Abstract:Medium-sized gold nanoparticles with multiple functions can be easily prepared using a carboxylate-bearing pillar[5]arene or pillar[6]arene through a reversed Turkevich method. Mother nature is an innovative creator that utilizes soft organic compounds and hard inorganic substrates to generate organic-inorganic hybrids including carapaces, shells, and bones. Learning from nature, humans fabricated organic-inorganic composites a thousand years ago, such as maya blue, an ancient dye manufactured by organic pigments and inorganic clay. Through continuously challenging ourselves, now, we are able to construct various complicated organic-inorganic hybrids, typically for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).1Sanchez C. Belleville P. Popall M. In this issue of Matter, Ying-Wei Yang and coworkers show that the medium-sized AuNPs with multiple functions can be prepared in situ through a reversed Turkevich method and the reduction of HAuCl4 by carboxyl groups on water-soluble water soluble pillar[5,6]arenes (Figure 1).4Wang X. To avoid fast nucleation process, the carboxylate moiety has been used as a mild reducing agent to prepare AuNPs by its hydroxyl group, which is similar to the classic citrate-involved method.6Al-Johani H. Therefore, water-soluble pillararenes with multiple carboxyl groups have been paid attention in the preparation of AuNPs. Res. 2012; 45: 1294-1308Crossref PubMed Scopus (1131) Google Scholar Benefitting from their simple preparation, easy functionalization, multiple functional groups, and host‒guest properties, a series of water-soluble pillararenes has been explored to stabilize metal nanoparticles, especially per-carboxyl-bearing water-soluble pillar[5]arene (CP5) and pillar[6]arene (CP6) for AuNPs.8Yao Y. Unlike previous reports, Yang and co-workers directly used CP5 or CP6 as a reducing agent in a reversed Turkevich method (adding HAuCl4 to the boiling aqueous solution of CP5 or CP6), and the generated AuNPs were in situ stabilized by excess CP6. Compared with the classic Turkevich method, the pH of the reaction mixture is in favor of both the particle formation process and effective stabilization. Therefore, medium-sized AuNPs (∼15.4 nm) with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 520.5 nm and a nanoporous CP5 shell were obtained. The SPR peak is a crucial criterion to determine the further application of AuNPs due to its correspondence with the aggregated or dispersed state, and yet the SPR peak of AuNPs with relatively smaller size (<5 nm) hardly changed with trace amounts of analyte.9Ghosh S.K. Rev. 2007; 107: 4797-4862Crossref PubMed Scopus (2208) Google Scholar Notably, in Yang’s work, the medium-sized AuNPs were ideal candidates for guest detection because the nanoporous pillararene shell was able to bind guest molecules, and the SPR peak of such AuNPs exhibited obvious changes upon aggregated or dispersed states. Consequently, CP6-AuNPs prepared from the reversed Turkevich approach by CP6 and HAuCl4 were further applied in detecting methyl viologen (MV). In presence of MV, the negative surface charge of CP6-AuNPs was compensated by host–guest association between CP6 and MV, leading to the aggregation of CP6-AuNPs along with the shift of the SPR peak. By calculating the ratio of the integrated intensities of the peaks belonging to the aggregated state or dispersed state, a sensitive detection of MV with a detection limit of 0.011 ppm was achieved, which was much higher than previous reports. Apart from a trace amount of MV, CP6-AuNPs were also able to respond to MV at an extended concentration, providing great prospects in chemical detection applications. In addition to optical property of AuNPs, catalytic ability is also a promising function. CP6-AuNPs reported by Yang and coworkers showed excellent performance in catalytic reduction of nitrophenol to aminophenol under existence of NaBH4. Moreover, the apparent reaction rate constants (kapp) to o-/m-/p-nitrophenol were different, as kapp to m-nitrophenol was higher than it to o- or p-isomer, which were ascribed to different electrophilicities of three isomers. Besides, the recyclability of CP6-AuNPs was also tested, and negligible weakening of catalytic ability was shown after five catalytic cycles. Looking forward, as suggested by Yang et al., the combination of the synthetic macrocycle and AuNPs provides a new perspective and a valid strategy to fabricate not only noble metal nanoparticles, but also multi-functional organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials, and these nanomaterials are going to be promising candidates for many scientific applications. Clearly, there will be more impressive works on organic-inorganic hybrid materials, which are destined to promote both fundamental research and industry.
