Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in the mixing behaviour of simple random walks on inhomogeneous directed graphs. We focus our study on the Chung-Lu digraph, which is an inhomogeneous network that generalizes the Erdős-Rényi digraph. In particular, under the Chung-Lu model, edges are included in the graph independently and according to given Bernoulli laws, so that the average degrees are fixed. To guarantee the a.s. existence of a unique reversible measure, which is implied by the strong connectivity of the graph, we assume that the average degree grows logarithmically in the size $n$ of the graph. In this weakly dense regime, we prove that the total variation distance to equilibrium displays a cutoff behaviour at the entropic time of order $\log(n)/\log\log(n)$. Moreover, we prove that on a precise window, the cutoff profile converges to the Gaussian tail function. This is qualitatively similar to what was proved in [6,7,8] for the directed configuration model, where degrees are deterministically fixed. In terms of statistical ensembles, our analysis provides an extension of these cutoff results from a hard to a soft-constrained model.

Abstract:Let C-1 be the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n, p). The mixing time of random walk on C-1 in the strictly supercritical regime, p = c/n with fixed c > 1, was shown to have order log(2) n by Fountoulakis and Reed, and independently by Benjamini, Kozma and Wormald. In the critical window, p = (1 + epsilon)/n where lambda = epsilon(3)n is bounded, Nachmias and Peres proved that the mixing time on C-1 is of order n. However, it was unclear how to interpolate between these results, and estimate the mixing time as the giant component emerges from the critical window. Indeed, even the asymptotics of the diameter of C-1 in this regime were only recently obtained by Riordan and Wormald, as well as the present authors and Kim.In this paper, we show that for p = (1 + epsilon)/n with lambda = epsilon(3)n -> infinity and lambda = 0(n), the mixing time on C-1 is with high probability of order (n/lambda) log(2) lambda. In addition, we show that this is the order of the largest mixing time over all components, both in the slightly supercritical and in the slightly subcritical regime [i.e., p = (1 - epsilon)/n with lambda as above].

Wefocus on Glauber dynamics for the (classical) Ising model as well asrandom walks on random graphs.We first provide a complete picture for the evolution of the mixingtimes and spectral gaps for the mean-field Ising model. Inparticular, we pin down the scaling window, and prove a cutoffphenomenon at high temperatures, as well as confirm the power law atcriticality. We then move to the critical Ising model at Bethelattice (regular trees), where the criticality corresponds to thereconstruction threshold. We establish that the mixing time and thespectral gap are polynomial in the surface area, which is the heightof the tree in this special case. Afterwards, we show that themixing time of Glauber dynamics for the (ferromagnetic) Ising modelon an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph at any temperature has a lowerbound of $n \log n/4$, confirming a folklore theorem in the specialcase of Ising model.In the second part, we study the random walk on the largestcomponent of the near-supcritical Erd quot;os-R #x27;{e}nyi graph. Using acomplete characterization of the structure for thenear-supercritical random graph, as well as various techniques tobound the mixing times in terms of spectral profile, we obtain thecorrect order for the mixing time in this regime, which demonstratesa smooth interpolation between the critical and the supercriticalregime.

Abstract:The theory of rapid mixing random walks plays a fundamental role in the study of modern randomised algorithms. Usually, the mixing time is measured with respect to the worst initial position. It is well known that the presence of bottlenecks in a graph hampers mixing and, in particular, starting inside a small bottleneck significantly slows down the diffusion of the walk in the first steps of the process. The average mixing time is defined to be the mixing time starting at a uniformly random vertex and hence is not sensitive to the slow diffusion caused by these bottlenecks. In this paper we provide a general framework to show logarithmic average mixing time for random walks on graphs with small bottlenecks. The framework is especially effective on certain families of random graphs with heterogeneous properties. We demonstrate its applicability on two random models for which the mixing time was known to be of order $(\log n)^2$, speeding up the mixing to order $\log n$. First, in the context of smoothed analysis on connected graphs, we show logarithmic average mixing time for randomly perturbed graphs of bounded degeneracy. A particular instance is the Newman-Watts small-world model. Second, we show logarithmic average mixing time for supercritically percolated expander graphs. When the host graph is complete, this application gives an alternative proof that the average mixing time of the giant component in the supercritical Erdős-Rényi graph is logarithmic.

Abstract:Mixing of finite time-homogeneous Markov chains is well understood nowadays, with a rich set of techniques to estimate their mixing time. In this paper, we study the mixing time of random walks in dynamic random environments. To that end, we propose a concept of mixing time for time-inhomogeneous Markov chains. We then develop techniques to estimate this mixing time by extending the evolving set method of Morris and Peres (2003). We apply these techniques to study a random walk on a dynamic Erdős-Rényi graph, proving that the mixing time is $O(\log(n))$ when the graph is well above the connectivity threshold. We also give an almost matching lower bound.

Abstract:Consider Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on a graph of n vertices. Hayes and Sinclair showed that the mixing time for this dynamics is at least n log n/f (Delta), where Delta is the maximum degree and f (Delta) = Theta(Delta log(2) Delta). Their result applies to more general spin systems, and in that generality, they showed that some dependence on. is necessary. In this paper, we focus on the ferromagnetic Ising model and prove that the mixing time of Glauber dynamics on any n-vertex graph is at least (1/4 + o(1))n log n.
Rapid mixing of global Markov chains via spectral independence: the unbounded degree case

Abstract:We consider spin systems on general $n$-vertex graphs of unbounded degree and explore the effects of spectral independence on the rate of convergence to equilibrium of global Markov chains. Spectral independence is a novel way of quantifying the decay of correlations in spin system models, which has significantly advanced the study of Markov chains for spin systems. We prove that whenever spectral independence holds, the popular Swendsen--Wang dynamics for the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on graphs of maximum degree $\Delta$, where $\Delta$ is allowed to grow with $n$, converges in $O((\Delta \log n)^c)$ steps where $c > 0$ is a constant independent of $\Delta$ and $n$. We also show a similar mixing time bound for the block dynamics of general spin systems, again assuming that spectral independence holds. Finally, for monotone spin systems such as the Ising model and the hardcore model on bipartite graphs, we show that spectral independence implies that the mixing time of the systematic scan dynamics is $O(\Delta^c \log n)$ for a constant $c>0$ independent of $\Delta$ and $n$. Systematic scan dynamics are widely popular but are notoriously difficult to analyze. Our result implies optimal $O(\log n)$ mixing time bounds for any systematic scan dynamics of the ferromagnetic Ising model on general graphs up to the tree uniqueness threshold. Our main technical contribution is an improved factorization of the entropy functional: this is the common starting point for all our proofs. Specifically, we establish the so-called $k$-partite factorization of entropy with a constant that depends polynomially on the maximum degree of the graph.

Abstract:We study the mixing time of a random walker who moves inside a dynamical random cluster model on the d -dimensional torus of side-length n . In this model, edges switch at rate between open and closed , following a Glauber dynamics for the random cluster model with parameters p , q . At the same time, the walker jumps at rate 1 as a simple random walk on the torus, but is only allowed to traverse open edges. We show that for small enough p the mixing time of the random walker is of order . In our proof we construct a non-Markovian coupling through a multi-scale analysis of the environment, which we believe could be more widely applicable.

Abstract:In the Fastest Mixing Markov Chain problem, we are given a graph and desire the discrete-time Markov chain with smallest mixing time subject to having equilibrium distribution uniform on V and non-zero transition probabilities only across edges of the graph. It is well-known that the mixing time of the lazy random walk on G is characterised by the edge conductance of G via Cheeger's inequality: . Analogously, we characterise the fastest mixing time via a Cheeger-type inequality but for a different geometric quantity, namely the vertex conductance of G : . This characterisation forbids fast mixing for graphs with small vertex conductance. To bypass this fundamental barrier, we consider Markov chains on G with equilibrium distribution which need not be uniform, but rather only -close to uniform in total variation. We show that it is always possible to construct such a chain with mixing time . Finally, we discuss analogous questions for continuous-time and time-inhomogeneous chains.

Rapid mixing of the down-up walk on matchings of a fixed size

Abstract:Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $m^*(G)$ denote the size of a maximum matching in $G$. We show that for any $\delta > 0$ and for any $1 \leq k \leq (1-\delta)m^*(G)$, the down-up walk on matchings of size $k$ in $G$ mixes in time polynomial in $n$. Previously, polynomial mixing was not known even for graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$, and our result makes progress on a conjecture of Jain, Perkins, Sah, and Sawhney [STOC, 2022] that the down-up walk mixes in optimal time $O_{\Delta,\delta}(n\log{n})$. In contrast with recent works analyzing mixing of down-up walks in various settings using the spectral independence framework, we bound the spectral gap by constructing and analyzing a suitable multi-commodity flow. In fact, we present constructions demonstrating the limitations of the spectral independence approach in our setting.

A note on graphs resistant to quantum uniform mixing

Abstract:Continuous-time quantum walks on graphs is a generalization of continuous-time Markov chains on discrete structures. Moore and Russell proved that the continuous-time quantum walk on the $n$-cube is instantaneous exactly uniform mixing but has no average mixing property. On complete (circulant) graphs $K_{n}$, the continuous-time quantum walk is neither instantaneous (except for $n=2,3,4$) nor average uniform mixing (except for $n=2$). We explore two natural {\em group-theoretic} generalizations of the $n$-cube as a $G$-circulant and as a bunkbed $G \rtimes \Int_{2}$, where $G$ is a finite group. Analyses of these classes suggest that the $n$-cube might be special in having instantaneous uniform mixing and that non-uniform average mixing is pervasive, i.e., no memoryless property for the average limiting distribution; an implication of these graphs having zero spectral gap. But on the bunkbeds, we note a memoryless property with respect to the two partitions. We also analyze average mixing on complete paths, where the spectral gaps are nonzero.

Exact thresholds for Ising-Gibbs samplers on general graphs

Abstract:We establish tight results for rapid mixing of Gibbs samplers for the Ferromagnetic Ising model on general graphs. We show that if \[(d-1)\tanh\beta<1,\] then there exists a constant C such that the discrete time mixing time of Gibbs samplers for the ferromagnetic Ising model on any graph of n vertices and maximal degree d, where all interactions are bounded by $\beta$, and arbitrary external fields are bounded by $Cn\log n$. Moreover, the spectral gap is uniformly bounded away from 0 for all such graphs, as well as for infinite graphs of maximal degree d. We further show that when $d\tanh\beta<1$, with high probability over the Erdos-Renyi random graph $G(n,d/n)$, it holds that the mixing time of Gibbs samplers is \[n^{1+\Theta({1}/{\log\log n})}.\] Both results are tight, as it is known that the mixing time for random regular and Erdos-Renyi random graphs is, with high probability, exponential in n when $(d-1)\tanh\beta>1$, and $d\tanh\beta>1$, respectively. To our knowledge our results give the first tight sufficient conditions for rapid mixing of spin systems on general graphs. Moreover, our results are the first rigorous results establishing exact thresholds for dynamics on random graphs in terms of spatial thresholds on trees.

Abstract:We study the behavior of random walk on dynamical percolation. In this model, the edges of a graph G are either open or closed and refresh their status at rate \mu\ while at the same time a random walker moves on G at rate 1 but only along edges which are open. On the d-dimensional torus with side length n, we prove that in the subcritical regime, the mixing times for both the full system and the random walker are n^2/\mu\ up to constants. We also obtain results concerning mean squared displacement and hitting times. Finally, we show that the usual recurrence transience dichotomy for the lattice Z^d holds for this model as well.

Abstract:For general spin systems, we prove that a contractive coupling for any local Markov chain implies optimal bounds on the mixing time and the modified log-Sobolev constant for a large class of Markov chains including the Glauber dynamics, arbitrary heat-bath block dynamics, and the Swendsen-Wang dynamics. This reveals a novel connection between probabilistic techniques for bounding the convergence to stationarity and analytic tools for analyzing the decay of relative entropy. As a corollary of our general results, we obtain $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time and $\Omega(1/n)$ modified log-Sobolev constant of the Glauber dynamics for sampling random $q$-colorings of an $n$-vertex graph with constant maximum degree $\Delta$ when $q > (11/6 - \epsilon_0)\Delta$ for some fixed $\epsilon_0>0$. We also obtain $O(\log{n})$ mixing time and $\Omega(1)$ modified log-Sobolev constant of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the ferromagnetic Ising model on an $n$-vertex graph of constant maximum degree when the parameters of the system lie in the tree uniqueness region. At the heart of our results are new techniques for establishing spectral independence of the spin system and block factorization of the relative entropy. On one hand we prove that a contractive coupling of a local Markov chain implies spectral independence of the Gibbs distribution. On the other hand we show that spectral independence implies factorization of entropy for arbitrary blocks, establishing optimal bounds on the modified log-Sobolev constant of the corresponding block dynamics.

Mixing of fast random walks on dynamic random permutations

Abstract:We analyse the mixing profile of a random walk on a dynamic random permutation, focusing on the regime where the walk evolves much faster than the permutation. Two types of dynamics generated by random transpositions are considered: one allows for coagulation of permutation cycles only, the other allows for both coagulation and fragmentation. We show that for both types, after scaling time by the length of the permutation and letting this length tend to infinity, the total variation distance between the current distribution and the uniform distribution converges to a limit process that drops down in a single jump. This jump is similar to a one-sided cut-off, occurs after a random time whose law we identify, and goes from the value 1 to a value that is a strictly decreasing and deterministic function of the time of the jump, related to the size of the largest component in Erdős-Rényi random graphs. After the jump, the total variation distance follows this function down to 0.

Abstract:We study the mixing time of the symmetric beta-binomial splitting process on finite weighted connected graphs $G=(V,E,\{r_e\}_{e\in E})$ with vertex set $V$, edge set $E$ and positive edge-weights $r_e>0$ for $e\in E$. This is an interacting particle system with a fixed number of particles that updates through vertex-pairwise interactions which redistribute particles. We show that the mixing time of this process can be upper-bounded in terms of the maximal expected meeting time of two independent random walks on $G$. Our techniques involve using a process similar to the chameleon process invented by Morris (2006) to bound the mixing time of the exclusion process.

Abstract:We prove an optimal $\Omega(n^{-1})$ lower bound on the spectral gap of Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. This spectral gap holds for any, including unbounded, maximum degree Δ. Consequently, we have the following mixing time bounds for the models satisfying the uniqueness condition with a slack $\delta\in(0,1)$: • $C(\delta)n^{2}\log n$ mixing time for the hardcore model with fugacity $\leq(1-\delta)\lambda_{c}(\Delta)=(1-\delta)\frac{(\Delta-1)^{\Delta-1}}{(\Delta-2)^{\Delta}}$; • $C(\delta)n^{2}$ mixing time for the Ising model with edge activity $\beta\in[\frac{\Delta-2+\delta}{\Delta-\delta},\frac{\Delta-\delta}{\Delta-2+\delta}]$; where the maximum degree Δ may depend on the number of vertices n, and C(δ) depends only on δ. Our proof is built upon the recently developed connections between the Glauber dynamics for spin systems and the high-dimensional expander walks. In particular, we prove a stronger notion of spectral independence, called the complete spectral independence, and use a novel Markov chain called the field dynamics to connect this stronger spectral independence to the rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for all degrees.
Random Walks on Dynamical Random Environments with Non-Uniform Mixing

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Abstract:We provide an estimate, sharp up to poly-logarithmic factors, of the asymptotically almost sure mixing time of the graph created by long-range percolation on the cycle of length N (Z/NZ). While it is known that the almost sure diameter drops from linear to poly-logarithmic as the exponent s decreases below 2, the almost sure mixing time drops from N^2 only to N^(s-1) (up to poly-logarithmic factors).

Abstract:Many finite-state reversible Markov chains can be naturally decomposed into "projection" and "restriction" chains. In this paper we provide bounds on the total variation mixing times of the original chain in terms of the mixing properties of these related chains. This paper is in the tradition of existing bounds on Poincare and log-Sobolev constants of Markov chains in terms of similar decompositions [JSTV04, MR02, MR06, MY09]. Our proofs are simple, relying largely on recent results relating hitting and mixing times of reversible Markov chains [PS13, Oli12]. We describe situations in which our results give substantially better bounds than those obtained by applying existing decomposition results and provide examples for illustration.
