition of NiFe layered-double-hydroxide by a hydrothermal treatment. The resulting 3D hierarchical hybrid, possessing a high surface area of 156 m(2) g(-1) and strong coupling effect, exhibits excellent catalytic activity for OER, which only requires overpotentials of 1.50 and 1.51 V to attain current densities of 150 and 250 mA cm(-2), respectively. These overpotentials are much lower than those reported for other non-noble-metal materials and Ir/C catalysts. The hybrid also efficiently catalyzes HER in base with a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of -0.26 V. Most importantly, we achieve a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) at 1.71 V by using the 3D hybrid as both a cathode and an anode for overall water splitting, which is well comparable to the integrated performance of Pt/C and Ir/C catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen is increasingly needed as a clean energy source with high energy density. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via electrocatalysis is a viable way to produce clean hydrogen. The key to achieving active HER is to select highly-active electrocatalysts. Although Pt-based noble metal catalysts have excellent performance, they are expensive and earth-abundant. Compared to noble metals, cobalt chalcogenide has been used for efficient HER. Here, we first demonstrated a porous material based on C-dots/cobalt chalcogenide nanofibers as an effective electrocatalyst for HER. Co 3 O 4 /10 wt% C-dots nanofibers-based electrode reached an overpotential of 383 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 with Tafel slope of 93.4 mV·dec −1 in 1 M KOH, which is much better than bare Co 3 O 4 (758 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , Tafel slope is 111.3 mV·dec −1 ). In addition to the excellent HER performance, the Co 3 O 4 /C-dots nanofibers performed very well in terms of stability after a 10-hour operation, and the overpotential was even reduced by 6.7%. With the further sulphuration, the Co 3 S 4 /C-dots nanofibers exhibited an overpotential of 280.2 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 . Abstract:Developing cost-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for water splitting has long been a big challenge. Here, a hybrid of Fe doped CoSe2 incorporated in nitrogen doped carbon (Fe-CoSe2@NC) was synthesized by selenization of Fe3+-etched metal organic frameworks (ZIF-67). As a result of the electronic structure engineering and morphology design, the Fe-CoSe2@NC hybrid showed an enhanced HER performance with a low overpotential of -143 mV for 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of similar to 40 mV dec(-1). It also exhibited good stability and a high Faradiac efficiency. The enhanced HER activity might be owing to the increased active surface area due to Fe3+ ions etching. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the improved HER activity of Fe-CoSe2 could be attributed to the favorable adsorption-desorption behavior and accelerated HER kinetics, which was induced by the doping of iron atoms into CoSe2. This work comes up with a valuable strategy in designing and improving advanced electrocatalysts.
Nanoporous Cobalt-Selenide as High-Performance Bifunctional Electrocatalyst towards Oxygen Evolution and Hydrazine Oxidation

Abstract:Water splitting is inhibited by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which can lead to a high overpotential for overall water electrolysis. Nevertheless, it is an effective strategy to explore high efficient OER electrocatalyst and replace OER with hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) of low theoretical potential. Herein, we report a bifunctional CoSe-3 catalyst with nanoporous structure via one-step electrodeposition. In comparison with CoSe-2 and CoSe-4, CoSe-3 catalyst shows outstanding catalytic performance and stability towards OER with a low overpotenial of 254 mV vs RHE to achieve 10 mA cm−2 and a high durability (16 h at 100 mA cm−2). CoSe-3 further shows excellent performance towards HzOR with an enomous current density of 278 mA cm−2 at 0.4 V vs RHE and a high stability (24 h at 200 mA cm−2). Specially, the mechanism reason of the remarkably enhanced catalytic performance of bifunctional CoSe-3 electrocatalyst was revealed. This can be associated with its uniformly distributed nanoporous structure, high conductivity induced by the excess of Se content, large ECSA and its superaerophobic surface caused by nanoporous structure of CoSe-3.

Abstract:Cobalt diselenide (CoSe2) has been demonstrated to be an efficient and economic electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) both experimentally and theoretically. However, the catalytic performance of up-to-now reported CoSe2-based OER catalysts is still far below commercial expectation. Herein, we report a hybrid catalyst consisting of CoSe2 nanosheets grafted on defective graphene (DG). This catalyst exhibits a largely enhanced OER activity and robust stability in alkaline solution (overpotential at 10 mA cm-2: 270 mV; Tafel plots: 64 mV dec-1). Both experimental evidence and density functional theory calculations reveal that the outstanding OER performance of this hybrid catalyst can be attributed to the synergetic effect of exposed cobalt atoms and carbon defects (electron transfer from CoSe2 layer to defect sites at DG). Our results suggest a promising way for the development of highly efficient and low-cost OER catalysts based on transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for a variety of renewable energy applications. Herein, strongly coupled hybrid composites composed of cobalt diselenide (CoSe2) nanoparticles embedded within graphitic carbon polyhedra (GCP) as high-performance ORR catalyst have been rationally designed and synthesized. The catalyst is fabricated by a convenient method, which involves the simultaneous pyrolysis and selenization of preformed Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67). Benefiting from the unique structural features, the resulting CoSe2/GCP hybrid catalyst shows high stability and excellent electrocatalytic activity towards ORR (the onset and half-wave potentials are 0.935 and 0.806 V vs. RHE, respectively), which is superior to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.912 and 0.781 V vs. RHE, respectively).
